  • On September 28, the Republic of China Navy (ROCN) christened the first Indigenous Defense Submarine (IDS), the future ROCS Hai Kung (SS-711). According to the official explanation, while “Hai” refers to “Sea”, “Kung” refers to the island of Taiwan in an elegant way. It also has the meanings of “big”, “stealthy” and “unpredictable”, a perfect name for a new class of attack submarine.

The submarine is not yet complete and president Tsai celebrates it prematurely. The sonar and batteries are not yet installed, it is expected it will be ready for testing in May 2024 the earliest.
China currently has 79 submarines among which 12 are nuclear powered, more than what the U.S. has. Taiwan’s submarine is small, like a toy to China and won’t be able to impose any threat to Chinese navy.

The Taiwan Navy has successfully unveiled its self-made submarine, and will continue to implement testing and research and improvement work. It will continue to apply manned and unmanned submarines in force tactics, improve the development of underwater communication equipment and AI battlefield management, and build a submarine cave base. And the construction of deep-sea escape platforms and rescue ships, and integration projects such as submarine-launched anti-ship missiles, submarine-launched cruise missiles, and submarine-launched anti-aircraft missiles. Taiwan is surrounded by sea and is blessed by nature. As soon as it leaves the port in the east, there are readily available and free deep-sea resources in the Pacific Ocean. Through the introduction of submarine technology, it will gradually digest and absorb technology, complete the localization of parts and deep-sea detection technology, integrate military and civilian industries, and technology spread to related private industries and gradually drive the creation of a complete supply chain system for Taiwan's marine equipment manufacturing industry. Taiwan’s self-made submarines not only provide national defense security, but also bring huge business opportunities to cultivate Taiwan’s future deep-sea industry international supply chain.

Congratulations to Taiwan and ROCNAVY on the naming and launching ceremony of the "domestic submarine" "Kaiya" SS-711. In a short period of time (approximately 6 to 7 years from planning to launch), we have built the world's highest level submarine in cooperation with partner countries. I hope that I will be able to complete my schedule to the fullest, and that I will be able to raise the ROCNAVY flag next time, and that I will be able to safely set out on patrol.

Kinda weird, but the name of the submarine is "Hai-Kun", not "Kaiya". It might share similar Chinese characters with Japanese Kanji of "Kaiya", but it pronounced as "Hai-Kun" in Chinese.

Computational power is both national power and military strength. Efficient AI computation depends on high-performance AI chips, and only Taiwan's TSMC can manufacture the highest-end AI chips in the world. Taiwan's National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology has completely domestically developed technologies such as stealth materials, electromagnetic wave absorption materials, and multi-spectrum radar wave scattering materials. Taiwan is also the world's largest and most technologically advanced manufacturer of carbon fiber composites.
With these technological and industrial strengths, it will be a breeze for Taiwan to develop AI-powered missiles that are stealthy, can find targets on their own, counter enemy electronic warfare, and evade enemy detection. AI-powered attack drones, unmanned submarines, unmanned ships, and unmanned jet fighters will also be within Taiwan's reach.
Taiwan's military industrial development strategy is clear and unambiguous. It is to leverage its technological and manufacturing industry advantages to selectively develop military industries.

The per unit price of a Taiwan home-made submarine is estimated to be around T$49.36 billion (approximately $1.53 billion), while the per unit price of a German Type 212A submarine, which was released in the 2021, is estimated to be around 371 million euros ($394 million).
This means that the Taiwan home-made submarine is about four times more expensive than the German Type 212A submarine. Taiwan's so-called "homemade" submarine has only 30% domestic content, which means that 70% of its core components are managed by other countries that do not have governmental relations with Taiwan.
According to "Uncle Ko"- very talkative guy without brain, some core submarine parts were smuggled from the other countries without export permits to Taiwan. This will soon cause a lot of maintenance issues and affect combat readiness requirements.

    • @FloofyMinari
      @FloofyMinari 10 місяців тому +16

It's home made in the sense that they built the submarine in their own shipyards and did not purchase it.
Was it expensive? Yes, it took quite a while to build. However, it was the first submarine they've built.
What is significant is that they have learned how to build one and can build up on that experience.
Also, having components from other countries isn't a big concern. Guess what, if they bought a German submarine it would have been 0% domestic content.
BTW, the components were not smuggled. That would imply that countries had no knowledge of the technology transfers....they did.
For example, the Mark 48 torpedoes were thoroughly integrated via a joint project between American and Taiwan developers. Many foreign consultants were sent by companies to help build the submarine.
Not to mention, the U.S specially has the Taiwan Relations acts which allows Military equipment transfer with Taiwan.
Hey if the Chinese can claim their C919 is their own indigenous design, then Taiwan can claim this submarine is their own home-grown boat. At least Taiwan is honest.
