The lighting in this scene is very well done. The shadows combined with Dafoe's facial structure make his eyes stand out with a very grave expression. As he pulls his heart out, it casts a red light strongly in the background as well as on the apostles, further complimenting his ominous message.

I liked this movie, but this scene was just plain weird. I haven't read the novel, so I have no idea if it's in there also or if this is a scene the filmmakers made up.
The novel is a bit more subtle about it, but I think it's in there in some for, but I haven't read it in since I was a teenager and got big into high-fantasy after reading Tolkien.
in the novel Christ says to himself to tear out his heart so he can seek vengeance for john. Vengeance belongs to God so he took it on himself by telling himself to tear out his heart. In the movie he legit does this but I think its symbolism.
@@cd123atd4e Jesus said he came not to bring peace but a sword. So it's not really exact but makes the point. Jesus came to destroy Satan's lies. Yes through violence and death eternal victory is won by God. He kills our bodies so our souls will be saved. We were Angels. We fell from Heaven. We became mortal men. We sin and die, over and over and when we are ready to follow Jesus he leads us back to eternal life and glory.
All I can think about when I see this is the story Kevin Smith once told about how he would do a Jesus movie. With Christ up on the cross about to be killed but suddenly two ninjas swing in to save him. Ninjas with uzis! Just moving down contortions left and right untill one of them busts out a hammer and rips the nails from Jesus's hands and feet and carries him to safety. Then Jesus decides to become an account because hes good with numbers and says fuck you to god and starts worshiping Satan! Just holding black mass in between crunching numbers. Its a good story look it up.
The Credible Hulk you know what's funny. I use that to site why I enjoy Batman V Superman. I got that moment when Batman crafted that kryptonite spear. and goes on that rampage in the alternate future. "fucking get em Bruce! chop em down! oh shit Batman is here." thank you Kevin Smith
it's like it's about a bodhisattva who is too beautiful for this world so instead of making any sense you just have to be a crazy person, ponderous and parable-bolic, who in the case of Jesus, never actually existed in the first place
Yikes! They just turned Christianity into some perverted cult! Incidentally, how was Jesus supposed to live without his heart? I mean, I know he's God, but he's also fully human, and you can't live without your heart. If I was one of the disciples and I saw him take his own heart out, I'd run for my life, not fall down and worship him. Artistic license taken WAY too far.
The book deals with Jesus' human side eventually taking over and doing what humans would do in his position. If you were human, vunrable with temptations love and peace wouldn't suffice in an uncivilised society but the axe ! The axe is a manmade tool that can be turned into a weapon. Jesus goes though a rite of passage from a hybrid of god and human to god and then to human and to god again. It's a symbolism also there is no such thing as artistic license in relegious films because one can argue the bible is one artistic license by itself and the quran and all bible like books.
RomaNos All right, granted this movie is based on the book, not the Bible. In that case, this scene makes a lot more sense. However, I don't agree that the Bible is an artistic license (a.k.a. a lie).
People tend to forget this is symbolic of some of a few things.. 1. This was the period of the Miracles of Jesus before he captured 2. represents some of the contradictory attributions and quotes of jesus in the bible. The king of peace in one sentence.... but in another " I have come to bring a sword, to set a man at variance...his enemies will be members of his own household.... one cannot come to heaven except be born again etc. Jesus does several pivot shifts during this movie...this is just one of them. The whole idea is that god tells jesus only what he needs to know at the time, never revealing the entire plan ahead of time as it would probably cause his humanity to rebuke the ultimate sacrifice necessary.
Jesus was so METAL
lol
Yes! 1000 times this!!
Pulling your own heart out of your chest and showing it to your friends is always Metal.
There is a divine reason we tell stories and create art . I can't say more
its called "feeling"
This is the most powerful scene in the movie imo.

Scorsese is a Master of cinema.
A baroque painting into motion picture.
A great movie, based on an extraordinary book.
The heart Judas, first we start with the heart!!!!!

To quote Kevin Smith:
"Whooaaah shit! JESUS is here! It's ON!"
Lol
GET 'EM JESUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The whole reason I looked this clip up was because of him
“Harry! First we attack his heart!”

Isaiah 63.
awesome
It was symbolism to remove his heart, not meant to be taken litterally.

It’s the wrath of God. He said he wanted to cut the devils throat and I’M ALL FOR IT! ✝️🙏
I'm still waiting for Connor and Murphy Macmanus to show up...
Revenge not vengeance.

This is not the Biblical story. It's a weirdo Greek's novel.
Is this film accurate?
not from what my spirit tells me

About as accurate as anything in the actual Bible. So no. Still entertaining and thought-provoking though.
@@samuelswenson1505 Well said! That is a strong meditation.
I don't know if the film is accurate, but many of the quotes are invariably attributed to him via the canonical text.

Deborah Ingle I didn't say it's a lie but exaggerated as hell, most definitely.
How do you know it's so exaggerated?
Deborah Ingle read the bible and you'll see.
