The problem with Fredo was that he was smart, but he was also weak. He was blinded by ambition in that he wanted what he hadn't earned. Instead of learning from his mentors in Las Vegas, he treated himself to entitlements like fooling around with waitresses who were supposed to be working. Therefore, he threw away the opportunity to prove himself. Michael did earn what he had by paying high prices like the deaths of Apollonia and his daughter. He proved he was smart enough to learn from his father and consult him often.
Vito had the right mentality for a crime boss. Michael lived in fear. He always wanted all his enemies dead. Its never ending. Someone always wants revenge. He couldnt get out. Vito understood this and accepted his fate. He was a peace. Michael was restless.

1. Vito was more a godfather than a businessman. Michael was more a businessman than a godfather. 2. Yes, Michael expanded the family business, but I don’t think he could’ve built the business from scratch like Vito. Certain life experiences at a young age forced one into a level of toughness and courage that became more innate in Vito.
It’s not about who is better because we learned of Vito towards the end of his life. His son Michael displayed a part of the younger version of his father when Vito. They did a excellent job displaying the genes for certain minds in who can understand patterns.
Everyone who took part in 'The Godfather' should be rated as the best actors of all time. Brilliant movie. Brilliant acting. Brilliant directing. Brilliant book. And Brilliant shooting and even the mafia in New York got on board?
I dont think one is better than the other, I think they grew up in different times… Vito - he had to pave the way for his future family to survive/live. He refused to be like others around him and pretty much saved the community or at the very least was a saviour for them. Michael - had to do the same to some extent yes, but had the benefit of already being in a country where he grew up in and to some extent accepted. He was given privileges through his father’s sacrifice and had an example of how to move. We don’t know enough about Vitos own father to know what example Vito had and how they lived as a family, only that he brokered no BS and told the local don to go F himself. Both were great in my opinion.
This is by far one of your best videos. Brilliantly Detailed. Here’s How I would count it. Michael: Intelligence, Ruthlessness, Machiavellian, Art Of War, Fear, Facing Difficulty. Vito: Leadership, Love, Respect, Achievements, Reign, Vision. And As a Tie Breaker, Family-Wealth Category Goes To Don Vito Corleone. As He Held Family Above All.
Vito built his empire during a time when all the other families were also starting from scratch, so there was little to no competition. Judging from no response for Fanucci. Vito knew at the end of his tenure that the other families were looking to take the Corleone territory, and Micheal was going to be tossed in the deep end when he took over, and he was going to sink or swim.
Michael was definitely more viscous and cunning, Vito was smarter in the sense of he could read people very well and could see trouble. They were both perfect for their time and years they were godfathers
Enzo The Baker was the most duplicitous man to ever come out of Sicily. he was the man behind the man behind the man. He wielded absolute power & no one suspected, except maybe Don Vito when he learned of Enzo's mysterious appearance at the hospital. urinating to disgrace your enemy is what might have given him away, he was the essence of old-school. he tipped off Michael to Hyman Roth's plan to kill him. the message was disguised on the birthday cake at the Havana party in an arcane Sicilian code.. Enzo was not there but Roth's inexplicable order to the waiter to show everyone the cake saved Michael.
@@shayadayan3343 Expand? its just made-up bullshit like the movie, its fiction not reality. i think that Clemenza was really a fat ET from Venus & Michael;'s son left the blinds open so he could have his parents killed because they wouldn't let him have ice cream. Don Corleone was Luca Brasi's gay partner & Michael's wife was born a man.
From what I can see, most of the people who are choosing Vito over Michael are doing so based on personal feelings and likeability of the character. Michael was far more cunning, ruthless and ambitious. He was thrown into the trenches out of nowhere, thrown to the lions and he adapted perfectly. He stayed at the top and took the empire to unimaginable heights. Vito had more wisdom and built everything from scratch (even though Clemenza showed him the ropes). People loved him and he was a far better family man. In terms of business however, Michael was an objectively better don than Vito.
Clemenza never had the ability to show him anything are you kidding me. Vito built the empire almost by himself, if you know business this is a much more difficult fit than growing the existing empire. There’s a reason kublai Khan is not as widely known as Ghingis
Sollozzo was correct "Let's face it, with all due respect the Don was slipping. Ten years ago could I have gotten to him?" Crucial mistakes: Complacency - he wasn't properly guarded It was a strategic mistake to refuse Sollozzo - Hagen was right Sending Luca Brasi to pretend to be a turncoat wasn't going to fool anyone - his loyalty to Don Corleone was widely known. Michael wouldn't have made those mistakes
Vito wouldn't have made the mistake of marrying a Gringa like Kay Adams or killing his own brother. The two things that absolutely brought Michael down. Simply by mastering being both Loved and Feared, Vito was by far, the BETTER Don.
@@DanBeech-ht7swBoth died at home in luxury, the difference was Don Vito was more loved. Don Vito was slipping,he should have told Sollazo he would think about it, much better than saying no outright. And Luca Brasi was very loyal to Don Vito,so that was another mistake. Having Fredo drive him was a mistake as well.
Does anyone think Vito used this as a way of getting rid of Luca? Luca was loyal but I think Vito was very wary of him and in that respect used Luca? Just a thought. Vito must have known Lucas story wouldn’t be believed.
@@gatekeepercreative he married Kay because Apollonia died, he realized he talked too much during that time and I think something inside of him died, he didn’t want the mob life, Kay was supposed to be that life that he wanted.
I give the edge to Vito as IMO he was loved and feared. While IMO Michael was feared. I also look at the way they both handled mistakes made by Fredo. Vito was shot 5 times and almost died while under Fredo's "protection" but there is no indication of any resentment by Vito against Fredo. Michael was betrayed by Fredo. However Fredo was duped by Roth and said he did not know Roth would try to kill Michael. Yet Michael could not put the betrayal behind him and forgive Fredo and eventually had him killed. That killing haunted Michael later in life. He would have been better off handling Fredo as Vito did.
Completely different situations. Fredo was vitos son, whilst getting shot was due to incompetence. Whilst fredo in regards to Michael's perspective went against his family not just once twice, the second time being a power play done because of jealousy which also almost ended in Michel being whacked. And if Mike left him alive fredo would've tried again due to feeling 'owed'
As much as I love Michael, I love Vito more & it is really tough to outshine your own father that established the foundation and built the family up, especially for Mike.
Depends. During peacetime I would say Vito by a huge margin. His diplomacy and levelheaded approach to business would be better. Now wartime is another story. Michael is ruthless and military trained. So he was adapt and fully capable of shedding blood to achieve victory.
@@SaddonghusseinWhen they were very low level. Michael had all the other families against him. He faced challenges Vito could not have imagined. He adapted his family’s empire to the modern world. Michael lost a daughter, and Vito lost a son (Sonny).
Vito Corleone is by far the best example of a Godfather. He was both feared and loved by the people around him. He treated everyone with respect no matter what his/her status was. In life, when all is lost, hope is by far the only reason for living. With that, Don Vito was able to offer hope to the hopeless unlike Michael who was ruthless and didn't show enough compassion towards others.
I paused at 1:45 to answer: I think VITO is the right answer because he built it from the ground up and lasted as long as he did. I don’t think Michael could have built what his father built and or got as strong and powerful but with out that head start would he have been a good Don or even a Don at all… makes you think

Totally agree CM with Vito as the winner. Vito did start it all pretty much on his own in a pretty tough environment fraught with pitfalls. Michael had Vito to advise him...a huge and powerful advantage. Michael built upon what Vito initially established but he take some bigger losses. Even though Vito lost his son in a costly war, Michael did lose his family in many ways, something that would have been inconceivable to the don. Vito was much more in touch with everyone being seen as compassionate man, jovial and approachable. He was successful in achieving that very difficult balance of being loved and feared. Michael was feared not so much loved.
Vito made better decisions and was more patient. Michael later took the business to another level yet he was more paranoid about the people around him.
@@corvus3692 Vito knew his enemies better than Mike ever could because of the years he had dealt with them thus him being able to instruct Mike on how to get them all even though he would already be dead
This was an awesome video of analyzing both dons. I had always envisioned Don Vito as being the model for any caporegime. To answer your question at the end, (honestly with my temper), I’d end up being more of a Sonny than a ruthless Michael, a calculating Vito, or a half-wit Fredo. You got to give me SOME CREDIT: I was also born dirt poor, no real parents, I also served in the military, and I have the calculated analysis needed to: strike when needed; meaning I honestly don’t give a $H*T if I have to kill somebody to get my point across. Hence: I’m SONNY!!! RIP: James Caan.
I agree 100%. Vito was more analytical than he gets credit for, most things he learned through trial and error like you say, or watching others. It's all he had.
Let me put it this way: if I had to face one of them, I'd go with Vito. Vito has clear lines he won't cross. Michael doesn't, and regularly does things Vito would be appalled by.
I'd trust and respect Vito more than Michael, Michael is corporate in his thinking. To him I'm an asset,to Vito I would be considered someone valuable and a friend of the Family.
michael was better than vito just as vincent was better than michael but again had vito not prompted michael about the barzini meeting he might not have been able to see a trap there vincent was not featured for long enough to be able to bear a comparision with the 2 dons before him however vincent saved michael's life from joey zasa's helicopter attack
It's not really a debate. In legit business, startup artists often can't run and maintain the exploding size of their new business. Large corporate managers rarely could build the company they control. In this fictional account, it appears they both could startup and maintain. So they are just different and primarily able to adapt to the current situation.
I love how the portrayal of Michael’s character took of the intelligence and patience of Vito, but especially in part II showcased Michael’s weaknesses. The fact that he became less of a family man, even striking Kay crossed the line, in addition to ordering the hit on his own brother Fredo, due his misusing him. Fredo might have been a traitor, but he had to have felt abandoned by the family, which was reflected brilliantly in the 1st movie during the scene with Moe Green when he didn’t even know that Tom was no longer the consigliere, his own father was semi-retired and that Michael had stepped over him as head of the family. No doubt Johnny Ola and Hyman Roth used that to influence him, probably even offering him some fake promises if he helped whack Michael in attempt to destroy the Corleone empire.
We all have biases and are prejudiced so this is all subjective and opinionated. So for instance people who are huge Marlon Brando fans will choose Vito
Michael did everything Sonny wanted to do, but he did it in a more calculated way. Vito made the entire family and grew it to the powerful force it was before Michael took over. Michael had both his father and Sonny in him as they were both dons. Michael is the greater Don because he had everything.
Vito built his empire. He was respected , he ciuld be reasonable or ruthless. Michael inherited the family. He had to prove he had the same tenacity and intelligence as his father . Michael lost a fiancee, his marriage to kay and even fredo who betrayed him- his actions haunting him despite fredos deception

@@Religious_gynecologist Vitos wife never left and insulted him
Micheal imo married the wrong woman had his first wife never been killed I think she would have been perfect for him
The problem with Fredo was that he was smart, but he was also weak.
"He was banging cocktail waitresss!,two at a time! So I had to straighten him out!" Moe Green.
Those cocktail waitresss get you every time....
Vito had the right mentality for a crime boss. Michael lived in fear. He always wanted all his enemies dead. Its never ending. Someone always wants revenge. He couldnt get out. Vito understood this and accepted his fate. He was a peace. Michael was restless.
There are teachers, and there are students. Vito taught his son the basic. Michael took it a step further and cemented his fear up front.
It depends on the personal priorities.
Under Vito, Family flourished.. Under Michael, business flourished.
Under Vito, family AND business flourished. Under Michael, family destroyed, business flourished to new heights.
@@roaldgrimson-d5w that's why I mentioned priorities... Michael cared more about building than his Family.
So in the game of opinions Michael is the better Don for folks who place more value in business than family.
@@EAGLESLIFEVLOG agreed. Michael took it to unprecedented heights. Can't ignore that.

VITO!!!!!!!! HE WAS LOVED, AND FEARED!!!!!!!!!!!!! MICHAEL, WAS JUST, FEARED!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, here's the issue. Could Vito succeed in Michael's position?
ANSWER: Young man Vito Corleone.
Please do a video on Niccolò Machiavelli
It’s not about who is better because we learned of Vito towards the end of his life. His son Michael displayed a part of the younger version of his father when Vito. They did a excellent job displaying the genes for certain minds in who can understand patterns.
Everyone who took part in 'The Godfather' should be rated as the best actors of all time. Brilliant movie. Brilliant acting. Brilliant directing. Brilliant book. And Brilliant shooting and even the mafia in New York got on board?
Michael really could've used Vito's advice and guidance over the years.
No your rong
@user-zy2ge2zc4u what's "rong" with you lol!
VITO. I loved the older Vito with Brando and the younger version with De Niro.
THANK YOU.
Absolutely! 👊👊✊✊👏👏👏
Don Vito, no doubt!!!! #1
Michael was definitely more viscous and cunning, Vito was smarter in the sense of he could read people very well and could see trouble. They were both perfect for their time and years they were godfathers
Exactly!!! 👊👊✊✊👏👏
Expand on this please
@@shayadayan3343 Expand? its just made-up bullshit like the movie, its fiction not reality. i think that Clemenza was really a fat ET from Venus & Michael;'s son left the blinds open so he could have his parents killed because they wouldn't let him have ice cream. Don Corleone was Luca Brasi's gay partner & Michael's wife was born a man.
???? Bizzare but intriguing
Exactly!!! 👊👊✊✊👏👏👌👌
Clemenza never had the ability to show him anything are you kidding me. Vito built the empire almost by himself, if you know business this is a much more difficult fit than growing the existing empire. There’s a reason kublai Khan is not as widely known as Ghingis
The fact that Vito's family was his number one concern, and they were happy and provided for can't be overstated.
Yes a Machiavelli breakdown is a must I have to see that
Sollozzo was correct
"Let's face it, with all due respect the Don was slipping. Ten years ago could I have gotten to him?"
Crucial mistakes:
Complacency - he wasn't properly guarded
It was a strategic mistake to refuse Sollozzo - Hagen was right
Sending Luca Brasi to pretend to be a turncoat wasn't going to fool anyone - his loyalty to Don Corleone was widely known.
@@gatekeepercreative Michael wasn't brought down, though
I'm looking forward to the video comparing Don Tomassino and Michael Corleone. "Why were you so loved, and I so feared?"
🤔🤔🤔 VITO'S STORY WAS MUCH DEEPER!!!...HOWEVER, MICHAEL DID SOME CRUCIAL SHIT TO MAKE HIS SELF FELT!!!...💞💪💯
Depends. During peacetime I would say Vito by a huge margin. His diplomacy and levelheaded approach to business would be better. Now wartime is another story. Michael is ruthless and military trained. So he was adapt and fully capable of shedding blood to achieve victory.
Vito adaptability to war was show in the oil war
@@SaddonghusseinWhen they were very low level. Michael had all the other families against him. He faced challenges Vito could not have imagined. He adapted his family’s empire to the modern world. Michael lost a daughter, and Vito lost a son (Sonny).
@@Outlier999 and vito didn't lose his family, even on those situations, Michael end up alone making a bad choice for the new Corleone don
The issue is could Vito fill the role that Michael had to?
@@UnexpectedWonder seeing how he took over from the fake Don I’m sure he could take over from a real Don.
@@BotheredBrute Hmm... 🤔🤔 Maybe, but the times were much different.

Michael for sure ❤
Why?
Because he's smart, quiet, a real killer before he became the Boss ,gangsta, not a snitch, knows who his enemies, and above all a 48 laws of power type of Boss

Michael and Vito Corleone are the epitome of what having an extraordinary amount of power actually looks like.
But the question always comes up, who was a better don? Who is the “true Godfather”?
And it really is a difficult question to answer subjectively, because unless you have a clear bias towards either one, you certainly can make an argument for both of them at a first glance.
That’s why in this video we will finally answer this heavily contested question.
We’ve tailored it to our specific mission. To find out who is the “true godfather”.
We’ll also be keeping score
Feel free to score them alongside us.
If You were a "Mob Boss", Who would you currently be?
Would you be a don Vito or are you closer to Michael or even Sonny?
But what I'm even more curious about is seeing which of you are actually Fredo’s!

The fact that Vito raised Michael to arguably be better than him is a great achievement. One that Michael could not match. Vito is the best.
Thanks for the video ❤
Can you blame him with all the Betrayals that he endured?!
@@UnexpectedWonder No I can`t blame him.
I for one would really enjoy a more in depth video on Machiavelli....
Vito outsmarted the enemies that Michael would inherit from the grave never forget that

Michael was fortunate to have the counseling of Vito. Vito learned everything by trial and error
I agree 100%. Vito was more analytical than he gets credit for, most things he learned through trial and error like you say, or watching others. It's all he had.
That’s true 👍🏻
Vito hung the moon and stars, Michael made it bigger, but didn't have the loyalty.
Let me put it this way: if I had to face one of them, I'd go with Vito. Vito has clear lines he won't cross. Michael doesn't, and regularly does things Vito would be appalled by.
Also as the video points out, Vito would actually try to earn my respect. Michael would see me as a pawn.
I'd trust and respect Vito more than Michael, Michael is corporate in his thinking. To him I'm an asset,to Vito I would be considered someone valuable and a friend of the Family.
michael was better than vito
just as vincent was better than michael
but again had vito not prompted michael about the barzini meeting he might not have been able to see a trap there
vincent was not featured for long enough to be able to bear a comparision with the 2 dons before him
however vincent saved michael's life from joey zasa's helicopter attack
I agree 💯
They're both are incomparable. I'll choose Vito because he built his organization brick by brick.
It's not really a debate. In legit business, startup artists often can't run and maintain the exploding size of their new business. Large corporate managers rarely could build the company they control.
In this fictional account, it appears they both could startup and maintain. So they are just different and primarily able to adapt to the current situation.
Before I watch this video, I’m predicting a tie.
Vito for sure, he held his family together

This one is tough...
Fredo! Because he’s not dumb, he’s smart!
And he wants respect, don't forget that.
What’s the background music?
I would absolutely love to see you break down Machiavelli
I vote that Vito was the Godfather and Michael was the Don. Two different titles for two different types.
I wish we had more sequels beside the little part on part two on Vito
Vito built his empire. He was respected , he ciuld be reasonable or ruthless. Michael inherited the family. He had to prove he had the same tenacity and intelligence as his father .
