    Everyone has a story.
Before there was writing, stories still existed because people existed. From the beginning, people have sought to communicate with one another.
Oral stories, or tales told aloud, were first used to inform. A caveman could tell his friend exactly where the Mastodon herd was grazing so he could pop some Mastodon ribs on the grill. Stories served as a means of communicating news, teaching moral principles and tribal law, and explaining the origins of Life, the Universe, and all living things.
Stories have been passed on by word of mouth long before reading and writing became commonplace. They have taken many forms, including songs, poetry, chants, dance, ghost tales, and so on.
No one knows exactly when the first story was actually told. Did it happen in the gloomy recess of a cave around a flickering fire told by a primitive hunter? Or by a tribe passing on the story of creation to its children? We may never know.
As families grouped with other families and created clans, the storyteller, who was good at telling heroic events and other important events of the tribe, began to reach a position of respect and power. People found them interesting and began to listen to them. Storytelling day became very important.
Before man learned to write, he had to rely on his memory. A good storyteller was always respected because he had all the information! He could easily find an audience eager to devour every exciting bit.
Today, stories are ingrained in our societies and culture. Movies, books, music, news media, religions, architecture and painting, you name it, are all used to tell our stories. The influence of storytelling is in all aspects of our lives. They help to define our values, desires, and dreams, as well as our prejudices and hatreds.
Storytelling is one of the many things that define and bind our humanity.
