Nice outing, how long does it take you to get out to the breakway?
Mom wake the fuck up Cheethoe posted!!!
Which rod and reel are u using?
Rod I built myself, but it's a 7'2" Medium Heavy, Fast action blank with lots of backbone. The reel is a shimano curado 151HG, great reel, super smooth but the saltwater definitely messes it up. I keep spare bearings at home and service it often.
@@cheethoe would a medium light rod suffice?
@@Anythingandeverything1111 you can use just about any rating rod really, a medium light would only be a problem if you had a heavy hook to drive into the fish or if you're trying to pull them away from structure.
Hey buddy, hope all goes well with your family!! Thanks for your fishing update. If possible can you please share what type of shoe or boots you use for your kayak launch. Do these get wet or water proof? Also, can you make a short video on what type of rods and reels do you prefer for salt water kayak fishing. Thanks and wishing you the best
Thanks for the well wishes. The boots I'm using are NRS boundary boots, they are waterproof and amazing, but they are like $120 bucks, which to me is expensive. For reels, I'm probably the worst person to take advice on, I'm using mostly freshwater Shimano SLX or Curado and I'm constantly servicing them at home because they get soo corroded and locked up. I buy bearings in bulk to replace them. Rods I build my own rods these days, but in general I use a 7'2" MH fast action blank with lots of backbone. For lighter baits I use a BFS setup, shimano zodias BFS rod paired with the shimano curado bfs reel with 10lb braid and anywhere from 8 - 15lb flouro leader. For my swimbaits I build my own rod, but it's an 8' Mag Heavy rated for 2-8oz, moderate fast action. And I pair that with a shimano Tranx 301, 65lb braid and 20lb flouro leader.
Nice to see you back! Are you swapping out the TM or do you have one for each kayak?
Thanks man, I hope you've still been fishing! For the TM I just swap back and forth between the two kayaks.
Awesome catches!!!
Thanks!
Old town 😮 welcome back nice approach
Yeah my old town was my "buddy" kayak I reserved for friends. I decided to start using it for all my saltwater trips.
nice, man. didn't realize you're no longer riding a Hobie?
My Hobie is my freshwater ride, my old town is my saltwater ride. I get my Hobie tagged by the local lakes so I can't use it in between freshwater trips.
@@cheethoe i see. generally speaking, which ride do you like better?
@@honeybadgervoodoooutdoors7305 Yeah they both have their pluses and minuses. I like the Old town because the hull seems more water tight and I can move the seat waaaay back so I have more space up front. But the rudder kind of sucks and there's a major lack of rails and storage areas up front. The transducer install area sucks too. Also for car topping the hull shape makes it super hard to get it on top of my car. Generally I prefer my hobie, everything is way better thought out, lots of storage areas, lots for rails, good rudder, the loader accessory, guardian plate for the transducer.
nice vid cheethoe. nice catches. ive tried MDR (on foot) but can't seem to find the juice
thanks man, I just try to keep my bait in the strike zone as long as possible with each cast, in the case of foot patrol at MDR it's as close to structure so my bait is always swimming along structure, be it pilings, docks, boats, the bottom, or the rocks along the wall.
Are these spotted bass not any good? Doesnt seem like anyone on UA-cam takes them home to eat.
Honestly I've never tried eating them. I've had calico and sand bass and didn't particularly like them so never really wanted to try spotties. People claim they are mushy but I think most people that say that haven't actually tried it either. Most of us do catch and release to keep the population up for sport.
@@cheethoe Interesting. Would love to try some just to see how it tastes. I'm not a fan of Large Mouth Bass due to the fishiness. However, you would think a saltwater fish would taste better.
good to see you out and about!
I'm still out there, just not as often or for as long. I'm hoping that changes soon.
Missed the videos bud. Glad to see you’re back at it
Thanks man!
watching this in 2024 that first cast catch was sick
Spark Shad Slayer!
Another great day fishing!!! I’ve been out on kayak there at MDR, and I’ve been skunked 3 out of 3. 😥
what are you throwing and where are you throwing it?
@@cheethoe From launch ramp, at the boat docks, all the way to breakwall and nothing. I’ve tried dropper loop with squid and shrimp. I’ve tried plastics, bucktails, and even a Rat-L lure.
@@jerryavila2900 if you want to break the skunk, get either a 1/4oz hookup bait (color doesn't matter) or a 15-20gram slow pitch jig, and just go to each dock piling and drop it on either side of each piling in free spool. Let it hit bottom and raise your rod and let it drop back down a couple times and move on. It's almost a guaranteed bite.
@@cheethoe Thank you!!! I will give that a try!!!
Go get’em Cheethoe!!!
Welcome back im happy to see a new fishing video of your let go fishing 🎣👍🏼
Thanks, I'll probably drop a saltwater kayak video later this week too.
@@cheethoe your very welcome 🎣👍🏼
The legend is back
lol, no legends here. 😅
What camera do you use and what pound line and hook ?
I'm using a GoPro Hero 9 and a Hero 11. I use 17 - 20lb Flourocarbon. For the 4" baits I'm using a 3/0 owner flashy swimmer. For the 5" bait I'm using a 6/0 owner flashy swimmer.
@@cheethoe thank you I’m subscribing to your channel. Hopefully you hit the 1000 subscribers soon.
@@cheethoeenjoying the foot patrol videos. I see you slow roll the flashy swimmer but also bumping it along bottom?
@@ericlikewhoa yeah, particularly when I use the 4" and especially the 5". The bigger the bait, the slower I go to give the bass an opportunity to follow and get a solid bite on it. Otherwise I end up with just tail bites.
There it is!!!! Nice catch!!!
do you fish off the bottom for sheep? you let it sit on the bottom?
@@dunmadun351 yes just letting it sit on bottom
You rock, catching those spotties!!!
Great video!!! Question: Why the gloves? I thought it was just for kayaking, but you’re wearing them on foot patrol??? Are they “fishing gloves?” Thanks
@@jerryavila2900 I sometimes wear them for UV protection while fishing
@@cheethoe I thought of that, but I noticed you were wearing short sleeves. 😊 BTW, where can I get those type gloves? Thanks for your time and your prompt reply!!!
@@jerryavila2900 I also sometimes wear them cause they give a bit of padding when lipping spotties. I got these an Amazon
@@cheethoe Thank you!!!
Hey Cheethoe!!! New subscriber and new to kayak fishing! Enjoying your videos!!!
Hey Cheethoe, new to kayaking. I’ve done two trips so far to MDR. Hopefully I’ll get to meet you some day.
How much is the swimbait looks dope
What swimbait you use at 2:38???
@hiddencityboxing4564 it's the Berkley cull shad, 6"
@@cheethoe thanks bro what’s the price on that?🎣
what length rod do you use in the marina?
7'2" typically
What is the name of the material you cut to make the edge base? 3/4star bord?
yes 3/4" starboard. I made this video years ago before anyone else had made a bow mount for the Hobie Outback, these days you can just buy a trolling motor mount: oneobjectivebf.store/products/bow-mount-trolling-motor-plates?variant=43641951879477
@@cheethoe Hi, thanks for answering. I have a Shearwater 125 Vibe kayak and I can't find the mounting base for my motor, that's why I'm about to make my own.
What terminal tackle did you use? Hook size and line (25#, 30# or 40#?) what else would you take for an island trip?
What kind of rig is this?
I'm using this with a 3.8" Keitech -> 6thsensefishing.com/collections/treble-head
Handing over a baitcaster to a random is wild he really could have left you with the fattest back last and just walked away
Nice video, Cheethoe!!! Great fishing!!! First-time kayaker, was out on my first saltwater fishing trip yesterday 07/08/2024, there at MDR. Several spots you showed. Lots of fun, although I was skunked 😊
If you want a guaranteed bite, grab either a 1/4oz hookup bait (color doesn't matter) or a 15-20gram slow pitch jig (color again doesn't matter), and just drop it by every piling you see. You will get bit. I try not to do that anymore because it gets boring, but it's a good way to get those first bites. Afterwards I'd switch to a paddle tail swimbait and cast it across pilings, let it hit bottom and slow roll it for less but a bit more fun bites.
@@cheethoe Thanks for speedy reply. Can’t wait to get back. I was gifted a pelican RiverGorge tandem kayak, but was solo yesterday. I need to modify a stadium/kayak seat in the middle section for better positioning. Any advice or videos I can watch? Thanks for your time and Tight lines!,,
Try a zoom fluke or a gulp minnow on a 1/2 inch vac boxer jig head. All white for everything.
I've read bow mounting a xi3 to a Hobie Outback (2019 or newer) makes the front of the kayak too heavy, especially in rough waters. It looks like you were successful though and are fishing the ocean near shore (like I plan to do). HAve you found any negatives of having that much weight in the front of the kayak? Does it make the kayak hard to pedal when the motor is off and deployed.
Doesn't make it hard to pedal. In really choppy waters you definitely get water coming over the bow if you're going fast, but if you slow down it's fine. Generally though, out in the ocean it's no problem. The only time I had water really coming over a lot in the ocean was during small craft advisory conditions.
@@cheethoe Thanks for the information
Which state is this?
California
@@cheethoe okay, I've been searching for Barrett lake MN, but all the videos are very obviously not Minnesota! The terrain looked too deserty.
What’s the jig combination you were throwing
I'm throwing a Keitech football jig in a 1/2oz. For the trailer I'm using a yamamoto double tail grub in a plum color. I actually rip off about a 1/4 inch of the body of the grub so it fits right and the hook comes out at the end of the body. I wouldn't get hung up on plum color, i'm sure a green pumpkin would work just fine too. Hell I wouldn't get hung up on a specific trailer either.
Awesome brother, was your reel struggling a little bit? Seemed like it needed service. Just curious is all! Subbed!
Haha, the salt corrodes my bearings man, I actually buy bearings in bulk and service them somewhat regularly myself but I usually wait until the bearings are really bad. I do rinse and dry my reels after every trip but that saltwater is ruthless.
Is this fisherman village in Marina del rey
Nah, this is just the various basins, mainly A through E
No way dude!!! Is it cool if I post that Cast to catch on my Instagram?! Super sick video!
Of course!
Can you help me build one for my gt56? No rotation tho.
Haha, only because you're the homie
Do you have to register your kayak with a trolling motor
Yes you do
@@cheethoe roughly how much if you don't mind me asking
just wondering if you have a reason for preferring the crawfish scent over the shad?
no legitimate reason haha. It's just what I have, I feel like any scent works better than no scent. And it just smells good.
The rod is looking sick!
Hell Yeah dude!!! Man that place looks good I gotta go check it out 🔥🎣
Nice video! You put the wood to them!
I see why you like this one better!! Those damn swimbaits 😂
Damn I wish I had gone there more than once! You got on em!!
It's the socal Disneyland of fishing 🤣
Great Video! I just starting catching decent bass on the jig these past 6 months and I love it.
yeah, the jig is one of the few slow bottom baits I'm willing to throw, just cause you can really set the hook on them and usually you get decent sized bites.
The legend is back
