  • Inspired by the live recordings of the Beatles, Grammy winning engineer Francis Buckley sets out to track a live band in full without overdubs, showing students at the Musicians Institute that this technique can greatly add character to recordings.
"Playing a wrong note is inconsequential, playing without passion is unforgivable" - Beethoven
Francis uses an entire suite of RØDE's newest studio mics, including the RØDE NTR, M5 Matched Pair and NT1, explaining the best placement for each across various instruments.

    1:25 Microphone Choice
    6:52 Microphone Placement

I've always thought it was funny how in the studio, every one is a perfectionist on their little tracks. But yet we all love those old live records .

More rugged than an SM58? I call BS. I saw a UA-cam video where someone dunked an SM58 in water and then shot it with a shotgun and it still worked fine. How much more rugged can a mic be?

Was that an SM58 or Keith Richards?

Nice to see so many ribbons on a session! I crave All- Ribbon sessions so that condensers won't compete in the high-freq-range, especially on the brightest things in the room, cymbals and HHats.
Did you make efforts to avoid masking in those ranges by down-eq'ing the condensers?
I did notice that some Rode condensers didn't seem overly bright in other demo recordings, that's nice as so many condensers are just loaded with "ear-candy" which gets old pretty quick.

Great video thanks!! would it ever be possible to record a singing drummer live? too much drum bleed? thanks

Hey there- it would absolutely be possible to record a singing drummer live. To reduce bleed, a lot of drummers will reduce the gain and position a mic closer to their mouth. However, some bleed may still come through- it really depends on a few different factors.

Anyone knows how the others are able to hear the singer in this setup? I see that they aren't wearing in-ears or headphones.

Its funny that they always talk about the mics and mic placement in these videos but never talk about the mic preamps that is really helping these mics shine. It can be rodes. Neumann, Shure, AKG, Sennheisers. and other brand as well as a Dynamic, Condenser or ribbon. That Mic preamp is what those mics are running through. If a person uses a crappy mic and good preamp the sound will be ok. If they use a great mic and a crappy preamp the sound will sound crappy. But great mics with great preamps is what is mixed on number hit albums.

Your videos are good but there is need for better production and cohesion of your sequences. Plus the lighting is no that good and i have seen some awkward shots which could be avoided.
