    Before I watched this video, I watched PS Audio's video about soundstage. In that video Paul described what a soundstage is, and I thought to myself, well, I think I've never heard the things he described, maybe because I only have a pair of cheap Edifier bookshelf, sitting on my computer table, right against the wall.
    Then I search for speaker placement video tutorial and I found this. So I moved my speakers away from the wall and built a pair of simple speaker stands made from wood to rise the speaker to ear level. I was amazed by the result. Although the speakers are around 20 cm in front of the monitor, I can hear your voice in this video right on the monitor screen, behind the speakers. Music also sounds awesome. Finally I can hear what Paul described as soundstage.
    And just like you said, the bass response is much more even compared to when the speakers are close to the wall. Great video. Thanks a lot

    Informative video. Unfortunately, severe space limitations in my apartment prevent placement of my Kanto TUKs more than 9 inches from the wall. Same issue for my SVS SB-2000 subwoofer, which is on the floor to the right of my TUKs. Ironically, floor space is part of my reason for acquiring these specific units. Fortunately, imaging is pretty good and everything else can be electronically compensated for. The AMT tweeters are at roughly ear-level.

    Great general tips in an easy to digest delivery. I'll add after doing tons of research and training on this subject a few other tips.. Bass traps in the corners of the room can help a lot for tightening up the sound. London traps all around the listening area can help with early reflections. This is especially important between the listener and the speakers. To further tweak eq settings you can get a measurement mic and software. IK Multimedia has a nice system for this.

    Great video with lots of useful tips, just like to add one more tip that could be a factor, and that is how level speakers are in pointing towards the listener, after watching this video I decided to check different aspects as mentioned, but then I checked the level of both speakers only to find one speaker was pointing slightly lower down towards the floor than the other one ! Hardly noticeable visually but a small difference at the speaker is multiplied several times by the time the soundwave reaches the listener ! I have noticed with my Q Acoustics 3050i speakers (Floor standers) that if I sit a few inches lower in the seat bass response is much higher, but if I sit normally the bass is less pronounced !
    Unfortunately I don't have enough space in my living room to move things around, so limited in what I can do, but then I would say not too many people have the freedom to do most of the recommendations you gave us, but still useful to know this kind of stuff, thanks.

    Keep in mind, that the final height of the speakers is even a bit lower if you lean back comfortably in an armchair or on the sofa instead of just sitting tensely on their front edge, as shown in the video. You don't sit like that for a long time and certainly not while listening to music in a relaxed manner, I don't do it myself and I don't know anyone who does it like that.
    As perfect as that may be, I believe that only very few of us have the real possibility of realizing both our own listening position and the position of the speakers almost in the middle of the room as shown, especially if you don't live alone and others don't always have the right audiophile understanding for it. In real life you will have to make compromises.
    bass response = i've heard it often, especially for subwoofers, that you should place the speakers in the listening position, of course with their front facing the room and with the music turned on, then you should walk slowly around the room in front of the speakers and then finally position them where you can hear the bass most comfortably, at least that's the theory.
    But there should also be speakers where the positioning does not always have to be so strict because they are not so critical in terms of positioning, e.g. speakers with horn tweeters because of thier slightly wider sweetspot or specifically the "Q Acoustics 3030i", as only one example that I know myself.
    Speakers that have a bass reflex opening on the front should also be able to be positioned closer to the wall ... for speakers with such an opening on the back, there are suitable foam inserts to reduce their bass output and the room reflections.
    I'm not an expert, I'm just passing on what I've heard and read on this subject.
    For further detailed informations I recommend for instance = "Loudspeaker placement short" by "The Hans Beekhuyzen Channel" or "Hifi Myths & Misconceptions - Placing Speakers Close To Walls" + "Hifi Myths & Misconceptions - Speaker Setup" both made by "A British Audiophile".

    I was thinking about "away from the wall" some home theater speakers have hook hole at the back so you can hook them on the wall. How can we solve this?

    • @KantoSolutions
      @KantoSolutions  Рік тому

      If they were designed to be hung on a wall, the speaker manufacturer likely (hopefully) designed them with a dip in bass response so that it would sound neutral with the boundary reinforcement introduced by being so close to a wall or corner.

    • @lisar3944
      @lisar3944 3 роки тому +18

      yup. I have a single room apartment, and having my speakers 5 feet from the wall in this place is completely laughable.
      One thing I've read is that "away from the wall" is tricky - if you can't pull them way out, putting them 5-60 cm from the wall is preferable as there's a really bad effect if you put them more than 60 cm but less than...quite far away (5 feet? no idea how far you have to go if you blow past 60 cm).
      And there's more, of course. So many rules. So unlikely most of us can follow them as we don't have an extra room dedicated to listening, and honestly I would never want that anyway - I want to listen to music while I work, hang out, whatever. I'd really like to see a presentation of "speaker placements you can actually live with" or similar.

      @@lisar3944 That's one thing you never see in these videos, i.e., real world speaker placement. And rarely does anyone have all their furniture lined up against the wall throughout a room, with one chair placed in the middle. Rooms are for living and interacting with others in, not to sit by yourself in the middle of a room.

      Physics doesn't care. If you want to get the most out of your speakers, then they need to placed away from the wall. No worries if you can't. You just won't get the best performance out of them, no matter how 𝙞𝙢𝙥𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 it is.

  • @svp2864
    @svp2864 Рік тому +1

    Great video but speaker height with tweeters at ear level is not how most front speakers work for home theatre setup. Most popular floor standing speakers have tweeters anywhere between 33 through 38" height from the floor. And nobody ever lifts floor standing speakers to bump tweeters up to ear level - Polk XT60 has it at around 33", Klipsch R-620F has twitter at around 37", Sony SS-CS3 at around 33". And people aren't replacing sofas if they end up having twitters significantly higher than their ear levels. If nobody cares about tweeter height for floor standing speakers, why is it so important to put bookshelf speakers precisely at an ear level? Most bookshelf speakers are shorter versions of floor standing models utilising exactly the same woofers and twitters.

    • @KantoSolutions
      @KantoSolutions  Рік тому +3

      It's not critical to line speakers up perfectly with your ears, you just need to be close. Most speakers disperse sound accurately within 10 degrees vertically with no roll-off. At normal listening distances, like 6' to 8' away, this gives you about 1' to 1.5' of leeway. That means a floor-standing speaker with a tweeter positioned 28" off the floor will likely sound the same as one 40" off the floor.

  • @proteusblack8913
    @proteusblack8913 2 роки тому +3

    Nope. Further I bring my bookshelf speakers out from the front wall the worse it sounds. They lose dynamics and all I hear is blaring mid-range coming from the cones. The theory is that they should be omni-directional and the frequencies should bounce off the room walls in such a symmetrical way as to make the speakers "disappear". This doesn't happen for me at any measured distance in the room. I've used about 10 different approaches to this from numerous articles and videos and they've all ended up exactly the same. My speakers have rear ports and they get their body and dynamics from being 6 - 12 inches from the front wall where it distributes its sound off of it. Otherwise like I said, it's all just mid-range blaring strait from the cones. These videos rarely ever take into account the speaker type, room type, or anything else. They all require that you have a deep length symmetrical rectangular perfectly closed off space used for nothing else but listening in the very center.

    I wouldn't worry about the speaker placement in this room as it sounds terrible acoustically. I would address the room acoustics first for sure! These ideals of 1/3rd room distance from the wall is simply impractical in most apartments much like the seating. These are small speakers after all so the whole concept seems ultra crazy and impractical. Obviously this is for someone who is definately NOT married or doesn't have kids! Trailing cables, wasted space and sheer impracticality. The even bigger joke is that the TUK link, photos and advertising materials show the speakers virtually up against the rear wall and in no scenario like this at all! Go figure. Finally you never really got around to discussing minimum width placement properly or measurements for placement from the wall on the sides?
