They aren’t pests though. They actually help keep insect populations in check, and really have no offensive abilities. I’m so happy this lovely couple saved this little darling. It just helps to show the world that these creatures deserve love, respect, and kindness, just as every other creature trying to survive on this earth. Thank you for your kind hearts, and giving her a good life.
They are Darling Animals whose only defense is to hiss or play dead and still humans malign them. All animals are worthy and valid under the sun and moon. Thank you for advocating for these wonderful creatures. They are delightful and loving and so darn cute. ❤

She was hurt or left alone by her mom so when they were raising her to keep her alive and then she got attached to them and she wouldn't be safe out in the wild!
She digs daddy's pouch! After you said what the vets recommended, there was a wink! She gets to stay, play, live, and love on you saviours!😂❤🌷

We had Black Star and her babies. Nothing. I’m telling you NOTHING was allowed to be on what became known at the possum highway in my house. Nothing on shelves, nothing on counters, nothing on the edge of the tub because apparently EVERYTHING belongs in a cabinet, on the floor, in the toilet/sink/tub. 😩 All I can say is my home became way more organized than I ever thought it could be because Black Star would make sure nothing remained in the way of her possum highway. Speed bumps just are NOT allowed lol
It makes me sad that people see opossums as pests; they're actually pretty helpful sometimes. They're effectively immune to both rabies _and_ lyme disease, and they eat the ticks that can cause some serious illnesses in people. They might get into garbage or gardens sometimes, but most wild animals are like that (raccoons, foxes, stray cats/dogs, rodents, etc.)
the saddest part of keeping them as pets is their incredibly short life spans... in this case for this species is about 2 years in the wild but up to 4 in captivity

It's actually very common in the US with smaller wildlife that have a good population size and aren't considered a threat to humans. "Let nature take it's course" type of approach. The designated facilities can only house and care for so many animals.

If they can’t be released by the wildlife center, the center becomes a zoo unless someone were to take the animal.
Possums are such cool animals. It's a shame their lives are so ridiculously short.
They live about 8 years in captivity. A lot of large dogs only live that long so it's not that bad really 🤷

I’m so glad they told you to keep her! Once any animal is brought up by humans, they don’t know how to survive on their own in their normal habitat, because they did not develop the surviving skills from their mommy while growing up. ❤️❤️❤️

Yes, she has become habituated to humans. This happens often, say in national parks, and it makes them then vulnerable to humans who don't value wildlife.

For an opossum she looks Marvelous!!!! What an amazing growth she's undergone. Great story and even greater example of people helping and going beyond their expectations.
I just saved my dying possum’s babies (she had 9) from her pouch and got them to a certified rehabber. Sorry for the loss of the momma. 😢. But hopefully her babies make it.

Not pests. They love to eat ticks and for that alone they should be protected and celebrated. As far as getting attached though, it can be painful as they have a very short lifespan.
Opossums are so unbelievably cute. Even when they give you the evils they're adorable, with their little angry faces pretending to be all tough and scary when you know they're just absolute softies.

Possums really don't get enough credit. They're immune to rabies, help control pest insects, and are obviously freaking cute, too.

It makes me so happy to see other people falling in love with these amazing creatures. We had rescued a tiny baby opossum two years ago during a hurricane. She wasn't able to be released so she became a very important member of our family. Her name was Peep. These animals are so loving full of personality. She slept in the bed with us, potty trained. Sadly we had to put her to sleep two months ago from medical complications. We have her ashes that stay above the spot where she slept in our bed. I never thought a opossum would steal our hearts and that we would truly feel a part of us was missing but she absolutely did. They are misunderstood animals and people have not been taught how amazing they are but the opposite. All animals deserve a chance, they deserve respect and as humans it's our responsibility to help the innocent animals have a chance at a successful life in wild or in some cases our homes. Rest in peace little Peep.
Thank you for rescuing her,she is adorable. I love possums and wish they were around here to feed but in the late 1990's to mid 2000's I had to feed them away from where I fed the stray cats because at least one of them tried to attack the cats when they tried to eat

So many people don’t value opossums. But, we have them in our neighborhood, and it’s so cool seeing them from time to time. They’re beautiful animals.
I'm not a fan of wild animals as pets _but_ in cases like this, when the animal has no experience in the wild because it required being rescued by humans to survive, if there is no procedure for releasing them in the wild, like most rescue organizations can do, I think the animal is where they'll be safest. She certainly looks happy there! There's probably nothing stopping her escaping if she really wanted to go. So I hope they have a long, happy and healthy life all together :D
