So great to see everyone come out to celebrate Harry. It sounds like he was a wonderful member of the allotment. Very interesting test method for the apples.
Thanks PPG, Yes it was really great that a number of folks turned up to wish him well, he's a great gardener. Starch test very useful ( not just for cider making!) Cheers 👍
We did the iodine starch test on potatoes and apples when I was in grade three so you've taken me back 'quite awhile' there Woody LOL! Now I know why they showed us. Almost everyone used to have an apple tree then. Wonderful to see Harry & yourselves marking his wonderful tenure at the allotment.
Grade 3 LOL 🤣🤣 Funny how certain things stay in long term memory storage! Yes, it was nice that Harry's 60 years was recognised by the council. Take care and have a great day Marie👍🤗
Three cheers for Harry!!!! 👍👍👍, hope he enjoys his retirement away from the plot. Never seen that apple test before...the power of UA-cam...Nice one mate 👍
He's definitely earned his retirement mate! Starch test really useful if you're Thinking of making my cider or just want more indicators of when to pick/eat. Cheers mate 👍
Thumbs up to Harry, I'll be well over 100 years old before I get anywhere close to his experience on the plot. The starch test was a new one on me, thumbs up to you too mate :-) 🍺
Harry, you're knowledge must be vast!! What a tremendous amount of gardening that is... I would love to ask questions.. how things have changed over the years .. etc?.. he must be so full of stories.. Amazing. So nice that you gave him recognition for those years .. 60.. wow! The starch test is yet again, something I've only just seen. Quite scientific : ) Thanks for sharing it Woody. Cheers -- Elly
Hi Elly, on my site there was a chap called "Roy" who had also completed 60 years (possibly more) and his father was there before him! It is a big regret that I did not interview him before he passed away a couple of years ago - he was a magnificent gardener and totally dedicated to his plots (he had two, connected) - I could also say the same about a few other folks too whom I've known since I started out at 13 years old and are now departed. I'm glad I went to see Harry and that he got recognition. (and I captured it on film!) take care and have a great weekend my friend.
You can tell Harry was a '60 year career Cumbrian Allotmenteer', he was entirely not bothered by the rain ;-) . The starch test was really interesting, for some reason I thought it would show a graduation from the centre to the outside (or opposite) as the fruit ripens, but apparently not! Never seen that before, I wonder if it works on other fruit?
60 years as a grower😳. Well done. It must be sad to stop. Interesting e-bay preparation that give answer if apples are ripe enough for pressing. Is it the sugar content that is important when making cider? My dad always left the apples out until the frost, to make the apples sweeter. I also know that some people freeze the apples before pressing when making cider. Thanks for sharing, Woody.
Thanks for your kind comments Benni; Harry is a great gardener and I'm sure he'll be missed from that site. Yes, sugar content is really important in cider making as it will determine the ABV content; a low sugar content juice will need granulated sugar adding to bring the gravity to a good level. This is what I ended up having to do! Freezing changes the cellular structure of fruit, that makes it easier to press! Thanks for your kind comments Benni, I wish you a great evening 👍👍🤗
LOL, the town hall closed about a year ago and is being converted into flats. The current town council is now situated in a converted former public convenience 😀😁😁😁🤣
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Congratulations to Harry, well done. Take care, Poo
Best of luck to Harry. Fascinating apple check. Thanks for sharing 😊👍
Thank you for sharing his experiences. Hope we can learning more from them. God bless Harry
Definitely a helpful tip Woody! 😃👍 Congratulations to Harry!
Thanks guys, Harry is a top bloke who deserved a good send off from his plot.
Have a great evening 👍

Cheers mate 👍🍺
Very interesting on testing the apples. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome friend, thanks for your kind comments and time to watch 👍
Did not know about the starch in apples converting to sugar, or how to test for it. Informative for sure. 🍎🍎🍎💚
Thanks Laurie, it's a useful little test!
Have a great evening my friend 👍🤗

Well done Harry!! I can only hope to have 60 years of growing:))

Cheers mate 👍🍺

LOL 😁 you're right about Harry!
I think it would work on other fruits; eg: pears, bananas, quince maybe?
I knew about it turning purple with starch, never thought of testing apples though!
Useful test Tim👍
Well done Harry ;-) Nice science in action there mate ;-) Bon Bon ;-)
Apples all pressed now mate , video to come soon.
Cheers 👍🍺
Wow 60 years on the plot shame he's giving it up, hopefully all the apples pass the starch test.
It's a long time isn't it!
Pressed all the apples at weekend mate, video coming shortly.
Cheers Steve 🍺👍
