Matts Garage: Mercedes W123 steering lock removed without the key

- If you have the key, removing the steering lock and ignition barrel from a Mercedes W123 is easy. If you don't have the key it can only be done the hard way. This time I cut the old lock out and freed the steering wheel at last!

Why is it that car thieves can do this sort of thing in a matter of seconds, but it takes the rightful owner literally forever? Life really isn't fair sometimes.
Rightful owners care about what they're breaking. Car thieves dont and will gladly kick and beat things into submission with no regards for surrounding components.
someone just tried to steal my 300d and totally cut the wiring harness, screwed up my ignition with a random key, luckily they had no idea how to hotwire a diesel but unluckily they destroyed a million things in the process
Recently was given a 240 D without keys, was earmarked for the shredder but I saved it, I will have to do this soon so I can at least steer it
thanks
Thanks
Where can i find 230E keys if i lost them
What type of blade did you use to cut it? Carbide tip?
This is an invaluable video Matt, I will soon be recreating your fun on an 280e that's not seen the light of day since about 2001 as far as I can figure out.... I don't have any keys for it, but you've saved me a great deal of pain by figuring all this out before hand!
Hi Rob,really please this has been useful, and yes, pain is exactly the right word! Before you start battling, try Mercedes with the VIN as if it has the original locks they will have the key code on file (not many manufacturers do that!) but get the key cut by a local auto locksmith for £10 as the Merc dealer wanted £200 for that, which I thought was steep for a flat bit of metal
@@furiousdriving That would be an option, however, it's on German plates (but in the UK) and was never registered here, so I have zero docs to take to the dealer!
Shame, you do need a V5 for that. Where did you find it?
In a garage all tucked up having been brought over to the UK by someone in the forces circa 2001.....
I was also told that if I take the drivers door lock to a locksmith, they will cut a key for it
That’s correct, there’s a key number on the lock barrel. On this car the lock had been destroyed (and turned out to have had the ignition barrel changed as well)
If you were drill out the lock wafers you can uses anything to turn the ignition cylinder, you can uses a screw driver to unlock it.
What is a lock wafer? I have to replace my ignition barrel without a key. Any help would be appreciated!
links/pictures would help a tonne.
Typical w123, literally indestructible, the Nokia brick of cars
A work mate of mine dropped his Nokia in the road and a dust cart (refuse truck) drove over it. Didnt even crack the screen. This is the car of that!
Confusing video, and i watched in frustration as he destoyed a piece of history. And at the end I didnt even understand what he said about the easy way. This is what happens when it is cold outside, pain takes over

We had one with 1.6 million km
Wow! Thats incredible! This one is brand new at 135,000 miles/220,000 km compared to that - I hope I can get this going and give it a shot at those kind of miles
furiousdriving Just do some work on the body to avoid rust, even tho it could be little bit expensive the car can last your lifetime trust me
Once its running Ill get onto that, the British weather isn't very kind to cars but the steel on these feels like a tank! This one spent the last 15 years indoors so that has saved a lot of corrosion.
furiousdriving I wish you best of luck, keep us updated. I wish to buy one and throw om606 into it
You know you didn’t have to cut anything right
If you know another way Im all ears
Just drill out the lock wafers.
