Just finished putting a XI 3 on my PA 14 and getting ready to mount one on my compass. This helps a lot
Did you end up doing it for the compass?
@@cloutmaster965 not yet. Looking at another PA 14 and if I get it, I’ll mount the trolling motor on it instead of the compass
that is a LOT of work! Looking forward to the field test video!
So stoked you did this! Can’t wait to see it in action Monday!! Good stuff bro
Thank you for posting a bow mount version! I haven't found one until now!
No problem, I know exactly how you feel, I was stressing out trying to find a solution for my outback.
Rock on Dude! Great job. The flip flops 🩴 and socks combo rules
Great work! Thanks for sharing!
Great install cheethoe! Spot lock is a game changer. I would love to have this setup on my Solo Skiff.
Thanks man, I need to find some time to try it out in Redondo
@@cheethoe How did it performed in Redondo?
Looks hella good !
Nice job! That's going to be a game changer on the water. I've been thinking about getting something with spot lock for a while, because that is by far the most annoying/challenging part of kayak fishing in Oklahoma...trying to hold still in the wind.
Thanks Chris, I've taken it out on the water twice so far, it's held me in place in 15-20mph winds. I'm pretty happy with it. One thing i have to get used to is that in these conditions it's going to point the front of my kayak into the wind, which makes sense. But sometimes I'm trying to fish what's behind me so I have to adjust how I approach things and make decisions on when it makes sense to spot lot and when it doesn't make sense.
Thanks great video I’d like to do the same when you pull the motor up does it interfere at all with the peddle drive?
Nope doesn't interfere as long as the shaft is 36" like mine is. I bought the 48" motor but had it cut down to 36".
How does it handle in choppy conditions offshore? I just added one to my outback but a bit nervous to go offshore with it. Mostly concerned about too much weight being up front.
You'll get water over the bow most likely if it's really choppy conditions. The slower you go, the less you'll get. Just try to counter balance your battery and gear in the back. Hopefully you're not going out in small craft advisory conditions. Also I've only ever beach launched and landed with it from protected beaches, not sure where you launch from.
Either way, I've been in pretty choppy conditions, it can get wet, but if you're trying to stay over a waypoint in those conditions, it's golden. Just remember then head portion of the motor is not water tight (the portion on top of the shaft), so if you're in super wet conditions just have it slightly raised so it's not getting too wet. The body of the motor is fine.
That's freaking cool. Well done. How much weight did that add to the bow of your yak?
Adds about 31lbs to the bow, but i'm moving my battery box out of the front hatch to behind my seat which was 18lbs
What's the black plastic piece for the mold that you use?
3/4inch starboard. I'm sure you could use any hdpe of similar thickness
What size amp battery is that? Have you used it for all day fishing yet? Thanks
I was using a 55Ah battery and yeah I've used it all day no problem. Obviously I wasn't running 100% all day but lots of spot locking and using it to motor between sections of lakes and harbors. I've since switched to a 100Ah battery just for piece of mind
Well done mate! Looks like you are the only one that has made a video on this. Have you noticed any structural issues ie. cracking on the mounting mounts.?
Also did you consider mounting on the rear of the outback using the existing trolling motor screw/mount points.?
Thanks! No structural issues yet, the starboard is holding up fine. I've checked the inside of the hull for cracks but it looks like the aluminum plates I installed are spreading the load well and there are no signs of any cracks/stress there. I also used the built in threads in the front which originally was used for the handle so that was already designed to handle load.
@@cheethoe thanks mate for the quick response. All the best.
Hobie OB's front is low already, i think in a calm river/lake it's ok but if waves gets rough, it's going to be one wet ride in the front :). Also doesn't the motor somewhat get in the way of your fishing rod?
In my last video at Cambria, my kill bag on the bow was about as heavy as that trolling motor (after filling it with Ling, rockfish and my ice packs) and I was even able to do a beach landing just fine with that weight. I guess we'll see eventually, I've taken it out in the ocean but I haven't had any really rough waters with it out there yet .
As for getting in the way of my fishing rod, I definitely have to lift my rod over, but if I really wanted, I could adjust things so the head of the motor sits even lower. I think overall the benefits outweigh any inconvenience.
I've already fished with it a few times in lakes and outside the break wall of MDR, it's a game changer.
@@cheethoe I know having a motor is a game changer, that I agree with. My NK-180S is mounted on the back of my OB so it's out of the way. If I was to go with your motor and have it front mounted then the thing that would convince me is the spot lock feature which is really nice to have.
I just took it out the other day on a lake with 22-25mph winds and really choppy water. It was definitely a really wet ride when I was going around 4mph, but when I slowed down to around 2.5 - 3mph it was relatively dry.
That NK-180S looks cool, I was really excited that Newport Vessels released a cheaper competitor to bixpy/torqeedo
Can you provide links to the anderson weather boot covers you used? Thank you
you need one of each for the connection powerwerx.com/anderson-36055p2-sb50-environmental-boot-source

I've read bow mounting a xi3 to a Hobie Outback (2019 or newer) makes the front of the kayak too heavy, especially in rough waters. It looks like you were successful though and are fishing the ocean near shore (like I plan to do). HAve you found any negatives of having that much weight in the front of the kayak? Does it make the kayak hard to pedal when the motor is off and deployed.
Doesn't make it hard to pedal. In really choppy waters you definitely get water coming over the bow if you're going fast, but if you slow down it's fine. Generally though, out in the ocean it's no problem. The only time I had water really coming over a lot in the ocean was during small craft advisory conditions.
@@cheethoe Thanks for the information
Great install mate! But it does look like a lot of work. I wish I could pay you to set one up for me. How long did it take you to do everything? Thanks for your help.
Hah, I wish I could have paid someone to set one up for me too. Honestly I think I did everything in 3 separate days. First day I created the paper template and then created the styrofoam template. Second day I created the mount from starboard. The third day I did all the wiring. The two hardest parts in my opinion was coming up with the idea of how I was gonna secure the starboard to the kayak, and second was lining up the mounting holes in the starboard with the screw holes for the front eyelet on the outback.
I just made this video so someone else who wanted to put in the work wouldn't have to figure everything out from scratch like I did.
@@cheethoe many thanks for your detailed response. I did imagine it would take a bit of time. Your skills are top notch and you have a good eye for this type of job, plus all the tools :). I want to have the electric option for my 2018 Hobie OB as well, but I'm having trouble deciding between the Bixpy which is very easy and convenient to use but obviously expensive, other option is possibly the new Haswing Hobie cassette with a lithium battery which is cheaper but not sure I want to sacrifice the mirage drive. Bixpy I could mount it on the rudder. Last likely option could be yours. Just would have to find right person to do it as I unfortunately can't.
@@cheethoe i fogot to ask you something important. Is it possible to remove the electric motor after each trip? As in just unscrew it? It's just that I car top my Hobie and I have it on a hoist so keeping it on wouldn't work unfortunately.
Please help . How thick was the star board you used? I’m trying to do the same for hobie passport . Passport is rated 325 weight capacity .. yours is 425.. since the weight of xi3 is around 40 pounds you think my kayak can handle it on the front bow ?
I use 3/4" Starboard. I think it'll work for the passport in terms of weight. Just put your battery behind your seat and your body weight and the battery will help counterbalance it.
Did your nose dive ? I wish I can get help …how much does the motor weight ?
Where did you find the black polymer plate at?
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00S1KOPUM
How did you secure your battery bow behind the seat
I just route the hobie bungies through the handle of my battery case.
WTH!!! haha descent troll motor...I just went with a bixby on mine a few months ago. with an extra $120 the foot adapter is literally plug and play. no install . just charge battery and you have about 6-7 hours on a slow to moderate troll or 3-4 hours on full speed. full speed is about 5mphs
If it weren't for all the GPS features of my trolling motor I probably would have went with the bixpy/torqueedo knock off from Newport Vessels.
What size bolt is the pad eye handle? Metric?
It was M5, I can't remember if it was 0.8mm thread or 1mm thread though. I just unscrewed it and took the bolt to my local hardware store to compare.
@@cheethoe thanks
How is it holding up ?
Holding up just fine, it's very sturdy, haven't need to do any adjustments.
Another project...oh ya
Need to check out my motorguide xi3 video before you go drilling holes in your kayaks and putting pulleys and all that, no drilling needed
