  • The following video compares the visual effects scenes from 2 versions of the classic Star Trek episode called "Wink of an Eye". On the left side you can see the original effects from the 1968 version of the episode, on the right side you can see the new CGI effects from the "digitally enhanced" version of the episode.

In fairness the original was designed for a Television audience with tiny screens some without even color and without a playback facility or freeze frame so it worked fine. This is why Robert Wise went way over budget on The Motion Picture in 1978/79. Paramount was up against Star Wars and and Close Encounters. So they brought in the special visual effects guy on those two movies Douglas Trumbull. Today everything is under the microscope. You get away with nothing today. Star Wars and Alien changed everything forever.

The film should be preserved without modifying the scene because of its value and also because of its valuable telling value, as people at the time imagined the future in general. As opposed to Norway Corp - Paramount using the same matte painting for several episodes. That was the same one used in Taste of Armageddon if I remember. Same with the WNMHGB and The Cage matte paintings. They probably had about 6. You never got to see anything of Vulcan but a red sky behind "the rocky planet" set.
How about the constant reuse of Sulu looking over his shoulder with the big screen having a different picture upon it. Exact same live action Naked Time shot reused about 12 times for Sulu and several times for Chekov to avoid paying them for a day's shooting, and make the motif work easier, boilerplate for the VFX company.

I actually like some of the new overlays. They give complexity and context to a society and civilization and gives a glimpse of their art, history, and culture.
I know many like the original, as I do, but I think we got to keep in mind this is just to demonstrate what is possible with classic shows and movies. This isn't a replacement for what will always be one of, if not the most influential sci-fi in history. But I do admit, I would like to see a true Imperial Enterprise with matching displays, controls, and design elements. It would be a far different ship. Colder, more militaristic and savage with harsher graphics and text, more emphasis on utilitarian or even luxurious design. And finally an emphasis on agony booths, targeting sensors, and weapons emplacements. A true Imperial Design.

    • @Starchface

Brilliant. I would like to see such an Enterprise as well. Utilitarian design for the crew, decadent luxury behind closed doors for the officers. An Agony Booth on every deck, a constant reminder of what is in store for those who step out of line. And if that isn't enough, McCoy's Agonizer waits in the wings. It would be a lot of work to update an existing episode in such a way though.

In any case, it was masterfully done. I don't for a second begrudge them super fast vertically unsynchronized footage reverting to the original backdrop, but you can see in the comparison that they futzed with the colour balance for consistency.

I like the changes of the ship in orbit around the planet and of the titles. At first I didn’t like the background scene with Kirk and the crewman but then I read a comment here that the original scene was a prominently reused background from another episode. So now it makes sense that they changed that background but it could’ve been nicer with more color and depth. Overall, I truly enjoy the CGI updates to most of the episodes with very few exceptions.

The original versions are more than sufficient. The newer CGI effects look good but are really simply not necessary. The digitization and recoloring of the mid 90's had already removed all the flaws that accumulated over time giving us a clearer image but there was no need to actually change the presentation other than to have fans purchase more copies.

the new effects are best for the ship orbiting the planets. much more detail but in this video, I like the original better. more color in that background of the city. I have watched this from when I was a kid back in 1968 and I still enjoy watching certain episodes for the 80th time. For instance I watched a docu on the vazquez rocks where they filmed the Gorn episode, shore leave and many others, including the next generation shows. so I was really enjoying Fridays child where they filmed a lot of this at that area. this area they filmed a ton of westerns over the years. I loved Fridays child, it was a classic star trek episode featuring an evil Klingon, an interesting alien race, julie newmar was great in it, and it had a lot of comedy. at the end where spock is wondering what "oohchie gootchie gootchie goo" is is priceless.

Watching these comparison videos make me wish that “Star Trek: Continues” would get the same treatment. I know it’s just a fan-made UA-cam series, but I consider it canon now. I like to think of the animated series as the 4th season and now “Continues” is the 5th.
These differences, between DVD and Blu Ray are making me want to watch every episode again. I love TOS and TNG.
Already have both on DVD, but the differences are awesome and made me spend about $200 on eBay for the two shows.
I’ll probably binge watch them both like I never have before.

Anyone remember an old low budget sci fi in which the astronauts return to their ship, just like Wink of an Eye, but time is basically slowed down so they're invisible to the crew. And this being the end of the movie, the lead man says to the lead woman, we may be the Adam and Eve of a new world.

I've never seen the "enhanced" effects, only the original. It does seem to me that a lot of effort was made for very little benefit. The phaser effect is an improvement, I guess, but do we really even care at this point? The original planet was fine. It's alien. And the backdrop of the city, I don't really think is an improvement at all. I like the original. In the slowed-down segment, the scene was desaturated to remove the blue, but you see the skin tones of the characters has also been lost. I guess it was too difficult to redo that sequence, too much effort. Anyway, interesting!

I’ve been a huge Star Trek Fan since the 80s. Other than the Enterprise looking better and more detailed in the CGI Version, the other enhancements add nothing to the Original and change the entire tone of the Episode, in my opinion. Other than cleaning up frames and perhaps adding some sharpening and detail, I don’t think the Original should be touched. Newer Fans will appreciate the Storytelling and not care about adding CGI.

Lot of comments here lamenting the loss of the older FX, but at least in the Blu-Ray you can easily switch between the different versions. I prefer the newer cg as used here, though usually I don't.
The problem with the original outdoor scenes is the lighting is all wrong. The cool tinted backdrop looks like a night or twilight scene but the characters are brightly lit, Kirk casts a hard shadow on the man behind him. The result is a disconnect between foreground and background, flattening everything and really emphasizing the artificiality of the scene. The newer background is arguably less dramatic but at least the scene has depth and the lighting is more consistent.

Everyone here's complaining about the statue and the city backdrop but the scene @ 2:26 really grinds my gears. They stitched together two separate shots into one continuous one in order to add phaser effects but they had to animate it and it just looks really weird and jarring. Notice, because Leonard Nimoy moves his hand between shots, they had to animate his hand going from his phaser to his tricorder, and the weird arm movements of the red shirts. It is a bizarre artistic choice on the part of the CG artists who made that decision.

I don't like the changes in color grading and removal of original backdrop which was OK considering it really was something only a 60's/70's artist would imagine for a futuristic alien city. UPDATE: Just to be clear after reading another post here by "Richard Hoffman" it seems that "A Taste of Armageddon" uses the same backdrop. From looking at the restored episode it seems the restoration people not only recreated the backdrop matte but also enhanced it and extended it. The episode uses the left side of the 3D backdrop while this episode uses the right side omitting the futuristic building in the background of course the statue had to be sacrificed LOL.

I think what is missing in most of these CGI is more natural dep of field, or replicating the way we as humans see or in this case would see a planet and a ship and the stars if we where actually in space and the size and distance from objects, our shifting focus etc. CGI makes everything in the image to crystal clear everywhere, we don't see things like that, If a chosen focus point was chosen and a faint blurring of background or what is not the subject, I think it would make things look more realistic .
Ever if the original was "imperfect" I think the original effects because it used film and lenses gave that sense of realism.
