I use a wired space mouse. it has two programmable keys on either side. Often in CAD, you can program those keys to bring up a menu on the screen (that you have populated with common used commands) and this does a lot of the work that the normal mouse does. You can save these configs for different programs. This will make you faster.

I disagree about which is the most useful. The spacemouse pro is extremely useful if you set it up with the keys you want it to have. It has all of the primary keys anyone would need, and changing the other custom keys to things like, save, delete, copy, paste, undo, redo, enter etc make it even more useful. You also wouldn't have to move your hand from the spacemouse to the keyboard all the time if you used the buttons on the spacemouse instead of the keyboard keys. I suggest getting used to using them instead and stop moving to the keyboard as much. Also, the small mouse has the problem where if you lift up you just lift the mouse up off the desk, or it slides around. With the larger spacemouse pro your wrist holds the mouse down so it doesn't move forward, or up when moving around in your model. I also use each programs shortcut gestures, which gives me the same effect as hot keys. I do not use hot keys at all because of this. I also purchased a logitech G600 which I programmed so that the 12 side buttons is a number pad and the far right button is an enter key. This allows me to never have to use the keyboard unless I am typing letters, which isn't extremely common when designing (mostly just for naming things or doing drawings).

I had one of the small ones... found it was hard to use since it never stayed still on the desk, then it started to drift constantly.... I may try one of the bigger based ones in the future, but the small ones? no.
I've found that using the Enterprise with Revit is worth the time it takes to get used to it. Now that it is second nature I rarely use the keyboard. There aren't that many commands that I use multiple times an hour. Yes I can program it to make a section view, but realistically, how many times will I use the section command vs. the copy or move command. I love mine, I cut my work time in half, although some of that was just gained experience
Watched this video some time ago and convinced me to get a 3D mouse. I got the wired basic and it is great when I remember to use it. Find it useful when needing to get in close to select areas hard to get to normally. I do wonder if I should have got one of the larger versions? but didn't know if I would like it. Pleased I got it all the same.
the thing is, once you've set up your Pro or Enterprise Spacepilot, you don't need to go back and forth between the 3D Mouse and the Keyboard, for me this works best with a Mouse that supports gestures, like the MX Master etc..
Just what I was thinking. I'm contemplating buying one and thought having the mini space mouse only is such a waste to only be able to scroll. A large unit like the Enterprise can be customized so you never have to look down to reorient your fingers on a keyboard, plus reorienting again when you look up to your monitor. That takes up much time.
@@allenl9214 absolutely! What I love about the old Pro is, that it had a display too, like the Enterprise model.. I love this little status display when working with solidworks, it shows me the author of a file, when it was saved the last time (very important!) and the weight of the part 🥰
@@3LFL3DA are the keys on your Pro (or is it Enterprise?) easy to reach and click without looking down? My main reason to get one is my left fingers just keep missing when having to press Alt or ctrl keys along doing some stretching or acrobatic move to reach an alphabet key and keeps requiring me to look down to reorient. When I'm doing hundreds or thousands of clicks in a work session, it just doubles the time every moment I have to look away from my screen. I was considering a key pad like the Razer Tartarus V2 but am drawn to the scroll wheel on the 3dconnexion Enterprise. Do you have to have an additional mouse for clicking staff how fast can you model in 3d with it? Is is useful for modeling and creating things in Unity, unreal? Can you surf web with it?
This is a completely stand-alone device. A traditional mouse is still needed. It useful for all the things you mention. For web surfing, it's quite nice, since instead of endgless scrolling the space mouse can be used for scrolling
Yep, definitely doesn't replace the keyboard or the regular mouse, but utilises some of the functionality that should make it more fun and easier on the hands to manipulate in 3 dimensions.
Thanks for the brief, but bro i've a question will there be a need of using a regular mouse with it for the cursor & an ordinary functionality of a mouse with it bcs i'm using a Logitech G-510s keyboard memos plus my own preset of customized shortcuts for hyper fast workflow in Cinema 4D. bcs if i've to switch between keyboard & 3d mouse with my left hand it will may slow down my 3D modeling workflow thnx In advance.
It's the kind of thing you have to try. Yes you may loose a bit of speed lifting your hand from the keyboard but you may gain it back by being quicker in moving around the model in 3d
@@UHStudio Thankyou so much brother for replying & yes you were half right with your opinion but definitely it was a worth having weapon in my arsenal & yes i've discovered the sweet spots in my work flow with this device. but my friend i'll highly recommend that you should try Logitech G600 MMO gaming mouse with Logitech G13 gaming board using 3d mouse without them is not worth it! in mine needed tasks, testifying it after a month of usage you might already be aware of them but if not you can't imagine what you are being deprived of with these two beasts not just i've eliminated double pressing but have assign the most pressing needed tasks on my thumb you can almost have around 200 Macros with them plus integration of these devices in almost every application is a blessing with Logitech Gaming Software (Plz stay away using G hub app with them, it's a crap) nothing is on par with them specially in complex 3D modeling and in large motion graphic scenes, navigation with 3d mouse (with a small guy) is a treat. you can watch the video (Double Your Modeling Speed (Instantly!) by "Royal Skies" for G 600 & for the G 13 you have to take my words Regards.
I wonder if that would be useful in space sim games, if you can assign movement vectors to it's controls? No need for a clunky flight stick or whatever
@@UHStudio Does it allow you to tilt the camera or objects by twisting clockwise or counter-clockwise around the x-axis, if that x-axis travels from you flat from south to north? Hope that description makes sense
With the enterprise, it is possible. With the pro, at least for me, I still need additional keys on the keyboard so still need to travel. I have had intense modelling sessions though, where I have used just the Enterprise and a mouse to do everything with the keyboard of the way. It worked well, but it was quite specific, so the buttons were enough.
@@UHStudio I think it really depends how well you set up your speed dials and shortcuts. I have the Pro and only have to use the keyboard for inputting dimensions. (Fusion 360 full time)
Yes it would probably help. Check out also upright mice and trackball mice. However, the sole fact that one hand helps with moving around in 3d space is better than any traditional mouse on its own.
I had planned to purchase the mid-size one today, but thankfully I watched this video cause you make a very very good point. So I won't be buyig it today, I'll changed my mind and will purchase the small "guy" today. Thanks!!
I found it useful be near numpad, always need input number as for distances or radius. I wish there was a mouse with numpad, so doesn't need to move my had from the mouse. It is quiet a jumping between mouse and numbad
Yes as Gub has mentioned, it's only for 3d navigation and you use it with your left hand. You still have your mouse in your right hand (or vice versa if you are left handed)
Hey, small info. change your camera focus on auto but select a single spot. so if u wanna put something else in focus beside your face u just move it in the right spot. since u use a monitor to watch what u record it shouldnt be a problem. thanks for all the awesome videos!
Thanks for the feedback. That's exactly how I've set it but it's an old camera with crappy autofocus for video. New kit will be coming soon so everything should be in focus in a short while ;)
Yes, you can use if while scuplting in 3d. Not for drawing though. I believe Adobe's apps may work with it, but I don't use Adobe apps anymore and the Affinity apps don't work with it unfortunately.
Hey Dimas I’ve actually been going a lot into 3D design as of lately and I’m an apple user... I was searching for the best ergonomic mouse in the market to equip myself well to be limitless... Aside from the little wireless one that you recommend here, what other ergonomic mouse do you recommend I purchase to go with it? I’m left-handed ! Also, i know this may too much to ask but I want to purchase my first desktop computer and I found the Mac Pro very appealing although a bit too expensive.. Do you know any non-apple counterpart that is great for 3D design? I plan on making that my main career. Thank you Dima!!
3dx have released a left-handed cad mouse. I am left handed as well, but use the mouse with the right hand and I am quite satisfied with the cad mouse for the right hand
I use spacepilot pro for 8 years in Rhino in that is the meaning why I am incredibly faster than others - in spite of lot of others which, didnt get it yet , and are still slower. But in blender- it is different case. Iam moving to blender for special kind of things where it is better. But in blender you have to use lot of shortcuts which make you realy faster at all. I didn´t use it yet. But I am very happy for someone like you show the possibilities. So thank you for that! I am also using mechanical numpad keypoard on the left for the numbers. Place for 3d mouse is still there :) You are not using shortcuts on the keyboard not at all? :) Great work! Awesome channel! (and you also move from rhino to blender does´nt you ?) :)
Thanks for sharing your experience and for your kind words! I still use both Rhino and Blender. As mentined in the video, I am actually using the smallest 3d mouse at the moment, so I don't have any hotkeys set up and rely on the keyboard for hotkeys. However, if I need to input some really serious 3d time, I would pop out the enterprise and set up the hotkeys specifically for the workflow that I need.
In 2 dimensions, it is the equivalent of a laptop trackpad, scrolling in all directions with 2 fingers. In other words, the use cases outside of CAD and 3D may be minimal to my knowledge
huh, just got that compact and I was thinking - ok, but i need travel to keyboard. Silly me didn't thought about place it side by side with keyboard. indeed I can reach my keyboard macro buttons with thumb. Nice, thanks :)
Let's be honest...I purchased a 3d connexion space mouse enterprise thinking it would have been useful for my AutoCAD 3D work. I was wrong. First of all all the little buttons on this device need to be pressed several times before implementing the command you want making the workflow very slow. Secondly the rotation of the model is smooth only when you are dealing with small model built around the origin otherwise it gets absolutely messy. Third and last point the AuroCAD workflow needs several command that a modest keyboard can implement better than this expensive device because otherwise you need to switch from the 3D connexion to the keyboard making everything more complicated. Even the mouse is not so great. You can easily press the lateral buttons by mistake and the overall size is not so comfortable and need wire. I wonder why I have purchased something so useless and expensive...maybe I wanted to try getting excited by the ads...so my suggestion is to think twice. Maybe Industrial designer could find a better use but I do not encourage such an expensive device for architect! :D
Thanks for sharing your experience. While I don't use autocad, it works smooth in Rhino and would have thought that it would work just as smooth in autocad. I do find that the occasional, zoom selected (or equivalent command) helps with the 3d mouse as much as it helps with helping reset the view with a 2d mouse.
The smaller one could purely be use for rotation, whereas the larger models have plenty of capabilities for setting up shortcuts, but it is time and effort
For me i guess that those buttons are not enough to cover all the shortcuts i use (from 7 different softwares). Not worth to me if the only benefit is a smooth 3D space manipulation. I need to be precise and fast, not to seam cool doing it.
@@lorenzomanini1017 You program these buttons for each of your software separately. The device recognize the software you work with and set assigned buttons automatically.
Not as much as in 3d, but if needing to zoom quite far out and then zoom back into another area that would require a lot of scroll-zoom and panning, it does help
much enjoyed your video, I have used 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Pro for years with Sketchup and I've enjoyed it with Blender on Windows yet on my Mac Pro Blender 2.9 does not work properly. I'm capable of zooming in and out but I am not capable of rotating around the object. thank you again for your UA-cams much appreciated.
Has the performance of your Spacemouse Pro improved on Blender for Mac OS? I'm thinking of getting the Enterprise for Blender but worry if it will be fully functional on Mac OS. Thanks
Mac pro or Macbook pro? The trackpads on mac laptops work almost as good for viewport navigation with Blender and Rhino as the 3d mouse. Check out one of my videos on optimal settings to see if some adjustments to the options can fix it?
Blender has funny support for setting up the hotkeys. You basically have to set them up within Blender as opposed to the 3dx connexion app. At least that's the way it works on windows. Not sure about on mac.
I was kinda thinking the same - small one would be much closer to the keyboard...but, i have already got the mid-sized Spacemouse pro - hmm, should I spend out on another?? I do find though it's easy to assign shortcut keys to all the Spacemouse pro keys, so yes I do have doubles but all the important most used keyboard keys are also assigned right next to the Spacemouse control knob (it's actually quicker than spanning over the keyboard!)- It's like what you said about using different mouses - it helps to prevent RSI.
It doesn't always work very well with Revit specially when working with big projects and with many linked files then It gets really slow and really doesn't work. It works well with small projects
Some years ago i bought this mouse and was quite amazed. It worked well and it was much easier to design 3D stuff. But later: Using a mac i followed apple updates to a new major version of macos. At one of these upgrades the mouse driver wasn't prepared and the mouse stopped working. They needed nearly 2 years to upgrade this driver - two years i was not able to use this mouse. And even worse, when they finally fixed this problem, the material of the handle changed and the plastics got sticky. Not pleasent at all to touch the mouse. Now i don't use this thing anymore. I don't recommend it!
was thinking the same.. differently the small one. But i heard that its quite allot of bugs then using with Maya. And Maya already got enough problems just like it is. So i think i let this marinate for a bit longer
I love that you made a concise detailed video that addressed the core question at hand and kept it under 5 minutes, bravo Sir.

find very usefull your video, just a question, does it work with 2d softwares like cad or revit?
Yes it does
I had one of the small ones... found it was hard to use since it never stayed still on the desk, then it started to drift constantly....
I may try one of the bigger based ones in the future, but the small ones? no.
Might have had a faulty one. Or sometimes reinstalling the driver helps
Just ordered the mobile kit, moving and viewing my models can be so frustrating, this will be a major improvement and cut out all the frustration.
Curious to hear your experience
I've found that using the Enterprise with Revit is worth the time it takes to get used to it. Now that it is second nature I rarely use the keyboard. There aren't that many commands that I use multiple times an hour. Yes I can program it to make a section view, but realistically, how many times will I use the section command vs. the copy or move command. I love mine, I cut my work time in half, although some of that was just gained experience
That's great to hear! Do you input numbers via the 3dxware numpad popout?

Can the space mouse be used in sculpting mode ?
Most definitely!
can use both mouse regular one and this 3d space mouse?
Yes
looks so professional, but after decades of working in 3d, I never found I need rotate pan an zoom at same time.
it's one of those things that you don't know you are missing until you try it
I have both of them, and my workflow is more faster and easier than before.
Cool!
Yes, it's a nifty gadget to have on the desk
the thing is, once you've set up your Pro or Enterprise Spacepilot, you don't need to go back and forth between the 3D Mouse and the Keyboard, for me this works best with a Mouse that supports gestures, like the MX Master etc..
I'm just a little concerned about the keys on the enterprise as its not a normal keyboard layout. I dont want to spend so much buying it if it doesnt eliminate my need to stare away from screen to reorient.
@@allenl9214 communities.bentley.com/cfs-file/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/30783/3dcon_2D00_buttons.png
this is the one that I use.. the only reason I have to reach over to the keyboard ist, when entering fille names whern I create new parts within an assembley. I programmed the buttons on the spacepilot to recreate shortcuts like STRG-TAB (switch between opened files) and ALT- TAB to switch windows.. since my spacepilot offers an option to show a popup numeric keypad, I don't need to switch to the keyboard. I Thought about doing something similar with utilizing the Windows 10 onscreen keyboard, but I think it'll take me more time to klick the indiviual letters instead of switching to the keyboard..
I've seen the razer keypad too, but as you say, it won't replace the spacepilot... if you''ll give it a try, I would appreciate sharing your expierience.
and yes, I find it very easy and convenient to hit the right buttons, even without looking, took a few days to build the muscle memory
I am agree with the author but for different reason - i setup the smallest 3d mouse controller but with strokesplus programs and autohotkeys , for me the best solution for using this I don`t need extra buttons cause i have in mouse ( btw with extra 12 buttons in mouse which I using only in part ) and is much quicker. I will send my link to video how it works for me soon.
Thanks for sharing your set up.
First decent video on the damn thing, thank you Adam Friedland
Wish they were faster in getting out updated drivers for Unreal engine.
How it is now?
i did find this useful, thanks!
Cheers!
Brilliantly done video. Well scoped, well-presented, and makes a valuable salient point quickly. Thank you. Saved me a lot of hassle and wasted money.
Cheers, happy you've found it helpful 😉
Very useful thanks ! Cheers from Geneva Switzerland.
Thank you
Also- are all 6 axes of the mouse progressive/analog?
If you push more in one direction, the mouse does respond by moving/panning/rotating in the direction faster. Hope that answers your question?
Thanks for this video! I'm just about choosing the right 3d mouse for myself and after just 3 minutes I'm 100% decided on the small guy!:) Happy Xmass!
Cheers and happy to help :)
Top video, it sounds like an
horoscope podcast, that's what I liked the most
Hehe, the stars are aligned today and you can expect to have good day ;)
Do you have to have an additional mouse for clicking staff how fast can you model in 3d with it? Is is useful for modeling and creating things in Unity, unreal? Can you surf web with it?
This is a completely stand-alone device. A traditional mouse is still needed. It useful for all the things you mention. For web surfing, it's quite nice, since instead of endgless scrolling the space mouse can be used for scrolling
I'm so fucking dumb lol. I thought it replaced mouse and hated the idea. But It's a camera controller instead and I love it. Definitely a must-have.
@@UHStudio Thankyou so much brother for replying & yes you were half right with your opinion
but definitely it was a worth having weapon in my arsenal & yes i've discovered the sweet spots in my work flow with this device. but my friend i'll highly recommend that you should try Logitech G600 MMO gaming mouse with Logitech G13 gaming board using 3d mouse without them is not worth it! in mine needed tasks, testifying it after a month of usage you might already be aware of them but if not you can't imagine what you are being deprived of with these two beasts not just i've eliminated double pressing but have assign the most pressing needed tasks on my thumb you can almost have around 200 Macros with them plus integration of these devices in almost every application is a blessing with Logitech Gaming Software (Plz stay away using G hub app with them, it's a crap) nothing is on par with them specially in complex 3D modeling and in large motion graphic scenes, navigation with 3d mouse (with a small guy) is a treat. you can watch the video (Double Your Modeling Speed (Instantly!) by "Royal Skies" for G 600 & for the G 13 you have to take my words Regards.
so this works in tandem with the main mouse? but instead just use it to navigate while you still manipulate with your right hand and regular mouse?
Precisely so. The idea is too reduce strain on the right hand by offloading navigation to the left hand
@@UHStudio very cool... this will be my next upgrade... thanks for responding!
But how do I click and control the cursor
With your regular mouse
I wonder if that would be useful in space sim games, if you can assign movement vectors to it's controls? No need for a clunky flight stick or whatever
I don't think it can be used as a good old joystick. But probably someone on linux has created a driver to do that type of behaviour
@@UHStudio Does it allow you to tilt the camera or objects by twisting clockwise or counter-clockwise around the x-axis, if that x-axis travels from you flat from south to north? Hope that description makes sense
Can this be productive as a standard mouse or do you also need another conventional mouse?
you still need a traditional mouse
The point of the Pro and Enterprise version is that you DON'T go between the spacemouse and keyboard 😜
(Fusion 360 full time)
Great video
Thank you, ima prop get one soon
Glad I could help
Yo man, what do you use the spacemouse enterprise for then since you've just mentioned about using Spacemouse Pro Wireless and original Spacemouse?
I am using the larger space mouse at the office, the smaller ones at home.
I'm beginning to get pain in my hand from all the jewelry modeling in CAD I do for work. Sounds like I definitely need to get one of these.
Yes it would probably help. Check out also upright mice and trackball mice. However, the sole fact that one hand helps with moving around in 3d space is better than any traditional mouse on its own.
can you use this as a regular mouse for RSI relief? it looks like scrolling with this is quite a lot better than a the scroll wheel on my trackball.
You can use it for scrolling but not for moving the cursor
do this replace a regular mouse?
no, if you watch the whole video, it explains it
What about for Blender?
It's super useful for blender. I use it all the time
I had planned to purchase the mid-size one today, but thankfully I watched this video cause you make a very very good point. So I won't be buyig it today, I'll changed my mind and will purchase the small "guy" today. Thanks!!
Hehe, that's the one I have on my desk at the moment and the other ones stacked away
Can this mouse be used with MacOS?
Yes. All of them except the largest one called the Enterprise, last time I checked.
I found it useful be near numpad, always need input number as for distances or radius. I wish there was a mouse with numpad, so doesn't need to move my had from the mouse. It is quiet a jumping between mouse and numbad
good job. thansks
cheers :)
Whats the name of your keyboard please?
logitech k380
yes, that's the one. It's my favourite one out of the bunch. Quiet keys and 3 devices. I only wish it has illuminated keys.
How's doing 3D with a Wacom Cintiq?
I don't have a Cintiq, so I haven't tried it. I believe most people use a tablet more for sculpting workflows, especially with zbrush
Is this to be combined with a mouse or not?
Yeah because the 3D mice only move the view, they don't move the mouse pointer itself.
Yes as Gub has mentioned, it's only for 3d navigation and you use it with your left hand. You still have your mouse in your right hand (or vice versa if you are left handed)
🤯 thanks for answering!
Good to know.thanks for answering.
Hey,
small info.
change your camera focus on auto but select a single spot. so if u wanna put something else in focus beside your face u just move it in the right spot. since u use a monitor to watch what u record it shouldnt be a problem.
thanks for all the awesome videos!
Thanks for the feedback. That's exactly how I've set it but it's an old camera with crappy autofocus for video. New kit will be coming soon so everything should be in focus in a short while ;)
Can you use it while drawing or scultpting?
Yes, you can use if while scuplting in 3d. Not for drawing though. I believe Adobe's apps may work with it, but I don't use Adobe apps anymore and the Affinity apps don't work with it unfortunately.
@@UHStudio Affinity is awesome. Thanks for switching away from Adobe$ nonsense.
Does it work for unreal engine 5?
Yes
I am left handed as well, but use the mouse with the right hand and I am quite satisfied with the cad mouse for the right hand
how does it helps to 3d animator ?
Easier to move around the viewport to keyframe your objects
@@UHStudio thank you
I use spacepilot pro for 8 years in Rhino in that is the meaning why I am incredibly faster than others - in spite of lot of others which, didnt get it yet , and are still slower. Place for 3d mouse is still there :)
You are not using shortcuts on the keyboard not at all? :) Great work! Awesome channel! (and you also move from rhino to blender does´nt you ?) :)
Did you use your space pro for Blender yet? How is it working out? I want to buy a space pro or enterprise for Blender use
In my experience, the space mouse works very well with Blender for navigation.
great explained ... thx!
Glad it was helpful!
Is it useful to navigate through notepad?
In 2 dimensions, it is the equivalent of a laptop trackpad, scrolling in all directions with 2 fingers. In other words, the use cases outside of CAD and 3D may be minimal to my knowledge
huh, just got that compact and I was thinking - ok, but i need travel to keyboard. Silly me didn't thought about place it side by side with keyboard. indeed I can reach my keyboard macro buttons with thumb. Nice, thanks :)
Cheers :)
I'll buy yours for a discount xD
Thanks for sharing your experience. While I don't use autocad, it works smooth in Rhino and would have thought that it would work just as smooth in autocad. I do find that the occasional, zoom selected (or equivalent command) helps with the 3d mouse as much as it helps with helping reset the view with a 2d mouse.
@@allenl9214 lol
im about to learn blender and i think i will get me one... i think using it from the start is a good idea..
definitely quite useful in Blender
My work revolves around short cuts, this seems like would slow me down honestly
The smaller one could purely be use for rotation, whereas the larger models have plenty of capabilities for setting up shortcuts, but it is time and effort
For me i guess that those buttons are not enough to cover all the shortcuts i use (from 7 different softwares). Not worth to me if the only benefit is a smooth 3D space manipulation. I need to be precise and fast, not to seam cool doing it.
@@lorenzomanini1017 You program these buttons for each of your software separately. The device recognize the software you work with and set assigned buttons automatically.
I love the space mouse and I totally agree with you
Good to hear :)
awesome ... vverrryy useful video!!!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Do you find it useful when drawing in 2D?
Not as much as in 3d, but if needing to zoom quite far out and then zoom back into another area that would require a lot of scroll-zoom and panning, it does help
much enjoyed your video,
I have used 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse Pro for years with Sketchup and I've enjoyed it with Blender on Windows yet on my Mac Pro Blender 2.9 does not work properly.
Very helpful. Thanks! :-)
Glad it was helpful!

Thank you very much Sir.
Happy to help :)
I have only used it with Maya very briefly. I imagine the 3d motion should work quite well
