The Problem With Making Autism Videos On YouTube

  • As an autistic person talking about autism on youtube. It is truly an honour and humbling to see you gain any of value from me sharing my experiences. But as a UA-camr, as a content creator, there are challenges to talking about autism that I wanted to share with you. This is really to show you that I genuinely care about the autism community and want to talk about my autism experiences in a way that is right for me & for you watching.
    Firstly, I do not try to represent all autistic person in my videos. I will give you context about different aspects of what it CAN be like being autistic as a generalisation. But when making autism videos, I firstly think about representing my side of autism. Because I can't speak of every person with autism and what they feel, see, hear etc. I try to be inclusive but it is impossible to accurately give you a view of the whole spectrum because we are all so different you know.
    The second problem with making autism videos on UA-cam is the idea that I don't want to be seen as someone who is autistic who just talks about autism all of the time. This is obviously all I do with this channel but that is because of the way UA-cam works. Channels on UA-cam grow better when they are sticking to one niche and mine is discussing autism. Now I decided to do this because I felt good about helping others & I feel like I can be myself online which is truly amazing. So really I don't feel that autism defines me is really point here.
    Another issue with autism videos for me is the idea of being an autism advocate. To me, advocacy of anything kind is important and I fully support those who are raising their voices for causes they are passionate about. For me I am passionate about autism and wanting others to understand what it is like. But I do not feel comfortable with the title of advocate is right for me.
    These are some of my problems with making autism videos but I hope that you get a better understanding of my thought process & that this is something I do love doing and care about.

      It wouldn't be Autism if you could represent everybody =D It's such a varied spectrum of symptoms that it's practically impossible. And anyone expecting you to represent everybody doesn't understand that such a thing is simply too big a task. Good on you for doing what you can, that's the important thing.

      I love what you do, it's very helpful! I think every person has a right to share what they personally deal with, it helps them and it helps people who watch them.
      The only time I personally have a bit of an issue is all these "autism families" on UA-cam. Not all are the same, of course, but it feels like so many are just complaining about their kids. Also, I feel like the kid should decide if they want their life/disability/challenges/embarrassing moments shared with the world? I dont know lol.
      But I love your stuff, its amazing. I don't understand why some people think that their voice is louder than the creator. Like, no. They are viewers. You are the creator. It's 100% up to you what you do with your channel! 😂
      And you're doing great, so thank you!

    • @IndieAndy
      @IndieAndy  4 роки тому

      Aww thank you Drew! Totally agree with you, it's up to the creators. Of course we also need to listen to our audiences as I feel both work hand in hand you know.
      Ooh now I think complaining about their kids is very common in all families regardless of whether there kid is autistic. But I do think that some autism families just try to show what their normal is... I don't agree with the way some autism families run their channels especially when it comes to exploiting their kids because of their disability etc.
      Really happy to see you sharing your voice and your thoughts on this so thank you for your time, I really appreciate it!

    Autism is a spectrum.
    It would be impossible to represent the entire spectrum as an individual because we are exactly that... individual! 😊
    I think the people who feel a channel is lacking in something or a certain area, should go ahead and make their own channel and spread awareness.
    Never change who you are or change what you like to do because of anyone else. Be a leader and not a follower.
    You're fast becoming my favourite channel and that's because you're doing your own thing and being yourself. ☺ Its inspirational.
    Ignore the ignorant.
    The funny thing about common sense is that it's not very common 😉
    Also, I really need that t-shirt! That shirt is my life right now haha 😎

      Aww don't think I would be much of a leader in anything tbh 😂 but no thank you so much Katie, I'm just happy that you are enjoying what I'm doing! Haha that t-shirt is me all of the time 😂 Nah it's Shane Dawson merch. It's just so me 👍

    Thank you for doing a video on this topic. It is very important to realize that autism is a huge spectrum and that everyone is an individual and unique in some way, despite all having autism.
    I think you do a wonderful job creating videos that allows people to be open to expressing their own experiences and views. I know you are the first person that I felt comfortable enough to talk about autism with, so I really appreciate all that you do and your kind words of encouragement and suggestions within your videos.

    At the risk of sounding harsh, if people don't like what you do they should watch something else!
    I have watched all your videos and the personal element of your channel is obvious and it is very unreasonable for grumblers to expect you to address their particular need when the autistic spectrum consists of individuals with their own stories.
    I am grandmother of a wonderful autistic 5 year old and your videos have given me so much hope for the future and I am forever grateful for that. Keep doing what you do and how you are doing it. I am sure you have helped many more people than just me😊

Like I say in the video, I do try to help when I can but sometimes it's not enough. But it doesn't mean I can't try you know.
      You've watched all of them?? Oh my gosh! That must have taken you a long time. Thank you so much for your kind words & I am happy that what I try to do helps you in someway. (I had one tell me to just quit UA-cam-there's too many of my niche. lol I'm still here and doing what I'm doing as I can. haha) I could keep going and add so many points- haha line by line on your vid, but I won't lol. I watch videos like yours to learn about other autistic experiences, because I myself have NO IDEA what other people have experienced, so I have no expectation for other autistics to know and be able to represent the whole spectrum either. After all most of us grew up being the only one, or one of a very small group of autistics. Which is great, because it means that our experiences and views on autism have developed independently, so everyone's accounts are incredibly unique and insightful in a way that only a lifetime of personal, lone discovery of a thing can be.

  • @aspiewithattitude3213

    I enjoy your videos the most because I can relate to your experiences living with autism. It lies in my beliefs that everyone is different.Some people who follow our videos aren't aware we are just doing the thing, not advocating all walks in life for all autism since we aren't university graduates.

  • @RSRobStar
    @RSRobStar 4 роки тому +1

    I totally agree with everything you said in this video and tbh I feel exactly the same! Over the past few years I've learned that everyone on the spectrum, whilst have common traits, are different, have different values and like/dislike different things, and Autism affects everyone in different ways, so it's really hard to speak for everyone on the spectrum.
    I also agree that having Autism doesn't solely define who you are. Everyone has their own passions, interests and values outside of Autism. This is why, even though I may have a larger audience if I did focus more on making Autism related content, I do make a variety of other videos too, such as videos based on Disney and Carpool Karaokes. Great video, you explained yourself really well. 😊

    • @IndieAndy

    I've learned so much about autism from you! Even if they're just your experiences, it still creates awareness by sharing information about certain aspects of autism. Fair valid point you made on point number one - l agree with you that sometimes we can't represent everyone on the spectrum. We should be able to express ourselves and not being able to be jumped on by other people. I've had a few people on some autistic groups as well as the parents.. Yes, we can't please everyone.. We shouldn't have to feel like we're judged and need to be accepted...
    2. I feel that we need to be sure to help others... Some people yes do see the Autism before the person. I get them saying that you shouldn't speak about it especially with my aunt giving it to me. Love talking about autism and mental health with other areas on my channel... I hear you about wanting others to see us. I try and also show my life with travel anxiety, anxiety, social anxiety etc..
    3. Again agree we should be able to feel comfortable with what we want to try n do.
    I believe that we need to create more acceptance or being able to express ourselves somehiw. I still get the flack from my aunt and mum sometimes to what I say and do especially with mum worried that some people may take advantage of me etc. Sorry I lost what I was trying to say here yet I'm sure that you can relate to this somehow.
    Great video Andy. Keep up the good work.

      @@IndieAndy It's mostly learning what traits are common to Autism and finding that I also have many of those traits but didn't realise A, they were an Autistic thing and B, that I even did them. Now I'm more aware really helps navigate the world out there, I do have a tendency to hide from the World but now I'm actually attempting to talk on my videos, it's horrible and I want to run but each one gets a little easier so who knows what I'll be able to do 100 videos from now?

      Ooh totally dude I mean I've done over 100 in the past 2 years and the quality of how I present them as only gone up and up since the first one. I guess it's all about finding that point of what you feel comfortable with while also taking the time to improve things along the way!

      Aww thanks Carola! Yes that is very true but that also confuses me... Why would people assume that videos about autism could be all inclusive of the community then you can't represent a group of Germans? You know what I mean, it just seems silly to me.

    I watch as many of your videos as I can, you've helped me understand myself better, opening my eyes to concepts I'd never have thought of. These people obviously don't understand the principle you and others repeat time and time again: It's a spectrum, we're all different. How on earth can you get into another autistic person's head when the point of what you're trying to demonstrate is how you (and specifically you) think because they don't understand it and so educate them? As always, you are trying to help people (effectively I think) understand us. There is a section of the community that are very bitter, partisan and aggressive in what they think is their defence of those on the spectrum when all it will do is cause division. It will always seem like an uphill struggle because people are scared of anything that is different and will react violently or aggressively because our culture (as in the western world) has told them that this is ok. It's not and slowly we'll move toward a more tolerant and accepting world....and you help with that. As has been mentioned before: The channel is called IndieANDY! If people can't get that concept...well, then there's no helping them. Thank you for you hard work and please keep us informed and laughing. You are doing a brilliant job

    From your first point, it's true that you, me and others can't represent everyone on the spectrum. You would have seen my autistic videos, I had one person who wanted to abolish the test card special effects because he had epilepsy and half a dozen to abolish the music just because they had auditory stimuli and expected me to represent the problems I didn't have.

    • @IndieAndy
      @IndieAndy  5 років тому

      Hmm with that though I think it is something that could be off putting to the viewer. I know you can't please everyone but I feel like it is something to be careful of.
      Take my videos for example, I have music but it's low so it's still audible but it's not overbearing. Also I try to be very neutral with my special effects & finding things which are not too stimulating. I will do things which I will try & if I get lots of comments about it then I'll change it.
      I feel there is a line between being creative but also ruining the viewers experience you know.

    My frustration is with the platform. AutismTuber channels are very niche and the current algo makes it hard on our own to grow our reach. I’m trying to be less click-baity in Season 2 but is not working out. An SEO “expert” told me to deploy weaponized clickbait, add more annoying sound effects and overall make my videos more sensory hostile. Hella no! At the same time, I’m second guessing myself for not taking that advice. The pull of ideology vs, pragmatism

    • @IndieAndy
      @IndieAndy  5 років тому

      Hmm I get that for sure & I also find myself battling with the idea of being more clickbaity. I'll be honest and say that I do try to make my thumbnails/titles clickable but they are always true to what the video is about. Also I agree with you that silly noises in videos are annoying unless they have a need or add something to the video. Yes I feel it is hard to grow in the niche... BUT I feel it's hard to grow in general. I honestly just concentrate on what I'm doing & that's that honestly!
