Ciao, amici! Welcome back to The Culture Mafia. We've got a VERY special video for you today. So sit back, pour yourself an espresso, maybe light up a cigar, and let’s dive in🌹🤌
When it comes to the Novel, reasons why Barzini wasn't shaken by Moe's death. One, he was too highed up on himself to notice; he didn't consider Michael a threat, more like a 2- bit punk in a suit; and a space cadet or a girl scout could've whacked Moe. Moe was a well connected Gambler/Crook. Yeah he built Vegas but he wasn't well protected and had a big mouth.
The meeting with Moe Greene was more than a negotiation-it’s a strategic masterclass, a practical application of The Art of War in the world of the mafia. What if there was a way to unlock that clarity and gain the upper hand in every situation? artofwar.academy 🤫 🐉
@@KtotheGbut don’t you think it would have been a mistake to leave him out too? Cuz he would have been even more resentful and then the family would look weaker. I feel like they were trying to give him something to do so he could “feel like a man” lol
@@lolcopexxhe wouldn’t betray Sonny just because Sonny was older than him, Michael on the other hand, younger. It was obvious in Part II that Fredo said this to Michael: “I’m your older brother, you don’t take care of me…”
I've studied strategy for a good bit of my life. This channel is the only place where strategy is discussed and shown at the base root. I enjoy it very much.
Micheal was pretty much a younger Vito, the book talked about that a lot. Where Sonny had to be told everything and didn't bother listening anyway, Micheal already had a mind for the family business, even if he didn't want any part in it. When it came time to teaching him, Vito only had to relay experience, not the fundamentals and Micheal was ready and willing to listen. He was born to cause death and make money.
Fredo lacked wisdom and foresight. He saw only an opportunity to gain respect by betraying Michael, failing to anticipate the consequences of his actions.
It’s sad for Michael that he became what he never wanted to be. Part of me thinks that had Apollonia not died and same goes for the Don, I don’t think Michael would’ve been that ruthless.
In the book the dom was always going to overstep fredo as he didn't have the leadership potential Michael was the only one who could stand up to the Don sonny got angry fredo always appeased and Michael always was defiant and made his own decisions.
No, Michael changed after his father got shot and he gave Sollozzo and that cop retribution. He was already ruthless when he met Apollonia. Had Apollonia lived, he would've became even more powerful, because she would've supported him fully, unlike Kay, who needled him every step of the way.
I feel Michael was always ruthless at his core. Situations and complexities may feed the lion, but the lion has to be there to be fed. And, the lion does not become a pussy cat, because his consciousness and self awareness desires it so.
I always felt that Kay was his second choice and he treated her like that. Going through the motions of what a husband should be but not understanding that emotional connection is part of that. Also I REALLY need to finish the novel.
Agreed. That was the problem. He never looked in the mirror and accepted responsibility for the close assasination of Don Vito. If he was any other man, they would kill him. Its a mistake that is untolerable. You can almost say it was the beginning of the demise of Fredo. He could have been a secret mole within the family all along. I know we dont think he was too bright, but with the weakness of Fredo, he could have been used just as early. I know some will say he would never because of Vito and Sonny, but think. Who else would fumble a gun when his father is being attacked and recover from it. Because of his position in the family, Fredo failed up when he was never ready at all, and did not have or use the suppporting cast to succeed. Also, there is some culpability on Don Vito for Fredo's position.
When Mo Green mentions that the don is sick and weak and suggests by projection that the family is also weak, Al Pacino gives the slightest reaction of weakness. At that moment, for just a moment, he shifts his intense gaze off Green and looks at the table. Beautiful subtle reaction. Great actors are great listeners, e.g. Robert Mitchum knew how to listen.
Notice also that Michael mentioned nothing about skimming to Moe Greene. Greene volunteered that accusation himself, thus not only an admission of guilt but revealing his true intentions to Michael. Brilliantly well done by Michael
Every time I watch this film I wonder why so many people question Michael’s decision to send Fredo fishing. It had to be done. Fredo made the exact same mistake Sonny made, he showed their enemies a weakness they would later manipulate.
@@TheCultureMafia great video man. Like I said in the other video, I’m a big fan your work regardless of the voice over (although I have to say this one is easily the best). Keep up the good work🔥

"Fredo, you're my older brother and I love you, but don't ever take sides with anyone against the family again. Ever." Fredo got the only warning he should have needed.
One of my favorite of all time scenes is in the beginning... The monologue of Micheal between him and the Senator in Michael's office. Its perfect. Another intense verbal chess match
Micheal was a business man, he didn't want to destroy Moe, but use him to continue his gain. Micheal wanted to see and know who his soldiers were..pawns and all. The Don "Vito" was betrayed and almost killed. Michael's actions at this point were to unearth all enemies, even the enemies that were kept close.
The insult started when he mispronounced the family's name. Horrible thing to do to an Italian man.... supposedly actor couldn't pronounce it right. Hence the bad voiceover when he said "I talked to bazzini ... couldn't pronounce the name. You missed the point though. Michael wanted Mo dead. Now he had mo's disrespect to seal the murder. Nothing more here
In the novel, it's not that he wasn't allowed to step in, it's that he truly didn't think there was anything wrong with a husband beating his wife. They tell her it will stop when she stops giving him things to beat her for@@surfohio
@@surfohio True, because in a cut scene -- Talia Shire is running down stairs and ends up in a room with Vito, Sonny and Tom and Sonny was going to help Talia but Vito stopped Sonny, saying not to get involved in their sis' marriage. There's a video of that on YT
Well she took it…. She didnt have to. I don’t think the Don knew to what extent the abuse was. Sonny knew though… that Carlo crap should have been nipped in the bud
I don't think Michael cared about needing a reason to take Moe out. He had already decided he was going to take out all his enemies or the family would die. This was all just for information to know if his next moves would work.
Fredo was never considered when the Don, Sonny, Michael and Tom were were making moves and discussing the family. Bad enough he was weak and slow to begin with, but he was always made to feel like he was just being tolerated, never involved. His lack of confidence, his being left out of the inner circle...he never had the benefit of learning how the game was played and what was expected. The most tragic figure in the entire story.
Fredo had to be chastised for siding with Green, in a similar fashion to Sonny's chastisement from Vito for speaking out of turn at the Sollozzo meeting.
There’s a direct correlation from Micheal correcting his brother Fredo as the firm scolding from Vito to Sonny to opening his trap outside the family circle on full display for Salotzo’s ears!

Fredo was resentful at his position in the family. Deep down he knew he wasn’t a leader. He was self destructive. He was not a serious “player”. He was a guy that liked to have a good time and he partied way too much. Fredo was truly a nobody. He was an embarrassment to the family… everybody knew it!!! He didn’t know how to be loyal.
The Moe Greene meeting is one of my favorite scenes in the movie. It really does show that Michael has taken the lessons his father had given him to heart. If only Sonny and Fredo had listened to what Vito had told them that they would still be alive and Michael would have the quiet life he always wanted. Thank You for the videos!!! I would love to see videos on the women in the story especially Carmella.
So Much set up in this scene with Moe Green and it basically up all the story for Godfather Part II. That's where the lackee for Hyman Roth flexed the muscle
Fredo is the middle child, so it is likely that had Sonny still been alive when Michael met with Moe, Fredo would not have been is such a position, and Moe would have been more respectful. However, in their eyes, Sonny, the crown prince, is dead, the spare is a fool, and Michael is a third-string tagalong. Fredo should have been using his time in Vegas to strengthen his position, but he was content to merely coast in place while slowly becoming embittered. At the very least, he should have been feeding information back to Vito and Michael about things in Vegas. In the end, I think that Sonny would have done from the beginning what Michael did not, cut Fredo from the family business. Michael tried to rule as his father had, but he should have completely disconnected Fredo from the illegitimate side of the business, making him useless to Roth.
@@jayt9608 I don’t think sending Fredo away would have worked. He was too bitter. And he would still try his best to plot against them. As Michael said, Fredo is weak and stupid. That’s just what it was. I think he gave Fredo a courtesy allowing him to spend time with their mother until she passed away. Don’t you think?
Sadly to say yes and no Sonny was all about the family so if credo messed up he would have him killed but he would also gave him a second chance so if Sonny was alive a lot of things wouldn’t have happened due to his relationship with fredo and not only that he knew how people worked after all he was always apart of his fathers business before Michael
That is literally the best characterization comparisons of the Corleone brothers I’ve ever heard. “Michael was playing chess, 10 steps ahead…..Fredo was playing…Uno or something, I dunno….” Lmao 😂
Fredo could have been Las Vegas big man, the whole branch of the Corleone family there, while Michael could have gone not so far from New York, to Washington to play politics...
Right! If you think about it, IF he did what he was sent there for and learned the business AND Vegas, he might have been able to take Moe Green's place? But, he just wasn't smart enough.
Remember that while Michael was learning from Vito, Fredo was in Vegas. He hadn't seen the changes in Michael, and figured he was his kid brother talking out of his ass. He didn't realize (partly because he was too stupid to pick up the nuances of Michael's speech and planning) that this wasn't the same Michael he last saw years before.
I don't think Michael was that bothered about Mo Green. I think he knew he could take him out whenever he wanted. Michael was just interested in how he could use Green, his survival or his end, to consolidate his power as widely as possible. Michael never acted on passion, only on strategy.
Is it just me, or is this a longer version of an older video? I'm only a minute in, but this sounds super familiar... I'm not mad or anything, just curious. Edit: Having watched more of the video, you've added little info boxes in the corners and more of the meeting. Really well done!
In fairness to Fredo, maybe Michael could have given him a heads up of what was coming and behavior expectations. Michael knew Fredo well enough to know he'd be an issue.
When Hyman Roth says "Moe Green was talking loud, saying stupid things," he is referring to the fact that Moe Green, a casino owner associated with Roth, was being overly boisterous and making unwise comments, likely revealing sensitive information or potentially jeopardizing their business dealings, which ultimately led to his assassination orchestrated by Michael Corleone. Key points about the quote: "More Green": This is a shortened way of saying "Moe Green," a character known for his flashy lifestyle and gaudy casinos. "Talking loud": Implies that Moe Green was openly discussing things he shouldn't be, potentially bragging or making careless remarks. "Saying stupid things": This means that the things Moe Green was saying were not only loud but also foolish and potentially damaging to their business interests.
Just read on Wikipedia that Alex Rocco allegedly had real life ties to the mafia in his younger days, but he wasn’t a made man, just an affiliate who occasionally might have been a driver.
A rare feat where a sequel surpasses a monumental classic first act. *"The Empire Strikes Back,"* *"Aliens"* and *"T2: Judgment Day"* are the only other films I can think of. This is a brilliant analysis, the reason I watch Part II the most.
Al Pacino's acting was amazing in this...his whole physical structure and face changed into that " Michael " we know now as soon as he looked at that newspaper of his father's attempted murder
I have long stated that the Godfather 1--3 theme that was the unwavering connection between father and son only a true Italian family could appreciate. But here most of these observations are very revealing, and I appreciate it. As someone who is half Italian with a 100% Italian father i do not support ruthless criminals, but this series IS very important and entertaining. Perhaps the most severe ending and my favorite was the collapse and lonely natural death of the singular don.
Could you please make a series of videos on the Laws of Power in order? I would be REALLY interested in that, as well I'm sure that others would be as well.
Absolutely a phenomenal job with this one. Your content is always awesome but this rises far above that great job. It's guaranteed the next time I watch the movie and that scene comes along I will be thinking entirely of your content while watching it.
I always think of Vincent Gallo’s rendition of Fredo’s ‘I’m smart’ speech in the movie Arizona Dream when thinking about Fredo. Thank you for this deep dive

“You straightened my brother out?” Moe greens face said it all
In fairness to Fredo, maybe Michael could have given him a heads up of what was coming and behavior expectations. Michael knew Fredo well enough to know he'd be an issue.
I like this type of video and the length. Sometimes I feel 10 mins just isn't long enough. 💙
Key points about the quote:
"More Green":
This is a shortened way of saying "Moe Green," a character known for his flashy lifestyle and gaudy casinos.
"Talking loud":
Implies that Moe Green was openly discussing things he shouldn't be, potentially bragging or making careless remarks.
"Saying stupid things":
This means that the things Moe Green was saying were not only loud but also foolish and potentially damaging to their business interests.
“The most powerful person in your life at all times is yourself.”
David Michael Anthony
In the movie Moe Green, was killed the same day as all the heads of the five families. So Al didn't leave town
We actually have a Full Playlist of covering various key laws of Power.
We'll be adding a lot more very soon...

" he was playing uno or something idk" 😂😂😂 too funny I love these videos.
😂🤌
Great Video
Grazie 🤌
Thanks for this series, greatest of all time (first 2)
My pleasure 💯
I'm glad you emphasised that it's only the first 2 😂
Michael hit them and they never recovered........ And He wiped out all his enemies....
Absolutely a phenomenal job with this one. Your content is always awesome but this rises far above that great job.
It's guaranteed the next time I watch the movie and that scene comes along I will be thinking entirely of your content while watching it.
MORE backstory of Moe Green and Bugsy Siegel! anxiously awaiting in San Francisco
There really isn't any. Moe Green is based on Moe Sedway and Gus Greenbaum.
Awesome analysis!
"Michael was playing chess, and Fredo..." I was expecting "checkers" but "Uno or something" made me spit out my beer. 🤣
Freddie gave him the information on his own family
Being a traitor was already set in motion
Traitor. Please
I'd pay so much to see a negotiation between Moe and Don Barzini
How much? How much would you pay? 🧐
@@schrisdellopoulos9244 I'd make an offer you could not refuse
😂@@schrisdellopoulos9244
Moe Greene's mistake. He underestimated a Coreleone. He viewed Michael the same way he viewed Fredo. Incompetent, weak and not too bright.
very good video i never saw the scene this way makes all the sense
I always think of Vincent Gallo’s rendition of Fredo’s ‘I’m smart’ speech in the movie Arizona Dream when thinking about Fredo.
Thank you for this deep dive
Micheal definitely came back from Italy as the godfather
Fredo's stupidity was lethal in the business.
