What is DEF? Diesel Exhaust Fluid is a mixture of urea and water (32.5% urea, 67.5% water) and pretty pure. What DEF to buy? Mercedes sells a DEF product called AdBlue. It’s the same Diesel Exhaust Fluid as everyone else sells. In other words, you can get it much cheaper elsewhere. Cheapest: Fill up from a truck stop DEF dispenser. Just like fuel pumps, truck stops have DEF pumps too. It’ll be much cheaper per gallon. It’ll also probably be fresher than any you find in a carton. Cheaper cartons than Mercedes: We have used several different brands. Prestone’s 2.5 gallon packs work well, although their pouring spout is super-cheap. You can buy the 2.5 gallon containers for less than the price of 1/2 gallon of Mercedes’ AdBlue. We’ve also used Peak BlueDEF which comes in a cardboard pack. You don’t take it out of the pack - just expose the cap and screw the spout on. Harder to pour, but it works just fine.
Thanks for good advice to drive highway speeds twice a month---Do you think 30 mins at highway speed is enough time to regenerate the DPK ? I have a 2014 MB sprinter 3500 had a DEF sensor warning and only gave me 10 more starts. Got it to a German auto.mechanic who filled me up on DEF fluid (non MB) but sensor was malfunctioning and wouldn't reset after refill (4 gallons!) so they told me the emissions system should still be under warranty and to take it into dealership. Dealership charged me $0 and refilled with MB adblue warned me never to use anything else, and got the sensor to turn off. Then my battery drain issue kicked in and the whole van went dead...when I went in for a smog, all the monitor sensors wouldn't reset. Had to go back to dealership just a week later for a second smog --but they got it to pass--sometimes only a good MB dealership knows best.

Yes for sure get it checked out, may be covered under warranty depending on when you purchased it or what the date of purchase was for original owner. Box sensor itself won’t usually cause it to “drive bad” but will cause problems sooner than later so def get it checked out!

Great vids. Mercedes didn’t help the situation by making the DEF cap the same color as the wiper fluid cap. They could have picked literally 100 Different colors and they picked blue, go figure. It was probably the same engineer that designed the whole shitty problematic DEF system.
Hi! So i have a 2017 cargo 3.0. I accidentally left the DEF go low, and there was a countdown that started. By the time I realized it, i was at countdown 1. I didn’t turn the engine off because I panicked, thinking that I won’t be able to turn it back on again. I added def immediately. The light didn’t go off. This morning, it showed “start iddle” I started driving, the van won’t drive more than 5 miles per hour Can you please help? Much appreciated!!
So many factory defects in my Sprinter van Ed Mercedes won't fix them and wants to charge me thousands of dollars to fix factory defects $7,000 in maintenance just for fluids nothing wrong with the van but $7,000 for maintenance
Hi and thank you for reaching out! It varies depending on how much time you are running the engine and what size your tank is (older models had a few sizes, newer models have only 1). The longer intervals of driving will use less because it's cleaning it and running more efficiently but if you are idling it will use A LOT more. Stop and go driving it will last 1-2 weeks, highway probably 3-4. Again, depends on tank size (3-7 gallon) but on the info I gave, I am basing it on the average 5 gallon tank.
Its a 2021 3500xd luxe. I just took delivery from the manufacturer and it's my first rv. Lots of unfamiliarity, and lots to learn, with no live resources to ask questions at the moment. The DEF gauge is currently ambiguous as i can't tell if it's full or empty lol. I've got a about a hundred miles and was hoping to see the gauge move by now. Hasn't blipped in any direction yet.
If the plug box light goes out the vehicle won't run it's an over-exaggeration but you get my point the slightest thing wrong with the vehicle and it shuts down leaving you stranded even if it's not real even if it's just a communication device problem and there's nothing actually wrong with your vehicle it will leave you stranded

First 40k miles DEF indicator would go on every 8000-10000 miles on the same 2.5 gallons. Please help. Also I will be happy to know how DEF is mixing with fuel. Is there a special pomp ? Is fuel filter involved in this procedure? There is no leak under the engine. Thank you
DPF is filled with ash and needs to be cleaned or replaced. And DEF doesn't "mix with fuel". It is injected into the selective catalytic reduction to eliminate NOx gases created by the DPF.
It’s such a terrible system, federal emission standards have ruined the beauty of Mercedes diesel. The 648 and 606 engines were amazing. Even the 642 prior to the 2008 Bluetec.
Well unfortunately MB didn’t have say in that, it was federally regulated when they switched over in 2009 to DPF system. I hear you tho, those 90s and early 2000s Diesel engines were bad AF 😝
You should have been more clear. It will void your warranty on that particular part of the vehicle, not the whole vehicle. Your suspension, electronics, etc. are still under warranty.
High-water India full destroy the whole system that's really interesting because the DF doesn't add it till the end of the exhaust so the defective design lost it's constantly going bad boy you can think of lots of reasons other than this defective from the factory
Dealership really doesn't understand the bad blue system they're not really mechanics they just read what the laptop tells them to do not really understanding what they're doing Look on UA-cam there's a 1000 cases of this

I just fixed my DEF filter but I have a sensor that says start idle and now my sprinter won’t go over 20 mph. What do I do?
Hey! Does it work? Sorry was out of town
Excellent info. Why is there a current lawsuit about this?
Have you read the information on The mb blue tech settlement site?
a college found high emissions while road testing
what happens when zero start limit happens? The dealer tells me I can drive in limp mode, but people online are saying it won't start after zero starts. So what will happen after zero starts?
You have to take it in, DPF 99% of the time! Sucks. But no way to really avoid, only thing you can do it try to limit.
@@VanBae I did take it to the dealer and the reset the start count, and they said it shouldn't come back. The start count came back after a few trips. I had to order a DPF from online because the dealers cannot get any in stock from Germany. I do have a service appointment for Friday, but I only have 2 starts left again. I wanted to know if I can get away driving in. limp mode until Friday or will I end up being stranded?
I run my van with the def deposit empty, the I fill it up, but, the engine light won't turn off, and also I hace a note my display that says "adblue system failure. What should I do?
Definitely take it to the dealer! It’s probably got a nox issue
Is the gas 2.0l sprinter having any problem and how many miles will they last?
No problems so far! 2 years in, I’ve seen them with over 100k and no issues
@@VanBae is that what Amazon is using ?
Gas and diesel combo depends on the driver
@@VanBae are people still buying diesel sprinter after def problems ? Also have they found any fix on it?
Fix on what specifically? Yes, predominately purchasing diesel
🔥🔥🔥
Can't just like rev the engine in neutral for a while if you're forced to be idle regularly?
I mean, it has to open the exhaust and reving it will not do the same thing. Needs to be driven.
So I ran out of def and went into limp mode,in the middle of nowhere, then it hit me,I can just piss into the def tank, did just that, van started driving fine and I've been doing just that since,I make sure to piss into my def tank every other tank fill up,no problems whatsoever!!!!!
LOL!!!! That's hilarious!
Hi There
Do you have video for ML250 bluetec .Problem EGR erro ? My car driving on highway and slow down and stop ? Just 50K why
Need you guys help .Thank you very much
No 😞 but I assume it’s closer to the same
I think the best way is to remove all that bs as soon as possible
What do you mean?
Thx
Great vids. Mercedes didn’t help the situation by making the DEF cap the same color as the wiper fluid cap. They could have picked literally 100
Different colors and they picked blue, go figure. It was probably the same engineer that designed the whole shitty problematic DEF system.
Lol well, technically the stuff had blue in the name so it does make some sense but that’s hilarious
Perhaps the giant "DEF" on the cap could be a clue?
I need help ..are ad blue made car loss power
This morning, it showed “start iddle”
I started driving, the van won’t drive more than 5 miles per hour
Can you please help?
Much appreciated!!
Its part of saving the Planet, drive 5 Miles an hour is good for the environment
HI! I don't know why your comment was hidden! I assume you are all good now?
You are wrong. My 2016 sprinter reads def level with the m o - + cluster buttons! Fyi
So many factory defects in my Sprinter van Ed Mercedes won't fix them and wants to charge me thousands of dollars to fix factory defects $7,000 in maintenance just for fluids nothing wrong with the van but $7,000 for maintenance
When I spend 70k on a vehicle, I don't have to go through all this shit.
Right! Wtf? C’mon Toyota, make a van for the US market! I got the $$$ ready!
Lol!!! I think the Germans got it made with the vans. We did patent it you know 🙌
Mine is a black cap
How many miles should you get out of a full tank of DEF?
@@synconianattiness4809 send me the vin number, I can send you more detailed information. And your email.
@@synconianattiness4809 Do you need someone to tell you the gauge is broken? for $600 your Mercedes Mechanic will tell you that.....
How often and how long should it be driven in highway?Just purchased an used 2011 passages van, with 50k miles. Would like to last a long time.
I WOULD DO AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK FOR AN HOUR! TRADE THE VAN INTO ME, I HAVE SOME 2022'S COMING AND CAN PAY GOOD MONEY FOR YOURS :)
@@VanBae Im in Poughkeepsie New York, where is your shop?
@@OlisYFaby it’s in Brooklyn!
Would you just buy the van or only take it as a trade-in?
I really don’t want to have a loan on a van.
Only 16,000 miles and now my $300,000 van won’t go faster than a $40 bicycle, 5 mph. Mercedes used to mean something.
What a good brand for off brand def
Hi! What do you mean?
@@VanBae if you're not close to a Mercedes-Benz dealership what is the best brand of DEF fluid to buy at a normal store
@@davekent20 goto vw mercedes dealer here carries cheap stuff, vw carries real ad blue , save receipt and remember warranty is 8 yrs onmb emmission equipment
What do you mean off brand? You need to use Mercedes or VW DEF brand, and use only Merc dealership to work on your Merc, you are now a Merc owner, act like one and give them your wallet
@@mannyechaluce3814 I like to give people the options, because if you read the manual it says you CAN use other, as long as it's approved. Sometimes it's not about money, but where you are driving the van, you may run low and need a fill up and not be close to a dealer.
DF doesn't work in Mercedes bored or whatever vehicle you have it's constantly breaking
This system is cancer can it be deleted?
This is a courtesy comment to remind you to fill up your DEF fluid.
less pollution, more headache
Lol true but life long lasting
Hey where are located?
$7000 for basic maintenance and nothing is wrong with my vehicle
I thought the dpf was cleaned by the addition of diesel to the engine exhaust to elevate the exhaust temperature. Thed def lowers the NOx emissions and has nothing to do with cleaning the dpf. A very confusing presentation with comments like cleaning the “engine”.
What are you thinking?
I've had nothing but problems with my dff tank system and exhaust completely defective and the dealership wants to cause you $9,000 for the new exhaust system
How I can contact you? I have probleme with dpf charge in 122%
What do you mean by charge 122%? email me vanbae100@gmail.com
Are these sprinters reliable? I have the 3.0 5 speed 2018. Got it brand new,
Hi!
What exactly are you referring to?
@@VanBae I’m asking if sprinter vans are reliable? I heard people hate them and others put like 300K+ miles with no problems.
Yes they are, if you take care of out with proper maintenance and driving pattern. You have had for 3 years now, what’s your opinion so far?
@@VanBae suspension steering tie rods or steering racks rattles . So weak suspension parts. 12k miles only and suspension already makes noise. The engine clicks/ticks random pattern at low RPM (I think it’s due to EGR / emissions or due to its a V6 not inline). The trans shifts okay but sometimes really hard clunk down shifting especially uphill.. cant figure out how much throttle it likes or happy with. It’s my first sprinter I guess it’s normal due to it being a cargo van. I carry light stuff to empty. Drives weird when empty , and drives happier when loaded.
I bought 3 jugs of DEF from my local MB dealer and they just gave me the crap that Walmart sells. I asked about this and they said this is what MB distributor gave them...makes no sense
Hahahahaha! That’s what I thought! I used to buy DEF from Walmart, Lowe’s and autozone. (Key word: used to)
Hilarious!!!!
Lol omg what dealer
I have 2013 Sprinter VIN WDAPF4CC0D9546232. After I replaced fuel filter on 40 000 miles the DEF usage increased drastically (2.5 gallons every 2500-3000 miles DEF indicator on instrument panel is going ON).
Vehicles constantly losing communication with devices
After market def… gotta remember to also use Mercedes approved diesel, do not use aftermarket diesel!
Dealership really doesn't understand the bad blue system they're not really mechanics they just read what the laptop tells them to do not really understanding what they're doing Look on UA-cam there's a 1000 cases of this
So you’re telling me I can’t drive this vehicle like it’s meant to be driven or the DEF system is going to mail the function? Wrong answer The right answer is a DEF delete!
Gasser power lover myself all the way, As I enjoy A more ethical and extensive tech network. I even get the oil changed at Pepboys for $49.99, labor included. U can't touch that, DEF. Compliance is getting tougher to meet by manufactures, Euro6 is the current standard in Europe.; soon 2024 , they will require an engine autokill switch if something is wrong with the DEF. Polititians care about Earth, "finally".
Can you give us some useful information? Like how do I remove all that crap you just talked about?
Should be no problems with the van. You don't sound to confident mr mechanic.
Elaborate
Def, unlike antifreeze, will freeze making my Mercedes completely useless in the mountains, where I am now stuck and freezing to death! Worthless! My first Mercedes and it’s crap! Isn’t worth a dime anymore. Zero resets will kill!
Who needs all that hassle
If the urea is too low, just pee in it!
I think you convinced me to never buy a diesel. Thanks!
Great! Lol let’s get you a gas van!
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Just look at the mechanics they've got making this commercial is this Mercedes best. These don't look like mechanics with years of experience ariance under their belt and this is Mercedes best that they got for this commercial or shall do you want these people working on your car they don't look like they drive Mercedes to me or know what they're doing
