    This cancer took my beloved 5 pound Maltese. She had sudden onset of weird howling symptoms when her spleen tumor burst on a Sunday evening. Rushed her to the specialty/emergency vet and she had her spleen removed and a bunch of transfusions by next morning. Doctor said “he didn’t like the way her tumor looked” so we had a heads up to prepare for the worst. He was correct and a very good surgeon. She survived almost 2 years of good quality of life up until the last day. That was with aggressive chemotherapy treatments, which are expensive but extremely well tolerated by dogs (better quality of life).

    Lost my 12 yo schnauzer to this, thank God my vet felt the mass. Went to surgery but it was Mets to other organs and bloody. I elected to help her cross the bridge. She never had pain, ate her favorite food the last few day before surgery. I believe it is important to have your routine vet checks. I have a great relationship with my vets, so I trust them completely. I currently have 2 miniature schnauzers and a standard schnauzer.

    I had to make hard choice last night to put my dog down. He was a 9y/o Boxer named Tyson. He was doing fine earlier in the day but then suddenly fell ill during the evening (pale gums and lethargic) I rushed to him to the vet and was told that he had Hemoabdomen w/ suspect pericardial effusion. I feel guity now that I didn't take my chances with fighting the cancer despite the doctor telling me that I would only extend his life by 2-3 months.

    Loved your parts 1 and 2 on HSA. Looking forward to part 3. I have a Golden who had a small lump under her tongue 2 yrs ago and it was dx with HSA. Then another one last year under the tongue which was removed with clean margins. 2 yrs ago we had an US done and there was a "shadow" on the spleen. Last month she started having some small bleeds but recovered nicely. Then 3 weeks ago we decided to have the spleenectomy because the US showed a large mass with bleeding. She had a liter of blood in her belly when they removed her spleen. She is doing great now and her usual self. They did find some more "spots" under her tongue but just used some freezing tx on them because she had a rough surgery. We've decided not to do chemo since we know it has spread and just plan to give her a good quality of life with her time left. She also had a melanoma on her eye before we rescued her and she lost her eye. So we think she's had enough. She is such a sweet loving dog though. If there was a chance for remission we would do everything possible. How do you feel about our decision? She's about 9 yrs old-we're not totally sure.

      So glad you like part one and 2. Part 3 will be out on Wednesday! I think as long as you make an educated decision, there is no right or wrong. Chemo is so well tolerated in most dogs and there are so many myths and misconceptions about it that many people in my experience say no because they think it will be like chemo in people. Make sure you check you my chemo playlist if you need more info. But chemo is not for every family. I am just trying to provide good info :)

    Thank you for all the info. My Schnauzer is 14 and he has been diagnosed with mass on the spleen. He has a heart murmur and my Vet says that he would probably not make it through surgery. He was diagnosed back in may. I started giving him Yunnan Baiyao and also I'm - Yunity per my Vets recommendation, he is also taking heart medication. Just in the last few days he is throwing up and not digesting his food. Eats only a little. I don't think that I have any options at this point since he is older and has a bad heart :-(. Thank you so much for all the info that you are sharing. God bless you!

    Recently, My husband took my olde English bulldog in ER vet due to weakness and not walking very well. He just turned 9 less than 2 weeks before. No Health issues that we were aware of before. They checked his vitals and sent him home saying he was tired from the 75 vetprofen and 50mg tramadol that was given to him. He even mentioned to them how light his gums were. They pushed on his gums and replied see, they come right back to color.
    I took him back there about a hour later due to pale games, irregular breathing and mentally going downhill. The vet came to me saying she did an ultrasound and saw what she thought was a softball size hemangiosarcoma on spleen and fluid in abdomen and saw a little fluid around heart and lungs. She was pretty sure by the look of tumor that it was cancerous, no other tests were done. She said that she absolutely would not try to stabilize him for surgery due to his condition and could not save him. He had no symptoms that I was aware of before this day. I wish that this was talked about more within the vets offices so if owners wanted to screen their dogs, they had the option to. I’m just trying to go through the motions and get through. It doesn’t feel possible at this time. Trying to look back and think if I missed something and guilt that a lot of us feel. After watching this, I’m very worried that I let him go and it may not have been cancer. She didn’t do any other tests. Do you think if she did see fluid around heart and lungs that it may have been cancer?

    This past Saturday we lost our beloved golden retriever to this dreadful cancer. He suddenly became very weak and lethargic for no apparent reason. By the time we got him to the emergency vet, he could no longer stand or walk. His gums were very pale and he exhibited abdominal breathing so I knew his condition was grave.
    The vet told us that he had a very large quantity of blood in his abdomen from a ruptured spleen caused by a burst tumor, most likely a hemangiosarcoma. With treatment, his life expectancy was only a few months at best. We didn’t want to put him through that and decided to say our goodbyes to him, as painful and heartbreaking as that is. Bucky would have been nine in May.
    We never suspected that our boy was suffering from cancer. We took him for checkups religiously, fed him high quality food and he exhibited no outward signs of illness. This is what makes this cancer so deadly and heartbreaking. Because it is so aggressive, early detection and treatment only extends life by months rather than years. That is not enough and a more effective treatment is desperately needed.

      Hello Im sorry for the loss of your pet. I lost my Golden also two weeks ago. Story is pretty similar. I always kept up with his routine checkups every 6 months he was 8 1/2. His last bloodwork was in April which came back perfectly normal. Then on a saturday he became extremely lethargic did not seem like himself. By Monday he did not want to eat so I rushed to his vet where they took xrays and found fluid in his heart and lungs. He also had tumors that metatisized to his other organs. I was in shock and could not believe that 2 days prior he was fine and now he was in advanced stage of this aggressive cancer.
      I ended up rushing him to the emergency vet since i felt like I couldnt believe what my vet was telling me when a month prior he was given a clean bill of health. By the time we got there his breathing got worse and he was getting weaker. They ended up confirming the same thing the vet had told me and unfortunately they said he probably would not make it through the night and I had to make the decision to put him to sleep. All in a matter of 3 days my boy was gone. He never showed me any symptoms up until the last 2 days. His loss has been a shock to me and I miss him everyday.

    Hi Dr Sue, My dog has a mass that is related to either the spleen or liver. They are not sure which. What is the prognosis if it is on the liver - worse or better than the spleen? Additionally, if there is metastases, is there a place where you would advise not to go through with the surgery as it would really hurt my dog? I know you mentioned the lungs but i do want to be informed before i make the decision. Rex has a CT tomorrow and possibly surgery. I thank you in advance!

    I am so sad to have watched this way too late, our golden passed 9 hours after leaving our family vet, we asked to remove spleen but she insisted on waiting for an ultrasound that she couldn't schedule for 2 weeks,,, we are heartbroken at this time, I have the xrays and am disgusted in our family vet,,, he haemorrhaged into his stomach at 3am on Sunday as we raced to the ER I am a human nurse and am mad at myself, why didn't I push harder, or take him to the VET ER after she detected a spleen mass, she did say he was borderline anemic,,, she didn't offer the labs until requested, after the I don't blame our vet for his cancer but blame her for not checking his clotting time, for not sending us to the ER for an ultrasound, it's her job to educate us, it was the most helpless feeling, his gums pale whole reason for taking him in his hgb 1 yr ago was 18.2, on Saturday 13.1, x rays, CBC, no PT/Ptt, hindsight is always clearer, you are amazing, I will bookmark your channel, I wish we would have found you sooner, I appreciate you taking the time to educate, I can't help but cry and be angry, still grieving,,, thank you for what you do. I have multiple sclerosis he was one of my therapy service dogs, I do have another service dog medical alert/ mobility aide, I will be changing VETS and requesting US after 5 years of age for our other goldens as well... sorry for venting but THANK YOU for educating the non pet nurse 💔😢 our family VET didn't even call to give condolences, as her front office said didn't you sign a euthanasia form?! yeah he was bleeding to death the ER couldn't not get a IV in or a blood pressure, they did check his abdominal fluid as his stomach was rigid and it was all blood,,, urgh...

    My 10 year old German Shepherd had 4 collapsed discs diagnosed after his sudden loss of use of rear legs. The MRI looking for the spinal abnormality and possible FCE incidentally revealed a mass on his spleen. U S showed no other masses in lungs or liver, or anywhere in the abdomen. His appetite and energy level was great and blood work normal, so surgeon elected to to do US guided biopsy rather than splenectomy. I am going to give him the disc decompression surgery if the biopsy is benign. If not, we will remove the spleen. Do you think it should have been removef since you don't reccomend aspirates? He had no bleeding afterwards and vet thought a decent chance it was not cancerous. Now I am thinking he should have just removed the spleen.

    So i took my sweet boy to the medvet because he was acting weird (just laying around not much energy) the did blood work, ultrasound, and xray. So she came back to us with he has a mass on his spleen and his liver. She gave us options and of course we said surgery let's give him every chance we can. Transfered to the surgery area and the surgeon did raidiograph and came back with the same bad news, it was more than likely hemangiosocarma because he seen nodules on the lungs and didn't recommend surgery. So my question is if it traes to diffrent areas is it more than likely hemangiosocarma?

    Great information! I lost my chocolate lab Max to a splenic tumor this past April; oddly enough my other lab was diagnosed also but several months before we found out Max had it and she's still with us with no treatment. Our vet gave Shelby, golden lab, 30 days, next month, it will be 1 yr and that's without treatment. I'm constantly checking her gum color and her belly is so big :( She's only had 1 major bleed. She also has hypothyroid and has idiopathic epilepsy. This past Saturday, she collapsed having 2 seizures back to back, could this be caused by the splenic tumor?

    • @DrSueCancerVet
      @DrSueCancerVet  4 роки тому +3

      The seizures are likely related to the epilepsy but hemangiosarcoma - if that is what the splenic mass is - is also the most common cancer to spread to the brain. I recommend you check in with your vet for the seizures asap. Good luck!! xo And thanks for watching. So glad you found it helpful. Part 3 will be out on Wednesday

    Dr. Sue, great videos. Thank you so much for making them. My 7 1/2 year old healthy border collie suddenly quit eating, started coughing, and developed a nose bleed. Ultrasound showed a mass on her spleen and fluid in her abdomen. From your video you mentioned that with these two conditions the probability of hermangiosarcoma is 85%. Ultrasound shows spots in her liver and the x-rays show small spots on her lungs. Her anemia has improved with steroids and yunnan baiyao.
    Questions: Your video mentioned that you can’t we say in this case that we’re pretty sure she has hermangiosarcoma? Could we buy some time for her by removing the spleen, the immediate culprit? What is the statistical prognosis for metastasized hermangiosarcoma after spleen removal?

    My papillon is 7 years old. My question is; It`s commonly known that there are chemicals assosiated with toxic reactions in dogs, like some tick and flee medications. Neurological reactions, severe skin reactions. Last summer and then in October my Papillon girl had a tick and flee tablett. Within a couple of weeks she started to develop dramatiic symptoms. She has now struggled a whole year with acute wet dermatitis rash, and other behavioural changes, she is among other things now very tired exausted. CT shows that She has now developed a mass in her spleen, her blood values looks on the very low or beyond side of normal, she has pail gums. We are ongoing with a new Veterinarian to figure out what to do. But my question, is, can these chemicals in tick and flee tablets be potencial to cause canser in dogs as well as the other known reactions? It is commonly suspected In humans vether enviormental or food indused that can cause a canser reaction. Why don`t we consider this possebility when it comes to dogs? Greetings from very sad and frustrated dog owner in Norway.

    • @slayorcs
      @slayorcs Місяць тому

      I'd like to know more about this topic too. From what I have read there is some speculation that toxic chemicals are suspected, but not scientifically proven, along with genetic predisposition. I lost my beloved Cairn Terrier today after a splenectomy 5 months ago with the histology report stating tumours positive for hemangiosarcoma. It had spread to his liver in that time. I'm particularly interested in the pesticides that people spray around their gardens and in public areas and walkways. Glyphosate and other pesticides are used widely here in Australia with little thought about the impact on the environment, animals and humans despite findings in other countries that suggest these are potentially carcinogenic.

    Hi Dr Sue - My dog died 4 months ago of Hemanciosarcoma, despite surgery to remove a mass from her liver. She was 13 years and 5 months old. From the time the vet felt the lump, to her death was just 9 weeks. She recovered well from the surgery so I was hopeful it may have cured her, but then the biopsy result came back as hemangiosarcoma.
    I feel doubtful the surgery gave her any extra time with me. But I would do the same again because I wanted her to be rid of that horrid tumour - and of course surgery was the only hope of curing her, had it been benign, and the only way to find out definitively what the mass was.
    Can you answer a question that has been puzzling me? I was told about my dog's abdominal lump by a vet in mid February this year, and despite handling her every day I had never felt it myself. The surgeon who removed it told me it was huge, 'bigger than her head', and she was a tiny Maltese. It scares me that I was never aware of it, and only took her to the vet because she suddenly went off her food.
    If the tumour had been discovered earlier, say a few months before when it was much smaller, and removed then, am I right in thinking that still would NOT have been a cure because Hemangiosarcoma is incurable? But presumably if it had been removed when small, she would have had a better prognosis? The surgeon told me she could not be confident she had left a good margin of healthy tissue, because the tumour was so big. She was a small Maltese who at her heaviest weighed 7lbs, and at time of surgery was only around 4lbs, so there was hardly any room for the mass, it had grown so big.
    I hope to get another dog someday, and am worried about the same thing happening when the dog gets older and the likelihood of cancer increases. I am still stunned that I didn't feel this huge mass in my little dog's tummy, and by the time a vet did it was too late for it to be successfully removed. If a vet can feel an abdominal tumour, could a pet owner be trained to recognise one by touch? I think if I get another dog, I would get an ultrasound scan every year after age 7 and perhaps twice yearly after 10. Is that a wise precaution?
    Any tips you can offer would be much appreciated!

      First I am so sorry for your loss. Second I recommend you watch my 2 videos on Top 10 warning signs of cancer. Finding the internal cancers can be hard. I recommend the imaging tests like you suggest but I recommend BOTH abdominal ultrasound AND chest x-rays (3 views & they should be reviewed by a radiologist ) and I recommend these tests every 6 months after middle age - which varies based on the breed and size of the dog. I also recommend visits to your vet twice a year as well. Again I am sorry for your loss.

      @@glamdolly30 Thank you for your kind words. I never say never and never say always when it comes to cancer. I do think early detection helps but it is of course hard to know how early detection could have changed things for Molly. There are some dogs with good outcomes but sadly for this cancer they are the exceptions but there are survivors. It is estimated to be about 5% of cancers but the incidence of cancer in dogs is hard to know (not all cases reported centrally somewhere and no census to know population). I talk more about prognosis (and treatment) in part 3. New videos on Wednesdays. Please tell people who need to know (unfortunately) about my videos and channel, as I am passionate about education and raising awareness. #KickCancersButt

      @@DrSueCancerVet Bless you Dr Sue. I am sad to hear the cancer that killed Dolly was such a rare one. But I realise we don't have a comprehensive database of cancer stats for pets, and that the likelihood of any cancer rises sharply for all animals (including ourselves) once we reach middle age and beyond.
      I was so close to my dog, that I naively assumed I would find any sinister lump or bump the second it appeared, and be able to get her speedy treatment. Seems I was living in a fool's paradise. This tragedy has been a big shock to me - and an education. And as you rightly say, education is so very important for pet owners.
      Your superb UA-cam channel is providing a fantastic resource in that regard, and I am telling many people about it here in the UK. I haven't found another UA-cam channel giving professional insights on animal cancers anywhere near as good as yours (and trust me, I did the research over many sleepless nights with my dying dog). So I feel sure your channel will continue to grow, as it deserves to.
      I hope to get another dog someday, when I have grieved for Dolly and am ready to care for another little soul. And when I do, I feel I will be a more effective and knowledgeable pet parent, thanks to your hard work in creating this wonderful UA-cam channel. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Dr Sue. With warm regards, Lisa. X

    Dr how do you approach a cranial mediastinal mass which was confirmed hemangiosarcoma?

    Tumour looked too invasive in CT scan

      Unusual to be mediastinal. It is not heart-based? Ideally you would want to remove with surgery, the follow up with chemo, but if that is a mediastinal lymph node, where is the primary?

    Why isn’t this caught earlier via yearly ultrasounds? Some dogs die because it ruptured their spleen (hematoma). So if you see a mass early we can take the organ out (unless it’s the heart). Can you clarify?

    My cat was diagnosed in January. His had already metastasized so only chemo was an option to try to slow it down. He passed in April. How rare is this in cats? The ultrasound tech at my vets said she never saw anything like it, especially since 7 months ago his ultrasound was clear.

    I just lost my third golden retriever with ten years from hemangiosarcoma, the first 2 of the heart and the last of the spleen with metastasis to the liver. It's such a very aggressive disease and all my Goldens died within 3weeks of diagnosis. I'm heartbroken to have lost my Sydney, Bailey, and Sailor at around 12 years of age from this. Goldens are predisposed to this cancer. I adore the breed but will have to think hard whether I want to get another.

    My girl (9 yr old Great Dane) had a Spenectomy with an 11 pound tumor removed 2 weeks ago. The spleen had torsioned which gave us symptoms. The tumor had not ruptured nor was it bleeding. Our Vet did not send for biopsy, he said he was sure it was HSA. He said he did not see any metastasis. So, we are holistically treating her as if she does have HSA, but now am unsure what to do. Should I continue? How will I know whether she actually has HSA?

    • @DrSueCancerVet
      @DrSueCancerVet  4 роки тому +2

      Unfortunately without the spleen being submitted for biopsy there is not way to know, but if you are treating her holistically I think that is fine to continue with supplements. Check out part 3 on treatment as I do talk about supplements in that one as well. Good luck! Keep me updated. ua-cam.com/video/2Z4pOIQJoi0/v-deo.html

We did 2 ultrasounds and discovered something on my dog's spleen (female, aprox 12/13 years old, rescue) and one doctor said to get a biopsy before surgery (but we are concerned about bleeding) and the other one said to remove the spleen and send it to the lab. Our main concern besides anesthesia is the life expectancy after surgery.
