This helped me a lot, thank you! I have been getting frustrated with my wooden wicks, I couldn't get them to stay lit. Your tutorial helped and now I've solved the problem.
I made wooden wick candles as Christmas gifts this year and had trouble with them tunneling and going out at first. This video is SO helpful, especially the myth busters! I tend to get overwhelmed, but your practical, easygoing style made me confident I can do this. Thanks for putting so much thought and effort into your videos!
Candle making has it’s own culture, it’s own world and it has a collection of really interesting characters. Making candles is intriguing. It has it’s roots in how our fore bearers rendered animal fats for lamps and finally bees wax was discovered eons ago. Candle making is noble, creative, artisan, necessary, fun and enjoyable and now intellectually speculative when the science of it is a discussion as to wicks and lighting efficiency. I found it interesting. Good video.
I have watched several of your videos now to realize that there is a serious science behind candle making. I also learned that I have wasted tons of money on poorly crafted candles. I am now off to start making my own. Thanks again for sharing your expertise.
Sir thank you for this, I’m new to the candle world and I tell you what getting a straight answer has been rough! Lol thank you for talking to me like a beginner and not someone with 15 years experience! I truly appreciate this video!
Just a tip I discovered using wood wicks. The wick clip made for the wooden wicks works great but is rather large. This causes the candle to not burn all the way down. This can be more of a problem in small candles. I have used wick tabs made for regular wicks by just putting a slot in the part you crimp down and inserting wood wick into this slot and lightly crimping. I found this works fairly well and burns all the way down.
Great info Stephen! I noticed it doesn't burn down all the way and was thinking maybe I should use regular wicks for small candles. At first I didn't understand but now I get it. You're referring to the round metal tabs to put the wick in? I haven't used regular wicks yet.
"It's a piece of wood, set it in fuel and it will burn" - love this video.....was thinking about releasing a few limited scents we have in beard oil products as candles and this is a great video!!!!! Thank you!
Thank you so much. I’m new to the trade and you just eliminated every other “teacher” I’ve seen. I hope the rest of your instructions are as clear, concise & practical as these. My first guess would be Army or Marine 1st Seargent just based on appearance and teaching style. Thanks again and I’ll see you in the next video. Subscribed, liked and shared!
What's your take on using mica with wood wicks? I've seen people use mica in the wax and seen people coat the wick itself with mica so there's a coloured flame? Would love to hear your thoughts.
Thank you for the video! I’ve been having issues finding the right wick so I’m going to back to the drawing board, test one more size, if I’m not happy with that, back to wooden wicks. My supplier didn’t have many sizes available unfortunately
I am so happy I came across your video! You literally answered all of the questions I had. Being in candle groups on Facebook and hearing so many different opinions on soaking wicks and trimming, etc. it’s so hard to know what’s right.
I love your videos. They been helping me craft better candles. I always been in making my own spiritual candles where I add oils and herbs to a vigil candle. But as of last month I decided to start crafting and making my own candles from scratch. Your videos has been helping out when it come to the cotton wick because my wick kept getting choked out in the beginning now they're burning just right thanks to you. I been wondering about wooden wick and this video is just perfect. I love your editing of your videos and the way you structure the delivery of the information. Flows really nicely. Thank you for the time for making this. I follow you on all your social media. Except pinterest I don't think i found a pinterest account for you which if you don't got one I think you should really utilize that platform it's meant for purchasing or making a purchase decision.
Thank you so much for the info. I'd like to start using wooden wicks with soy wax and I have seen some people using two wicks in one clip and didn't know why.
Sometimes 1 wick isn't enough to form a full melt pool when the mouth of the container is too wide. Having multiple wicks helps you achieve a full melt pool.
This was great, thanks, I have been researching "can you put coffee grounds in a candle?" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Panlijah Inconceivable Position - (just google it ) ? It is a smashing exclusive guide for discovering how to become a candle making master and turn a profit minus the normal expense. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my co-worker got cool results with it.
Thanks so much for this video. It’s very thorough in covering the different types of wood wicks and how to test them. I have the wood wick sampler pack as well and am in the process of making test candles. Your explanations during the testing was very helpful, what to look for, what is working and what is not working. Thanks again!!! 👍
Great video! I'd love to see a video or two on using dye. So far i've only used liquid dye, i'd like to see one on using dye blocks or a review on them. Or even a liquid versus dye block video.
Great Vid. thanks. As you say the testing stage is so important and has to be repeated if you make changes i.e.wax, fragrance etc. May sound daunting but the satisfaction you get from the feedback of your customers is well worth it!. Hopefully the U.K. market will add a lot more options to the wood wick range. Thanks again, and keep the video's coming.
Great video! It makes it easy to understand how to use and test wooden wicks. I am also impressed with your tutorial's video quality. Would you mind to share what equipment (camera, lighting, mic) you are using for your video shootings? Thanks for your answer in advance.
Tim, thank you for another great video! 2 years ago I started out with wooden wicks in 4 oz. tins (GB 464) and the first time around, got it wrong - and this is why folks you ALWAYS want to test FIRST! Fortunately I had only made 6 and went back to the drawing board to actually test correctly. I tried 3 different sizes and was never quite satisfied so I gave up on them. I loved the novelty of it. However, after watching your video I now see I didn't go far enough. So thank you, I have renewed hope and as always after watching your videos, more knowledge. I am going to try again as I would like to offer wood-wick candles on my site. Thank you Sir! I appreciate your generosity of time and information! :-)
Great video! What is the diameter of the tins you used? Thank you for taking the time out of your day to make such a thorough video! Thank you in advance for the response to my question re: diameter of the tins used! I was trying to read the writing on your tins and thought 1/2” was written. Is that correct? Thank you, I look forward to your next video!
My question for you Tim, is with the wooden wicks that you cut off can you use them for other candles if they are long enough to fit thecandle or is it just one use?
I made wooden wick candles and I don’t know why but when I burned them I felt stuffy, like if your near a burning bonfire and not in a nice way. It made my throat hurt and it was very unpleasant. I don’t really know where I went wrong?
I Love your Videos. You explain very well. I am doing Wooden Wick Candles and I am just a beginner. Can you tell me which size of the Booster Wick I should by for 4 oz - 8 oz and 10 oz? The Jars are between 2" and 4" in Diameter.
Hi Tim, new to your video's and I was very impressed your knowledge. I'm using Apricot/Coco wax and my candle vessel is 3.5 at the top. Would I use the 3/8" booster wick?
GReat info! Question, those wicks looked long enough to use the 'extra' amount in another candle. If long wood wicks is all we had on hand, are the wicks uniform enough to just cut in half and then use? Thanks for such good explanations btw.
You can certainly reuse any excess. The wicks that come in the sampler kit are 6-inches long. However if you were going to purchase wicks for a shorter container, you would want to buy shorter wicks to begin with because they would be cheaper. Say a package of 100 6-inch wicks was $15. You could cut them in half and have 200 3-inch wicks. But 200 3-inch wicks from the same company would cost you exactly $15. so you're better of to order the right size and let the factory do all of the work for you :)
Thank you. I ordered some wood wicks from the company you suggested. Could you suggest what wax or wax blend to make molded votive candles? The kind that is removed from a mould. One candle company said GW tart melt wax would work but it's not coming out of the mould. I'm desperate to find a wax to use for pillars and votives. Would like to stay with a soya or soya blend. I'm new to this and am using this coved virus time to perfect my candles so I'm ready for farmers market time. Also Candlescience company does not ship to Canada. Can you suggest a company that sells good quality fragrances that ship to Canada? Where do you buy your containers? Thank you so much
OMG Tim. You are the bomb dot com!! I've been looking for wick reviews this week. I'm new to candle making and started by purchasing the sample pack from the Wooden Wick Co. One of my biggest problems is getting the wick to stay light upon first lighting. The other problem is trimming the wick properly (low enough) in jars can be difficult. Sometimes it's really hard to get the scissors close enough to get a good cut. I've experimented with cutting the wick before placing in the jars. Help. Any ideas?? I really only want to use wooden wicks. Thanks
A few different options: you can trim before pouring and then try to pour to the exact length. If you cut them flush with the top of the container, you can fill to the right depth as long as your lid allows for it. Also there is a huge array of cutting tools available, from angled scissors to wire snips, you should be able to find something that will work with whatever container you are using. Or if you're like me, just don't sweat over it too much lol. Most of the ones I cut have a slight angle to them, but most of the time it's too small to notice and is still within range that it doesn't affect the burning of the wick.
I remelt them and add the wax to the "experiment" section of my shop. Basically turns to scrap wax that I can use when I need to experiment and make a mess in my free time lol
Wooden wicks do not need to be treated. Most burning issues are caused by leaving the wick too long, or overrloaded fragrance oil or dye. I get my wooden wicks from www.woodenwick.com
I just subscribed to your channel and been watching your videos for about2 hours now. I do have a question once you trim that wood wick and it's long enough you can use that for another wick correct, just put a wick clip on it?
Will wood wicks work in Crisco candles? I live in cold country and using these candles for the heat they give off under a clay flower pot. They work good for that and burn for a week on one can of Crisco with 2 flames, but the cloth wicks are under performing, they fall down.
As a newbie getting into candle making, what wood wick or Cotten wick would you recommend for an 8 oz mason jar that is 3.5” H with a 2.9” diameter? Fills about 7.9oz wax. I prefer wood because of the crackle and pop, thanks!
Thank you, Tim! You answered so many questions I had about the wooden wicks, which had kept me from getting them. Will definitely be looking into the sample pack.
Timber Ridge Gifts I didn’t double my wicks at first like you stated in your video but even then...they still burned fast. I would truly appreciate some more suggestions.
Yes! Just the video I needed these are my favorite candles and they are confusing! Thank you so much! Now I can finally try them! 😊🙌🏽 Question what’s the best wax for wood wick Candles?
For this wax/dye/fragrance combination it did. And for the most part it usually will. Better to go the extra step and test them all the way out just to be sure you're making the best candle possible though :)
As a firefighter, I'm really impressed with your commitment to safety & integrity. You set an example for the community.
I believe he’s a police officer himself. (Don’t hold me to that but I could’ve sworn he said that in another video)
Ahh thank you for your service
As a firestarter, I'm really impressed with his ability to make things catch on fire and stay that way. 😂
This helped me a lot, thank you! I have been getting frustrated with my wooden wicks, I couldn't get them to stay lit. Your tutorial helped and now I've solved the problem.

Im into making candles and your comment made just more passionate about it! Thank u ✨✨
I was thinking of quitting after seeing all the testing needed for wax and wicks and jars but this is a game changer. Thank you for posting.

It is the sound for me. I love it. Even more so than the fragrance.

Yes the round ones
@@864Country Great tip. Thanks
One other question. What do you mean you put a "slot" in the part you crimp down?
There is a small hole you cut a slit in that part that sticks up
Thanks for this. Some customers request these and I had no idea how they worked. Thanks again for all your informative videos.
Thanks for watching!
I really enjoy that crackling sound.
Very good tutorial. Now I have a little bit more knowledge of the wooden wicks
Thank you
The most informative video I have found for wooden wicks.
"It's a piece of wood, set it in fuel and it will burn" - love this video.....was thinking about releasing a few limited scents we have in beard oil products as candles and this is a great video!!!!! Thank you!
Great video. Now I understand why the flames are high on my wood wicks. Thx

This is the best method I have seen! Thank you 🙏 do you ever do wickless vessel testing with the wooden wicks? Where you just pour one?
I would've like to see a close up of them once you trimmed them. I had no luck getting mine to burn properly. Great video though thanks Tim
This is the perfect video cause I wanted to know why candles makers use wooden

Thanks for watching!
Pretty interesting stuff, I didn't know there was so much technicality that went into making a good candle.
Thank you so much for the info. I'd like to start using wooden wicks with soy wax and I have seen some people using two wicks in one clip and didn't know why.

OK, what did you do in your previous life? .. You are a heluva good teacher.

Thanks for watching!
thank you sir, much love from the uk xx

Definitely on my to do list. :)
i like the look of the over wicked one
Wow! Thank you! I love that sound.
Can you smell the wood burning??
Not really. If it was in an unscented candle, you might be able to catch a tiny wiff of it, but not much smell to it otherwise.
I did enjoy this video,I will try these now that I know more
Thanks for watching!
When this video first loaded i thought this guy's was gonna sell me a gun lol, great video.
I Love your Videos. You explain very well. I am doing Wooden Wick Candles and I am just a beginner. Can you tell me which size of the Booster Wick I should by for 4 oz - 8 oz and 10 oz?
The Jars are between 2" and 4" in Diameter.
You were great.. I loved that crackling sound.. 👍🏻
Hi Tim, new to your video's and I was very impressed your knowledge. I'm using Apricot/Coco wax and my candle vessel is 3.5 at the top. Would I use the 3/8" booster wick?
I make massage candles...I wonder if a wooden wick would be good for them?
Excellent tutorial thanks very much.
Thanks for watching!
Great video! Thank you so much!
This was so helpful! Thank you
Is it safe to remelt the wax for the candles that didn’t work for more wick testing?
Yes, you can recycle your wax. I’m doing it on 4 test candles.
Soooo helpful! Thank you for sharing your wick wisdom!!!
Thanks for watching!
Is that huge container candle sitting on your bookshelf. If so is there a video in your library of you making one. I'd love to see it.
The ones on the shelf are only half gallon size. Check out my video of me making a 2-gallon sized candle!
ua-cam.com/video/CoeaFHB8_DI/v-deo.html
Great video ❤️I’m currently learning What kind of wax you are using ?
Thank for the video! Can you share what Type of wood your wicks are? S pruce, cedar, maple?
You gave alot of important info on wood wick, I am ready!!!
I didnt hear the type and size of the wick you chose. And what size was your tin?
Thank you! I have 4 oz tin with a 3 inch mouth. What type of size wick should i get?
A lot will depend on the type of wax you are using, but for soy... a good wick to start with would be a booster wick, 3/8" wide .020" thick
GReat info! Question, those wicks looked long enough to use the 'extra' amount in another candle. If long wood wicks is all we had on hand, are the wicks uniform enough to just cut in half and then use? Thanks for such good explanations
btw.
You can buy extra wick clips and use the cut off piece in another candle. I do this with mine.
Help. Any ideas?? A few different options: you can trim before pouring and then try to pour to the exact length. If you cut them flush with the top of the container, you can fill to the right depth as long as your lid allows for it. Also there is a huge array of cutting tools available, from angled scissors to wire snips, you should be able to find something that will work with whatever container you are using. Or if you're like me, just don't sweat over it too much lol. Most of the ones I cut have a slight angle to them, but most of the time it's too small to notice and is still within range that it doesn't affect the burning of the wick.
Ty for this! What do you do with the candles after the test? Do you liquid and remake
I remelt them and add the wax to the "experiment" section of my shop. Basically turns to scrap wax that I can use when I need to experiment and make a mess in my free time lol
I have a question. I just bought some wooden wicks and they aren't staying lit :( do I need to treat them first? Where do you get your wooden wicks?
Wooden wicks do not need to be treated. Most burning issues are caused by leaving the wick too long, or overrloaded fragrance oil or dye. I get my wooden wicks from www.woodenwick.com
I found cutting wicks at a slight angle helps as well, what do you think?
Excellent video! Thank you so much!
Thanks!
I am sure you can still buy handbook with all info you need on woodprix. Just google it.
That's good solution to me too.
Hi! Very useful video! May I ask you where can I purchase wooden wicks? Thanks in advance!
I just subscribed to your channel and been watching your videos for about2 hours now. I do have a question once you trim that wood wick and it's long enough you can use that for another wick correct, just put a wick clip on it?
I can't see what wick size worked best, and it that a 3" wide container, and is that a double or single wood wick?
Lots of great information...Thank you for sharing!!!
2 questions 1. Can I pre cut 1 wick to make into 2 pc? & 2. Can u pre oil the wick in the fragrance oil?
Amazing, thank you. I am curious what you do with the wax and wooden wicks that failed the tests? Can you reuse the wicks again?
The wicks no, but you can recycle the wax
Will wood wicks work in Crisco candles? I live in cold country and using these candles for the heat they give off under a clay flower pot. They work good for that and burn for a week on one can of Crisco with 2 flames, but the cloth wicks are under performing, they fall down.
Can you use wooden wicks to make a pillar candle? Your advice would be appreciated.
Miss you Tim
Hi, first time using wooden wicks, I’m working with coco apricot wax with 10oz jars what wooden wick do you recommend? Thank you!
Thank you :) it helped me loads this video
Do you do this test on all your candle wicks
Perfect timing. I’ve been testing wooden wicks myself. Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
As a newbie getting into candle making, what wood wick or Cotten wick would you recommend for an 8 oz mason jar that is 3.5” H with a 2.9” diameter? Fills about 7.9oz wax. I prefer wood because of the crackle and pop, thanks!
Thank you very much for the video
Thanks for watching!
Glad I found this video ❤️
These are the ones I use fire the most part. TCS🤞🤔😁
I meant to say 😆 lol i use wood wicks they are so much better to use.i love them!!💖
Thank you, Tim! You answered so many questions I had about the wooden wicks, which had kept me from getting them. Will definitely be looking into the sample pack.
Thanks for watching!
Timber Ridge Gifts I didn’t double my wicks at first like you stated in your video but even then...they still burned fast. I would truly appreciate some more suggestions.
What wooden wicks worked the best as far as for size, flame and scent throw?
This helped me thank you ❤️
Yes! Just the video I needed these are my favorite candles and they are confusing! Thank you so much! Now I can finally try them! 😊🙌🏽 Question what’s the best wax for wood wick Candles?
Thanks for watching! There really is no "best wax." They will work great in any wax once you have them sized and trimmed properly.
Thank you so much!
Just curious if the recommended wick worked the best.
For this wax/dye/fragrance combination it did. And for the most part it usually will. Better to go the extra step and test them all the way out just to be sure you're making the best candle possible though :)
What is size wick would you use for a tea light?
What size wooden wick would you suggest for a 16 ounce widemouth mason jar?
Thank you for this video
