  • Elevation is around 3500ft above sea level (4000ft at the very end), so peak power/torque is down a bit (roughly 9.0-9.5%). Exhaust is also a bit less robust. Tone is deeper at sea level.
    Engine:
    MY2000 Toyota 3.0L V6 - 1MZ-FE,
    Ported and rebuilt,
    Stock y-pipe with the nasty T-merge (robs power)
    Exhaust size after merge is 2.25" (stock)
    Custom Magnaflow transverse, dual exit muffler (unknown type)
    A short mountain drive. Ride along. This is a raw video. Nothing has been changed or enhanced. I used a bit of foam around the microphones to cut down on wind noise. Works pretty well. There was an option on my phone to reduce wind noise as well, but nothing works better than foam.

    Love the sound of the 1MZ-FE. Incredibly reliable, well-preforming and underrated engine. Sounds great man.
    I'm thinking of straight piping my '95 Avalon XLS to help her speak up a little more when I put my foot down.

    Even with around 225,000 miles driving MR2s, I had to watch this to the end. It really makes the case for having one! The 1MZ also seemed to handle the massive climb well.

    What a brilliant sound!
    The engine Toyota should have fitted from the start.
    Thanks for posting.

    Ah thank you! The 1MZ is out of a 2000 Solara V6, ECU is from a 1999 Camry V6. I'm using a 2001 S51, which is like an S54 but with longer gears for the increased torque output. I, personally, wouldn't recommend it for drag racing as it's not beefy like the E153.
    Swap took roughly a year, but it was my first time doing anything of the sort. First engine rebuild too. The wiring was a pain, but straightforward with both diagrams. It's pretty involved. My swap is California smog legal.

    My dad has owned a 92 Camry for over 15 vears now, and it's one, if not the best sounding cars i ever sat in :D Also, it has been owned with good care, and a year ago it produces 218 whp on dyno :) We raced Mercedeses and BMWs on the autobhan several times and it's really good to see them disappear in the mirror :DDDDD

    Some of the MR2 guys that race on track have made front wings or splitters. You won't be able to go fast enough on the street to produce any meaningful downforce. The limits of the car are high enough that downforce is really only required in a competitive environment.
    The rest is making the right suspension and alignment setup choices as well. That's based on your driving style.

    I should add that it's best to have a donor car so you know you have all of the parts and any extra wires. I ran wires through the fuel tank tunnel to the rear trunk for my OBDII connector so that I can have it on the driver's side for data logging with a laptop. For me, wiring took the longest. Fitting and installing the engine/trans took about a weekend by myself. It must be installed from the bottom.

    Beautiful scenic pictures and awesome powerful engine sound. I liked that you did not change lane, although you seemed to drive fast.

  • @jmzw20
    @jmzw20  11 років тому

    1) Using a tach adapter from one of the MR2OC guys.
    2) Not having access to a vehicle lift and the wiring. Getting the engine/trans in the car was straightforward. Wiring was time consuming, but I traced everything beforehand. Used a Molex connector kit to make a jumper harness between the engine/chassis.
    3) Clutch is an S51 disc with a V6 pressure plate and 1MZ Fidanza flywheel. Clutch companies can also make a 3SGTE or 1MZ (E153) disc with the S51/54 splines so you have more surface area.

    I didn't downshift to 2nd, so that was about 1500-5500rpm in 3rd. Torque. I could've got off the corner faster in 2nd, but this wasn't a race.

    having fun yet :) nice, I like that.
    amazing how smooth and quiet it can be at idle while nicely growling upon acceleration :) my 1mz-fe is much more muffled (stock solara automatic exhaust, calif specs), but I also keep the stock muffler still. maybe i will consider a Magnaflow muffler as an upgrade in future :)
    and man, I am jealous of the weather and roads! can't have that here in Jersey at this time of year :(

  • @jmzw20
    @jmzw20  12 років тому

    It's certainly involving. You need to be able to read and follow wiring diagrams, be able to make connectors, repin connectors, and do overall wiring (or have it done by someone instead), troubleshoot any issues quickly, and use a custom passenger side motor mount. 3/4 mounts are on the transaxle.

  • @jmzw20
    @jmzw20  11 років тому

    @igotastove Yeah S54 disc. Just know that the surface area of the disc is smaller than the V6 pressure plate. Doesn't cause major issues. Larger friction area = more torque loading without slippage. Swapping boards works too. I'm using the EGR since I live in California.

  • @jmzw20
    @jmzw20  11 років тому

    The only issue I've had is getting the front tires up to temperature, but that's a trait of many MR cars. For the most part, my chassis is well-balanced and very easy to drive. Fronts wear at a rate that is 1/2 that of the rears.
    Other than front aero, tire pressure (I run 25 psi up front), or increased front negative camber, there's not much you can do to increase front grip. You can, of course, use spacers and run wider tires and slightly softer springs to mitigate that as well.

    I used to live in Yukipa and this looks alot like the HWY going out towards 29 palm and such. Used to love running those roads with my old 240SX, I can only guess how nice it is in a MR2

  • @jmzw20
    @jmzw20  11 років тому +1

    @igotastove ACT can make a larger E153 disc with S54 splines, but it gets a little expensive. I'm using the stock Toyota/Aisin S51 clutch disc without issue, but you'll definitely notice the surface area difference visually. 26k miles in, no clutch slip.

    Yeah, this particular Magnaflow transverse, dual-outlet (like stock) sounded pretty good with the 5SFE too. Not sure how the newer mufflers sound. This was recorded in 2011, so I had a Droid X2 at the time.

  • @jmzw20

    The 3VZ and 1MZ use the same flywheel and PP. Clutch disc depends on transmission used.

    It's a custom, transversely mounted, single inlet, dual oulet Magnaflow from 10-15 years ago. I'm not sure how similar it is to Magnaflow's offerings today. I kinda want to bring it to Magnaflow and have them look at it to tell me which one it's based on.

    sounded really badass. I am debating on this swap with a 3vz right now and have a few questions.
    1. How did you solve the Tachometer problem?
    2. What was the most difficult part of this swap you recall?
    3. How is your clutch system set up?(that part is really confusing me)
    Thanks

    How much does a V6 swap change the balance of the car? AKA does it completely destroy it and make it understeer or make it better coming out of the turns the turns?

    • @hunteraltman4762
      @hunteraltman4762 5 років тому

      It makes it much much better coming out of turns. It's an aluminum head and aluminum block so it's about a couple hundred pounds lighter in the rear, plus more usable torque with the v6. I've owned two 1mz swaps

    • @hunteraltman4762
      @hunteraltman4762 5 років тому +1

      Make sure you use a wide tire in the rear and it will really grip down on throttle.

  • @igotastove

    I would be using my S54, So I should be able to use 5s clutch disk right?
    The wiring harness/Pulley side engine mount would be taken care of professionally.
    As for the tach I was gonna try and swap the boards from the camry with the ones on my mr2 cluster.
    All the rest is just running hoses and capping off EGR right?
    So I can use the 1MZ lightweight flywheel no problem?

  • @usagimoto1423
    @usagimoto1423 8 років тому +1

    How much power were you able to pull out of it?

    • @jmzw20
      @jmzw20  8 років тому +1

      It's putting out around 180-185whp and 190-195wtq on stock cams. The cams are pretty conservative (220 duration, 8mm lift), so there's more there. Or about 210hp and 220lb-ft (crank).
      Most of us just end up looking for a TRD supercharger because it's cheaper in the long run than chasing N/A power.

    • @usagimoto1423
      @usagimoto1423 8 років тому +1

      lolz, yeah im chasing the NA power. Wish me luck. Spent 2100 on cams and 1300 on custom headers

    so as far as wiring goes. is it as easy as getting the harness from the camry and swapping it or...?

    • @jmzw20
      @jmzw20  10 років тому +1

      No, you have to splice harnesses. It's time consuming. I made a replaceable jumper harness, so I put the chassis side on some connectors and the engine side on 2 main connectors.

    Hey man, I'm about to start wiring up my v6 swap... Is their anything you could to help? wiring diagrams, wire color matching chart, anything? I would greatly appreciate from one mr2 fanatic to another. I am putting a 2001 non vvti 1mz into a 92 5sfe car

    • @jmzw20
      @jmzw20  7 років тому +1

      I have wiring diagrams for the 1MZ, but you'll need MR2 diagrams from the service manual.
      Here's a complete layout:
      drive.google.com
      I added the 5SFE values myself. They are correct for a 1991-1992 model.
      2001 Solara wiring: drive.google.com/file/d/0B_piOguU9u__bnZlNTJYMFlfemM/view?usp=drivesdk
      2001 Solara repair manual:

      You're welcome. There are 2 ECU types: AFR sensor and O2 sensor. The wiring is slightly different between the two. It doesn't change when you ground the ECU terminal to M/T. I have an AFR sensor ECU.
      I can tell you which one you have if you give me the ECU part number.
