I was ok with the new tuner buttons until I heard Paul say they improved the midrange. Then my marketing BS radar went off!
Tone plastic is a thing. Ask Jack White
I hate that I have to ask if you're joking haha
Please tell me this is a real quote 😂
@@neilpatrickhairlesshe purposely picked those guitars because they looked cool AND played/sounded like shit.
Now, Dan Armstrong can tell you about some tone plastic.
@@peachmelba1000 no joke. Paul said it in a video on the PRS UA-cam channel yesterday.
I love how Paul, with a straight face, can try and convince us that these plastic tuning pegs are his gift to us in order to help with the midrange... There needs to be someone at that company with the ability to say, "Paul. This is absolute BS. Knock it off."
I assume people that would do that no longer work at PRS.
If it is an upgrade going from the metal tuning pegs to plastic pegs, it would take some amazing ears to even hear the difference. I prefer the metal ones anyway. If it's a dream for Paul to finally have these tuning pegs on his guitars, then that's a dream come true for him, one of many, but the look of these just throw me off. They look big/awkward. They can always be replaced if they bother anyone that much
@@LuisMorales-xr1gm Yeah, they can be replaced, but it's more $$ on top of $3500 or so.
@@Scott__C for sure..I'm just saying for me, even tho I don't like the new tuner buttons, if I wanted the guitar bad enough, id swap out the tuners
@@LuisMorales-xr1gm Yeah, but I'd probably just buy a used one already how I want it.
I love PRS guitars. I own several. With that being said, is a company really trying to convince me that switching from metal to plastic tuning keys is an upgrade? Not the best move, in my opinion.
but they match! the metal ones didnt match any of the other metal on the guitar!
It's going back to how they used to be, right? I have a 2001 custom 24 and the pegs on that seem to be the same material, but black. They feel pretty nice too.
Especially with the lame "if the weight is better distributed, the tone or sustain will be better" video they released. I don't think anyone will be asking to buy a set to put on their old PRS Guitars.
These look really similar to the ones on my '19 core DGT, material wise anyway. I don't mind them on my DGT, but the shape of the new ones does put me off.
Agreed. PRS is known for offering premium quality and premium aesthetics. These new tuners look cheap. Honestly, it's surprising they would do this.
The neat freak in me loves that you put stuff away as soon as you're done with it. :)
Absolutely love the format you have now. The workshop bench top reviews. All the measurements the nerdy stuff. Love it!
This guitar is basically the limited run Brushstroke 24 from 2014. It was a limited edition Paul’s guitar with 24 frets instead of 22, and a trem instead of a single piece stop tail bridge. Pretty cool!
Cost saving measure sold as an upgrade. The plastic tuners on my silver sky were one of the things that made it feel cheap. Their traditional tuner knobs are one of the things that's uniquely them. DNA level as far as Im concerned. They feel quality. I hope this isn't going across the range.
I ordered mine in the Blue 10 top, its my dream / bucket list guitar, its for my 50th! I'm so exited, ZZOUNDS shipped it, I should have it by Tuesday!
Dude, your guitar playing on these has gotten outstanding. Each riff you play sounds perfect for the pickup you're showing. Super cool.
Super nice playing Phillip!!!!! This guitar sounds amazing and I think it is in love with you. 👏🏻😎
Thanks a lot Phil! Now I may have to update my PRS Core collection with this guitar. Of course I love the purple color, or if they have the fire red I may pull the trigger and get one. Love the deep drive and seeing if the guitar is worth it. Great job!
- Knock, knock.
- Who's there?
- Who.
- Who Who?
- You sound like a 24th fret inlay bird of a PRS guitar.
My first time here. Excellent production on every level. The calm presentation is much appreciated. The guitar sounded great, the playing was appropriate. and the pacing was right - nothing was too belaboured or over the top.
Yes, I can see the inability to swap out pickups might be an issue, though with this guitar sounding that good - and so many guitarists having additional models, too - that shouldn't be a serious issue. Thank you.
Nice guitar and great review as always. Thanks Phill 👍✌️
When you were checking for dead spots and the banjo music came on it took a good couple of seconds to realize that wasn't you playing sped up. Lol. Great overview of a guitar I'll never own.
Your playing has really improved! Great sounding guitar.
Those pickups sound incredible. Right up there with the 58/15 LT for my current favorites.
Very versatile in terms of tones it seems. I was really impressed with the Single Coil sounds you demonstrated. The HH configs just sound outstanding.
Gorgeous colour and finish! Great sounding too and I really dig the single coil sounds....very unique voice. Let me try the black plastic tuners and put the matching pickup rings on this one please.
Great video & playing, Phil! Cheers
Thank you for the show tonight Phil it was great
Super demo Phillip, keep them coming.
These pickups are the ones in the discontinued 408, they had the best PRS coil-split, they did not drop volume at all compared to other PRS models. I have two 408s because of this great fact! Good to see them put them in the latest customs! 👍👍
Thanks Phil. I love your videos. Gorgeous looking and sounding PRS. I like the PRS coil split sounds. Unfortunately it’s out of my price comfort zone so I’ll have to keep playing my PRS S2 and SE guitars for now.
NICE shop, Phil! Very professional grade!
I’m now the happy owner of this very guitar that I bought “used” from a dealer. It was built in 2023 and it is indeed the same guitar as on the Sweetwater order page. I 100% disagree about the darker stain area on the top being unacceptable and it’s not “black” at all in my possibly better lighting or indeed in sunlight, it’s dark purple. Regardless, the guitar is stunning and I got a big discount. Thanks for the free checkup Phillip! It’s a fantastic guitar!!!
Love you doing more workshop vids! Thanks!
Just noticed the db meter. Dig your vids. Have 2 prs cores a Brent Mason and a Tremonti plus1 s2 vela. Have a lovely year Phil you are my must watch channel.
Bought my first PRS guitar 3 weeks ago. An SE Pauls Guitar in Black Gold. The TCI pick ups sold it for me. The reduced drop in volume when switching to single coils was important to me. Typically I'm a "Thin Pattern" neck kind of guy (G&Ls with skinny necks = .820-.870) but this one felt right. Put those TCIs in a CE 24 with the bolt on Maple neck and I'll buy another PRS. Considered the Swamp Ash Special but recoiled at the inability to select the Single coil middle PUP alone as well as the weight(I am getting older after all...) Can't imagine ever selling this Paul's guitar, even though it's an SE.
Man! I have A couple awesome guitars, and old Le Paul and an old Stratocaster which I play through a wet/dry amp configuration, an old Baseman and an old Marshall. I know what good sound sounds like right away. That PRS and that amp set up your playing through sounds awesome. It's making rethink about growing my collection one more time...
I like my PRS SE Paul's Guitar. Very comfortable to play and sounds good using my old Traynor Amp.
Damn, that guitar sounds great. Very good and thorough presentation, sir.
I like the blue grass jingle while testing for dead spots
The banjo music during the "dead spot" test cracks me up! I love the TCI Pickups. I'd never change them out. I'm not sure how the "higher gain" players would like them compared to the 85-15's. Aren't those a little hotter? I don't mind the shape of the new tuning machine buttons, but I do think that they look a little on the large size. Maybe it's the light color making them stand out too...
That clean neck bucker tone is pretty much the tone I’ve been chasing since I started playing guitar.
? wow! You’re sounding great ! I like the way you play that guitar ❤
Thanks Phil! Great video!!
Phillip i just want you to know that you make my life better. Anytime I watch you I get a hit of dopamine. Passion filled educational content from a man who knows what he is talking about. Thank you for all you do for the guitar community. Much love from Ireland ❤
Well said and agreed. Cheers
Cringe
I love the banjo/dead spot music!
Great video and I am sure it's been said before but what a great idea to check frets using a pair of nylon stockings!
What I like the most about the video is the excellent tone for the volume (
Phil, I enjoy watching this kind of video. Deep dive of unobtainable guitar is what I always want to see regardless I like the guitar or not.
Sounds great Phil !
Absolutely love this model PRS.
Lighter weight buttons it seems? I don’t mind em more wing span like a bird indeed 😮 but shocking changes?
Not sure if I’d go that far but I know this is UA-cam. Always informative Phillip.
Been a long time since I’ve chimed in. Hope that’s ok. Happy New Year!!🎉 What a gorgeous finish!!
So just out of curiosity now I took the aluminum buttons off my core PRS and weighed them - 30 grams or a little over 1oz. Not a lot but more than I would have guessed. And not insignificant with the trend to weigh guitars and choose light ones. I’d recon the plastic ones are probably 1/4 to 1/3rd the weight
Hey Phil! Love your videos and all the great info you get out to the community. Did you trade your Black Cat in for that Jet Black? Love to hear your thoughts on the Jet Black ....Thanks!
I didn't like this update, I generally don't like the narrower field of the TCI pickups, they make this 24 fret guitar sound like what I don't like about 22 fret HH guitars.
However I do like the fact that it offers something truly different to the Custom 24 experience rather than just another way to split your pickups :)
I think the ergonomics of the flush seated and somewhat rounded pickups adds to the asthetics, without the annoyance of strings catching on the underside edge of the pickup.
Great review! I like how neat your workshop is too. Absolutely beautiful guitars! If I could, I would get one with a light purple/dark purple quilted top. Unfortunately as a nurse I could never afford one. Guess I'll keep dreaming.
That thing sounds stellar Phil.
Do you know if i can buy the pickups and the pots, wiring etc to transplant into a different PRS ?
Cheers from NZ 😎🎸🤘
Sounds really smooth
That driven bridge pickup sounds incredible
Phil, you're playing great these days! It's obvious you've been practicing.
~Phil in New Mexico
The new tuning keys look big!
I think the new TCI pickups look really nice but I've always wished that the Custom 24 models came with a satin neck but the TCI pickups would be really nice on the CE24 guitars as well
That would probably lead to a price increase since it's a set neck doing 2 kinds of finishes takes a lot of time. I know kiesel is starting to upcharge for gloss to offset the labor costs of the extra buffing
@daniellowry660 yea I have 1 carvin and 1 kiesel, and I love the tung oil necks they do but was always co fused why for set neck and bolt on the tong oil is free but gloss/satin is 200
@@the_armada5579 I think it's because of the buffing process. It takes more time which means higher labor costs
Thank you for the way you’re doing the measurements now, I appreciate you doing MM and .000”
The banjo thing is hilarious!😆
That sounds killer, very full sound
My Fender Lead III has similar switching. Love it.
The banjo overdub was on point.
Regarding the uniquely shaped pickups: I’m generally one who is always considering modding my guitars. But my PRS (a SE CE 24) is the one guitar where the only mod I plan is to upgrade to the PRS locking tuners. Where my Fenders/Squiers feel to me like they exist to be modded and aren’t complete until I make them my own, the PRS-for me-feels like a cohesive whole that would lose something if modded.
I remember playing a custom 22 in 2014, that was an amazing guitar.
Sounds great to me. I suppose it's all about preference. Loved the cleans especially (important to me, maybe not others).
Thanks for the awesome video and demo!
The cavity shielding surprised me. Paul kept saying about how it robs tone.
None of my core PRSs have the shielding and they are considerably more buzzy vs my CS Strat with shielding.
What do you think?
Inconsistent i guess, i bring this issue up tp prs care last time, they said in most playing situation shielded are unnecessary. Now its bummer they start shielding it again.
Thanks Phil, PRS always make good Guitars, great review. PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
I like the sound on this model much better than some of their others. More pleasing ear sound to me. Usually they are too bright for me. This one I like!
I like that little "suction cup" gizmo used to remove the back plate. Wondering why I never thought of that.
The guitar sounds really good, but let's give that Bad Cat some credit too!
You sound good tonight Phil !!😉
I have the original Paul's Guitar pickups from before the TCI revision for 2019. They're my favorite passive pickups on any guitar I own.
I own many PRS guitars and have yet to be disappointed. This Custom 24-08 is interesting because it has the TCI pickups that I like very much, the switching from the Paul’s Guitar but has the vibrato which is not on the Paul’s Guitar. It is my opinion that the PRS vibrato is the easiest to use as Jeff Beck did, without having to cut the arm. I’ve seen the video about the “sound improvements” brought by the new tuning machines, and am rather sceptical that they will make an audible difference. I will certainly want to try one out, but the 2024 releases make me think of Fender, same as the last one with a different colour and some lipstick. Thanks for the video Phil, I sincerely appreciate your hard work.
the best feeling and looking buttons or PRS guitars were the rosewood or ebony ones, they looked great, felt amazing to the fingers and functioned well
That purple flame top is 🔥 🍇
Paul's video about the tuners includes that they impact the tone. That really is pushing it for me. I get the weight saving but actual noticeable tone? That is snake oil.
I was half asleep at 6:55 and that really effed with my head 🤣
Love the "Paul's" pickups. It also makes perfect sense to put these pickups in the 24-08, while the Custom 24 retains the normal set of 85-15s. Tuner buttons look great to me, though given the option I'd always go metal over plastic \m/ :D BTW, that black "blotch" in the finish is simply the way the wood absorbed the stain; each piece of wood will absorb stains its own way-- as demonstrated by this example; I wouldn't give that a second thought~
Hey Phil I love your videos but on Prs Guitars the fret heigth is more like 1.09 mm. With the stewmac caliper you need to substract your 0.91 mm to the distance of 2mm which will gave you 1.09mm. Hope I am right with this and tanks again for your awesome channel!
Played acoustically, that PRS has a better banjo tone than a, um, a real banjo. Paul is stepping up his game!
Brutal looking tuning keys imo
The switching is cool
I really like the NF pickups on my PRS Studio (plus the great 58/15 LT bridge). If PRS wanted to "upgrade" the tuner buttons to save weight, should have gone titanium rather than plastic.
Guitar sounds unbelievable
Wow, that thing sounds good!
Nice purple top!
I like the new keys look.
So what’s next for PRS? Distressed finishes or hard relic??
FWIW I have an '02 Melody Maker with the original Kluson style tuners.
The plastic buttons on those haven't shown the slightest sign of failure, and the ones I have seen break are the very old ones that likely had been made of nitro, hence it shrinking & cracking over time.
Wow, agree Phil, the Paul's pickups sounds the nicest, 24-08 most versatile and pattern thin neck and purple? Dream specs
That's really interesting. Honestly, I had never looked up close at a 24/08 before, I'm more of a 594 type. I was so impressed with those pups I bought a set of Maryland 85/15 LT pups. I have had a few discussions around Core Vs SE. I'm not real concerned about looks. Tuner button material, if it works well and lasts, whatever. I want an instrument that I can play 2 gigs on the same day with, holds up with no problems, and is just as comfortable at the end of the second one as it was at the start of the first one, and I like it just as much. My ES335 does that. I'm not sure an SE (out of the box) would do that. There is a reason they are $4600-ish, they could make them for less. I think they said in this years 'fireside chat' that 66% of their net in 2023 was SE guitars. That's great! More people playing the instrument we love is a very good thing!! Sorry if this was too long, and rant-ish. Thanks for reading! 8) --gary
I quite like the black spot in the finish. I'm not such a fan of PRS finishes in general (too gaudy or something) but I really like this one. I really can't afford it though...
Hello, how would you compare the sound of this guitars neck position vs the paul's. Since they're the same humbucker it would be interesting to see/ear the difference that 2 extra frets make.
Ya , I don’t see too many of these in the wild. Some people I knew who owned nicer PRS didn’t bring them out. Really too expensive for my pocket book. But I did love the sound of it. I did have a PRS custom 24 SE. I never bonded with it and I was happy to sell it.
I love prs single coil sounds. They sound very convincing
Interesting that they decided to go with the plastic tuning keys, when that was the main complaint with the silver sky.
I personally like that PRS is trying something different. If I'm going to spend $4500 on a guitar I want it to be unique. Thanks for the video, Phil!
I love my PRS core . In the 2 years of ownership I played it maybe 15 times. I play my S2 every day. The core is a pristine perfect guitar. It sounds perfect. However playing it can feel like sketching on a work of art. My S2 is a working guitar it a grinder that demands to be played hard. These are my feelings. It’s the most I ever played for guitar. Watching this demo reminds me that Cores are luxury items the detail and pricing speak exclusivity but maybe further removed from practicality. Beautiful playing and a beautiful instrument
Love the banjo tone of this guitar 😂
I would have not noticed the change until I tuned that guitar. Why people make a big deal about looks of it is odd. I don’t notice any bad changes.
I just purchased a new Modern Eagle V Ten Top (it has the older tuners on it, as it is a 23 model as the Charcoal Cherry Burst that I purchased is now discontinued on the PRS website). BTW, I absolutely love the color and the guitar. I got a nice discount from Music and Art (a division of Guitar Center) and shipping was free. All told I paid $4960 after tax.
I wish my playing condoned a 4600 guutar, lol. My highest is a grand, and i always pick up a cheepy, so i dont ding it, lol
