  • Sorry for the water drops on the GoPro... Heading to Martha's Vineyard, very heavy chop after we exit the canal headed toward Wood's Hole. The perspective is hard to see because of the fisheye lens on the GoPro. Most of Buzzards Bay was about 3 foot seas, but in patches off of Falmouth there were consistent 6 feet waves.

Six foot seas, I saw two waves that were maybe that. Heavy chop? I would say medium chop. Windy, yes. That Boston Whaler has an amazing chime on it. The bow behaved impressively. Obviously no Seakeeper and I would have taken a different attitude into the waves (some of the time to starboard) however it looks like that Whaler did fantastic in less than optimal conditions.

How does the 315 ride? It looks pretty smooth in the video. Also do you recall how fast you were going? Im seriously looking at a 315 for our next boat.

It is just very solid. It sort of feels like a brick or something compared to some of the other boats I’ve been on about the same size. Also, super versatile. I can get fish blood all over the deck with my son on one day and have my daughter and her friends all comfortable going to the beach the next. I don’t know exactly how fast I was going… I’m probably averaging about 15mph. If I went any faster people would have been hitting the ceiling. In normal water I cruise at about 30. I think I was borderline on and off plane to deal with the waves.

You're right. That was quite a ride! Where was this? What time of year?

That is lovely Buzzards Bay in July heading southwest shortly after exiting the Cape Cod Canal. I prepaid for a damn slip in Martha’s Vineyard… so I just wanted to get there lol.

Years ago I was transiting the canal on my way to Newport and when I came out of the canal there were 15 footers coming right up the bay at us. Luckily they had a long period, but I could see other sailboats around us almost getting their whole hulls out of the water as they crested. It was quite a ride. One of the women onboard wanted me to turn back, but there was no way I was going to chance getting hit broadside. After leaving the entrance area, we fell off the wind and popped the sails and had a great sail.

You may want to secure those bow lines before they wind up in your screws!

I have 25ft lines on a 31ft boat - they can’t actually reach. They do look rather dumb flapping around like that though.
