It's holiday time so I always like to take a look back at some hot gadgets from when I was a kid. This year we take a look at Lazer Tag - what is arguably the first laser tag gun for consumers. There were others like Photon and Daisy with similar products out around the same time.
I recently acquired a used kit in excellent condition that works great!

Damn this is my childhood right here. Oh the fun memories I had back in those days with Laser Tag and Photon.

I think it's time to stop being 40 and become 10 again one more time. Damn I miss my childhood.

I'm 17 steps ahead of you. I'm 40 and I'm using a lot of the original lazer tag equipment in my web series I'm working on.

I regret getting rid of my lazer tag stuff. We had 4 guns, 4 holsters, 4 monitors, 4 red belts, 2 black chest strap vests, and 2 helmets. We also had the Starbase!!! Coolest thing ever!

I remember opening up a can of whup with my friends when I broke out the white rifle. The built in scope was pretty sweet and being able to fire prone made me more or less "beamproof".

I do remember using a calibration knob up by the scope/sight that would help me shoot accurately but I don't recall any issues with having to compensate for accuracy by aiming off to one side. Usually all that I had to do was get the target in between the two lit up red lines in the scope and fire and it would work. I know the range slider/switch could also affect accuracy. I just might need to pick one of those up again!

For Christmas in 1986 this is all I wanted. Our parents, however, didn't want to spend that kind of money since my sister wasn't really into it and two is kind of the minimum number of units you need to fully enjoy this game. We ended up getting a cheaper knock-off called XSL Phaser Command (by Remco, the same company that made the baby laugh a lot!). It worked just as well except the blasters didn't make sound.
In fact, playing around with an actual Lazer Tag set later in life, I found the XSL had a faster rate of fire whereas Lazer Tag had about a one shot per second delay (probably so it could play its sound effect).
Ah, good times. Thanks for the video, man.

I was one of those kids that got one, and it was fantastic. I remember testing it outside and being able to hit it from a "mile away" (childhood perspective, actual distance probably 100 yards or so) consistantly. I have tried many versions since, and nothing has come close.

Excellent review. As I recall the pistol had a 100 foot range. The rifle had 300 to 500 foot range which depended on the firing mode selected. I think it had a narrow beam (sniper) and a wide beam mode. The rifle also has a stock with adjustable stops to provide a better fit for different people, simulated muzzle flash like the pistols, a "silencer" mode which let you turn off the sound, the same red dot in the sight, plus a shoulder strap that was easy to replace when the plastic clips broke.

Oh man... the memories! Funny, I don't remember the gun's style or color that much, but I remember that chest piece, and how accurately you had to aim. I would even target practice by setting the chest piece up on a mantle or whatnot and practice "downrange".
One of the fondest memories of childhood included this set. Everyone had a lazer tag set and we played capture the flag on my block, the street was the neutral zone and one side of the street was the enemy territory and my side of the street was obviously my team's territory. We played through the night and had tents set up in people's yards (with their permission of course and they even joined in).
I do remember a huge rifle that they made, and it was silver or white or a light color. Then it stopped being popular. I never knew why until the video! I thought that tragedy was a police officer shooting a kid with a plastic AK or a plastic M16... never knew it was the lazer gun.

Nice thatnks for the link! I think at one point between my brother and I we had about 6 pistols, 1 rifle, Helmet, vests etc. Lots of fun with the neibor kids back in the day.

Always wanted one as a kid, but never got one. The guns always remind me of V: The Final Battle. Wasn't there another, larger rifle also? Great review, great trip back in time.

I have these guns. I received three guns (two of them knew), and two new vest and sensors. They are pretty cool. The instruction sheets that came with them are also cool.

I loved this thing. Had one when it came out. The accuracy was amazing and it makes me sad to see how poor quality some of the modern stuff has been.

The Hasbro LTAR in the background was also designed by Shoot The Moon, at least the company that came out of restructuring. It also functions really well without the iPhone or iPad. It’s also backwards compatible withe the earlier Lazer Tag Team Ops line and the Phoenix LTX line.

We were so hyped up for these things. My brother and I guessed which ones they might be, pressed down on the wrapping paper, and detected them! We probably should have gotten busted for that, but it being Christmas Eve, I guess our parents were in a charitable mood and they actually let us open them early! There was another device we got too: it had a sensor on 3 different sides and sat on the floor (with short spring loaded legs, iirc). I think it was designed for training. As it turned out, for us the novelty wore off pretty quickly (for one we were bummed that you could not see a red laser beam like they had sometimes depicted), and I think it would have been more exciting with a group rather than just the two of us... but the cool look of the toy itself lasted on, and there are several home movies we made years later featuring the vest, guns, etc as props.

I found two items that I don’t think were very well known at the time that work with these blasters. Rather, I found two of the same item, and that was the star base. Have you heard of the star base?

Does anyone remember the 80s toy, where it was a spaceship with a pistol grip and to my understanding, as an 8 yr old boy, was that u would watch a weekly TV show, where people would have lit up sensors on their chest, and u were supposed to shoot them on the TV screen with your spaceship toy, in real time and you were lead to believe u could kill them ..which made absolutely no sense
