Folliculitis is the infection and inflammation of one or more hair follicles. The condition may occur anywhere on hair-covered skin. The rash may appear as pimples that come to white tips on the face, chest, back, arms, legs, buttocks, or head.[1]
    rash (reddened skin area)
    itching skin
pimples or pustules located around a hair or follicle; may be confused with chicken pox
    may crust over
typically occur on neck, armpit, or groin
    may present as genital lesions
spreading from leg to arm to body through improper treatment with antibiotics
    Complications
Condition can develop into a more severe skin condition such as cellulitis or abscess.[1]
    Causes
Most carbuncles, boils, and other cases of folliculitis develop from Staphylococcus aureus.[1]
Folliculitis starts with the introduction of a skin pathogen to a hair follicle. Hair follicles can also be damaged by friction from clothing, an insect bite,[2] blockage of the follicle, shaving, or braids that are very tight and close to the scalp. The damaged follicles are then infected by Staphylococcus. Folliculitis can affect people of all ages.[citation needed]
Iron-deficiency anemia is sometimes associated with chronic cases.[citation needed]
    Bacterial
    Staphylococcus aureus folliculitis[1]
Hot-tub folliculitis is caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa.[3] The folliculitis usually occurs after sitting in a hot tub that was not properly cleaned before use. Symptoms are found around the body parts that sit in the hot tub - the legs, hips, chest, buttocks, and surrounding areas. Symptoms are amplified around regions that were covered by wet clothing, such as bathing suits.
Sycosis vulgaris, sycosis barbae, or barber's itch is a staphylococcal infection of the hair follicles in the bearded area of the face, usually the upper lip. Shaving aggravates the condition.
Gram-negative folliculitis may appear after prolonged acne treatment with antibiotics.[4]
    Fungal
    Main article: Fungal folliculitis
Tinea barbae is similar to barber's itch, but the infection is caused by the fungus T. rubrum.
Malassezia folliculitis, formerly known as Pityrosporum folliculitis, is caused by yeasts (fungi) of the genus Malassezia [1]
    Viral
Herpetic folliculitis is rarer, but may occur when herpes simplex virus infection spreads to nearby hair follicles appearing in groups or clusters[1] mostly around the mouth.
    Noninfectious
Pseudofolliculitis barbae is a disorder occurring when hair curves back into the skin and causes inflammation.
Eosinophilic folliculitis may appear in persons with impaired immune systems.
Folliculitis decalvans or tufted folliculitis usually affects the scalp. Several hairs arise from the same hair follicle. Scarring and permanent hair loss may follow. The cause is unknown.
Reaction to Demodex mite infestation may occasionally be misdiagnosed as folliculitis.
Folliculitis keloidalis scarring on the nape of the neck is most common among males with curly hair.
Oil folliculitis is inflammation of hair follicles due to exposure to various oils, and typically occurs on forearms or thighs. It is common in refinery workers, road workers, mechanics, and sheep shearers. Even makeup may cause it.
Malignancy may also be represented by recalcitrant cases.[5]
    Treatment
Most simple cases resolve on their own, but first-line treatments are typically topical medications.[1]
Topical antiseptic treatment is adequate for most cases.
Topical antibiotics, such as mupirocin or neomycin/polymyxin B/bacitracin ointment may be prescribed. Oral antibiotics may also be used.
Some patients may benefit from systemic narrow-spectrum penicillinase-resistant penicillins (such as dicloxacillin in the US or flucloxacillin in UK)
Fungal folliculitis may require an oral antifungal such as fluconazole. Topical antifungals such as econazole nitrate may also be effective.[1]

Been dealing with this for 13 years and this is what works for me and keeps it under control very well for the back of my head:
    1) keep your hair very short, but don’t shave
    2) Tend Skin Solution (it is pricey-$40 for 16oz, but it works wonders)
    3) shower daily, keep it clean
    4) intermittent Fasting & low carb diet (this is one that I recently discovered unintentionally, but it has definitely been helping)
Edit: Step 5) use an exfoliating scrub when you shower. Apply the tend skin after you shower when it’s dry. Leave it on for at least 10-20 min. Apply a moisturizer! I use aloe Vera and I apply a thin layer afterwards and it keeps your skin from getting too dry from the tend skin.
Over a year later and the back of my head still looks good and under control 👍🏼
Note: if you stop treatment, it will come back unfortunately. Especially if your diet is horrible.

I read some of the comments on this subject, and it's incredible how a person expects you to go on a strict diet to overcome this problem. I clicked on this video because I have it also, but I thought maybe there was a cure for the problem. Sadly, there is none, but I kept it in control and prevented outbreaks by washing my hair 3 times a day. Does this work for everyone? I just wanted to let you know that it works for me. I have used head and shoulders almond shampoo for some time now, and it caused the outbreaks to lessen. Beforehand, I was buying expensive shampoos that didn't help.
As you can see in my picture, I am a bodybuilder and eat healthy foods. However, be careful about what you cut out of your diet because it could cause more problems. I would only follow people's advice once I do more research on the subject. I noticed that when I sweat a lot, it irritates the problem, so I will go wash my hair, and the problem goes away and no longer bothers me. I know washing your hair a lot does not sound fun but look on the bright side. At least your hair will smell good all the time, lol. I hope this helps someone because my doctor at the VA didn't help much.

edit: Guys here is the conclusion!!!! Folliculitis has no cure. we can only prevent it from coming until the age of 31 years! my doc asked me to reduce meat intake, dairy products, oily foods. I'm going to follow a Strict Diet from now And Will Give My Feedback soon! Also Proper Hygiene is Important alongside with medications on time

Easy long term fix: have a clean diet + fasting :)
Avoid all added sugars, flours and processed foods and you are good to go. These foods increase your insulin a lot, thus causing a chain effect that throws the androgens (hormones) out of balance. Having high androgen levels will result in more sebum production and a higher risk of getting your follicles infected.
Pair the clean diet with at least 18 hours of fasting with two meals a day (example: 1st meal at 12PM, 2nd meal at 4PM) and this folliculitis will cure by itself in about 2-4 weeks.
Other things you might want to take into consideration: remove dairy, make sure your gut is healthy (eat sauerkraut), and please try to stay away from any antibiotics (topical or oral)
Good luck and you got this! :)

I tried a new bar shampoo & after that, I had folliculitis. I can’t even count how many shampoos I’ve tried, how many doctor visits, dermatologist visits, pills, shampoos, sprays, etc. I feel like I’ve tried everything & I can’t live like this. I don’t know what to do.
I feel hideous, I never want to go anywhere, I’m embarrassed, uncomfortable, I sweat a lot, so I have to put my hair up, but keeping it up hurts my scalp, because the spots are so painful.. I’m so miserable 😭

My Family Fixed This - Naturally:
      1. Wash your hair with Sulfur 8 shampoo, using a silicone scalp massager.
      2. Let it dry naturally. Be sure to blot the excess water with a brand new towel or one that you have never used on your hair / body before.
      3. That night, SMOTHER your entire head with Vaseline - wrap it in a scarf and sleep that way. Why? The easiest, most 'natural' way to kill the yeast / candida and anything else that is living on your scalp which is what is probably happening - in a matter of minutes - is to simply smother it - NO OXYGEN means no ability to breathe, thrive, grow or survive.
      4. The next morning, mix bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil (whatever ration you want...it really does not matter) into a bowl (do not use a metal spoon when mixing clay - use plastic or wood only). SMOTHER your scalp with the clay, let it dry then just sit under the shower and let it rinse off until the water runs clear. You may need to do this a few times to get all of the Vaseline off of your scalp and hair - but you'll see that you've just 'killed' the yeast when not one hair follicle itches.
Repeat weekly, or as often as you need to and be sure to hot wash with white vinegar and baking soda all of the bedding, towels, clothing and anything else that it may be living on. (fyi never mix bleach and vinegar). We tried this - and it literally solved the problem overnight. If there is a new issue we just repeat the process. Good luck and God Bless!

    • @lovethestage
      @lovethestage Рік тому

@@celestialcolors Hi! I can only share what works for my family and we've endured everything over the years! It's just a few simple natural ingredients that won't cause any harm, and may give you some relief if kept up as a part of your personal wellness routine. I can only suggest that others try it out, and experiment with different ways to include it in your maintenance plan. Worst case scenario is you don't get relief, but if it works then you've got a simple natural way to remove a lot of discomfort. We also do distilled water and baking soda mixed in squeeze bottles to saturate the scalp and hair, leave on for a few minutes, then add distilled water and apple cider vinegar for a few minutes, then rinse off and go! These two extra methods continue to make it very hard for all kinds of bacteria to grow on the scalp and live on the hair. Again, it's just how we do it and it has worked for decades - I'd give it a shot and see. I hope it works for you and others! Literally, nobody in our family has itchy scalp issues / dandruff anymore. Sometimes, its a few simple things that can make a big difference.

Honestly, at this point, though I do not have the money for it, I am planning to get myself into deep debt by getting laser hair removal on my entire body. The dermatologist doesn't seem to take me seriously, and it's bad to the point I scrape my back with a knife to relieve the itch.

I am colonized by staph A. and I get this. My immune system is weak due to Lyme disease and sick house syndrome -mold/fungal infection from USA paper housing getting wet.
Minocycline helps but I can't stay on it forever. It damages my skin terribly to sun exposure so it's a lose/lose situation. However, I do keep it on hand for impetigo or staph bactermia.
I found the eating iron like supplements or beef, inside or outside moisture/humidity, including showers, and sugar makes mine worse.
Oregano pills also help but it's best to take them with an oil like coconut or butter or palm BC they burn tissues easily. Had one pop in my throat and was terrible.
I'm going to lay off shaving with a blade (use a gentle face trimmer that doesn't scrap the skin instead) and shower faster to see how that helps.

Iron makes it worse? I started taking iron for completely different reasons, and to my surprise, I’ve noticed that it has been completely drying up and flattening out my folliculitis.. All of my stubborn spots that have been there for weeks, maybe even months that refused to fully go away, and have scabbed over, are now slowly disappearing…it’s wild how everyone’s body is so vastly different.

I've had reasonable results using very find ground coffee (espresso) mixed with coconut oil. Smother on your scalp at night and cover with a shower cap. I got the idea from listening to the Huberman podcast when it was mentioned that there is some research that sees positive effect on hair health from application of caffeine.

So sorry you are going through this. Here is another old family recipe that I'd love to share with you, in the hopes that it brings you some comfort. Try doing the baking soda and distilled water paste method (mix up in a big bowl - use gloves to help spread thickly/evenly all over your back, and all body hair), throw on a hooded robe so you can sit comfortably with the mixture on your scalp, body, etc. for a while - about 30 minutes. Then, stand in the shower steam but don't get wet yet, spray a mixture of distilled water and apple cider vinegar from head to toe and let it mix with the baking soda for 5 minutes, then you can rinse it all off. It's excellent for not only killing bacteria, but removing the pore clogging hard water deposits we get on our bodies from the tap water. This will help your pores get rid of the germs causing so many issues - and to moisturize we love just a hand full of organic almond oil - while the skin and scalp are still damp, then off we go! Wishing you the best of luck!🥰

Does this work even if your hair is semi-long like i just drench my scalp in vaseline ? Also why not a metal spoon

    • @lovethestage
      @lovethestage 2 роки тому +2

@@sprite2797 Yes - it works on long hair, but you should use the whole jar if necessary - keep a few jars handy just in case. Smother means smother! The bacteria lives in follicles and on strands so be very generous. I forgot to mention that you can put a shower cap on, then the scarf so you don't ruin the scarf and that you can also mix baking soda with distilled water in a squirt bottle, and after washing your hair, saturate it with the baking soda water for a few minutes, then rinse with apple cider vinegar/distilled water, let that sit for a few moments then rinse and you are good to go. Those additional methods (handed down by my grandmother which works for all my family) keep the bacteria away in between Vaseline treatments. So the thing about the metal spoon is this...not everyone buys the best quality brand of bentonite clay. Some manufacturers do not have the best quality clay, and metals and other objects are mixed in - to a very small degree but still, it can be in the mixture and the metals in the clay are attracted to the spoon - so just to be safe, use wood or plastic when stirring. I found this beautiful brand recently and it's been awesome - feel free to check it out! "Organic Ghassoul Clay Mask"
