Recover the Most Gold with the Least Effort - Production Smelting Techniques!

  • In this video, Jason shows his most recent technique for production smelting. Since it's incredibly time consuming to try to recover all the gold when smelting, it's best to get as much as possible on the first smelt and save the slag for later reprocessing. Jason shares the flux recipe and techniques he uses to recover around 95% of the gold on the first smelt.

This man is awesome he helps by putting out these videos. Travels the world educating and helping others about gold recovery. Has his own plant and trunk key system, and still finds time to answer questions and help the smallest producer with help and knowledge. True hero wish I could give him more time in a day to do all he does but I don't possess that power m. What I can do is tell him thanks for the help might not even been more than a few sentences but did help me dial it in a little and for that I'm thankful for his help and content 🙏

Great Video Jason! You might wanna stay away from using those channel locks and get back to using forge crucible tongs or tools. I have seen and had a few crucibles break on me when using channel locks. Not good to have molten anything splash. Not to mention having to re-smelt again.

Thanks for that, ought to xrf your material beforehand so as to assess the accuracy of that method of assay by comparison with your smelting measurements.
I like how you provide source links to the essential things needed to do the smelting.
Sometimes you use lead and other times lead litharge which is harder to obtain.
I guess it is best to use the lead litharge else you would not go thru the trouble to obtain it.

The law of diminishing returns. It really is a matter of gauging effort vs. reward. Smelting and re-smelting to get every bit of gold becomes less cost-effective with each attempt.

I just looked at two dozen thermometers. I think that welders use some stupid thing like the color of the metal but if there's a thermometer you recommend. Am I alone in thinking that's a pretty cool one?
That looked like a huge jump away from the more basic fluxes, no kidding.
No silica? I suppose it's in there already as table material.
    Thank you very much again.

I do wonder. If you lose hypothetically 5% of your gold in slag etc. have you tried mercury? I know your tables you’ve shown actually can even help recover mercury waste from ore, and mercury isn’t super great for the environment. But if you do it methodical and use a mercury retort to capture the mercury perhaps it might be worth trying once for a comparison. It’d make a heck of a video that’s for sure. When ask Jeff Williams did a video on mercury retorts and amalgam I was dumbfounded.
You could do a video where you compare two processes. You could recrush and process some waste that might have 5% gold in it and process how you normally would and then also process a batch using the mercury retort and amalgam method to see if there’s a big difference in gold recovery. If there’s no big difference then it’d show mercury isn’t worth messing worth, but if mercury is way super in some processes it’d be worth noting.

Thanks Jas for producing these vids, Im new to the game of gold but have learnt plenty from your wealth of experience 👍👍
I’ve been trying some simple smelting myself using borax method but not having any success.. I’m using a small graphite crucible with your lpg/vacuum heat source.. I heated the gold/borax mix( all dry) as much as I could but couldn’t get it to a viscosity which would pour, it just all stuck inside the crucible, looked like the borax slag had absorbed graphite from the crucible but the gold did not seem to melt together at all. I have not got a furnace so maybe not enough heat, I don’t know where I’m going wrong? Any suggestions would be huge help. And thanks again for the great videos.
    Cheers

      @GOLD_FEVER Рік тому

Jason never replies here. So i will share with you what i did:
I had the same problem , and i have found that you want to make sure your crucible is well protected from any wind or rain or any cold weather (optimally you would do this in the heat of summer in a covered area with no wind.
Now the next level is to buy some heat proof wool . something like kao wool and make a little oven for your crucible. that way you can really create a space that won't lose heat and really insulate it and help with heat loss.
It is not required however. As long as you make sure you don't have any wind you should be ok.
Now , it may melt within 10 mins or it may melt in 45 minutes. IT all depends on how small your amount and crucible is and how much gas you are using.
I personally would NOT use a graphite crucible. I would go for the little cups they have the white cheap ones on amazon. They do well after you glaze them (i assume you know about glazing but if not research crucible glazing)
      And that's pretty much it.
Make sure to use the right amount of borax and a trick to doing that if you have powdery light gold is to put some borax in there , melt it down nicely then put your gold in. so that your gold doesn't fly away from the strength of the flame and sticks to the borax.
And also it is hard to tell where the optimal heat is at in terms of how far away from the gold you want to keep the torch for it to melt properly. All i know is that when i did melt it ( at the most i did about 2 ounces) it took a WHILE one day and i didn't melt it, and the next day i hunkered down and it melted in about 20 minutes... This is to illustrate that unless you have an oxy -acetylene torch, you have to REALLY get everything right for gold to melt well. And yes i still haven't been able to get it hot enough to pour into a mold just using propane...
It tends to melt just enough to where it is liquid but if you take the torch off it for a second or two it will solidify QUICK.
      Hope this helps.
