That's because Dungeons and Dragons is not the kind of game that has a story built in. It's just mechanics to facilitate storytelling. That seems to be the thing that every D&D movie forgets. For guidelines on the right way to do this, see The Lego Movie.

Right at the beginning of your video you get the whole plot wrong, they do not set out on a quest to get the glaive. In fact getting the glaive is pretty much the first thing Colwyn does after the slayers invade and take Lyssa. The quest that they do set out on is finding the Black Fortress, because the fortress magically teleports to a new location each day at sunrise.

    • @JayColucci1

    • @TheStabwest

@@petercrenfield I'm sorry I don't see that as being a quest. For instance, I don't say I'm going on quest to the store to get a beer.
When he went to get the glaive, he knew where it was, it wasn't too difficult to get at maybe some light mountain climbing, and there wasn't even some kind of guardian to fight or traps to aviod, just stick your hand in some glowing goo and grab it. There just wasn't any struggle or hardship endured to acquire the glaive.
Now finding and getting to that damn black fortress, that was an epic quest.

I went in to see if they might have anything I would like. Sure enough, they had a copy of Krull in VHS. I was so happy to pay the guy $5 for it. Man I love this movie! Nicely done miniatures and animation, but the scene actually had some meaningful back-story and purpose within the plot, not just a thrilling monster chase scene. The production credits were top-notch - Cinematography by Peter Suschitzky (Empire Strikes Back), Edited by Ray Lovejoy (2001: A Space Odyssey).

Decent cast with some good interplay between characters and even the odd bit of cynicism. Not to mention heroism by even the weakest of characters.

Also some of the exteriors were filmed in Italy and in the Canary Islands. This was basically a British made fantasy movie with a Hollywood budget and nominal American star, like Jason and the Argonauts or Clash of the Titans.Speaking of cult movies Minty, you should do one of these videos on the 1987 film, Withnail & I. Not only is it Richard E Grant's finest hour as an actor but it's brilliantly funny but the backstory to it is fascinating.

It's sad and surprising that fantasy films of the 80's didn't do well at the box office and with critics. Krull, The Neverending Story, Legend, Willow, The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth...all childhood favorites of mine that are all now cult classics. I wonder what movies would be like today if those films made more money back in the day. Or perhaps we'd just have an oversaturation of crappy fantasy films instead of a select few awesome ones that never lose their quality.

Absolutely love Krull - one of my all time favourite fantasy movies. The actor who played Torquil - Alun Armstrong - went to the same grammar school as my dad when they were boys. They were both members of the school's drama society, and are still friends to this day. I've got a photo of them in Hamlet, where my dad is playing Hamlet's father, and Hamlet is played by Alun. Later, dad was a producer in BBC radio, and the first programme he made as part of his producer's training was picked up for broadcast by Radio 4, and he got Alun to narrate it.

One of the big problems they had was it came out at a time when a load of big movies came out and krull was never really publisised well…I remember going to school raving about it and no one knew what it was or what it was about by the time people did get interested in it it was too late it was taken of cinemas…when it came out on vhs that gave it a bigger audience but still too late for a sequel ..real shame it’s a brilliant movie I just wished they’d shown the end boss more instead of keep just showing this head with a weird camera filter on it
