I love to think of Fergus smiling down, seeing his work bringing joy to so many. What a journey for this song. He lives on, every time it's sung. What a moment for Glen and Marketa. Beautiful.
The musical is so simple yet so amazing. I saw it three times in one week while it was in Seattle. It just seems to give me tingles in my head every time I hear the music.
This song just gives me chills every time. I love it so much. ...I also can't help but laugh when I watch the cello player dancing and singing with thing. Such respect for that guy..
Saw the show when it toured in Orlando. I fully believe it's one of those that can only be appreciated live. This scene is so simple yet so memorizing, and the way the individual instruments reverb in the theatre is just stunning!
I went to the same college that Steve Kazee went to for undergrad, and I also did theatre. I met him, and he really is one of the nicest and most down to earth people I've ever met.
I see most of the comments here remark on how the music is too slow for their preference. I think it might be difficult to appreciate the music if you haven't seen the movie. It's a very intimate and organic process. The beauty comes from within and you must live in the moment. That's the main challenge I would foresee in adapting a movie musical into a stage musical. Having said that, I think they honor the heart and the sound in the stage adaptation, even though I will always love the movie!
It makes you feel you and the people on stage are part of the audience. It's a clever trick. Breaking down barriers is a big part of what Once is about. For some reason it reminds me of Las Meninas.
Saw the show on May 27th. One of the most deeply moving, and deeply felt, Broadway productions I've ever seen. These are people who believe deeply in the power of what they are doing, and I can't wait to go back and see them do it again.
Saw "Once" this past Sunday as part of a "cousin's club" night out in celebration of St Patrick's week. It was lovely and would encourage others to go see it if the opportunity presents itself.
This is so beautiful.. Brought me to tears! Thank you Marka and Glen for such amazing music and thank you to the company of Onece for this beautiful rendition.
I saw this last night in London.... I've seen many many show's, never had one that left me fizzy nosed all through. I have a swinging brick for a heart but the music from this show smashes it to pieces.
Saw South Coast Repertory's production of this last Wednesday! It's a phenomenal show that is an absolutely amazing thing to experience in person. Seeing the full ensemble playing all their instruments on stage together in pieces like this is spine-chilling in the best way.
Went to the Broadway show a month ago in NYC; the show was outstanding and this song sticks with you. If you have the chance go see the show, it's one of the most enjoyable Broadway shows I've ever seen... and get there early!!! You can go onstage and have a beer with the cast. Pretty amazing vibe. The stage settings and cast are unique, they all play instruments and sit on the sides of the stage through tout the show, and add their instruments to the performances at times to build up the song.
just saw this last week in NY and was blown away buy its simple brilliance and the music will stay with you long after you leave some of the most hauntingly beautiful music I've ever heard.
Saw Once last Sunday in Perth WA. It was absolutely amazing. Our only regret was that we went on the final day, so we couldn't go and see it again! But Once seen, embedded in our hearts forever💚☘️
Saw the show at the Hollywood Pantages this afternoon & found it GREAT. Fab music/musicians/actors, & I just LOVE the staging. Funny & moving (I cried 2x) & the pre-show onstage Irish music mini-concert is GRAND. I see comments by people who didn't like it, but theatre is so subjective & everything doesn't speak to everyone. Just happy that this show spoke (& sang) to me!
Totally agree with you! I saw it in London as part of my splurge spend for that city, and it was totally worth it, and I think moved me more than this video (though admittedly, watching it live probably is a huge part of the emotional experience).
Me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It must be amazing to see your baby have this kind of influence. To think it started as this little indie that made for 100 grand and what it has turned into.
Ah, 'her' - that was the third word! Fabulous job, cast of ONCE. 8 Tonys Thanks to all who created this magic: Fergus O Farrell of Interference, John Carney, Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova and the Broadway team that so richly deserve all those Tonys. Go see Once. Reminder: Glen Hansard is in The Wiltern on June 20th. His Rhythm and Repose album is coming out on the 19th. See the movie too and track everything you can down on these artists: Interference, The Swell Season, the Frames Glen and Mar ♥
There’s a lot of people complaining about how Newsies should’ve won instead of Once and as a fan of both I can definitely say that Once deserves the win.
Agreed. Newsies had a cool set, some incredible dancing and a few good songs but the plot was awful. Once was deceptively simple but at the same time very moving.
See this movie!!!! Even though there are songs in the musical that aren't in the movie and vise versa, it's AMAZING. Saw it for the first time yesterday. Now I have to see the musical!
I just saw it in London and I must say, I fell in love with the London cast. They were so amazing and when I listened to the Broadway soundtrack I immediately found myself hoping for them to come out with a London soundtrack. It's way better in london.
"i was born with a silver spoon....walking in the moonlight....if your skin is gold - how long before they start digging...:" amazing reversal of values...just shows you what is a positive culture lovee!!
This evening I saw 'Once' at the San Diego Civic Center and found the sound a bit 'thick' and loud! However, I also enjoyed the show - and the cleverness of the musicians/actors and staging. Yes, I would recommend the show.
See if you can rent, Netflix or just BUY the movie "Once" (which preceeds the musical by several years). It's a lovely, independent film that features the music of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, and of course, now, has been turned into this beautiful Tony Award winning musical.
Glen Hansard (who originally played "The Guy" in the movie and wrote many of the songs) actually spoke about this song at a show a few months back and said that the guy who wrote it actually wrote it from the perspective of an old indian chief reflecting on the earth and the land. In the show it's more from the perspective of being about a girl, but I figured I'd share the insight :)
May I ask what the name of this song is? I've never seen Once but, jus watching this I'm eager to watch it as soon as I can. And may I ask 'why am I crying like a baby listening to this song for the first time?'
I can tell you that this version is far better than the one in the movie. The film version is at a party were musicians get together and play. It was nice but this version is beyond incredible. When I saw it live, I started to cry.
Fun fact, Gold is the only song on the album not written by glen or marketa, it was actually written by glens very close friend fergus o Farrell who was the headman of the band interference. One of irelands greatest songwriters.
She is experiencing a moment of shock from how the moment takes over. The beauty of him succeeding and the song merely surprise her. Lyrics: And I love her so I wouldn't trade her for gold I'm walking on moonbeams I was born with a silver spoon And I'm gonna be me I'm gonna be free I'm walking on moonbeams And staring out to sea And if a door be closed Then a row of homes start building And tear your curtains down For sunlight is like gold And you better be you Do what you can do When I'm walking on moonbeams And staring out to sea 'Cause if you skin was soil How long do you think before They'd start digging And if you life was gold How long do you think you'd stay Living Hey Hey And I love her so I wouldn't trade her for gold
Spielberg said the movie renewed his faith in cinema.
Seriously? That's awesome
definitely lost it when i saw Glen and Marketa at the end…
I love to think of Fergus smiling down, seeing his work bringing joy to so many. What a journey for this song. He lives on, every time it's sung. What a moment for Glen and Marketa.
Beautiful.
The musical is so simple yet so amazing. I saw it three times in one week while it was in Seattle. It just seems to give me tingles in my head every time I hear the music.

Saw "Once" last year in Toronto. One of the Best musicals.
That man jumping around while playing the cello is awesome!
I went to the same college that Steve Kazee went to for undergrad, and I also did theatre. I met him, and he really is one of the nicest and most down to earth people I've ever met.
I saw this last week and it was amazing. Funny, clever, bittersweet. Unbelievable cast/musicians. So glad I got to see it!
Wow! I wish I could see this. I've been a long time fan of Once and this was a great rendition of Gold.
This is beautiful. I love how the originals singers are clapping like proud parents
The movie was the first date with the love of my life. Falling Slowly became "our" song.
Saw the original movie almost six years ago and loved it.. Wish the original got this much recognition, great movie
The original movie received an abundance of accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, I'd say that's recognition!
ganovane Ummm "Once" won the Oscars for Best Original Song (Falling Slowly), and not Best Foreign Film. But yes it deserves much more recognition.
ganovane It could not have been nominated for a Foreign Film Oscar as the category is "Best Foreign Language Film".
I saw this last night in London.... I've seen many many show's, never had one that left me fizzy nosed all through. I have a swinging brick for a heart but the music from this show smashes it to pieces.
Steve inspired me to play guitar, and dress more formally . . .
still gives me chills!
love the music!!!! they do such a wonderful job performing.
Saw the theatre version. Absolutely loved it live...
Saw South Coast Repertory's production of this last Wednesday! It's a phenomenal show that is an absolutely amazing thing to experience in person. Seeing the full ensemble playing all their instruments on stage together in pieces like this is spine-chilling in the best way.

Now thats some very beautiful music ! Absolute GOLD!
my boi Will jamming like a CHAMP
trashfilled mind YES
Love this musical. Saw it yesterday! My favorite! :)
just saw this last week in NY and was blown away buy its simple brilliance and the music will stay with you long after you leave some of the most hauntingly beautiful music I've ever heard.
I agree, so true !
go watch the movie.. you won't regret it.. but you may become addicted to all things Glen Hansard,The Frames,Swell Season, Marketa Iraglova
Saw Once last Sunday in Perth WA. It was absolutely amazing. Our only regret was that we went on the final day, so we couldn't go and see it again! But Once seen, embedded in our hearts forever💚☘️
He is brilliant! In a million years I could so that. He deserves all the awards!
Saw the show at the Hollywood Pantages this afternoon & found it GREAT. Fab music/musicians/actors, & I just LOVE the staging. Once, both the film and the musical, are phenomenal. Unfortunately they are very underrated.
I'm going to see this on the 26th and I'm so excited!
I really love this soundtrack! i can't wait to see it next year !
Love love love this!
went and say this on broadways this summer and it was truly incredible. by far my favorite show. its the most beautiful production ever
I love this show so much but seeing her come out and look around is just the most hilarious thing to me lol like girl are you lost???
I enjoyed watching and hearing this version. Very upbeat
Thanks. It's pretty great stuff! Really wanna see this the next time I'm in NYC.
Saw this at the DPAC in NC, phenomenal.
so excited to perform this :)
we should all be happy and enjoy this forever!
He’s SO GORGEOUS. And I fell in love with him on Shameless!
I want him. He’s just perfect. 😍
Rhythm and Repose is amazing! A brilliant follow up to the Swell Season music.
Utterly captivating.
this is my favorite music
I know! I just saw them in the front row it was so cute I'm gushing!
So beautiful !
The look on her face is priceless !
"To live, you have to love"… then he should have gone "I'VE GOT HAM BUT I'M NOT A HAMSTER!"
BILL BAILEY
Saw this on Broadway earlier this week. First Broadway play I have ever seen and might I say.....beautiful music and story
I saw it this summer - I loved it; I am sure you will too. Enjoy!
Totally agree with you! I saw it in London as part of my splurge spend for that city, and it was totally worth it, and I think moved me more than this video (though admittedly, watching it live probably is a huge part of the emotional experience).
Can't wait for it to come to London. One of my fave films with such beautiful music. Looking forward to see how its been translated to stage :]
Speechless...
good as gold !
Awesome movie

Awwww oh my gosh!!!! The orignal cast from the movie was there and they look so proud this warms my heart!
saw it on Friday in San Francisco and it's coming to Sacramento next April so i'm aslready looking forward to seeing it more then it's title.
I WANT TO SEE THIS SHOW SO BAD! I saw the movie at Sundance years ago and loved it! I want to see this play!
I did love it :)
Because it's one of the most beautiful stories on stage.

Agreed. Newsies had a cool set, some incredible dancing and a few good songs but the plot was awful. Once was deceptively simple but at the same time very moving.
People are only saying that because they think the main actor is hot and they saw it on Netflix
Saw this on Broadway a few nights ago. A must see show. Better in person than in this video.
Just got the cd it's great.
See this movie!!!! Even though there are songs in the musical that aren't in the movie and vise versa, it's AMAZING. Saw it for the first time yesterday. Now I have to see the musical!

can't wait till it starts touring :)
Saw this on broadway yesterday...well worth it
It's the mother from How I Met Your Mother!
"i was born with a silver spoon....walking in the moonlight....if your skin is gold - how long before they start digging...:" amazing reversal of values...just shows you what is a positive culture
lovee!!
Am I the only one particularly impressed by the dude playing the cello and doing that choreography??
Love Steve Kazee
they were both there watching it live. :D
I think it depends on how invested you are in the characters. There's no big 'wow' moments but it's very funny and sweet. The music is incredible.
im from ireland and the guy siging is fantastic especially with the accent
SUBLIME
I'll have to! Thanks

12 points :-)

Christie Ann Fields its called gold
+Christie Ann Fields This was 4 months ago, but you should see the movie, if you haven't already.
+Michael Dillon Thank U Michael.
I can tell you that this version is far better than the one in the movie. The film version is at a party were musicians get together and play. It was nice but this version is beyond incredible. When I saw it live, I started to cry.

I wish they had left the heckling in at the beginning. It's fine without, but it just makes it extra beautiful when they all join in.
Wow. Tony Romo can sing AND due play-by-play analysis.
Pippin is awesome
When u see the actual play the heckling is there. They probably just dropped it for the preformance on The Tonys.
Woo!! GO Zygo!!!
Maybe not gold, but Aaron Judge’s 62nd home run ball? Tough call. 😮
Markéta Irglová is so adorable.
Oooh so the beginning of the tonys opening 2013 was ironic, i knew it...
FALLING SLOWLY is on the Broadway Soundtrack
Gus Pfender, ladies and gentlemen. 👏🏻☺️
Will Connolly! You rock sir.
Why does the lady look up at the ceiling???:-O I haven't seen it.:-( It loks wonderful.:-):-DWhat are all the lyrics to this song??
She is experiencing a moment of shock from how the moment takes over. The beauty of him succeeding and the song merely surprise her.
Lyrics: And I love her so
I wouldn't trade her for gold
I'm walking on moonbeams
I was born with a silver spoon
And I'm gonna be me
I'm gonna be free
I'm walking on moonbeams
And staring out to sea
And if a door be closed
Then a row of homes start building
And tear your curtains down
For sunlight is like gold
And you better be you
Do what you can do
When I'm walking on moonbeams
And staring out to sea
'Cause if you skin was soil
How long do you think before
They'd start digging
And if you life was gold
How long do you think you'd stay
Living
Hey
Hey
And I love her so
I wouldn't trade her for gold
