@Som Tmith - on the contrary, this part of the story precedes the original story by Reverend Awdry by 20 years to 1923. Many of those stories covers from 1940's to the present day. Alfred was one railway engine character considered by the Thin Clergyman but was only mentioned in outline and not in great detail. Crovan was his lackey and was misguided by Alfred. There's a great tale elsewhere in these various stories told of how Flying Scotsman straightened out Crovan , and finally redeemed himself. Leaving behind the negative influences of Alfred - once and for all! Helped by Spencer and Gordon. If you doubt it. Check the story out yourself! It's there and available to be seen.

I have always wondered what happened to that truck after Alfred's death. Did he tell Sir Topham Hatt what he saw--or anyone at all, for that matter? How did he cope with the knowledge that he watched someone fall into insanity moments before their death? Did his encounter with Alfred leave any lasting impact on his character (e. g. set him on the path to becoming more mature and compassionate than his fellow trucks)?
I don't expect to ever get any answers, but given how much Alfred and his actions affected Henry, Gordon, and Crovan in other stories by t1e2h3, I don't think it's far-fetched to believe that they affected this truck as well

i think losing out to the numbers 3 & 4 to Gordon and Henry as well as facing being sent back to the mainland for possible scraping must have affected Alfred's mental state and ending up having a mental breakdown must have sent him into a rage which the Fat Controller did not know about.

    • @nicholetheotter1957
      @nicholetheotter1957 7 років тому +20

I do agree that Alfred's meltdown was fuelled by his grudge towards Gordon and Henry because if you go back to Episode 3, Alfred was being extremely confident that he'd be picked for the NWR #3 to the point he had a number 3 painted on his cab.
Both he and 87546 aka Crovan viewed Henry as a failure due to his unique but awkward design leaving him crippled with problems. It completely justifies why Alfred was so pissed when he found out the #3 was given to Henry instead of him.
The Fat Controller promised Alfred and 87546 would be given the next numbers, but only if they were good, which they were certainly not. Then Gordon enters the picture and impresses the Fat Controller with his ability to reach a top speed of 100m per hour. The Fat Controller knew how beneficial it would be to the Express, leading him to give Gordon the NWR #4 spot.
Alfred, who thought he was going to be #4, was even more pissed than when Henry was chosen over him for the #3. Alfred was horrified that Gordon "disgraced" the LNER by repainting his LNER livery with the same blue colour as Thomas and Edward.
Alfred's grudge got the better of him, with his plan failing due to a signalman seeing Gordon and Henry in trouble, causing Alfred to be redirected and thus resulting in his demise.

This must be the longest episode of _NWR Origins_ you've ever made.
I figured that Alfred's soliloquy would fit Forte's before his descent into madness... Give him a little more Tim Curry. Need I say his doom was very well portrayed?
Plus, I never expected him to become a specter. I've had ideas of using him in one of my own future _Sudrian Ghost Stories_.
I've always known that 87546 would be Crovan. And I have a feeling that he'll be bumping heads--or buffers--with an equally pompous private engine: Spencer. Love to play him again soon.

Quite a pretty dark story with the end of Alfred/98462, but in so many ways, it's quite epic. Pretty out of character for the trucks to make him see sense, as you would have thought they'd be mocking the situation he was in when he rants about Gordon and Henry taking away the numbers he felt he deserved. As for Alfred, his attitude and actions prior to his destruction was like the combination of Scar, Forte, and Frollo. The music choices were great, including the usage of Star Wars music. I've seen some use music from the Pokémon anime series, so that's cool. Really enjoyed how the backstory covered events in Edward & Gordon, The Sad Story of Henry, and Edward, Gordon & Henry, and even the first half of Thomas & Gordon. Just epic.

That was...the most gruesome end for an engine I've ever seen. I mean, when Alfred did it in "The Dark Times", at least Thomas and Edward were still roughly in one piece, just de-anthropomorphocized. Alfred...he was obliterated. Sure, a few parts may have survived intact to be used as spares for the other engines, but the rest was...*shudders*

The combination of this with original stories makes this a great episode on its own right. Then you added this whole thing with Alfred, and turned it into a masterpiece. Not a huge TTTE fan, but I love the writing and voice acting of this one - Alfred especially. His VA did a very good job. I also really liked that Gordon decided to be the bigger man (engine?) and back off rather than escalate it - it reinforces the whole dignified nature of his personality.

The only issue I have is that you said Eagle went back to the heritage railway. Thing is those didn't exist until the 1950s and 1960s, the latter being when Standard gauge heritage railways started forming. Had you left out heritage, it would've been fine. All the same, this is a good episode. Alfred's failed murder sure does show how anger can affect somebody.

This is my favourite episode for so many reasons. Such as the big character development for Gordon and Henry. Darthwill3 gave his best performance as Alfred (I especially love it when he was charging at Gordon and Henry and laughing evilly). That Alfred death scene was unexpected, but it was a interesting twist on Awdry’s original explanations. I also love of how the story tied into the explanations as well, e.g. saying that 98462 and 87546 were sent away for being nasty and rude. It was also interesting seeing what happened to the other engines such as Eagle too (though I would personally change heritage railway to something else, as heritage railways didn’t exist until the 1950s). That ghost at the end was also a surprise as well.

It was one day since Gordon arrived and was officially inducted into the NWR, but it was still bad feelings for one engine, 98462 aka Alfred. Ever since the engine, who was punished with his name being revoked and having his LNER heritage eliminated, had grown a grudge against two engines.
First, it all started when Alfred arrived on Sodor on trial with his minion 87546 and Henry, the engine he looked down upon for his imperfections who had the NWR #3 position given to him after managing to defy his illness to successfully push a train headed by the embarrassed 87546. Alfred never lived it down, because he thought he was going to be the choice for the #3 and seeing Henry be given the number he wanted so badly was forever going to scar him.
Then we got to when Gordon, the slightly modified A1 Pacific ordered by the Fat Controller for pulling the NWR's Express train, managed to reach 100 miles per hour. Gordon had initial respect for Alfred due to both being LNER engine classes, but then when Gordon was given the NWR #4 and was repainted in his new blue livery, Alfred got disgusted with him and the two developed a bitter rivalry. After being looked over for the #3 position, Alfred thought he would be given the #4, but the Fat Controller said he'd only induct engines who behave which Alfred was certainly not.
While he was alone with some trucks, Alfred descended into a mental breakdown over his grudge on both Gordon and Henry and them taking the numbers he wanted. Alfred attempted to kill the two engines by pushing a long train of fuel tankers, but a signalman noticed Gordon and Henry were in trouble, and so caused Alfred to re-route to his demise.
Ever since the loss of Alfred, the No. 98462, things had changed for Gordon and Henry. The two engines became firm friends, aiming to look out for each other. They had occasionally teased each other, and in 1935 Gordon had become jealous of Henry after the green engine was fitted with a new shape following a horrible accident he suffered that winter. Despite the occasional fallouts, Gordon and Henry's friendship stayed strong and it still stays strong to this day.

Alfred = Taking over the railway for his own good and for the LNER's good as well to be bigger than the larger and rival LMS.
Timothy = Demonic and crazy but trying to warn Thomas of what might happen to him.
Diesel 10 = Destroying all steam for diesel usage on the island of Sodor.

No offence, but I thought you chose the easy way out with their fates, albeit Neil's was a bit more in-depth with previous episode, but with Adam and Wallace it could've been a case of open interpretation, you know, for a bit of a mystery factor :)

It's 85746 in the background, not 98462. All of Alfred's ghost appearances thus far have him wearing LNER green, and he doesn't have the frame-mounted headlights that 85746 does on his Trainz model - you can clearly see those on the engine's body in that shot. In reality it wouldn't be that big of a deal to mount them, but this is a Trainz model that you can't edit very easily if at all.
