Mrrgle the Mediocre what’s your interpretation? Ide like to know
@@lizardandbone Well, it's so non-subtle, it's not hard to see. The obvious analogy is 2D Animation versus 3D Animation and Jonochrome's relationship with the two. It's totally possible there's more to it but that's the simple surface level of it.
Mrrgle the Mediocre Well that’s one way to interpret it I suppose.

It actually took me a second viewing to really get this one. It’s a HUGE metaphor for the relationship 2D and 3D animation has nowadays. Well known 2D cartoons transitioning over to 3D, some being unable to and resulting in a massive flop, the wide range of 3D compared to very little 2D nowadays...it goes on. Notice how when he’s sucked up into the sky, it’s a film reel? Even in the little ways. Notice how much less expressive and lively his 3D counterpart is. Sure, he’s got smoother animation, but, well...it’s as they say, it’s in the eyes.
It even starts with 2D...running out of material to stay alive.
Wow
your 100% wrong, 2d is not dying and 3d is not soulless at all! if anything 3d is MORE expressive than 2d and if 2d really WAS dying than it would be for a reason because people dont choose something just because they want to screw over something else!

@@puffleoftypos Dude this comment section is a bunch of people complaining animators are using 3D more because 2D is slower, even complaining they use it to make backgrounds, there's very little more Karen than being this pissy over all of this
also there are countless of amazing 3D anime (I don't know any movies worth talking about, they're great but there's nothing in them that'd not be possible with 2D animation, many have done it in fact) with extremely expressive characters, Land of the Lustrous (Houseki no Kuni) had some of the best animation I've seem to this day with much more dynamic camera movement than any media I've seem as I can remember now, Beastars had the characters moving at all times with their whole body, something that a 2D version wouldn't be able to do because of how long it'd take, and everyone here is calling it soulless, because it is heavily processed, WHEN 2D ANIMATION HAS GOTTEN MORE AND MORE AS WELL, if you look at traditional animation compared to current through the same lens you use to compare 3D to 2D, current 2D animation is nearly completely processed as well
Well I was gonna say,”Why’s this so underrated? It’s cute and *peaceful*.” Now I regret saying that.

Everyone is talking about the storyline and yes, it's one of the best i've ever seen but we need to consider the amount of work put into the art as well as the music.
Less of the storyline itself and more of the metaphor that the storyline represents. But yeah, the actual piece of art here and the effort that went into it, not just the message behind it, should definitely be highly respected. This whole thing is a beautiful expression of emotion.

3:33 acutally says his script, thats a nice feature. Jovan carl honestly didint think about reading the comment bubble. And yes, the cat read the script as he "interacted" with the comment bubble.
The fact here is that its basically the power to talk that set down the scene in a completely unexpected way, with some nice story, and, if you don't believe me, i swear you need to pause and unpause on that time. its the old reversed text if you're looking to see it.
It’s weird but out of all the lines of 2D cat at the end my favorite is, “Can we be serious?” It feels weirdly important. In a world where everything and everyone is covered in layers of irony the line hits hard.
I love how the ending is open to interpretation, rather than just showing us what happens. A lot of movies and episodes struggle to please everyone with the ending, but this one nails it in my opinion
I hope you know cliff hangers are more hated then endings cause id like to see the results especially annoying if youl never know what was gonna happen
@@Grimreaperedge If you really want to know what's going to happen, give the animation an ending you'd think would be the most viable. This can't be called a cliffhanger, as it's not a traditional story. It changed the moment the cat entered the hole, and even more when he came back to his conversation after being shot.
Like someone before you commented, there are near infinite ways that could've gone. Maybe after the cat spoke to his 3D version, he woke up from a food coma after eating all of that food in the beginning?
Or maybe he was still being held at gunpoint from earlier, going through another fictional scenario in his mind. You never know unless you come to your own conclusion.
@@hakarneuchiha9612 one that would be just stealing someones thing plus leaving us to that is indeed a cliff hanger like sure theres alot of videos like these but its kinda annoying to see a thing with a actual interesting part to see that it has no ending leaving you like crap i wish i never watched it cause now itz gonna be a lingering thought of who even the heck happened at the end and now i remember it would be copy right to take that. Like ive seen things like this but usualy its kinda what youd expect. But the unexpected kinda sucks when your left empty handed
@@Grimreaperedge Huh...okay then. This is gonna be a long comment, but I'll try to explain as best I can...
1) If you come to the same conclusion as someone else, that's not stealing. It just means you went through similar thought processes, or saw something that gave you a nudge towards that particular thinking.
You can't get arrested for that unless someone went all the way to their government just to get their opinions copyrighted. It'd be interesting to watch them try, but frankly it'd make the person look silly.
2) Even though I seemed adamant about this animation not being a cliffhanger, it's actually quite difficult to say for certain. Cliffhangers and Ambiguous Endings are very close to one another, and sometimes it's very hard to distinguish which one goes where.
However, I can say that this animation is, in fact, a cliffhanger. Ambiguous Endings are merely a sub-category.
Typically when TRUE cliffhangers occur, we know for a fact something terrible has happened to the main & or side characters, and there's definitely a follow-up to what's going on.
Ex: The screen cuts to black, you hear a gunshot in the background, and you definitely know a sequel is coming out.
In an Ambiguous Ending, we know the character is stuck in a perilous predicament, and the story ends, but without giving any leeway to either sides of the situation in question.
This causes a shift in perspective, and causes the audience to focus on the characters themselves. The Cat apologized to his counterpart, but the gun was still pointed at him as the screen cut out.
Would the counterpart forgive his 2D version? Did the 2D version deserve forgiveness for what he'd done? This is what the questions change to.
That's why I can say with certainty that I believe this animation to be rightfully classified as an Ambiguous Ending. Still though...I honestly don't have any response to your dislike towards cliffhangers.
Only thing I can suggest is that you take a different look at things, like I did.
Some of the best stories don’t have a true ending.

A gacha life video was just uploaded and it has more views than this, i have lost faith in humanity.
this animation gets even better once you know the story behind it
My outlook on this video:
The video starts as your everyday 2D animation about a cat going through it's daily life until it discovers a tunnel behind it's cat food. After the cat finds 3D Cat's food and makes a run for it the 3D Cat holds 2D Cat at gunpoint. It's here that we see 3D Cat and more "clones" (that's a surprise tool that will help us later) of 3D Cat. 2D Cat begs 3D Cat to not kill him, but 3D Cat doesn't care. After seeing people laugh at 2D Cat's life ending, we cut to 2D Cat being transformed into another 3D Cat "clone". Then we see the 2D Cat's soul get absorbed into a film reel. The soul we see leaving 2D Cat was his originality, his emotions, what made him special was killed off to be forgotten. Now about the 3D Cat clones, those are other 2D shows that have been killed by 3D Cat (I think 3D Cat is supposed to be an audience or certain demographic. People want 3D animations, not 2D cartoons. But by getting rid of 2D cartoons we get rid of what made them special. The other 3D Clones are also completely identical, they are all bland, boring, unoriginal. And then when 2D Cat finds the words to explain why he wants 3D Cat to spare his life he says how he "read the ingredients and no longer finds them appealing". I take this to mean that after seeing what other 3D shows are like, he finally gets it that he shouldn't become like 3D Cat. Even taking a closer look at the ingredients we see things like Crowd-Pleasing Ending, Marketability, Comedy, Standart Conflict, and at the very top, Meaning 0%. You see, this means that most 3D shows are predictable in the same ways, but just by taking a look at the contents of a 3D show you can see just how similar they are. Don't forget about the 2D shows, as they are way more original than most 3D animations today.
Damn, Thanks for Explaining it

Okay so essentially the message it's trying to convey is that 3D animation doesn't have the soul of 2D and he explains this in the video he linked In the description, it's the 3D animation is generic it has zero meaning just meant for comedy really you should look at the cans ingredients for 3D cats it tells you some stuff
3:34 he is finally gonna say these things: the thoughts, the emotions, the opinions, all unspoken. Put to paper only between the lines of his own script and notes. All words for him to say, but never actually spoken until now. That's how he imagines it, however, he ends up taking a moment, processes his raw emotion and abstract thoughts, and respectfully paraphrases what he believes his motives are instead.
Context: Jono had very rough highschool years, and never wanted to go to college in the first place. However, due to social pressures, he ended up having to go anyways. He ended up having a bad time as well, learning nothing and actually regressing on some of his previous natural skills, all the while remaining completely silent on these issues. For him formally learning art ruined the creative aspect for him, and he was afraid animation would follow suit. After being pressured to enter into the relm of 3d animation (something he greatly disliked), his creative aspect was still in jeopardy. For him, as his creative aspect slowly crumpled away in college, 3d animation was threatening to fulling murder it, alongside most peoples 2d animated careers. Thus, this short was vent art. A metaphor for his experiences. the short ends on a cliffhanger, for his story leaves off at the same point the cat's does, and the future remains uncertain

I think this is about the style of animation you find on youtube nowadays. Where 3D Animations are more popular than 2D, flash, all those animation programs. Where the can is heavily processed he means heavily processed by cg, vfx, music. Where he says his kind is more rare to find and their kind is more generic he means that in trends. Where Disney used to make charming 2D films, taken away by CG, 3D, Simulated movies like Wreck It Ralph, Frozen, that could’ve maybe just maybe been more... charmful in it’s animation style. Instead of hair, ragdoll, physics all made by a cold dead robot performing it’s tasks. Where flash ruled the land, and now it’s shutting down. Where we have advanced in tech and entertainment we lost in personality and style. But hey, I’m a stranger on the internet; forge your own opinions and theories.
this is actually true im pretty sure, also yes keep on doing this we need to save flash and 2D we dont need to destroy 3D to keep 2D we can keep both and it would be way better if we just have both, just please save flash and 2D we need to have 2D and 3D together and then it would just be way better than just one of them tho.

Writing this after watching the other video for added context.
I get being made uncomfortable by the ending sequence you went with. There are definitely some elements that are straight out of horror there. It's got a very disturbing tone through most of it. However, that disturbing element perfectly sets up the voiced lines that end everything off. By itself, 2D Cat's line would have just been a confusing anti-joke moment. With the context of everything else that happened in your ending - especially 2D Cat seeing an audience of 3D clones laughing at the original ending before being turned into just another 3D Cat himself - the message really shines through, and transforms the line into a really powerful message. Besides...sometimes art _should_ make you a little uncomfortable.
I think (and this is just a theory) one of the reasons why one would get uncomfortable and 'report' this is because it's a call-out to the education system he had to go through. This is a critique of 3d animation and how it is used to tell bland stories. It's also a subversion of this particular cartoony style of 2d animation, as it actually is a surreal horror. It's not even extremely standard horror, although it is there.
This isn't an animation, this is an art piece. It's a conversation. And I think some people aren't comfortable with animation beings that deep of a piece of narrative.
@@Nick_works I wouldn't call this an art piece. Its more a statement then anything, speaking from the heart and not being afraid to say what you really want to say.
KefkeWren Whie I do agree that the disturbing imagery was undeniably required for the ending to work, I feel as if it went to far with the disturbing imagery in some aspects. Specifically with the death scream and the bloody tears. They just kinda felt like overblowing it.
@@fatdude2763 isn't that the definition of art tho
“Art should make you a little uncomfortable” that’s not the actual point of this though. The point of it is, 3d art is replacing 2d animation and it’s hard to find 2D animation these days.

After watching the video Jonochrome made about how his classmates reacted when he showed this version, it feels so strange. The fact that the idea of the 2D Cat dying at the end of the animation was supported, however, the idea of a serious ending that reflects on how one might react when they're in a life threatening situation (or how a trauma may look inside an average person's mind) wasn't, is really just surprising.

I really like this animation. About half way through I thought of clicking off and going to find another video to watch instead because I didn't like the emotion I was getting from it. But sticking around paid off. The ending really spoke to me personally, and I really enjoyed seeing something new, something that made me think, something that made me feel certain ways. After watching your video about the response you got from it this animation just became better. It honestly feels in a way you already knew how everyone would respond, present at the very end. It's nice to see people doing what they want despite what others tell them to, going against what's "popular" and "the right way to do it" because what you do just makes you happier. When I tried to add more realism into my art style I got a lot more praise, but every piece I made felt fake and I didn't like how I felt when creating it. I was much more happy when I switched back to a cartoony style with a huge focus on shapes and stuff. But after I switched to the style I liked a lot of people began critiquing me on how weird it looked, how anatomy doesn't work like that, how humans aren't made up of shapes. It's what makes me happy. I do like sharing my art, I do like getting praised for it. But it's what makes me happy. Do what makes you happy. Like what makes you happy. You don't have to change yourself for anyone.

The "dream" the cat has looks like a metaphor for how 3d animation is killing 2d animation. When he got electrecuted he turned 3d while his 2d soul left him, this could mean that 3d animation is soulless and how 2d animation requires more passion and work than 3d (im not sure tho). And the last scene when the 2d cat is talking about the brand he's describing 3d animation, where its more popular and its really processed (like pc processed)

Amazing. It showed the relationship between 2d and 3d very well, and how the good brand was "hard to find nowadays", the animation was also amazing and the part in the 2d cats brain was horrifying.
I'm getting scared of the fact that people might misunderstand the message and start thinking "3D animation baaad, 2D animation gud"
yeah this hasnt changed anything about how i think of 2d and 3d animation, i think both are equally cool and i had to go to the comments here since i didnt get the meaning
I saw his newest video and it actually has a lot more to do with his college experience.
They're both equally capable of being baaaad. It's just that 3D is everywhere now, and good 2D is increasingly hard to find.
Then what IS the message?
@@alanbrito141 Its about a creative vision. 3D represents the crowd-pleasing one that everyone wants, 2D represents what the creator wants.
Dammit on that trippy reanimated side of youtube were every thing feels like a fever dream
This is underrated as hell.
It's been 2 years since I watched this and it still sticks in my head.
It's official, your teacher was wrong.
Is it just my half asleep brain or does this feel like a commentary on how 2D animation is dying
just take a quick look at the 3d can ingredients
@@known_questionmark oof
Everyone and there nan is commenting this.
Now that was one tasty animation with a wonderful garnish of commentary.
9 month later and this is on my recommended list
I refreshed the page for 5 times and it's still on it
I want this to be a game or animated seires.
Im not jokeing.
Its very very well made.
At first I was thinking “this got dark fast” but then I realized what this video truly meant.
Bruh im stupid
What is the deep meaning of this video ?
@@KienNgoQwert that 3d animation is overtaking 2d animation.
I still can’t believe a certain someone sent the cops to your house because they didn’t get the message or got a little bit spooked. Some people just aren’t open minded.
I did not expect it to be so thought provoking.
This is actually one of the best animations I have ever seen. The meaning and talking about how 3D is very oversaturated in modern animation, and with 2D creations turning into 3D creations, is very smart. And the animation is so smooth. Also when hes in the.... null zone? I don't really know, but he's, along with everything else, being reduced to ashes. This animation is better along with the two styles. Thank you jono.
I loved it. Still has that Jonochrome creepiness.
Kinda weird that the 3D guy keeps a pistol in his kitchen
You would too if you had a portal to another dimension in your closet
CurseFlame that’s true
It's a kitchen gun
I would say he's american, but he has 2 dimensions more than most americans so idk
what are you talking about always keep a pistol in my kitchen
I love how 3d cat's first thought was pull out the glock.
That was incredible! The voice acting was amazing it was so realistic! And the mix of 3D and 2D and just everything about it was excellent!
no idea why this was recommended to me but i love it
Lol hi didn't expect to see you here
Same, idk what my recommended is, but I liek it.
This animation isnt simple it actually has a point when the 2d cat talked about his and the other cat's canned food and said that his kind isnt very common as before he was trying to say that people nowadays rely more on 3d projects and they leave 2d programs to rot also the part with the 2d cat being shot is probably the old 2d animations getting forgotten
0:29 Can we just appreciate that he took the time to align the music with his steps?
This is an amazing animation, the amount of effort and time this must of took, it’s all beautiful.
In his mind it's a hole, in reality it's his bottomless gut.

My brain went straight to "the mind electric"
Especially "nuns commence incanting as the lightning strikes mine temples thus"
Hyperkitten 224 oh yes ! Now that you said that imma be stuck with that song in my head XD

SPIRALING DOWN THY MAJESTY I BEG OF THEE HAVE MERCY ON ME
After pausing and reading the food label this made so much more sense and became a lot cooler.
Me before watching the video: Aw, what an adorable animation.
Me after watching the video: Ok, what?

3D Cat: *The council shall decide your fate*
My take on this absolute masterpiece- Our cat protagonist represents older media creators who stick to their craft. The tunnel is a sort of Segway into the new media, in a search for more content The electric chair represents the creator being forced to change because this newer media, such as the “Can’t Food”’s ingredients and character, as it is more popular. The gun represents the new industry or supporters of the industry trying to kill them. The talk at the end represents the old industries kinder rebuttal.
Bad Triceratops That’s a pretty good theory. But it’s not true. All of this was to make a point about how 2D animations were being overthrown by 3D animations, that’s what the ingredients part at the end was about.
A Person But that’s pretty must the gist of it
I’ve been looking for this video for eight hours. I saw it a year ago and didn’t think much of it. After thinking about it for a while I realized this needs to be appreciated
While I'm pleased by the nice words, are you sure you found the right video? This one's only been out for four months.
I don’t actually know. I think I just forgot how long ago I saw this or I can distort time and space. Probably the former
*2D cat: Starts speaking*
*3D cat: SHIT WHEN DID HE START SPEAKING*
Man, I was just reminiscing on one night at flumpty's and it brought me back to your channel. Honest to god i have no idea how your stuff went unnoticed by me for so long, you are such a great artist and i admire you so much.

Man the bowling alley puts you in an electric chair when you get a strike as well! I thought the one I go to was the only one
Message of the story: Jonochrome said “fuck 3D, even if avoiding it makes me unpopular, fuck it, I’d rather do 2D”
That took a quick turn and I think that it's amazing!
