What did Antrius forget to include in his plan?
Thank you to Wizards of the Coast for sponsoring this episode! You can explore a new magical world and plan your own battles with the new Dragons of Stormwreck Isle D&D starter set! Check it out here: bit.ly/DSStormwreck
He forgot to factor in that the enemy isn't frozen in time while he is planning for what he gleaned about so long ago that his intel is wrong now... like the fact that the bad guys have found his party while they were discussing the plan... and that Nix tossing in a fireball while the rest just winged it would have been a far better plan. I mean, controlling a forest fire is really easy for adventurers that can cleave down any tree in a single blow and ignore most normal fire DoT while carrying such flaming timber. Also, most fireballs cast from a level 5 or higher magic user turns most trees into instant ash.
Did I go over the top in AD&D Nerd? I can never tell.
Antrius definitely forgot about the "Seduce the Dungeon Master." If you can't win the game, you could game the guy who run the game.
He forgot to include a lot of things in his plan. But, mostly, he forgot that planning takes time, and time was something they obviously didn't have. That's why my party has a number of basic battle strategies in place for surprise encounters. Each strategy is an outline for dealing with certain general scenarios, and the specifics can be adapted on the fly for various circumstances. In this instance, the best choice would have been to retreat, while throwing obstacles in front of the slower moving undead, with the wizard focused on countering any magic attempted by the lich. Then, run to the town, arm those capable of fighting to act as backup, and have the rest evacuate. If there is time, makeshift defenses can be placed, but they're not strictly necessary. This party has been together long enough to know each other's strengths and weaknesses. Mistakes like this one should not be happening.
At one point, Evandra pretends to join the Lich, only to double cross him and punch him in the face!
It's funny, because she specifically dumped Charisma 🤣
Just ask him to join the party
Wait.. Nixie learned there's a situation where she should _not_ cast Fireball? Inconceivable!
She must've hit a feet\stat bump level and added some INT. LOL
And that's on character development folks!
"You keep using that word...";)
To be fair she is still learning. Otherwise she wouldn’t have had to be reminded. Baby steps.
That is exponential character growth.
"We're outgunned, outmanned
outnumbered, outplanned!
We gotta make an all out stand!"
You go, Evandra!
Also: "If the trees are thin let the flames begin, but if the trees are packed tight do not ignite." 🤣🤣🤣👌
but not outclassed
@@thodan467 never that xD
I'm pretty sure the last is kind of scout lullabies done for camping in forest
Hamilton
And outside.
- We need a plan of attack.
- I have a plan. "Attack!"
"Is that always your plan, Mr. Stark?"
Yes. Yes it is. Until that's impossible, that it is.
Plan A: Smack anything that's not a Party member.
Plan B: Repeat Plan A.
Welcome to Barbarian Strategy 101.
@@SH-qs7ee - Barbarian, it's your turn, what do you do?
- AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!
- Raging, got it.
(XP to Lvl 3)
@@SH-qs7ee I'm a paladin, and I 100% agree with this plan. Needs to have more Thunderous Smite in it, though.
2:06 the moment when the Lich said to just fight him I imagined it was the DM coming back to the table with snacks and soda begging them to just start the fight
"We're outnumbered, outmanned..."
"And outside!"
God I missed this show, great job as always everyone!
Outside means fireball is okay, right?
@@Kineth1 only if the trees are thin can the flames begin. if the trees are packed tight, do not ignite.
Antrius made a classic mistake: he forgot to include "Genre Savvy Villain" to his list of initial conditions.
More Heroes die to Unexpected Cliche Reversal (UCR) than one might think.
Also he forgot the metagaming DM who knows everything the players know.
@@schwarzerritter5724 and as the lich said he forgot to seduce
@@schwarzerritter5724 Preposterous, the DM is your friend.
Also, there more parts a plan have, the likelier is it to fail. Antrius made it super complicated and during all time as a DM and PC (I started playing 1984) I never seen a plan with more then 5 steps succeed, not in any game. Try to avoid plans with more then 3 steps, you can go to 5 in games like Shadowrun where the players have modern communications and tend to spend far longer time studying, and often have access to blueprints of the area beforehand to help but that is it.
You don't need a meta gaming DM to TPK when you complicate things too much. A plan like:
1. Go back to town and fetch a cleric.
2. Have the cleric turn the zombies.
3. Hit the lich with everything you got while the zombies are busy running away.
would have a far higher possibility of success.
Or in worst case, go for Nixie's plan. That one would have worked even if the reward would likely burn with the village. XP is it's own reward (and maybe Nixie can get some XP for the villagers too).
When Nixie learns Delayed Blast Fireball she'll be unstoppable
I doubt she has the patience for it ^^
She delayed it..for 1 second
- It's Fireball, isn't it?
- Yes, but I already casted it
lol, but the thought of delaying her fireballs might be too much for her heart to bear.
Just wait until she learns how Sorcery Points and Metamagics work.
truly impressed Antrius was able to get Nixie to hold to the lesson about fire and trees.
also, putting their heads together melted my heart XD
When the players are learning, but so is the DM.
*I love how this is the same epic BBEG they fought at the end of Season 3, but they still don't know his name and just call him the Lich.
That is his name, isn't it? Lich.
"Dumb lich" no less. Reminds me of the Order of the Stick comic where Xykon repeatedly forgets you Roy is. Xykon is so awesome, best villain ever.
Mr lich don't seem like a bad dood he's not a government employee or a banker he shouts a bit but so my kids. You know he ain't heavy he's our brother he gets a bad rap
@@Puschit1 you misspelled "Tarquin".
Holy cow, Antrius is the smart one???
Well, reletively speaking, yes 😂
..In the party, yes.
Except the times when the party had that merfolk (?) cleric.
Hey!
I resent that!
My 10 INT bard was the smartest of the party too!
ну он же гей)
@@WexMajor82 I have so many questions.
My personal head canon: Antrius actually has a decent intelligence stat, but dumped wisdom. Only reason he's able to cast any spells (when he ever bothers to) is sheer dumb luck XD
Nah, Bards use Charisma as their casting stat. Smart enough to plan and yet dumb enough to not expect consequences works just fine.
@@NereidAlbel oh yeah that's right. I thought it was wisdom for some reason lol
Same with Nixie, from the MTG ad.
Nixie canonically has a int stat of 1. She couldn’t be mind controlled by the warlock in season 4.
@@calebleach7988 1?
It has been a while since I saw that one...
But I thought it was below 4 or something like that, and not *actually* 1?
As in the spell would work on anything with more than 4 intelligence and they said it was her dump stat or some such?
I love they have a rhyme for when NOT to use fireball.
"You just should seduce me"
That makes my day 😁
Planning battle just when enemy see you 😂 priceless 😂😂😂
I was so waiting for Nixie to go full Leroy Jenkins. XD
The lich later died due to a std he picked up from that crimeboss.

"LEEROY JENKINS!!!!!!"
I'm a little disappointed that these three are not the main adventuring party in the new Dungeons & Dragons feature film. I certainly hope they at least get a cameo!
The D&D movie couldn't afford the necessary fire insurance if they'd brought Nixie in. Plus they'd have to bail Evandra out of jail seven times and settle at least 16 paternity suits for Antrius.

Also DDE...no plan survives beyond first contact.
@@PaulaLPope Ah, that was Eisenhower? We always used that quote in our Mech Warrior campaign. And it was quite accurate :)
@@RSProduxx It was, indeed! Always accurate...unfortunately. Why even bother planning? lol

Should've done the Monster Mash. It is a graveyard smash after all.
nixie new makeup is so beautiful. thank you for putting all that hard work on her makeup.
Well, we all know plans never, ever, ever, will ever work accordingly to what was planned. Therefore, I follow in the footsteps of a great planner I once saw on TV. And like said planner, I always say, "Make a plan, execute the plan, expect the plan to go off the rails, throw away the plan". Never failed me once
Normally, yes. But 2nd Ed has a Professor Bard kit that's great for Gnome Bards that beg to differ.
Except it's a stupid plan doomed to fail.
Then it will probably succeed.
(That's how it usually goes)
@@chris_croissAnt Yeah... can't argue with that at all.
Captain Cold: Mick...let me do the thinking.
I dunno, I had a plan go to plan once, my Paladin suggested we dressed up to look like a member of a group of bandits and mercenaries which had taken over a town so that when my paladin says a certain word, the rogue stabs the bandit my paladin is talking to in the back. The rogue seemed to love this plan, it notably went very much to plan. Since only our party knew the key phrase and the bandits weren't expecting an attack, we managed to wipe that group before the surprise wore off.
When they were needed the most they returned
Can we all stop and savor how genius the incidental music is? Bravo, Ned McPhie!😊
Who is your costumer? That Lich armor looks awesome! I'd let him raise my bones.

can't help but laugh, I'm definitely guilty of overplanning, and when it gets shot down,, quickly followed up by plan B- pure chaos🤣🤣
I liked Evandra’s plan. Another great video. Thank you.
The opposite happened to our group last weekend. We planned for around half an hour, then chose the craziest, 3 phase plan we could think of. The group in charge of phase 1 rolled so well, and our target rolled so badly, that they ended up killing it via the traps we set as we, in the group for phase 2, just watched in awe lol
Finally got ya'll's dice set in over here in Texas and I love it! Not as big as Texas dice, but they do roll hot baby!!! My Steel Defender Chicken got a couple crits and DM was mortified that his Big Bad got got with a beak to the temple ;)
I’m at work, super stressed out, but a notification from Deerstalker ALWAYS makes things better!❤
2:03 I loved that! The BBEG comes in for a sit down and gives his take on what the players should do? HAHAHAHA!
Not gonna lie I half expected "lure the BBEG in on his own with an elaborate plan meeting" to be step 1 of the *actual* plan all along!
1:18 Admit it : you KNEW this scene would happen... and still enjoyed the cr*p out of it because those characters are THAT likable !!
Ill would love to see Antrius win iniciative and cast Fireball before Trixie just to se how she reacts
"You call that a fireball? _This_ is a fireball!"
She'd either get the hots for him (pun intended) and jump him or she'd try to kill him in a jealous rage. Or, she'd both him.
All that planning, just to roll a 1!
How will our heros get out of this one?
Does this mean more episodes coming soon?
The All For 1 dice set and bag are absolutely beautiful by the way! Love em lots!
Antrius...They're getting closer. You may want to hurry up with the planning!
I miss this so much 😭🥺
In my DND group, this is something thats frustrating but appreciated in big instances, onle literal 1 minute to plan the attack or strategy instead of letting us have enough time to work everything out
The mobs just hanging out in the background is amazing
I agree with the litch at the end, allways try charm first. Have a simple, but effective back up plan. But always try charm first.....lol Great video.
Lich knight down for some fun times with Antrius……Good on him.
Top episode Deerstalker crew, can’t wait to see the next episode and say hi to everyone at PAXAUS.
I´m not sure i like the restrictions on the fireballs, but i do love that you guys have a jingle for them.
Love your work and the characters 💖 they are characters right ?
plot twist they are not the characters and the "players" are the real characters. in other words the "humans" playing as the characters we see are just figments and the characters are the real people.
I missed the part of the plan where they look for the phylactery or the part he realize vicious mockery is useless on zombie and skeleton.
Pro tip: if you take the Lich phylactery, it gives you XP once. If you don’t take it, the Lich can give you XP every year! Reuse, reduce, recycle.
Incorrect; vicious mockery works as long as the target is able to hear you (they don't even need to be able to understand you) and fails a wisdom save. Zombies and skeletons can still hear, or people commanding them wouldn't work. (Source: PHB page 285. No limitations based on creature type; they just have to be able to hear.)
@@troodon1096 Well that's stupid... Skeleton and zombie are more or less puppet. :/ That's like a ventriloquist puppet getting hurt by people laughing at it. :/
@@Pandor25 If that's so, then killing the lich should stop the zombies. But they just keep moving.
@@andrewjohnson6716but they become a problem EVERY year, and probably have many backup plans for this situation, they ARE high level wizards after all.
I love the Lich he's the best person in the video because he gave the most simplest plan
Я уже боюсь плана, который предлагает бард.
this is oddly timed indeed, for our d&d session later tonight our archer already announced that he wants us to do stategy and battleplanning once we are back in town for last weeks messy chaotic and utterly plan-less fight with a bunch of ankhegs..... i expect the planning to devolve into at least a bar brawl, seduction of serveral waiters and a very drunk monk
"New plan, I do exactly the same thing, but I have an axe."
"How is that any different?"
"It's more gruesome that way!"
Me: "Then why aren't you using an axe all the time!?" 😉
Glad to see you guys back feels like you took an extended vacation for awhile.
This was great, loved the little heads together moment!
This is my group .. every time .. every .. every .. time .. like just last week.
You don't even go here!" is the best line!
🤣🤣🤣
Costumes looked amazing and I guess they rolled Nat 1 on the plan
Omg Evandra is even more beautiful with this new hairstyle! ✨
When the BARD has the highest INT in the party 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, and of *course* the plan involved singing...
Great video! Remember- always start all battle briefings with “hold all questions until the end”
Basically every Shadowrun game I've ever played: Plan meticulously; fail fantastically.
😂 this reminds me of an incident from back when I DM'd a campaign. The rogue snuck into the room invisibly and took note of the room and went back out. The group took like 15 minutes deciding on a strategy and proceeded to charge in the room to a fully buffed room of bad guys. Yeah. All that planning on not one of them considered the young dragon in the room saw him. I killed half the party that day.
love nixies plan. Fireball
Well, yeah. She didn't want to just go Fireball-Fireball-Fireball! She just planned: Fireball.
"i didnt ask how big the room is - i said i cast fireball."
XD
Great to have you guys back on the screen! Bravo
That fire was quite beautiful!
"I love it when a plan comes together." - Hannibal Smith
Nixie to the Lich: "Yeah shoo. You don't even go here!" 😅🤣😂
“You don’t even go here” lol
Pure gold!
So good!! I love the throw back to season one^^ Looking forward to the rest of the season
Strangely, my Sunday group managed to kill the king of a realm in 2 rounds in spite of no plan, having discussed nothing, and each going our own ways. My Satyr rogue/fighter (pirate) without discussing his plans sewed a disguise and daggers into a water skin, stripped down and jumped out of a tower window into the sea around the castle, intent on gaining intelligence on the capital city before presenting himself as the new chef to the court. Other members were also doing their own things. The funny thing is that the other rogue snuck into the king's chambers, charmed the FEY king, walked him to the edge of the balcony, sneak attacked him, and forced him over the balcony. All of that damage plus more visited upon him by other party members killed him, allowing another party member to take his crown, and place it upon the head of a female NPC accompanying the party, who we rightfully suspected was the true sovereign. The DM was flabbergasted at how we managed to take what he planned to be a huge battle down to 2 rounds.
After decades of rol-playing, I have come to learn that the best plan is just to go in and make a lot of crits.
May not work always, but it always funny
Strange place says hello! Thank you for the video.
A new Episode! The costumes are on point as always! This looks better than most stuff on TV! I love the main cast as well, that fireball jingle was hilarious!
Just dig a fire break around where Nixie is going to cast Fireball.
Finally a new episode!!
I really hope there is a friendly competition between these guys and Viva le Dirt league. I'm so sick of conflicts that might go nuclear, I want a nice trans-tasman one that won't end the actual world. Both channels have amazing content and show the best of NZ and OZ respectively, so there is no loser, just winners all around.

Antrius getting increasingly more done every time someone interrupts his plan is my spirit animal
Would love a movie with these three in it.
Well I do love an overly complicated plan, but I prefer ruining them so my players end up knowing how I feel 🤣
A few military bits of wisdom for the bard for the next time... if there is a next time...
"No plan survives first contact with the enemy."
"If the enemy knows where you are, don't be there."
"Always roll to seduce first, hack and slash later."

I’d love to see a battle between Kendall’s BBEG vs Sam’s Annadale.
Nixie is my favorite, but the Lich is my 2nd Favorite!
With VLDL in the country for Pax Australia, is there a possible collab?
The fact that the zombies are just waiting in the background kills me
It's a tabletop turn-based game.
But at the end it seems DM had enough of this and ruled "planning" as whole party's turn.
@@cjnf11 yeah i know haha i've been playing for half my life now it's just that seeing the ennemies actually waiting made me laugh
I have to explain this more often than I like.
The plan is to let the blaster do their thing. Everyone else, their role is to stay out of the blast area!!!!! That's it!!! Maybe take out anything that tries to run out of the blast zone. But if you can't cast fireball, priority one for you should be to help those who can cast fireball, cast fireball.
OMG, that punchline!! You slayed me!! 😆
BBEG is right, Antrius should have just tried to seduce him. I'm sure rigor mortis is just starting to kick in so...
Happy to see the Lich get a win
I love it when the PC's try to plan... (evil laughter). Straight up though, if Evandra is packing Glamdring there, which is what it sure looks like, plan 1 is pretty solid.
