Not only are the girls beautiful, and the dancing superb, but I love the upbeat big band tunes as well.
Happy melodies make happy memories.
Awesome. What a great time it was! God bless for sharing!
A milestone: the first Royal Variety Show to be televised. It got the highest audience ever for a British light entertainment telecast, a record which in these multichannel days (there were only two then) is unlikely ever to be beaten. The emcee was Bruce Forsyth, beginning a 50-year career which culminated in a successful campaign to get him a knighthood.
Imagine being a young woman going on to dance for the royals and tens of millions of viewers, knowing that the slightest slip would throw the routine out of sync. No retakes possible.
They were absolutely lovely.
Wow I used to love the tiller girls Sunday night day before school in the sixties the years fly
John Tiller, who began life as a cotton broker in Manchester, invented precision formation dancing. He set up schools and established troupes which performed the world over. For example, the original British team directly inspired the Rockettes when Flo Ziegfeld imported them for his 1922 Follies.
By any measure Tiller was one of the most influential choreographers in history. A hard taskmaster, he set standards in costume, looks, height and work ethic comparable with those of WS Gilbert in musical stagecraft. After Tiller died in 1925 his family carried on his work for decades, making British chorus lines the gold standard. The tall British showgirl was in demand on Broadway and at the Folies Bergere and Crazy Horse in Paris.
Fun fact: Tiller Girls held the record for the longest line: 40 dancers kicking and wheeling in unison.
It’s hardly choreography, just standing in a line kicking their legs.
@@GradKat Plus splitting into two sections, wheeling, forming circles and multi-sections, all while keeping a steady beat and in perfect unison with 20-30 others. One of the most mentally and physically taxing kinds of dancing.
@@esmeephillips5888 I think gradcat is trying to piss off us folks who might take our dancing a little too seriously. Lol
@@markberryhill2715Difficult to take this standard of accomplishment too seriously.
Gorgeous ladies
Man, the chorus kickline is a dying art. The only troupe that still does it are the Rockettes, and even they don’t really do kicklines like these anymore.
This was a time of growth in British society. Through mismanagement by Parlimentarians of all parties. We have evolved into a society in decay. Macmillian did say "You have never had it so good"
¡¡Divino...!!
👍👍👌👌👏👏🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
The great old days of brilliant entertainment 👍
This was the first Royal Command Performance to be telecast, and the most watched TV program yet shown in Britain. The emcee, Bruce Forsyth, went on to be a star for nearly sixty years and was knighted.

Hi Mr. J, I am in the centre of this line. Can I get a link to this video please. Thanks for posting so many clips from the Tiller Girls. When Tillers reformed in 1990 there is a Royal Variety Show 1991 at the Victoria Palace. Again, many thanks.
Hello Kerry could I ask if you knew of a tiller girl called jacqueline.. May have been using the name Jane potentially 7th in line in 1961? If you have any information that would be amazing :)
