Competing in the Original by Motul category is undoubtedly the toughest challenge of the Dakar Rally. Competitors in this class don't have the support of a factory team behind them and must do all bike maintenance and repairs themselves, or with the help of other riders.
Join us as we follow Paul Neff and his friends of the American Rally Originals through the early stages of the 2023 Dakar Rally.

Work with #netflix and make a “Ride to Survive” series! The #dakar such a unique and grueling test of man, machine, team.. but these unsupported guys are the TRUE endurance champs. Just finishing as unsupported should come with the same notoriety as the Factory teams. The Sahara, the Atocama, the Saudi deserts are unforgiving. Imagine getting marooned out there. It’s almost a death sentence
These guys are Dakar!! not your overpaid athletes....
Would like to see more coverage of these guys working on their bikes and talking about their stage adventures
There is a lot but in french
Lyndon Poskitt has documented his Male Moto i guess
Look up Lyndon Poskitt!!! you get so much more insighyt into Dakar than even the official Dakar videos
Factory teams are fascinating and all...but these dudes are the true spirit of Dakar 🔥
These dudes ARE the Dakar.
There’s even a few guys who did the Molle Moto class solo. Check out Races To Places here on YT. Lyndon Poskitt completed it 3 times.
These dudes are the REAL HERO's of Dakar!!!
And dakar doesn't covers them properly.
Absolutely. The factory guys just get the coverage because they're going the fastest.
Ok, the factory riders they are amazing for speed, but the true essence of the Dakar are these riders, the Malle Moto riders, there is everything here, passion, desire for adventure, determination, and an always positive thought .... True modern heroes.
Yes, you are right
HEROES???
@@wyattchampion Ciao Wyatt, Yes, for me Heroes, Because to wake up at 3 in the morning to do 800 km a day in the middle of the desert, in the stones etc. maybe in the rain like this year, and then instead of resting you have to do maintenance on the bike yourself ... going to sleep late ... you have to be special people, and I see these special people as modern heroes, capable of doing things out of the ordinary.
@@wyattchampion Well yes, the idea of going against the odds, competing against others that have it easier, but not cowering and doing it anyway without whining. That is what people admire for a good reason.
Massive respect for those guys & gals: Truly hardcore!
This guy Justifies the whole event!
Cheers to him and his limited crew
These are the true warriors of Dakar. All Heart and soul.
@0:15 you say no American has finished the Dakar unsupported. Chris Jones finished the Dakar in 2007 unsupported. There's probably been a few others as well.
This is the Dakar, true people.
I'm also a little disappointed by the lack of coverage for those who do the Dakar without assistance!! They are indeed heroes of this endurance test💪
THIS IS BEST VID ON YOUTOOBE!
The Doodes a badass warfighter legend!
God speed brother.
STAY HARD!
And Paul looks like a guy you'd only cross paths with at an in & out burger. Massive respect.
THIS is my favorite Dakar !
It's been an amazing race so far!
Did a course at touratech Rally with Paul, excellent trainer and such a good man.
You go Paul !
This is just completely unbelievable, that people can do this... that people choose to do this. Bravo.
This is brutal! Respect to them!!
This is the true spirit of the Dakar rally. For me.
The TRUE HEROS.Well done guys.
So happy and proud of you guys God bless and stay strong warriors.
This is what Dakar and rallying is about.
There's an even harder class: FIA T2
FIA T2 is basically to rally-raid what group N is/was to normal rallying: you gotta use a very normal car and can't do much about it. The class is harder than "originals" because of a couple of differences:
· While in both classes you have to service your own vehicle and in T2 you have your co-driver to help you, a roadlegal car isn't prepared to be serviced the way a KTM 450 Replica is. Changing any remotely internal part in a Toyota LandCruiser (only good car nowadays for T2) is a huge problem.
· Do you really think the military-style trunk all original riders have is small/not enough? Imagining carrying your own spare parts all the time. FIA T2 vehicles do not get any external help at all. You carry your own clothes, your own tent and all the spare parts the LandCruiser might need. That includes rims, suspension, differential, tubes, wires and some teams over the years have carried along even whole transmissions and gearboxes.
There is a reason why "originals" gets like 30 entries and FIA T2 hasn't reached more than 6 since the African days!
Riding a motorcycle is always more taxing physically than driving a car
@@Colby_0-3_IRL_and_title_fights - You've seen UTVs and countless superexpensive vehicles run into trouble. Now think how a turbodiesel 5-door LandCruiser has to go through the exact same stuff.
A KTM 450 Rally is more than prepared for the Dakar Rally, a LandCruiser is an automobile for soccer moms.
@Dan Arnets he wasnt commenting on the vehicle but the physical aspect of riding it.
How awesome is that! Being able to have a go and follow the dream.
What are the official requirements to enter and ride the Dakar like this team? Can 'anyone' enter? Are there qualifiers? TIA :)
love these guys
Nice work boys!
Absolutely amazing
Warriors!
Inspirational
Finishing Dakar by an ordinary racing enthusiast is a lifetime achievent
i wish there were more field(bivouac) repair video's how guys do that on the trip etc.
That’s pretty cool .
It's a different thing when you cant just throw money at it.
I want more of this. This is real racing. Couldn't care less about million dollar prototypes driven by people who have never had a real job.
le paris-dakar bientot en chine :')
Kinda weird a company with the biggest budget in sport across the globe running a story on unsupported competitors, perhaps you could help them out a little 🤦♂️
Just wondering, why do most Americans love cars that are either running around in circles for hours or race in straight lines in less than a minute ?
I'm really curious
they say its unsupported but then he says his team was helping fix the bike?
Meaning not backed by the factory or main supplier with vehicles and finances, basically they’re doing it with friends, family, and they’re own hard cash.
First time for an American doing it solo so what is the break here, hundreds of people do it alone.
And what about the sponsors??
🇿🇦♥️
What's bikes? Ktm 990?
450cc. They are riding KTM 450 Rally replicas.
This category is too little promoted, generaly speaking, including the other channels too, Dakar ch. especially. And they do the real Dakar race, being drivers, then in the 2nd part of they day, mechanics.
Phenomenal, wish we could get even more coverage and behind the scenes of small teams like this for next year!
Amazing!,! There should be so much more coverage of these guys
Give them more support, yeaaa, they are also very important
Thanks for this video, this perspective which makes Red Bull so special. No one talks about this riders,. Thanks for sharing those challenges with us.
Our pleasure!
Carlo de Gavardo was the first American in Malle Moto, in fact he was the first privateer, and the first American who makes podium in Dakar Rally in late 90's, only half an hour of some Italian guy called Fabrizio Meoni (Multiple Dakar Winner, who tragically lost his life, racing the Dakar a few years later), his assistance by the time of the Podium, if I don't recall bad, was a close friend as Mechanic and his Dad, in a privateer KTM 660 Replica, against all the KTM Factory bikes of that time, and Some Yamahas
After that accomplishment came the KTM Factory Team and give Carlo official driver Status, Carlo was instrumental in developing the KTM 450 Rally, before that, all the bikes were 660cc
He was the first American, he was so respected in the Biouvac than knowing him was instrumental in the decision of moving the Dakar to America in late 2000's
thanks for the great comment 🙌
Meoni was an Italian rider !
@@kiwizz2177 Duh, thanks dude! I totally screwed up
He is Chilean actually. Born: July 14, 1969, Huelquen, Chile. Out of curiosity, why do you think he's American?
@@moralester It is usually a pedantic way to remind people that America is a continent and not a country, so while everyone understands american to mean a citizen of the United States, it can technically mean anyone from the Western Hemisphere.
finishing the dakar without support is something to tell to kids and nephew
CONGRATS
Why not show the unsupported Lady of the race? Kirsten Landman....
I've raced against Paul Neff. He's fast a F, boi
To do something you dream and love doing is just pure natural high. Period. Respect to those who are unsupported and respect to those who help others who needs a hand for times of repairs mental support. Amazing!
I can’t LIKE this enough.
ALL you originals you are the essence of this adventure good luck to you all.
So these "red boxes" get transported from camp to camp for them? Because I didn't see them strapped to the bikes.
Yes. They can only use what they carry on the bike and fits in that box. He had a black holdall though, they must be clothes not limited by the rules.
@@the_lost_navigator7266 there is a guy in classic was talking about carrying stuff for the others in his van but that is in classic
@@saiff1924 yes, the classic don't have the same restrictions as these riders.
Klim gear looks good on you, and I know you appreciate wearing Klim and the Atlas throttle lock sure helps giving that right hand a rest
I see only one left out of five in the final stage. Congratulations to him and to the team 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
An incredibly humbling experience. I've been dreaming of Dakar myself. Well done guys.
Been riding since i was 6yo,but don't reckon i would survive a day. Respect.......
i m more impressed by these guys than pro teams
Heroes, every one of them
Well done Paul
I love it when people from all parts of the world get out of their own ponds and find adventures that their neighbours not necessarily knows anything about. But those that know, they know... 🥰
Hardcore racing 🤘
Hello, my Lifan 125 pit bike arrived yesterday from china. When is next Dakar rally?
"unsupported" Yet has a whole team fixing his bike... is there something I am not getting here..
This is me, rocking up to every race, BY MYSELF, tool bag in hand, ready to kick ass alone. Idk what to do to get sponsored. It would be nice to at least have a team though...
The Dakar as it once was, an extreme adventure only for private drivers and motorsport freaks with money. Today the Dakar is a gigantic battle of materials with the best professional racing drivers, but no longer differs from all other major motorsport events. Even if there are still enough private drivers, you won't find them in the reports.
No offence to this guy, but Malle Motto category in Dakar has some regular competitors who do reach finish almost every year. And they do make a big story out of it by the huge media house, do not wear gear with gold accents, work on their bike purely by themselves, and do not wake up in a tent with the clipped mic being turned on :D So it would be nice to cover these legends.
This is not unsupported. Someone carries your stuff and puts up your tent? You have heated racks to dry your stuff. Am I missing something? Unsupported means doing the entire thing with no outside help
It must be a fascinating journey! But out of curiosity, does getting help from your 'teammate' to fix your bike against the melle moto rule?
This is the only category I have watched for awhile now. Dakar lost a lot of it's luster once bigger names got into it.
The drivers are there own mechanics, techs, engineers and drivers of their vehicles... the true motor/ car guys
It should be titled "The unsung heroes of Dakar". The limelight on the stars is so huge that the passion of motorsports is lost.
so the first American to be a man in the Dakar rally... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
unsupported yet Redbull are profiting from their story?
Looks like Mathias doppelgänger
We can see the resemblance 😅
@@RedBullRally lol
unsupported lmao. they ve paid at least 50-100k for the race.
These riders are the true heroes
One day DEFINITELY
Legends, living the dream. Good on em for making it happen :')
Is riding a bike a standard for armatur racers or it can be any vehicle.
DO IT ONA 2 STROKE RACE BIKE ILL BE IMPRESSED....LMAO
That dude’s flag is backwards.
seems easy enough lol
🔥🔥🔥
I look up to that guys. Must be awesome 👌
You should be very proud of yourself
these dudes are crazy! awesome
The real heroes of the Dakar
Wow 😱👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏽
amazing and inspiring!
one day i will finish malle moto dakar race!
5 RIDERS .... UNSUPPORTED...
er....have I missed something here. ?...So the other 4 aren't supporting you. ??.... Bullshite. !!!
Yeah!
All credit to these guys, unbelievable tough but this is how it all started. The first Dakar's were private individuals with no back up and on old skool Xt500s (OMG!) Imagine how grueling it must have been the year that it was Paris to Dakar, and then back to Paris !!!
The race is only half of the effort. The logistics of it all is the hard part. Customs, credentials, your gear & bike is a massive undertaking that obviously takes place long before race begins.
This video was way too short, we need a docu about the "small" guy of dakar!
Longer version of on Red Bull TV
Amazing! Would love to see more of these guys. Huge respect to all finishers and participants!
Great class and it’s done for the love of Dakar racing. Congratulations guys👏🏻👊🏻
Every kilometre is etched onto the chubby guys face. Salut.
LLLEEEEETTTTTSSSSS GOOOOOOOO MÁRIO PATRÃO!!! Estamos a contar contigo 🇵🇹
Awesome job lads.
What a journey that must be
Good on yas
Hope y'all threw a little something their way!
Dead impressive, I'd like to see more of these guys
