Brackets are double elimination--everyone starts in the winners bracket. If you lose there, you get sent to the loser's bracket, where you have one more chance before you're eliminated for your next loss. The rounds of these brackets correspond to each other. At the end of each, there's a finals match. The loser of winners finals vs. the last remaining player in losers bracket is losers finals. The winner of winners finals and the winner of losers finals play in grand finals. The person coming from losers has to win two best 3 out of 5 sets in grand finals in order to take the tournament, whereas the person coming from winners only has to win one, because the bracket is still double elimination.
Probably. It's been in NJ every year. You should check SmashBoards for other tournaments near you. I think SKTAR is in NJ and it's an MLG qualifier. All the top players are going, even Armada.
Nope, there never were any real sticks for GC to begin with. That and sticks lack the double joysticks (some tricks need the C-stick to be done). So the controller is the most loved still!
Fun fact, you actually can't use a fight stick for Smash at all (unless it were specially built). Fight sticks (most of them, maybe there are some special cases) only offer digital input for direction. This would mean you can only dash for movement, not walk, and only do smash attacks unless you buffered a direction during a previous animation instead of being free to do a tilt attack at any time. You also would not be able to tilt your shield to prevent from getting shield poked, and moves like Fox's and Falco's UpB's would be limited to only 8 directions instead of 16 for the same reason. Hope you enjoyed the info!
He originally sucked at Smash which is why he gave himself a stupid name. This bites him in the ass now that he is one of the best players in the world.
Man if only the video had higher framerate. There are so many times that all I can do is read between the frames to figure out what's actually happening because these moves are just so fast.
lol the Melee community is so much better than the Brawl community. It seems like everyone is 10 years older maturity-level wise. Also, the commentators are pretty legit.
Well it's strange, certainly different in execution but similar in theory. I can execute the ledge cancel on Shiek pretty easily, but I can barely get the Fox/Falco one.
is that a short hop neutral Air (A button right) just short jump then an A button.. is that how he's killing so easily? or is he using C stick to do that?!?!
does well in practically every matchup except ICs from my knowledge, chain grab is OP, everything leads to f-air, great hitboxes to win most trades, and great defensive options.
Sheik gets a lot off of grabs. In particular, it is notorious for the d-throw --> f-air setup on a lot of the cast at higher percents. It also allows her to chain grab a lot of the cast (in NTSC) and start reaction tech chases against fast fallers. Her combo game works because the threat of a f-air or d-smash allows for some mind games on normally easy to escape combos. In addition to this, her tilts and needles are very good at controlling space and making the opponent play a certain way. It becomes hard to approach safely when playing against a good Sheik. Her kit is also quite good for edge-guarding. As for her negatives, Sheik has trouble with crouch cancelling (she doesn't really have an answer other than grab.) She also has trouble with ICs on paper because the fact that there are two of them makes grab inherently less safe. Other characters such as Puff, Peach and Spacies who have reliable ways to bait and punish grab also do well. Recently people have been saying the Marth matchup is more even than they used to, because Marth's amazing movement opens up more opportunities in the neutral than Sheik's. But despite these problems a good Sheik is very difficult to play against. I hope this helped, and I will answer questions you may have to the best of my ability.
0:05 R2-D2???
LMAO
XD
Omfg Moisés mi Sen laughing man go to you sir
Goldminor1127 The calm ass Yoshi's Story music really makes it even better
OMG XD
The hype at these events is just nuts. Love the cheers from the crowd.
I, for one, welcome our new avian overlord.

DESTRUCTION
Neil "is that what you wanted from apex 2014?"
N. IT'S THE SHINE.
PP's falco is poetry.
PP's beard is increasing same as his skills
He's like an upside down super saiyan.
He got super saiyan beard phase 3
Lol lmfao!
But remember SSJ4 is Westballz Lol
+Ricardo Salazar SSJ5?
11:52 Best thing about this GFs is imagining that D1's voice is falco here lmao
God damn that falco is intense
Can someone explain to me the difference between Grand Final, Winners Final, and Losers Final is? I'm a complete noob.
Brackets are double elimination--everyone starts in the winners bracket. If you lose there, you get sent to the loser's bracket, where you have one more chance before you're eliminated for your next loss.

Ok Thank You. I didn't know it was double elimination.
rumor is all his strats are in that beard of his
Commentator fart at 3:06
Thanks Spooky!
Mew2king's reaction at 11:53
pop off
OOOOOOOOOOOOH DOLPHIN SLASHHHH
What are you guys doing?! WELCOME THE NOOBS DON'T SCARE THEM AWAY
man, I wish I could have gone to this, its only 20 minutes away from my house! Will they have Apex again in NJ next year?
Probably. It's been in NJ every year. You should check SmashBoards for other tournaments near you. I think SKTAR is in NJ and it's an MLG qualifier. All the top players are going, even Armada.
the stream was crazy hype for this battle
Interesting, are sticks not popular for Smash Bros?
Heck of a match, though the followups and consistency made it obvious who was on stronger ground.
Nope, there never were any real sticks for GC to begin with. That and sticks lack the double joysticks (some tricks need the C-stick to be done). So the controller is the most loved still!
Smash Bros was made with the Nintendo analog stick in mind. There isn't any reason at all for players to use traditional fighting sticks.
Fun fact, you actually can't use a fight stick for Smash at all (unless it were specially built). BlubbaPinecone Actually, fox and falco's up-b have over 300 unique angles.
0:04 R2D2 is that you?
who's commentating with d1? He's the best smash commentator I've ever heard !
Adon Banchamek prog
That was beautiful, Hope another great matchup of this caliber can happen this year! (Stupid delays :()
PP's dash->wavedash dashdance mixups are insane... I wish I could move like this in Melee
You can!
The most interesting thing about this video is the second player's name.
He originally sucked at Smash which is why he gave himself a stupid name. This bites him in the ass now that he is one of the best players in the world.
***** ummm...yeah PP's been around since 2007. Used to main mario...has a really good roy, fox, and marth as you probably saw in WFs.
Man if only the video had higher framerate.
There are so many times that all I can do is read between the frames to figure out what's actually happening because these moves are just so fast.
melee is still the best smash bros game.
Of course. Even Smash 4 fans are beginning to accept this.
"Your all free now" best part XD
17:55
It was an absolute privilege to have been a witness to something this spectacular in person! I had one of the best weekends ever at Apex 2014!
Timeless gameplay. Absolute beauty.
That combo at 11:40 was so hype! Could not stand watching it lol.
Damn these are so intense
lol the Melee community is so much better than the Brawl community. It seems like everyone is 10 years older maturity-level wise.
Also, the commentators are pretty legit.
This is one of the best melee sets ever
the play, the hype, yeah man
Damn, PPMD showed M2K how its done this year, but I know M2K wasn't at his best
How so?
Wtf was that video at the end??
It's what TeamSp00ky does at the end of tournaments they stream. They show that video on stream to tell the chat/viewers online that they are free.
Ppmd and dr . Pp same person?
kaz9781 Yes. He dediced to change name after being sponsor by Evil Geniuses. It is much more professionnal.
top 10 best meele playes ever
Why did m2k switch back to marth when he just did well with sheik.
Damn, these matches had me on my toes!
I'm sad it ended just 3-1 but the performance showcased in these matches... Fucking godlike.
Top player titles well deserved.
are they playin on wii or gamecube?
M2K reaction so sad :( But i believe he will win this year.
I felt so sad watching him ;_;
naww pp won again.
When was the last time M2K won a national?
lol 9th2k
I think so too. I think he should stop playing Sm4sh...he's good in it but I think that he is putting more priority on it and less priority on Melee.
That's some deep analytic journalism behind the mic.
PP played better than he ever has in this tournament. Congrats, a really dominating performances in every game. Also, Sad2King :(
Woah, did you see m2k's controller? I think he mixed the shells of a silver and blue controller!?
It's a custom controller
PPMD just put on a flippin' clinic on how to kill M2K's Marth
That was impressive
It seems every time mew2King faces a Falco the spectator is in for a match for the history. Haven't seen smash this intense in a while.
I miss these gold good times...!
Does izaw91 still play?
i thought those were two white guys saw the ending laughed my ass off
I didn't even know Sheik could ledge cancel her upB.
same way fox and falco can ledge cancel their upBs
It's not that simple. Shieks UpB barely moves her when she does it at an angle near the ground.
Well it's strange, certainly different in execution but similar in theory. I can execute the ledge cancel on Shiek pretty easily, but I can barely get the Fox/Falco one.
That was epic
can someone finally tell me what PPMD stands for?
pee pee medical doctor
God do I miss prog commentary.
10:30 looking like PC Chris vs Ken.
Every year is the year of Falco, he's Falco.
I really wanted the guy on the right to say, with that totally serious look, "Dr. PP pee pees on the competition once again."
Where is armada??
m2k needs to learn falco and play falco dittos
Wanna know what they are doing in the fight but it's too fast? Set vid speed to ".5" Your welcome.
Yeah, I always play as Falco in ssbm.
miss these days
ikr
But I gotta say, both players put up a good fight even if M2K was kind of lagging in the beginning.
Lmfao that ending.... you re all free now..!
11:41 Ohhhhhh yeahh
This was an amazing tournament.
I still thibk mango vs leffen was to epic he 4 0 him was crazy
I love these two commentators, one of them didn't shy away from dr. pp's name at all, it got funnier and funnier lol.
I feel like ppmd has a really strong neutral compared to m2k but if m2k studies him he could win against ppmd . He has done in before
Mew2king playing like this is Smash64!! But foreal that "The Who" reference XD
Idk why he keeps doing powershield to ftilt! Definitely not M2K's best.
still watching smash lol
Yeah, too many ftlits. I would guess its a mistake, but I don't know what he would be trying instead...
PP got in his head. Mind games and pressure can change your play style quick. Trust me
6:14 fav kill
Dr PP is really impressive, especially his speed and technique. It's just too bad that M2K seemed far away from his full potential
Press 1 if you feel bad for Dr PP at 11: 45
You're all free now
WTF with the ending?
“Is that what you wanted from Apex 2014?”
so he's the master of edge guarding, la di frickin da.
Did M2K get banned for messing with matches?
Wait what ? What did he do ? Are you talking about his playstyle ? Cause im pretty sure hes banned in certain tournaments.
Nah i heard from a tournament player that he was fixing matches with certain people to get certain match ups or something like that
***** Huuuummm I'm not sure. I guess it would depend on the tournament.
***** a looooooooooooong long time ago, him and ADHD. Idk a lot about it, so you'll have to do more research yourself
***** damn wow
dat pin-ball wizard shoutout
LOL smooth prog and D1 sleeping on the job at the start
yo, this game is so hype
18:07 ..was i the only one who saw this?
OMFG THAT FALCO REALLY IMPRESSIVE
The match that got me into melee
Match?
m2k depends on the ledge mostly kinda lame just seem him hanging there whenever he can
ay but doesnt matter how win
can someone SIMPLY, explain why sheik is considered top 5?
is that a short hop neutral Air (A button right) just short jump then an A button.. is that how he's killing so easily? or is he using C stick to do that?!?!
F-air

sorry lad
Dr. Pp ftw the winner is falco!!
These guys make me want to put down my Gamecube controller never to pick it up again.
PP's fingers from 12:00-12:30 :0
11:42 beast
DOLPHIN SLAASSSHHH
3:06 someone was hungry
+Art yom Sounds more like a commentator fart ROFL
Decent players.
Imaging Smash 4 if its like this then Mega man is most likely going to wreck with his down B
I'm exactly the 90,000th viewer. No joke! :D
Free Smashers!
"Mew2king started playing a lot more for fun."
...the Smash 4 fan in me is saying that's okay, but the Melee elitism in me is saying how dare you...
AzCannibalChris >pic related
The Falco player is good, but the other dude blows. I could crush him.
Lol you're hilarious
LOL! that ending!
11:43!!!!
The commentators reaction though...:)
