An incredibly humbling experience. I've been dreaming of Dakar myself. Well done guys. Been riding since i was 6yo,but don't reckon i would survive a day. Respect.......
Carlo de Gavardo was the first American in Malle Moto, in fact he was the first privateer, and the first American who makes podium in Dakar Rally in late 90's, only half an hour of some Italian guy called Fabrizio Meoni (Multiple Dakar Winner, who tragically lost his life, racing the Dakar a few years later), his assistance by the time of the Podium, if I don't recall bad, was a close friend as Mechanic and his Dad, in a privateer KTM 660 Replica, against all the KTM Factory bikes of that time, and Some Yamahas After that accomplishment came the KTM Factory Team and give Carlo official driver Status, Carlo was instrumental in developing the KTM 450 Rally, before that, all the bikes were 660cc He was the first American, he was so respected in the Biouvac than knowing him was instrumental in the decision of moving the Dakar to America in late 2000's

@0:15 you say no American has finished the Dakar unsupported. Chris Jones finished the Dakar in 2007 unsupported. There's probably been a few others as well.
I love it when people from all parts of the world get out of their own ponds and find adventures that their neighbours not necessarily knows anything about. But those that know, they know... 🥰
This category is too little promoted, generaly speaking, including the other channels too, Dakar ch. especially. And they do the real Dakar race, being drivers, then in the 2nd part of they day, mechanics.
The race is only half of the effort. The logistics of it all is the hard part. Customs, credentials, your gear & bike is a massive undertaking that obviously takes place long before race begins.
This is me, rocking up to every race, BY MYSELF, tool bag in hand, ready to kick ass alone. Idk what to do to get sponsored. It would be nice to at least have a team though...
All credit to these guys, unbelievable tough but this is how it all started. The first Dakar's were private individuals with no back up and on old skool Xt500s (OMG!) Imagine how grueling it must have been the year that it was Paris to Dakar, and then back to Paris !!!
There's an even harder class: FIA T2 FIA T2 is basically to rally-raid what group N is/was to normal rallying: you gotta use a very normal car and can't do much about it. The class is harder than "originals" because of a couple of differences: · While in both classes you have to service your own vehicle and in T2 you have your co-driver to help you, a roadlegal car isn't prepared to be serviced the way a KTM 450 Replica is. Changing any remotely internal part in a Toyota LandCruiser (only good car nowadays for T2) is a huge problem. · Do you really think the military-style trunk all original riders have is small/not enough? Imagining carrying your own spare parts all the time. FIA T2 vehicles do not get any external help at all. You carry your own clothes, your own tent and all the spare parts the LandCruiser might need. That includes rims, suspension, differential, tubes, wires and some teams over the years have carried along even whole transmissions and gearboxes. There is a reason why "originals" gets like 30 entries and FIA T2 hasn't reached more than 6 since the African days!
@@Colby_0-3_IRL_and_title_fights - You've seen UTVs and countless superexpensive vehicles run into trouble. Now think how a turbodiesel 5-door LandCruiser has to go through the exact same stuff. No offence to this guy, but Malle Motto category in Dakar has some regular competitors who do reach finish almost every year. It should be titled "The unsung heroes of Dakar". The limelight on the stars is so huge that the passion of motorsports is lost.

What are the official requirements to enter and ride the Dakar like this team? Can 'anyone' enter? Are there qualifiers? TIA :)

Yes. They can only use what they carry on the bike and fits in that box. He had a black holdall though, they must be clothes not limited by the rules.
