Hi Diane, nice selection, but how do you pick 4 songs out of this endless catalogue ? Do you know all albums from 69 - 80 ? What do you think about his comeback with Supernatural ? Unbelievable number of sold records ... but I'd also go with Santana I, Abraxas and III, that's best of Latin Rock 🤘 PS: fun fact - my younger brother didn't like all the percussions, he called it jungle music. I, the dancer in the family, loved all the rhythms 🤣
@@rudolfbecker4313 Rudy, my music knowledge is very minimal! I found a best of Santana CD in a bargain bin at a department store. I of course knew of their radio songs but nothing deeper. As I get older my appreciation for fine music gets wider. Also having so many choices at my fingertips is advantageous. So to answer your question I picked 4 songs off the one CD I own. The choice was difficult though! All the best, Diane
I have to thank you so much Diane, the variety of music that you have brought to the channel has been brilliant, and almost certainly not stuff that I would have heard without gentle nudge. Thank you for Santana, I'm enthralled!
@@JimNewstead Thanks Diane and Jim to bring Santana. I have all albums and recommend their first 5 albums. Nearby to say, Jim - 'Mirage' from CAMEL is an important piece of music. Cheers 🍻
Carlos Santana’s guitar is instantly recognizable. His tone, the feel, the sound, his chord structure is so unique. His Latin tinged jazz recordings are wonderful. Thanks Jim and Diane.
Carlos Santana is one of those people - Zappa is another - who never failed to bring out the absolute best in every musician who worked with him. Abraxas and Caravanserai are rightly considered their best two albums from this era. But I've never heard anything better from them than the suite of instrumental pieces on Side Two of Borboletta that reaches a climax in the wonderful Promise Of The Fisherman.
Always had Santana on the back burner to do a deep dive into, but never got around to it. I'm a big fan of what I have heard of his older stuff, though.
You might remember, we talked about Santana a few weeks ago and I had told you, that after listening during my lunch walk to the whole Santana 1 album I thought about requesting the whole album, since it's so great and original. You told me about Diane's request and I wanted to wait and see what's coming. So we have at least the famous Soul Sacrifice of album #1, a song which everybody knows, who's familiar with the Woodstock movie. Many of you might remember 18 year old Michael Shrieve playing a great drum solo.Besides him in the original line up were also Mike Carabello on Conga and percussion and Jose Chepito Areas on Timbales, Conga and percussion. Santana 1 was Top 10 in the US, the follow up Abraxas with Oye Como Va, Black Magic Woman and Samba Pa Ti even reached no 1, same as Santana 3 of which is No one to depend on. All 3 albums are great latin rock. Then he got interested in Jazz and recorded albums with John McLaughlin and Alice Coltrane. The Santana albums Caranvanserai and Welcome were a bit different then the original Santana albums. Another great one is album # 6 Borboletta. The fourth song is relatively new of 2014. I had followed Santana in the 70s but then lost interest, because he had some good songs, but no more albums of the quality and sound as the first 3. Fun fact nr 1 : Today around noon I listened to Caravanserai and Borboletta without knowing, what's gonna be on the channel later on 😄 Fun fact nr 2 : Transatlantic covered Soul Sacrifice on their Whirlwind Bonus CD🤘
I was amazed to discover that Oye Como Va didn't hit the UK charts at all as I seem to remember hearing it a lot on UK radio back in 1971. Who could fail to enjoy it though? Soul Sacrifice is the real gem however and the Woodstock performance must be in the top cinematic live performances chart if it existed. (Woodstock contains at least five of the top 10 in this mythical chart) Alas, like so many other musical artists, the mojo went missing sometime in the late seventies and, even though he won Grammies and made even more money later on, I lost interest.
Hi Ken, I could say the same about Samba Pa Ti, I bet if you asked anybody in Germany about a Santana song, 80% would say Samba Pa Ti, others know Jingo of album nr 1 or Oye Como va and Black Magic Woman of Abraxas. Later on Europa was another hit. Of Woodstock I also love Joe Cocker and Ten Years After 🤘
@@rudolfbecker4313 Yes, Samba Pa Ti was the first to chart in the UK and it was only after that that I saw Woodstock and realised that Santana could rock hard. Virtually anything on Woodstock is worth seeing (every festival needs something like Sha-Na-Na to make you smile) but TYA, Jimi Hendrix and The Who do it for me and who knew that Joe Cocker or Sly &the Family Stone should be so good live? Edit: I should say also that I have the DVD with plenty of bonus material that didn't make it to the movie and there's a lot of good stuff there too.
The fourth album 'Caravanserai' was far ahead of his time. It has fusion, hard rock, trance, psychedelic rock and elements of a soundtrack. It's progressive and would fits very well for a 'full album listening'.
As a new sub after watching your take on Yes 90125 side 1... I had to do a seach to see if you had covered Santana, I am pleasd you had, and recently too...As a long term fan I can only agree with many of the replies below, the Man himself makes his guitars talk, while the band create an atmosphere not often found when you listen deep. My vinyl collection of Santana is complete with a few cd of the more recent releases. Fav tracks from them include 'Aqua marine' (album-Marathon), One chain (album-Inner secrets) I could go on for long enough but I'll curtail myself lol...Looks like I have a binge session coming up...well done.
Hi Jim, This must be my fastest reaction ever.😅 This is not Chick Corea’s Return to forever (love them) but Santana as you mentioned. Alzheimer light, we call this in the Netherlands 😂. Great music. I listened to them very often in my teenage years, many decades ago. Oye como va is a well known song. The rest of the titles I don’t recognize but I have a bad memory for titles. My memory for the music itself is excellent so I probably will recognize them anyway.

I agree with 'Promise of..'.
The second last song on 'Welcome' Flame-Sky has also mindblowing guitar playing.
The drummer, Michael Shrieve, was 19 years old when this was recorded!!!
