Strasburg Rail Road #90 modern freight 4-5-2021

GoPro ride along as Strasburg's Ex-Great western #90 works hard to move nine modern freight cars from Lehman Place to their yards at Strasburg. Total weight of the consist was 1,200 tons and 522 feet in length.

I have a copy of the record "Highball" that featured #90 back when she still hauled sugar beets on the Great Western. She still sounds fantastic!

@@dieselteen0770 the stack talk is when the steam locomotive talks to you, the smoke exiting the funnel makes a loud sound

Wow running her hard; they barely ever get that kind of workout pulling fan trips at a snail's pace. Sounds fantastic! Getting some wheel slip trying to get her up to speed with a load. Great to hear, thx!

Really cool video. I come from a railroad family. Both great grandfathers my grandfather uncles and one cousin all worked for the southern railroad in Va. My granddad was a fireman on the steam locomotives and worked his way up to engineer.

Are modern freight cars way heavier than in, like, 1930? I saw an old pic of 475 dragging 30 cars up Christiansburg hill, but struggles with 8 in Strasburg

Yes, they are heavier. One modern loaded freight car is equal to roughly three cars of 1920's vintage. Strasburg doesn't like to push 100 year old locomotives to their limits.
