Turning old as a developer is hard. It is hard to stay relevant, hard to keep up with the competition of newcomers and hard to know all of those new frameworks, tools, languages and practices. However, the truth is that we oldies have a big advantage over the younglings.
We are slow! Slow is good! So whatever you do, don’t put your programming on the shelf just because someone half as old writes code with twice the speed.
Instead of getting frustrated over the pace of the oldies I really believe that we need to take a step back, embrace the skill of being slow and change the developer mindset to understand that the best way to go fast in the long run often is to be “controlled slow” in the short run.
In this highly interactive talk I will elaborate on the danger with the traditional “software developer life cycle” (developer - team lead - project leader - manager) and try to show how we instead can make those grey hairs your biggest asset, just by slowing down.

You had me at " the best place to work was an environment with perpetual learning opportunities". I absolutely agree and since I can't find that place I am trying to build it.

Wow !! "since I can't find that place I am trying to build it." The best thing I read today.Being in the same situation, I find it very motivating.

@@abhiramsingh29 Only at home I can use the latest versions of java and frameworks. In projects I'm forced to use obsoleted versions of Java and frameworks. So called seniors in the Netherlands only contribute to an obsoleted knowledge economy. They are not willing to learn something new.

@@vrjb100 Learning is an investment and the longer you can use your knowledge the better it pays off. Also, business people want things to be stable, well-understood and predictable. New versions may have some quirks, or build pipelines and tools must be adapted. In that case, changing is an investment, too.

I totally agree. The number one reason why our project is failing is because each sprint we rush to deliver something and never stop to take feedback and act on it. In two weeks time, another race starts, so we don't have time for that.

Isn't agile project management actually all about user feedback? Getting in feedback quickly and incorporate it into the project as quickly as possible.

A sample of people who can afford to attend an NDC conference, for this topic, is as representative as studying tropical biomes in Norway.

Great talk, I love the way this man talks about very important topics developers, software engineers, manager, testers, DevOps and all persons involved in the production of software are facing every single day.

loved this insightful talk which gives a better way to see our slower aging selves... So true software development shouldn't be a 100m sprint and long distance runners win in the long term

1.25x speed works best for me

I see what you did, but I stayed at 1x because I was coding while listening to this. So you could say I went slow while going fast.

The lower age of programmers is a direct result of the exploitative practices ingrained in our industry in the 80s and 90s when talent and a burgeoning worker pool allowed higher turnover and stagnant wages.

But it's definitely not working out in a time when programming became the foundation of the economy and the number of people qualified and motivated enough to do it didn't increase as much as its importance. In theory. In practice, the working market appears not to be very subject to supply and demand.
