Here is the rest of the quote from President Nelson for more context:
“Too many people consider repentance as punishment-something to be avoided except in the most serious circumstances. But this feeling of being penalized is engendered by Satan. He tries to block us from looking to Jesus Christ, who stands with open arms, hoping and willing to heal, forgive, cleanse, strengthen, purify, and sanctify us.
The word for repentance in the Greek New Testament is metanoeo. The prefix meta- means “change.” The suffix -noeo is related to Greek words that mean “mind,” “knowledge,” “spirit,” and “breath.”
Thus, when Jesus asks you and me to “repent,” He is inviting us to change our mind, our knowledge, our spirit-even the way we breathe. He is asking us to change the way we love, think, serve, spend our time, treat our wives, teach our children, and even care for our bodies.
Nothing is more liberating, more ennobling, or more crucial to our individual progression than is a regular, daily focus on repentance. Repentance is not an event; it is a process. It is the key to happiness and peace of mind. When coupled with faith, repentance opens our access to the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
Whether you are diligently moving along the covenant path, have slipped or stepped from the covenant path, or can’t even see the path from where you are now, I plead with you to repent. Experience the strengthening power of daily repentance-of doing and being a little better each day.
When we choose to repent, we choose to change! We allow the Savior to transform us into the best version of ourselves. We choose to grow spiritually and receive joy-the joy of redemption in Him. When we choose to repent, we choose to become more like Jesus Christ.”

Even if I’m wrong and the LDS faith is the “one true church”, I want nothing to do with it. Send me to outer darkness. It’s just another religion run by 90 year old men who are guessing just like all of us. If it’s run by an all knowing god, he’s asleep at the wheel.

IMO, a reason for the epidemic of needing love is how language is used in the church regarding repentance, sin, justice, judgment, being worthy, etc.
For me, asking God for forgiveness begs the question as to why God is offended in the first place. It has been a powerful question for myself. Do my sins make God less dignified? Is he offended by my offenses. Could an ounce of my rage decrease God’s glory; power, or goodness. To suggest that God is offended by any spectrum of sin, in the context of the eternal, sounds petty. Like a father getting angry at a baby. To be offended and desire retribution to his children to satisfy what? Justice? Whatever that means. To threaten Hell (or anything less than the top tiered Celestial glory) because of all the ways our agency has been compromised by mortality’s grayness?
The recent general conference talk by Pres. Nelson (Thinking Celestial) used language of God being offended. I do not argue that the language may help some. However I argue that for some like myself, it does not speak of peace or a God of an eternal perspective. Instead it evokes the wrath and sovereignty that many Protestants and Calvinists preach, which have been stated by modern theologians to be a form of child abuse. To use fear and God’s disappointment/offense/retribution as the impetus for righteousness. Means justifying ends.
I believe that until the church can flood its language with love from a God found in powerful parts of restoration scripture and teachings, you’ll find more people leave the church, not because of some innate wickedness, but because God’s love will be found elsewhere, leaving the seeker feeling betrayed by a faith tradition that struggles to effectively share the Good News. Not just good news to those who believe they deserve it.
Heaven knows there are plenty of righteous who are burdened with the gospel of depressing news to suggest that God may actually be disappointed in their mistakes and offenses.

I'm sorry you had bad experiences. What those people did, from what you're saying and what I know, doesn't follow what our church believes and what the majority of us do.
Repentance is a gift, and to quote somewhat scripture: the sins, though red as blood, will become as white as wool. And we believe God will forgive anyone who asks. Keep in mind that you'll still receive consequences for your actions.

      @Knetknight19 2 місяці тому

@@billybobjoeyo I advise you to look into the church standards of church court and the processes that are involved. They are not just issues with the people or a bad experience. @Knetknight19 I don't know what you did. I do know that consequences come with actions, and usually, they match. I don't know about your case, but I’m guessing what you did wasn't good.
But we do believe in repentance. It is important, taught many times a year. 4th article of faith, and listed in many scriptures and talks.
Tithing is optional, highly recommended but optional, and it provides blessings. The church uses it for humanitarian aid, charity, bishop storehouses, service, buildings, and what goes inside them.

@@billybobjoeyo I’m also in the church, but unfortunately most can’t see what I’m saying while they are in it. We talk about ordinances and talk ABOUT Jesus. Unfortunately very very few actually know Jesus because they haven’t actually received the baptism of the Holy Ghost. The vast majority assume they received “the gift” at eight years old or the “endowment from on high” when they went to the temple.
They are wrong on both counts. Those are outward ordinances that point to the real Acts 2 / 2 Nephi 31-32 / Mosiah 4-5 baptism of Jesus Christ by fire and the Holy Ghost.
The “covenant path” is a rebranded form of works based salvation that relies on our hamster wheel efforts. We are taught a different gospel than the one found in the Book of Mormon, our founding document.
