  • In this video, I will take you through the process of carving a walking stick / cane wood carving. In this one I created a cane from a maple stick with a granite ball top. This one started as a shorter piece of maple stick. In the video I take you through the steps I followed to carve the details and designs into this cane. Finished off with some Danish oil and bees wax and you can see the beautiful grain.

    Awesome work. I've just gotten into making some hiking staffs, as I'm walking home from work in the evening now and they come in extra helpful. Keeping animals and people at bay, knocking down webs and checking for trip hazards.

      exactly, they are extremely useful, and can be as simple or as ornate as you want to make them! I find them to be fun projects to work on. Glad you found my channel and thanks for watching!

    As someone who makes very SIMPLE walking sticks, I have to say that your work is AWESOME! I just give my sticks away--I enjoy making them, and people seem to enjoy getting them. But yours are really pieces of art. I have used your Celtic weave pattern on several, and it is great. Thanks for sharing your talents. Blessings!

      Thank you very much for your kind words! It's great to hear that you were able to use my videos to make some sticks. Yes, the Celtic knot is a good pattern on the sticks. Happy that you enjoyed the videos.

    Creating the end piece for the marble ball ended up really great, definitely something I’d love to tryout on a future project!
    I’ve just created my first ever hiking staff, I’d love to see your thoughts if you have time to watch it!

    DAMN, LOL, Look at the Grey in that beard! I was shocked when I noticed that,lol! I just SUBSCRIBED today. I guess it is about time, I have been watching off and on. I like your imagination. I do sticks, staffs, and canes now and then. My only regret is that, I can't carve, like faces. so I use My imagination to try and make a stick that might be interesting. I give them away rather than sell, I'm not professional and I don't think that I should charge for a stick, especially if for a fellow Vet!

      Thanks for watching! Yup, the grey keeps coming into the beard... No way to stop that! Happy to hear from a fellow carver. Glad you like making walking sticks and enjoy the videos

    I have a round brass ball from a foundry in the 1940's that I might try that. I am a beginner. Thanks for sharing your ideas .

      That would look great next to a darker wood (walnut or dark stained oak). I bet it will turn out great!

    Love the work you’re doing. A suggestion, slow down the drill press when using the larger forstner bits. They heat up easily and burn. BTW, subbed.

    Beautiful piece, Jason.
    I hope you don't mind but I linked this video in a walking stick chat forum I belong to. One of our regulars had a question a while ago asking for advice on attaching a stone topper to a stick.

    Did you use the 2-part epoxy to fix the granite ball? I didn’t see it mentioned, but perhaps I missed it. Great work by the way. It turned out beautiful

    • @JasonHedrich

      Thank you! Yes, I used epoxy and a 1/4" threaded rod to attach the ball to the wood.

      Can you tell how you fix granite ball with help of rod with wood either from upper side

      I would also like to know, did you drill a hole into the ball for the threaded rod then epoxy it in place?

    Hi. Great video and staff. What’s the brass end called. I’m guessing it’s a plumbing piece. But that would finish off my sticks perfectly. Thanks.

      Thank you! Not sure what the end cap piece is called but it is brass and I found it in the plumbing section, it seemed perfect for this stick and it worked out fairly well. Thanks for watching

    you didn't show how you brought the stain down to the granite ball without staining the ball. did you tape it off, or did it just rub off with mineral spirits or what?

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  6 днів тому

      Yes, I taped off the granite and carefully stained the wood with a small paint brush

  • @Gelovan682
    @Gelovan682 6 днів тому

    also do you have a source link for the ball and brass tip?

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  6 днів тому

      The brass tip came from Home Depot in the plumbing section. The granite ball was from a craft fair so I don’t have a source for that one…

    Se podra hacer con una piedra redondeada?.

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  6 місяців тому

      Yes, I've added a stone to the top of a walking stick. Check out my video of a stick for Scotland where I added a river stone

    How did you draw that pattern on the stick?

    • @JasonHedrich
      @JasonHedrich  6 місяців тому

      I usually do complete layout lines with rulers and exact measures… but on this one I mostly freehanded the pattern. It came out pretty well spaced despite the diameter varying along the length…
