Hi, were going to talk about stripping paint.
There are two ways to strip paint. We have a heat gun, a heat gun is not the same as a blow dryer. This has a little more horse power. You have to be careful with it. The other way is a chemical stripper. They both have their pro's and con's.
A heat gun is kind of like ironing. You want to be methodical and not hold it in one place too long. The heat, will loosen up the layers of paint and you can scrape it off. The plus point is you don't have to inhale to the chemicals from a chemical stripper.
Alright, so were going to do a section here for you. Show you the heat gun. [background noise] Pretty soon you will see it start to bubble...It is okay to use this on wood, but, be methodical about it and be careful. Were going to see whole layers of paint come off...It is good to do just a section at a time...This is not a fast process...Wow look at that...So plan your weekend accordingly and always use safety measures, long sleeves and gloves...So it may not be fast but this is an efficient way to strip paint if you are very careful. - Навчання та стиль
It is a fast process with the heat gun as long as you ignore him and do it properly. After you take off the first bit of paint you want to hold the scraper behind the heat gun and move in long steady motion applying pressure on the crater as you move. You don't need to wait for the paint to bubble, it will just slide of in long pieces, it's the steam and air expanding underneath the paint that releases it, the bubbles are just superficial and happen last because there is not much air between layers of paint.
That worked! Didn't have to let it bubble.
Thanks!
Also using the narrow attachment, the end comes together with a small slit concentrates the heat in one small band.
I just use the wide flat mouth attachment as the scraper then heat and scrape at the same time!
Thank you soooooo much!
Another quick way, that may be slightly a bit more effort… go buy a new piece of trim wood, rip the old one off, and replace it.
Thank you. This was very helpful. I did not realize that it was a slower/sectional process; however I do not want to smell paint stripper. Plus the costs start to add up.
Thank you! I was using citrus strip and it was hell on earth. The heat gun removed all the layers of paint at once.
Planning on trying this out (just bought one) on a table I'm restoring. I used to just sand it off but it takes forever and ruins a lot of sanding paper. Thanks for the video.
Does it go faster with the thin mouth piece that spreads the air out more?
How do you heat the trim next to the wall without stripping the wall?
I always wondered what Cesc Fabrigas was up to these days.
Why do I find a link to Arsenal when searching for paint removal?
Wow I have a heat gun at home that I use everyday. And I also paint. I didn’t know lmfao. Hahahaha I’m over here sanding like a fool.
you also want to put a respiratory mask on. he was also holding the gun too close , this can burn the timber and damage it and cause the paint not to stick as well, or adhere in professional terms. be sure that the paint is not lead containing many paints used in the 1970`s contains lead. you can get swabs to test for lead. be safe, don't always trust UA-cam videos.
Is a cheap mask sufficient for this kind of work? Or should one buy an expensive one?
Toby Hammond oh I forgot about the lead paint.
I've just stripped my door frame from the 70's.
There's asbestos in the ceiling artex as well.
If it is lead based paint what woudl you suggest to get the paint off of the wood?
@@jazzbee2121 Chemical strippers and PPE for safety. Alternatively, other ways are steam, laser and CO2 dry ice blasting.
@@CraigMansfield are you still alive ??
Would it be faster n cheaper to replace trim
Now, how did I know that the keyboard cowboys would have a field day with this one LMAO
I’m trying to strip paint off an antique French county cabinet , there’s pain on paint and heavy varnish , I’ve been using my heat gun taking layers down , there’s some intricate design and what tool would you recommend for those areas please
Nice video well explained and lovely graphics. Good Job.

I tried a cheap chemical paint stripper it's messy to strip dissolved paint unfortunately I didn't have a better qaulity paint stripper one that could dissolve multiple layers of paint
What about if you live in an old house, do you want to be breathing in fumes from lead paint?
Very interesting...How do you control over drying of the putty / paint and prevent it from cracking or getting too brittle. I see the there is no temperature control in the heat gun..
Don’t hold it there to long. You will know when you start to use the metal stripper. I hold it and you can easily strip the paint and glide. You don’t have to just hold gun like this
Is that paint lead based? A filter mask and ventilation might be needed.
Yup. I was already thinking about getting doors dipped when you used the word methodical. I'm more a Homer Simpson of DIY. do I want it done right or fast? I usually go fast then give up and get a professional
I have French doors with lots of small glass windows. I want to strip the paint that is around all the trim. Is it okay to use a heat gun this close to glass? Thank you!
I think that there's a big risk of shattering the glass with the heat. If I were ever going to try stripping near glass, at the very least I'd cover the glass with a few layers of insulating material.
Thank you. 🙂
Wish you would have showed the finished product
Is the body made from Investment casting process??
that's better then using loud tools the heat gun is perfect!
that is a freshly painted surface you did, which isn't helpful try doing an old surface which would help us
Put the attachment on and use it as a scraper as you heat 10x faster than heating then using a separate scraper!
horse power that was funny
A torch is far better than a heat gun and very fast.
Not protective glasses? And you are inhaling the fumes from melting paint.
+Thom Holland
Glasses don't prevent inhaling!
+Kathy Blomquist yes, I realize that.
@@CowboyTech So why ask it then lol. You made a mistake and mean no protection or use of masks.
@@Simlife101 technically you can inhale through eyes as well...
Use detachable metal scraper with the gun it's much quicker
Detachable metal scraper?
@@cliffcarlo180 I think he's referring to the one that attaches to the heat gun's tip : www.amazon.com/Accessory-Scraper-Spring-Soldering-Welding/dp/B01EE79Q8Q
How I can remove old paint from big walls? This techinque will take decades to remove paint from my house.
Sand them down or use stabiliser or zinser paint to cover them, skim if needed - ready for painting
Lol I'm just using a heat gun
@@g-wiz6150 have you finished? Lol
If you're referring to old, cracked paint, especially lead paint, you should buy and use an infrared paint-removing lamp. They aren't cheap, but they'll get the job done way better than anything else. This is the one that I'm planning on buying for getting rid of lead paint in my house -- Speedheater (you'll have to Google it, as YT won't allow me to paste a link to the site).
woodprix scripts includes most of woodworking plans you can find
These heat guns are only two heat seatings get a three speed but be careful
Warning PLEASE WEAR A MASK. Many old houses have layers of Lead based paint in the wood/timber work which you do not want to be breath in 😮
The correct Mask.
👍👍👍
May not be fast but efficient? I think he meant "effective".
no on drywall?
This is to strip paint off wood really not walls.
@@Simlife101 you are absolutely right about the wood/timber , the heat gun may also be used on walls / panels etc. Including drywall (also known as) plasterboard to remove old, cracked , peeling and built up coates of Gloss ENAMEL paint mainly in Bathrooms and Kitchens in very old houses HOWEVER extreme caution and care is required to avoid ruining/damaging the SURFACE (paper lining the Gypsum Plasterboard)
I've been in the Building
Industry 32 years experience is everything, having said that.... please take into consideration that every job is different and sometimes things dont go as planned or workout the way it's expected or as i have explained it where it unfortunately becomes a situation of stop , rethink , better strategy and a fresh start.......and job DONE ! ☝️😎🚬😉👍
Haha
This is not efficient but it's quick if your careful...
What!!
Wow! I've watched two videos about how to strip old paint from wood, but I still haven't heard from any of the people that posted the videos as to what temperature they recommend for doing this. Many heat guns come with variable heat ranges, including the one I own. I guess that common sense dictates that you use the lowest temperature that will get the job done, Yes? Heat guns can start a fire if you are not careful with them...
Lyael956 just try it out on a consealed place
I put my wagner all the way up to 1300. Works good.
@@HAIL666FE wow! That's some serious wagner 😅
2013 it's post the video ...the legend it's say it's still scrape the paint and now🤣🤣🤣🤣
lel
Clearly someone used google translate 😂😂😂
2013 HE POSTED THE VIDEO,
LEGEND HAS IT HE IS STILL SCRAPING TO THIS DAY.
Oh my! Looks like your trying to burn the house down.
Soo the lesson of this video is that watching paint dry is faster and more entertaining.
Bad technique. Some heat guns would catch that paint on fire if you held it that close.
Jason Honingford well it’s better to keep heat moving. Like the way I continually move it while shaping cast acrylic sheet.
Really greedy with the ads there UA-cam

shoulda put the mask on for this one lad, #safetyevenonthetoilet #iloveyoudavethesafetypaintergod
Im stripping a couple old lead paint doors today def will use
Just hand sand
In this way you will be finisshed in lets say year ,year and a hallf
Still need a mask
Yeah, especially since I bet some of those bottom layers are lead-based. Always need a respirator mask.
gloves and mask bro
Should definitely wear a mask, but if you can keep the temp below 1,085 degrees the lead won't vaporize.
OSCHA says keep under 700 degrees for lead fumes
Fair point, did some additional research and lead oxide (which is what is typically used in paint) is around 800 degrees F.
Why not just paint over it?
Did you just use the heat gun on drywall? uhhh, I don't think it your going to get the end results you were looking for.
😂 don’t listen to this giy
Hahaha
could have condensed video to 25% - content would be superior.
Wack Job
Mmm wouldn't mind seeing him strip. Lol
You can learn more about it on woodprix website I think.
