I had 2 rifles, 4 guns. The design was futuristic, didn't feel as 'toyish' as one would expect. The range was crazy as heck. Those laser guns were just pure fun! I never understood why the competition became more popular, they looked clunky, ugly and awkward !

Dude, I remember getting this for Christmas and was SO FREAKING HAPPY! Unfortunately, not all my friends had it so I was stuck with my imagination for a while and went on "quests" solo until they were able to get their sets. Then we found out that the range that the laser reached was not all that far. LOL! But it was still a fun game to have.

It never bothered me that it fired IR light instead of visible laser beams, it was just a thing I took for granted. I just thought "Visible laser beams are fiction, reality is invisible IR light." Am I the only one?

The problem with Lazertag is that not enough people had it. I think one other person on my block had it and we played together like one time. The commercial had the benefit of a more elaborate set up but it just wasn’t any fun to play with by yourself.

I guess I was lucky. I watched a group of kids in my trailer park where I grew up. Some how we picked up a set at the swap meet (I think it was the kids I was babysitting for. Played the crap of laser tag (rechargeable batteries) around a massive trailer park (about 150 trailers). So much fun, met my best friend that way.
You where always trying to make friends, so you could trade NES games.

The original pistol had a bulb in in the pop out panel, and a green filter. So it emitted a green flash when you pulled the trigger. Later versions (post stupid cop) had the bulb circuitry removed. I F'in loved this game. I had 3 or 4 pistols and a rifle, and I'd hand them all out to the neighborhood kids. We'd play ALL NIGHT LONG. Night games were so fun! Still have two rifles, 3 vests and 3 sensors. My 16yr old daugher loves this thing.

Invisible lasers is where it's at! If they were visible, every time someone fired there'd be a giant line of light pointing out their location with pinpoint accuracy.

I was 10 when Lazer Tag came out and got the pistol set for Christmas. A few months later I got a vest and the rifle. My friends and I all played that every day for like a year.

Hah, I had the official Lazer Tag rifle that had about three times the range of the standard pistols. I could pick folks off at a solid 100 yards with that sucker with a fresh set of batteries. Plus it had a rapid-fire option where it would just shoot a continuous beam if you held down the trigger. It also had an adjustable-length stock and a shoulder strap for carrying it around. Pretty cool.
A friend of mine modified his pistol into a scatter gun. It only had a range of about 15-20 feet but it would nail any sensor within a 135-degree arc in front of him. He actually had to put a shield on it to keep it from hitting his own sensor.

My family was poor, so I had the off-brand version of this called Phaser Force. That one was $40 for a set of 2 sensors and guns. I always wished I would have been able to get Lazer Tag instead, but watching this video just shows me that they were both exactly the same. Only Phaser Force didn't have the cheezy commercials and cool art.

Shoot the moon stayed in business until 2019. It just turned into a design company for other manufacturers/distributors.
The Lazer Tag Team Ops, Phoenix LTX, and LTAR lines made by Hasbro were all designed by Shoot the moon.
Two of the blasters in the Laser Tag Team Ops even had hidden WOW modes.

  • @quarterinmynose

I had the full set...must have got it after the shooting incident. I don't know how else my parents could have afforded all that. 2 pistols, 2 vests, 4 sensors, 1 rifle, 1 helmet, and the starbase thing for playing by yourself.
The rifle was beast, almost unstoppable with the rapid fire enabled, the starbase was un-beatable all on its own. It cut you no slack, as soon as your sensor was exposed you were dead. I hated that thing.
I had some good play sessions with this stuff, honestly one of the better toys of its era.

This is still my all time favorite toy from my childhood. I had the starlite set, ball cap, vest, helmet, rifle, and star base. I've always wondered why my parents didn't let me play with it outside with my friends or in the backyard; the police shooting probably made my mom overly paranoid.

Haha, brings back 2nd grade memories. Everyone nowadays talks about how much better the Photon home version was than this, but I never played it. Everyone I knew had Lazer Tag (probably because it was cheaper) and that's what we played.

Chef Danger Photon had actual arena equipment used in their toys, so that is a bigger step up in quality

    • @k.h.1587
      @k.h.1587 Рік тому

@@hellacia8151 uh, no. The photon toy was a cheap plastic scaled down version of the arena system , and the arena system won't work without a game computer, radio link, and an arena enclosed in a faraday cage. I owned photon, played the real thing, and had friends with lazertag. I liked the way photon worked as an integrated system with a sensor in the gun and helmet all tied to the same score, rather than individual sensors of lazer tag.
The build quality and accuracy was a little better on Lazer tag. Photon had a flaw where you can't be hit while firing, and the fire duration was quite long, one team being slightly longer, so those phasers had a slight advantage. Why they didn't put a sensor on the chest pod or back of the helmet escapes me.
Both were toys with advantages and disadvantages and were not compatible so no mixing and matching was possible.
I played real photon in 1987 thru 1989 and again in 1997 on a couple trips back east where a "new" one had opened.

Not an invisible laser. Infrared light. As you said, like a TV remote. That Starlyte was pretty freaking badass though. It was very comfortable to hold, and it looked badass. You didn't even mention the beam adjustment switch on the front. It switched it from a narrow to a wide beam. Though, you really couldn't tell much difference. The narrow beam would go a little farther.

I was one of the lucky ones to get their hands on a brand new WHITE starlyte and star sensor. I didnt even know they hit the shelves I got it from an inside source and still have it never used wrapped in bubble wrap. I am selling a bunch of lazer tag stuff now on ebay but I am keeping that along with my orig.set I still have one brand new boxed black set and some loose sets. This was a fun game I loved it and played all the time I collected the stuff for years and am now 42 years old. Then paintball hit the scene after WOW went bankrupt! That was fun also.

So Nerf actually released their own version of Laser Tag like last month called Laser Ops Pro. Connects to your phone and the app of the same name via bluetooth and it's just as fun as it was back in the day. The best part is you don't need a phone or the app to play. They work with or without the app, minus the score count and weapon upgrades. And what's funny is that a set of two guns is like $40 and there's a rifle version for $5 more.

In my experience, if you try to play this on a skateboard, you're gonna have a bad time. While these were kind of fun, the real failing point was the propensity for people to cheat by placing their hand over the sensor was overwhelmingly high and took the fun out of the rest of the game. The laser tag models you can buy today come with brighter guns and multiple sensors so it makes the game easier to have fun with. The easiest way to make the beams visible is a nightshot camera and a fog machine

The “Lazer Tag” brand would have been given to Tiger Electronics sometime in the 90’s and start of a string of laser tag blasters and later in 2004 Lazer Tag Team Ops, which paid tribute to Worlds of Wonder by having the IRT-2X and TMB taggers have a hidden feature that makes them act like WoW blasters. The brand would then go to Hasbro in 2008, who eventually killed off the series after the poor marketing of the Lazer Tag Augmented Reality system in 2012.

They arrived guns drawn and ordered us to drop the "weapons" and put our hands in the air while holding us at gun point. I don't fault the police, but the shock of having a real gun pointed at me forced me to never play with toy guns outside of my house ever again. I still have all of my Lazer Tag guns and gear. They're just too damn cool to toss.
