Makes sure your gyros are all facing the same way, and make sure you have enough gyros. The more mass your ship has, the more gyros it needs. That includes the mass in storage.
I have to say, it is torturous realizing that the episode is suddenly ending when you could swear its only been 10 minutes since it started. Love the series, love the stress it is putting Skye under. Very much like him to both acknowledge he is unfamiliar with welding ships and immediately proceed to make a 7 welder monster with 10,000 storage as a beginner ship! Love the learning curve, but remember that ships do not have to be in that traditional space truck shape. The can be vertical and spherical, and they can have protruding arms holding the drills/welders/scrappers, so you can see what you are doing. Also, 100% download the mod that extends the range of the welders.
If you use large grid welders they have a much greater range. You could add small hinge with a large head to your welding ship and add a large welder. Angle it wherever you want and enjoy
My best tip is: Get used to use ALT + mouse to move your camera to the side of your ship while you are welding, keep moving your camera, get used to use ALT
i think sometimes skye forgets that he timesed his inventory by like 10 when he started the game so on a normal play through the inventory on the ship would be like a massive upgrade from doing things with the character
Welding ships are good when you don't modify the inventory size. Attaching the welding array to hinges so you can direct them up, straight or down can work well.
You got so much to learn about the ship building. Once you level up that skill enough, you would see that welding ships are in fact the way to go. Visually you base building skills are quite good as that easily transfers from other games you play, but functional building, especially with ships, is entirely different beast. Combining function with visuals is even harder. But don't take this as demeaning. I'm genuinely interested to see you learn this game!
You should have just set up a mining rig to take our the new tunnel and you could have done other things while it worked in the background - loving the series and even started playing again today - bravo sir
I was thinking about that myself; with welders - ideally large grid, if that's possible (my knowledge of this game is from Skye and Lunar Kolony) - on each side of a wheeled vehicle should work? On top for ceilings, below for floors and the sides for walls... Having not played the game, though, this theory could be fraught with peril.
Either throw some landing gears (They can take some abuse) or throw 1x1 wheels pointing downwards with zero friction just below where the welders are and you can level out, turn off the dampeners, and you can skirt that thing around without worrying about being perfectly horizontal. Or, make it a "truck" of sorts that can fly. Again, wheels at zero percent friction, or maybe at most 5% to control sideways movement, and you're golden.
Juuust leave the guy be for christs sakes. Even if he masters the welder ship, it wont make a huge difference in his project. Let the guy do it the way he likes to do it, so we see more incredible creations like the refinery, rather than a/b testing a ship pointlessly.

Could use the massive tunnel as a launch-pad for a massive ship that you would fly into space to the moon or mars. Always great to see the base grow larger. If you plan to explore rovers at some point a lower garage at lake level and a higher one at the mountain top could be interesting. If you fancy more drilling projects of course lol. Also a hint a welding rover would probably be much easier for the floors. Looking forward to future episodes regardless.
I would love to see Skye make a fleet of welding ships for different situations, one for walls one for ceilings etc. Not because I think it would be faster, but because its satisfying to watch welding ships work. Plus making spaceships is fun.
@Skye You could always build the welders straight on a drill arm, and use the blueprints of the other runnel on a projector. It would dig and weld up the tunnel in one go😊
@make one in creative 😜 As in Timberborn, I’m sure you run a creative world (any SE player has one for experimentation and blueprint crafting) and that’s fine, you still have to build up to the point you find yourself in. I think a welder ship is uefull to 3D print small fighters/scout ships and when your inventory is set to small, in a normal world 5 h2 tanks will fill a bounch of your inventory
I will say welders in atmosphere is a pain i understand, i believe you can find out how much each large atmospheric thruster lifts, as long as its more than the max weight your storage can hold you wont drop like a rock, and definitely a good idea with the bottom welders on a planet, hopefully i remember that when i get around to playing more! You seem to still be thinking of aligning everything with gravity. That is great for your base or rovers, but for ships it can be very limiting. I did it too when I started out, but if you build ships to fly regardless of what direction you are facing, things like your welding ship can be used better. You won’t have to move the welders to do the roof for example, just fly the ship upside down. I don’t think I explained this well but hopefully you got something out of it
@ just what I do, and I agree, with atmo thrusters that would take a lot and probably not worth it. Small Hydrogen thrusters makes it viable and worthwhile to me on planets. Looking forward to seeing what you do next time!
welding down with forward facing welders, probably don't have "help others" checked on the welders. You're doing great for being new, there's lots to learn!
Hey Skye you could put the welders on the welding ship on hinges so you can just change where they're facing depending on what job you need them to do. Love the series keep it up!
Maybe a good idea to place a row of 7 welders at the front the ship and 7 at the back, when you miss one with the front etc.. I think a bigger version is needed for it to work proper, 6 to 8 big engines in the ship instead of the 4 you've got now with this welding ship And I think it would look good if you got a bigger set of entrance doors next to 2 you've already got, the 2 smaller ones would be maintenance bays for your smaller mining and welding drone ships, and then one huge entrance (like the roofs entrance) next to it for the bigger ships to possibly enter.. just some food for thought Love this series, and very much enjoy seeing you build your heart out with this game!
I didn't think about the whole welding process, you have a problem at the beginning with estimating the height or distance from the surface, that's why I suggested a better angle.
For base work, use piped welders. Just add conveyors and welders, dismantling the welders that's completed with their work. With blueprints, it's so easy to make it almost self expanding, especially with complex builds.
My suggestion was mentioned below, but in order to get the blueprint, follow behind it for a bit, and lay out the pieces, and have it build the first section while retracting. Oh, never played the game, just a suggestion.. Loving the series
Yep, you're totally right... small grid welders, and even drills, have a pretty weak range. The large grid variants improve things a bit, but still not great. There are ways to get large grid welders or drills onto a small grid ship using rotors and such but it's a bit wonky. I know you likely want to keep things vanilla for now but in the future may be worth exploring a few mods. In particular, Build and Repair. There's also another mod that boosts welder and drill range but can't recall the name of it. Regardless, really enjoying your series and can tell you are having SO MUCH FUN. Cheers!!
Drills are the exception. They have a hugely outsized AOE compared to LG drills. SG are 1.5m, LG are 1.9m. I only know this due to recent research due to using LG miners in my current Scrapyard playthrough.
I think the problem you were having with the welding ship is that it's a small-grid welder (works fine to weld small-grid, but harder for large-grid). Try making a small, large-grid ship with welders. The different grids have different size bubbles of effect. Try one, on a hinge and/ore rotor, and see how it goes. Additionally, you should still have thrusters pointing up so that you can tip and not flip over. Gravity won't help you once you're no longer oriented the same way. Also, helpful hint: if you want to be able to turn without rolling by accident. The arrow keys on your keyboard can be used for pitch and yaw. So if you land to align with your grid, then don't touch the mouse when you take off and just use the arrow keys for turning, you should be good.
Once you’ve got the general floor pattern right, add welders to the end of your rotating tunnel borers with a projector on it. As the borers move up, they’ll copy the pattern upwards. Saving lots of manual welding time.
Yes indeed Skye, I totally agree, after all any new inspiring overlord of the known universe worth his salt does indeed need a suitably sized home base to park his battlefleet.
Well, welding ships have some utilities for example: if you put a hinge in front of it, and then put the welders, you can change the angle of welding, to floor, front and ceiling.
Here since you're drilling and welding in an essentially straight line, it makes sense to build a drilling wall pushed by pistons (at least until you reach your sparking room [edit, I think your spark room is on the other side, even better]), then retract, place blocks, replace outer layer of drills with welder and run it again, welding floor, walls and ceiling in one sweep.
Since you're mostly working on a flat surface. You can always use a gound vehicle instead of a ship. That way the welders will pretty much always be at the same level.
For welding floors maybe even a welding rover with wheels would be better? It would always be at the perfect height, less fuss, no hud issues, more welders, more weigh/storage.
Forget the welding ship, try a welding rover! way better for tunnels and try putting the welders on pivot to do floor and ceiling, and look up the mod Improved Welder Range for a QOL upgrade on welders.... Love the videos, we all have started somewhere XD
An idea you might want to steal from Engineered Coffee is that he has is wielding parts on a hinges and presets angles to -90, -45, 0, 45, 90. So when doing floors, he just sets them to -90 degrees and fly along the floor and it wields them easily.
Dear Skye, why not put the welders on the top or bottom of the ship? That way you can just go forward or side to side at a certain height. (You literally started building it while i typed this) Nice!
If you put the welders on a hinge, you can setup a toggle to put them at a specific angle to make certain tasks easier. that said, the main thing is .. 10x inventory..
I don't use conveyor juctions on my welding ships I use small cargo containers to add more storage. They essentially do the same thing in passing items but actually hold cargo which is important in big welding projects. Also, forward facing welders will do the floor just as good with a slight tip af the ship. I use them all the time. You don't need all of those. Every other works but turn on "help other welders".
If you're ok to adding mods and are looking into automation, you could look into mods like Path Auto Finder(PAM), Nanobot Build and Repair System, Nanite Control Facility. The difference between the nanite mods is that build and repair doesn't allow for auto queuing of auto fabrication unlike the nanite facility does.
You could also add hinges and then the welders attached to that (group the hinges if you have more than one) and on your hotbar in the ship you drag the hinge group with "go to angle" and then do that 3 different times so you can have -90, 0, +90. It'll allow you to adjust the position without having to faff around by increasing/decreasing speed/velocity on the hinges.
You sir have accomplished more in 2 weeks than I ever done playing this game lol I've had it 2 years and still can't get to grips with it always end up destroying everything I have made haha! Great series and you are enjoying this Space Engineers 2 is only round the corner so at least you have gotten in your practice ready for it! Keep up the videos
It might be cool if you extend the landing platform around the side of the cliff you extended towards, that would give a nice place to put a few cargo containers and hydrogen storage tanks. You could have a small side entrance into the base as well, maybe a two or three story narrow tower against the side of the cliff. Loving the series so far! (also you damaged one of the entrance pillars with the drills it needs a welding fix)
Fun fact, ship welders both large and small, did have a large range. Or so i heard, i never played when that was a thing sadly, those must have been the good days xD
hey skye, the ship idea is good. you could also build a flat car. the wheels at just the right height the welders dont touch the floor, add pistons to raise the car when your ready to do the roof. and you just slowly drive as it welds.
with the welding ship, perhaps make some wheels add to the ship, and design the ship for maxium up thrust with lots of cargo? maybe a few rows of welders so you can move faster?
Getting a balance of weight placement vs thrust power takes a while, adding gyros and locking them to keep you stable is also a trick you could use. in this game every extra 10 ships you build you look back at the ships prior and go .. what was i thinking. You are doing great though keep up the good work!
watching you fly and hearing you bash my most favorite kind of ship (welder ship)is super frustrating to me, hahaha but you're new to the game you'll get better at flying, and you'll learn the importance of a welding ship one you start building a big grid ship :P
when you build your welder ship make it so there's equal trust in all directions so you can fly upside down or pointing straight down without any effort
You can double down on the welders and have a second row of 7 behind the first. That might be able to go faster as the welders would overlap a bit and you would not have to start and stop so much. Then you need more thrusters, cargo, gyros... Then the welding ship would be as big as the entire floor.. :)
For the tunnel, why not make a welding rover? that way you don't have to mess with the gap between the block and the welder, ship roll and pitch, etc. You can do fine adjustments with ride height.
Putting those welders on hinges so you can switch between welding in front of you versus below you would make life easier for you. You probably also want to start putting downward pointing thrust just in case you get flipped (plus would enable AI flight if you ever got into that)
You can hold the LMB to start the welders/grinders/drills and then press i to open ship inventory, then you can release LMB and get out of inventory, and the welder/drill/grinder will keep working as if you were still pressing the LMB.
Welding ship is like any technology, just because you can use a thing, doesn't mean its practical to do so :) One thing I noticed was when you were flying left/right, the welding seemed to be more reliable and so I am wondering if you need welder depth and not just width so that you can speed along faster (if you want to pursue it for other projects). I was also pondering whether, as part of your go big or go home philosophy, whether a massive landing pad that connects to the top of the shafts where huge freighters could dock might be an interesting project...
Good day, I find that for mining and welding ships, 1 or 2 drills/welders can match up with medium cargos, but once you move to more Mass (weight) starts becoming an issue. Each cargo container has a dry mass (Med about 150, Large about 260) and then the weight of the contents. A Med holds about 3KL and a large 15KL. So given the same volume of stuff (1 Large = 5 Med) your ship will be dragging about more dead dry mass for the Meds vs the Large that is not able to be spit out the welders, or sucked in the drills and will always be carrying about. My rough rule in atmo is 2 large down thruster per Large cargo to carry the box and contents and then another Pair of Larges to carry the rest of the ship. Might need to add a couple smalls to get the absolute most carry cap if pre filling up the welder Inventory also or having making the shape more interesting. So for your welder that dropped, with the 9 meds (more weight then 2 larges and less carry capacity) and the welders that add a lot of mass each you should have added atlest 2 more large down fire thrusters. Personally I find welding ships most useful in space where mass is less of a issue when fully loaded (you just get used to more sluggish response) and to avoid O2 and Power issues from running the suit heater, light, and hand welder off just the suit.
what might improve Weldship opperation, ive seen people put in Cameras for reverse doking, so I bet you can position a camera underneath so you can see the floor and welders from the Cam Persective underneath the ship.
I love the series, sorry that i came into the game late. If no one else has stated you can change a few setting inside the welders to get them to work better. Turn on "Help Others" this will increase you welding speed per block. along with that you can place the welders in as a block instead of a tool on the hotbar. (Relax the grip on the mouse button)
If you had 2 or 3 rows of welders instead of just one, the second and third row would catch whatever the first row misses, so it would be more forgiving, and probably a fair bit faster too.
I always find with welding floors it works much more quickly to start at the front of the job and drag the welders over the welding surface, each to their own I guess. I also put my welders on hinges so I can adjust the angle (up, down or centre) on the fly without having to rebuild the ship. That's the thing with this game, gotta stop yourself thinking 2 dimensionally.... Always be asking yourself, is there a better way I could design this ship / base.
Question & Suggestion from a non-player so feel free to correct or ignore. Are there wheels to maybe make a welding car? Because then you might not have to worry about being too high. And you can make it taller as you need to for when you do roofs or wider when you do walls.
@@SkyeStormewheels at zero friction = Sudo hover craft. Like bumpers or guides. They will keep the welder at the correct height but still let you make tight corners.
Hi Sky if your ship keeps roling, add a gyrosope that is on overright and add it to the hot bar where you can switch it on and off. If you get it right it should keep you level
Maybe... A welding ship where the Welders fold down from the sides? It would be semi collapsible then. But it would mean the welders also need to be pure toggle on and off. Not that it's that much trouble so you don't have to hold down the button. And landing gears would help the ship sit flat if they're placed front and back.
So the welder is awesome. The trick however, is that they should be on Hinges, so that they can flip to a position and then locked. Or built as a 'rover' with the wheels set to fricitonless and thrusters so it can hold itself up without lifting thrusters. (Though on a base like this you'd have to build walls to keep it from launching off the edge.)

i mean, you could put the welders downwards underneath the ship?
Or at least a row at the front?
and 10 seconds after i wrote this he does it.
So not so much deeper as wider or thicker?
Also ship mounted grinders might be usefull.
No! i will watch this all in absolute random order, the way youtube decided it should be,Thanks UA-cam! nice one Skye thanks mate :D
What’s the settings on inventories as your character shouldn’t be holding more than the cargo containers, you may want to tweak some settings.
There is a cool as mod, called builder filler used in conjunction with the projector/blueprint mod,
if you hate the rolling of your ship you can put on a gyroscope and toggle override it will lock your current pitch and yaw
I tried that .. it doesn't work
@@SkyeStorme if it doesn't work you'll need to override more gyroscopes the more you override the more rigid the ship becomes
*assuming all gyroscopes are facing the same direction
Makes sure your gyros are all facing the same way, and make sure you have enough gyros. The more mass your ship has, the more gyros it needs. That includes the mass in storage.
I was thinking, is it possible to make auto-leveling gyros without scripts? Does the event controller or such allow it, or does it require scripting?

Once you’ve got the general floor pattern right, add welders to the end of your rotating tunnel borers with a projector on it. As the borers move up, they’ll copy the pattern upwards. Saving lots of manual welding time.
Yes indeed Skye, I totally agree, after all any new inspiring overlord of the known universe worth his salt does indeed need a suitably sized home base to park his battlefleet.
Well, welding ships have some utilities for example: if you put a hinge in front of it, and then put the welders, you can change the angle of welding, to floor, front and ceiling.
just so funny seeing the welding ship fall off the coupling that first time
For the welder ship you could add some cameras near to the the welders so you can see. Plus more thrusters so it can carry more :P
I recommend a Hangar Door mod so you can get your gates taller than 4 blocks and a Piston mod might save you some time extending those drills ;)
Psst, have you seen the Space Engineers 2 Official Teaser Trailer? If so, what did you think of it?
I'd suggest having the welders on hinges and switch the cockpit to a industrial one, as it would give more vision within the cockpit.
For welding floors maybe even a welding rover with wheels would be better? It would always be at the perfect height, less fuss, no hud issues, more welders, more weigh/storage.
Dint move your welders around.. ... its space.... fly upside down...👍
It's a planet. Not feasible. But good to start thinking in three dimensions.
@dageekgamer4685 lol TV space drives me up the wall .... 👍👍 you cant invert? ... shame
@lordveteran9126 You can invert. Even on a planet. The extra weight you'd need for more atmosphere thrusters makes it not worth it.
If you keep using the ship to drill out, you need a programmable block with the auto level script. Or use large grip drills and pistons to do it.
I'm not :)
Use hinges. You can angle the welders 180 degrees and weld the floor, ceiling, and anything in between.
Hinges can allow you to tilt the welders up or down at any time for better control
with the welding ship, perhaps make some wheels add to the ship, and design the ship for maxium up thrust with lots of cargo? maybe a few rows of welders so you can move faster?
Getting a balance of weight placement vs thrust power takes a while, adding gyros and locking them to keep you stable is also a trick you could use. in this game every extra 10 ships you build you look back at the ships prior and go .. what was i thinking. You are doing great though keep up the good work!
watching you fly and hearing you bash my most favorite kind of ship (welder ship)is super frustrating to me, hahaha
but you're new to the game you'll get better at flying, and you'll learn the importance of a welding ship one you start building a big grid ship :P
when you build your welder ship make it so there's equal trust in all directions so you can fly upside down or pointing straight down without any effort
hinged drills versus rotor drills will make nice corners/square tunnels
You can double down on the welders and have a second row of 7 behind the first. That might be able to go faster as the welders would overlap a bit and you would not have to start and stop so much. Then you need more thrusters, cargo, gyros... Then the welding ship would be as big as the entire floor.. :)
For the tunnel, why not make a welding rover? that way you don't have to mess with the gap between the block and the welder, ship roll and pitch, etc. You can do fine adjustments with ride height.
Welding ships are 100% situational,😂 but you can make them fit the situation. but I gotta say they’re always worth great content😅
Putting those welders on hinges so you can switch between welding in front of you versus below you would make life easier for you. You probably also want to start putting downward pointing thrust just in case you get flipped (plus would enable AI flight if you ever got into that)
try a eventcontroller on ur ships ... This allows you to automate your docking/undocking (switching the battery, etc.)
You can hold the LMB to start the welders/grinders/drills and then press i to open ship inventory, then you can release LMB and get out of inventory, and the welder/drill/grinder will keep working as if you were still pressing the LMB.
Welding ship is like any technology, just because you can use a thing, doesn't mean its practical to do so :)
One thing I noticed was when you were flying left/right, the welding seemed to be more reliable and so I am wondering if you need welder depth and not just width so that you can speed along faster (if you want to pursue it for other projects).
I was also pondering whether, as part of your go big or go home philosophy, whether a massive landing pad that connects to the top of the shafts where huge freighters could dock might be an interesting project...
Good day,
I find that for mining and welding ships, 1 or 2 drills/welders can match up with medium cargos, but once you move to more Mass (weight) starts becoming an issue.
If you flip your ship, you can use the gyro override to flip it back the right way up.
what might improve Weldship opperation, ive seen people put in Cameras for reverse doking, so I bet you can position a camera underneath so you can see the floor and welders from the Cam Persective underneath the ship.
You could use hinges on your welders to point them straight down to do the floor
If your ship welders were on the end of hinges you could orient them to weld up floor or ceiling blocks but keeping the ship level
Question & Suggestion from a non-player so feel free to correct or ignore.
Are there wheels to maybe make a welding car?
Because then you might not have to worry about being too high.
And you can make it taller as you need to for when you do roofs or wider when you do walls.
Yes there are :)
And you can do a car that whelds the floor, just addust the wheel hight offset
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks for watching
Maybe... A welding ship where the Welders fold down from the sides? It would be semi collapsible then. But it would mean the welders also need to be pure toggle on and off. Not that it's that much trouble so you don't have to hold down the button. And landing gears would help the ship sit flat if they're placed front and back.
"everything needs to be bigger" -- every space engineers dedicated server admin, right before they setup their dedicated server.
The battle between Welding Ship-lovers and haters has begun.
