Hi, My first hard drive on a PC was a XT class and i bought a used 10meg, it had everything on it, dos, nortons, xtree, pascal, word perfect, multiplan, and only @ 300 at the time mid 80's The 90's was a year of ide and rattlers 400meg to 2gig, i still have 2 x connors 420meg drives that still work, everything else from that era is dead. I have 2 toshiba laptops from XP era and in 2020 bought new old stock 60+80G 44 pin drives for them of ebay @ $30 each - i am so happy as i tri3ed to use the ide to Compact Flash adapters with no success
First they have to spin up and speak to the host system. If they won't spin up (and they were doing the dead actuator click of death) and are not recognized AS a drive by the system, you can't use software to recover the data. You could rebuild the mechanical parts (chances are the data on the disk itself is intact) which is what professional data recovery would do, but if it's the logic board, it needs to be an exact match (sometimes even the same batch).
The IBM Travelstars not working are no big suprise. Someone I watch had all of her pictures on one, and she went to back them up, and the drive just killed itself.
4:40. They also have an eBay store and yes, their prices are absolutely ridiculous. Every time I saw an old laptop on eBay with a price like that, I'd always know it was from recycledgoods. Craziest thing is that they're a recycling company so it makes the prices they ask even more ridiculous.
Your videos are always so well made, are so good, I like they a lot, I truly hope and want to your channel to grow, and to have even more views and subs, because you deserve it Michael, I think you are doing a great job! Never give up!
MJD so glad to see you succeeding the way are, I remember when you only had 20K subs and even then you had no problem to upload videos even though things don't work out the way you expect. Great video again.
2:53 - Wohoo 420! I've just waited for this to happen😂 The most awesome and interesting Video I've ever seen!! The end was so shocking! One of the best videos here! * *coughs * *
Damn, for a moment there with the whole "That's not a good sound.... Internal HDD HARD! Error (like getting a soft error is any better)" I thought I was watching Mr. Regular do a review of a laptop...
I just refurbished and sold a Dell D600 laptop which looks identical to yours. Dell still has all the old drivers on their website. It was a nice little machine! The nipple mouse was fun to use too haha
I'm reminded of the older USB HDDs we had back then. Ever since my dad learned that USB enclosures were a thing, he turned every working HDD we had from unused/broken PCs into USB HDDs. Most were desktop HDDs, so we had these huge clunky things that each used a USB B cable _and_ its own power adapter. Lol. It was cheaper than the actual ext. HDDs back then. Flash drives weren't as cheap as they are now and offered too little space for our backups. Younger me would've loved my affordable (and faster) pocket-size 2TB HDD.
Clunky but effective! This is the kind of solution I still use to this day, though no longer due to price but on account of I've got a buttload of perfectly functional HDDs so why would I possibly NEED to buy more? 😝🍍
KDS stands for Korea Data Systems and they OEMd a lot of equipment I believe back to 1990. The Gateway 2000 Crystalscan 1024ni was made by KDS. It is my understanding that they went on to become Princeton Graphics and Mag Innovision sometime later. I also think, (but am not sure), that the CEO of that company went on to financial ruin, only to come back and start Vizio.
you should actually do a sector and file recovery video and see what was last on the drive, (of course hide any private informations you find), would make a for a cool video.
I recently just saved a custom pc that was destroyed on a curb from Ida. The hard drive even worked and it booted to a Spanish install of xp pro sp1. Just thought I would share that story.
You could try seeing if there's still data on these drives with a free utility called TestDisk. Windows just stopped recognizing my disk towards the end of formatting it, so it's also useful for checking that nothing's on there anymore
I recently dug up some 44-pin IDE drives around my house that were in not-so-good conditions. I found a few with Windows XP installed, Windows 7 (which couldn't even boot), and one with Windows 2000 straight from an office workstation. I tested them on a HP Omnibook 6000 (the only computer I could find that natively supports the 44-pin IDE interface). Many were Hitachi, IBM Travelstar, and some others.
Testdisk doesn't recover file names, paid easeus recovery works better but costs a lot and it's closed source, it can also recover a lot more files than testdisk
@@namesurname4666 no since its an unallocated space u can recover the whole partition with the files inside testdisk is better when u want to recover a corrupted or a deleted partition map which is what seems to be happening here as long as he hasn’t written any files over it or hasnt zerod out the disk he is good to go
That first drive that was showing as unallocated could just have a corrupt partition table. Try using testdisk to recover the partitions if they're readable. An old USB HDD of mine did that a few times but I was able to use testdisk to recover the partition table so I could at least copy the files off.
For the Latitude D610, you can get a D-Bay to IDE adapter for like 10 bucks off parts-people, and you can do these tests much fasters without touching any screws, and it can both be detected under Windows or be booted directly. Also, next time you probably should've gave away the hard drive caddy when you give away an old laptop, finding the hard drive caddy for the really old laptops are quite hard and those older Latitudes absolutely need the caddy's internal adapter (ribbon cable) for the hard drive to work on them
depending on how they were wiped, data could be recovered but the chances of anything meaningful depend on if data was written after the wipe or as part of the wipe...
Great video Michael. I do have 1 HDD which is the Samsung brand that I got from CEX (Entertainment shop) back in 2014. It used to work but now it's dead! I did put the sticky note on top of it like what you just did saying that it is dead.
If you take the dead drives to a special place that removes the platers to another casing , you can get the data or whatever that’s on there. But expensive it’s tho.
I have an external USB 2.0 enclosure for the 44 pin IDE drives that you can have if you want to do some further testing on them. Ironically, it is actually labeled as being for an IBM Travelstar. Just let me know and I'll mail it out to you, I have no more need for it.
Until you got a D630 or D830 with a Nvidia GPU, then they're garbage. Anything Nvidia until Fermi/Kepler was garbage, reliablity wise. And even then Big Fermi (GF110 Quadros in Precisions/EliteBooks) was pretty eh
I think Michael took those comments about him sounding like Microsoft Sam to heart or something, he's putting more emotion in his voice. That's a bummer with the hard drives though, the dead ones might've had something cool on them. Now we'll never know.

Whenever Michael MJD posts its a good day keep it up!

true (thats a fact)
Absolutely!
Yup
Your personality is starting to show up in your videos, compared to the past monotone narrator voice, and I love it🤣
Just an idea but could you try connecting the "dead" drives as external also the empty ones try some data recovery to see what was on them?
Well, dead means dead. The drives are not working at all, it seems. Maybe the one with 'No boot sector' could containg something.
First they have to spin up and speak to the host system. If they won't spin up (and they were doing the dead actuator click of death) and are not recognized AS a drive by the system, you can't use software to recover the data.
