  • Henlo! I am The President of Chickenlandia and I want to welcome you to Chickenlandia, a magical place where my pet chickens (and a few ducks) live an awesome life. In this video, I share a simple hack that I learned from my local wildlife rescue. It could keep your chickens from being attacked by predators and it's very easy to do. Hope you love it! #chickenlandia #welcometochickenlandia #urbanchickens

So upsetting to hear about the harm done to your flock, especially your little special needs duck. But I admire your take on the predators in the area. As you said they are only trying to survive and we encroach on their habitat. Best of luck to you and your remaining flock!!

I've been told another method for chasing away weasels which is confirmed by your video ! You pee in a bowl and pour it in front of the yard, the gate, fence or the chicken coop. Urine containes ammonia so it makes sense. :)) It's an option ! :)

Yes, predators dont care who is around when their hungry. I had a hawk almost get my Easter egger as I was working on something not too far away. Luckily I was able to run over like a mad woman screaming and waving my arms then it let go of my chicken, Reba! She was shaken up and had some blood by her eye, but she was ok. After that, I've been so paranoid and only let them free range when I can watch them "like a hawk"....🤣👍 I love my girls!

I live in the woods. My chicken house is like Fort Knox. They free range only when I’m in the vicinity. When occasionally I have lost one I consider it a woods ‘tax’, for living in such a great place with all these other critters.

Ive tried so hard to protect my girls! I am using the ammonia in a old container we drilled some holes in and put a soaked rag inside. I placed it about 10 ft away from my coop where our property backs uo to woods. I so glad you are back to doing videos!!!!

I am new to chickens this year! I have 9, month old chicks that I’m rearing and am building their outside home now. I live in Eastern Washington State. I love your videos and have learned so much. I absolutely agree with your natural approach at living with predators. They are only doing their own natural thing and we need to protect our domestic animals from them. Thankyou for your great and very fun videos!

I live in the city of Bellevue, WA, and at 11am, a bobcat chased my loathe to fly Orpingtons over my 6’ fence! The chickens flew across the street, right to some people. They got lucky, as my neighbors happened to have a large umbrella (this *is* the PNW!) and they sided with my chickens! No lives were lost. But now I’m really conflicted. Do I let my girls free range? They have a huge enclosed run, but they just stand at the door, looking out at the yard all day. They sound so pitiful!

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  3 роки тому +3

Oh my goodness! That’s hard. Some people decide that the quality of life they get from free ranging is worth the occasional loss of a chicken or two. But if you decide to keep them in an enclosed run, don’t feel guilty. They have more space than most chickens in the world. Make sure an give them some fun enrichment in their run and they will be fine. ❤️🐔❤️

Thank you for sharing. I just lost one of my rescue ducks here in Australia where we have a lot of foxes. She had flown out on to the broader property and we believe she encountered a fox. Like you I was sad however I also understand that the fox is also just trying to feed their babies and survive. Interesting you found the ammonia effective, we tip out the used cat litter tray contents around the perimeter of our animal run and apparently this will deter foxes here. So far we haven’t had foxes coming over into the run. Fingers crossed 🤞love your positive and insightful channel 💕

A raccoon tore through metal hardware cloth in our chicken coop window and killed a bunch of chickens. Plastic only works to keep flying birds out of the chicken yard. Raccoons are excursions in our area bcz people release them near our house that were caught in other areas causing problems. We caught 23 in a few weeks, sometimes 2 a day for several days in a row and I can assure you they were not the same ones.

Thank you for the ammonia tip! On a new journey to grow my own food and I started prepping my beds and planted some seeds and a few nights ago a rather large raccoon was about to get in my small bed. I tapped on my window and she back away and slowly walked off. I couldn’t get over at how clean and fluffy she was and that look she gave me of I’m sorry just smells good out here is the blood meal. This is of course my narrative. I chose to live in and around nature I have 3.25 acres and I always feel a rush of excitement when I catch a glimpse of a small red fox run by or a deer and doe eating my tiger lilies or my forgetful resident squirrel Charlie who now and again goes on a major hunt through my flower beds in search of his stash of acorns and walnuts. I can go on and on as we have so many wonderful animals we share our land with and like you I value them, respect the role they play as we do in the biodiversity and ecosystem we all live in heck I name any animal I see mor than three times and would always deter rather than immediately think of “ just ending their live”. High five to you sis👏👏👏😘❤️👍

Glad you shared this. Right now the most I have are possums and mice. Obviously the possums aren't doing a very good job with the mice and outdoor cats that I feed from neighborhood aren't really eradicating the mice either.
There have been some bobcats, raccoons and such around I've heard people reporting but so far haven't seen them.
Seems like the animals are all hungry this time of year and needing to eat. Really prefer not to harm them but just dissuade them from eating my chickens.
I usually have dry cat food out and the possums do make sure to clean all that up but prefer they eat that and not my chickens when their out. I will keep the ammonia in mind for around their area. Thanks for sharing this.

I use motion censor lights and also have white Christmas lights on the coop from dusk til dawn. I have seen the fox on my cameras walk up to the coop, the motion light clicks on, and he takes off. Now I know they might get smart to it, but so far it has worked. That hasn’t stopped the raccoons unfortunately. They don’t care. Fortunately my runs/coops are Fort Knox.

Thank you Madam President. I’m about to expand my coop but I cannot afford the hardware cloth, which I used for my run, for the expansion, only much weaker chicken wire ☹️ I’m glad to learn this ammonia trick. Do you have any suggestions besides this to help me with protecting my girls. I live waaay out in the boonies and we have more predators than I can count. I’m really concerned about the vulnerability that I may leaving my feathered family and it would crush me to lose any of them. Also, I’m curious about what you use as a barrier under your wood fence. Thank you for all the education that you’ve provided myself and others. I REALLY look up to you 💕 P.S. I love your new intro but then again I loved your previous ones

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia
      @WelcometoChickenlandia  3 роки тому +1

Thank you! If I were you and if you can swing it, I would double up on the chicken wire. You can do that around the fencing as well. It's not as strong as hardwire mesh but it's decent, and you can layer it so that the holes are smaller. It's more money but still cheaper than hardwire cloth. You can also bury thin slabs of wood down so they can't dig in, but it would need to be replaced sooner than later so I don't know how cost effective it would be in the long run. Always check craigslist and free cycle groups because you never know!

    • @chrisinedison

@@WelcometoChickenlandia That’s a great suggestion! I got a huge roll of 5’ tall chicken wire so I can definitely double up the wire. I also have some leftover hardwire mesh that I will cut in strips and skirt down and outward around the base of the chicken wire. I’m thinking of buying some inexpensive pavers and put those on top of the buried skirting. Thank you for replying and getting my wheels a turning. God bless!

Really off the wall question here. I used mostly untreated wood in my run. I started staining it today but realized how hard it was with all that hardware cloth stapled on the wood. So I decided to use a pump sprayer to cover the wood. The chicks still live inside but I will sometimes put them out in the run to get acclimated. I’ll be finishing up the stain tomorrow morning and was wondering how long should I wait before letting the chickens back out in the run after paint the stain? I’m guessing they are sensitive to things and I don’t want to take any chances

I live in a more rural area and had my first flock of silkies wiped out by likely a weasel. It's equal to someone putting your pet cat into a blender and tossing around the yard. I learned the hard way that weasels only need an opening of a quarter. Eeeks. Hawks are my bigger threats these days so hawk netting is my saving grace. I love your attitude about the wildlife. Live with them is my attitude.

I really don't understand how the netting could help with raccoons. Raccoons can tear through chicken wire like it's soggy paper...and netting would be nothing to them. I thought netting was only to keep out hawks?

    • @WelcometoChickenlandia

The netting I have is super strong, way stronger than chicken wire. But yes, you’re right, with enough time a raccoon could get through it. However during the day that’s unlikely to happen. At night it would be a big problem if all I had was the netting, which is why I secure them in the coop. :)

I have a few special needs babies and I am always worried about them. I have a runt khaki duck, a half blind rooster, and an attack survivor speckled Sussex currently, but I have also had a khaki duck with tendon issues that caused her to have a withered leg. The special needs babies tend to become our very close babies. When I lost Lady Hopsalot I was devastated. I am technically a Homestead meat and egg farm, but I love all my babies. Special needs and even retired babies are allowed to live out their days. The retired babies did their jobs well and deserve a good senior life, in my opinion. And the special needs babies should be loved no matter if they are different. I know alot of farms like mine don't carry that opinion, but I do. Just because they don't lay well or breed anymore doesn't make them useless either. My really old and retired farm mascot (Link the Lakenvelder) doesn't breed anymore, but he and his retired brown leghorn hen Sunrise both protect my Rowen flock, and they don't like anything around those quackers. Sorry for the loss of your feather puppies, and hope your flock stays safe from predators. (We call them feather puppies because our 15 year old guardian has to meet every chick on our farm and thinks the birds are all her puppies)

I lost my whole flock to a new dog in the neighborhood that I didn't know about until it was too late. 😪
I have just built a large run (I feel confident the coop is secure) from 10 x 6 chain link panels. I cant afford to cover it all in hardware cloth. But I have a ton of chicken wire! Will that be sufficient? Two feet up and two feet out! All the gates have been secured with an apron and hardware cloth. The run is covered by heavy plastic bird netting, not the flimsy stuff for berries. More like a deer fence with 1x3/4 in holes.
    Will this be enough?

I found my duck this morning tore open and its been are only lasting duck for a while. I new i should have tried harder to get him in his pin but he just loves being out in his pond. I don't understand how I don't hear a struggle at night when it was close to the house this time. I feel so bad when this happens, like is there a way to prevent it or hear the attacks.

I have a bobcat issue. I have netting up but it jumps through it. I can't use hardware cloth for the top because of the way my run is set up. I will try that ammonia trick until I can trap it! We have had bobcats ever since I got chickens but this one is out at all hours of the day. I start throwing old eggs into the woods so maybe she can feed her babies more idk.

Not only do we not want to disturb an ecosystem but the raccoon is only doing what the raccoon has instincts to do in order to survive. How can you ever blame someone or some creature just for being themselves, being what they are designed to be. Great vid. Thank you for the tip.

Something grabbed one of my hens and broke her wing off. All I can think is, she was near the fence and something grabbed her and tried to pull her thru and only got a wing.
Shes fine, but there is just the stump of a wing on one side. I trimmed the feathers on the other side to help her be more balanced..
My question is : Will her wing grow back..

Predators have really deterred me from getting more hens in the future. We are also from PNW and never had issues with predators for 6 years. Out of no where we lost 3 hens. It was extremely disturbing and after our current chickens and turkeys pass likley wont be getting more. The only reason I was furious over my hens death was because they didnt eat the hens only killed them 🤦‍♀️

What happens with hawks is sometimes they get startled, and leave. More often they eat the heart and liver. Dogs are just excited about the chase most of the time, if they are pets, because they are not hungry. I can’t explain ferrets, minks, skunks etc.

We keep our chickens in our large barn. We kind of became relaxed about them and locking the doors not thinking about weasels. But one afternoon during watering of our two cows I found 1 guinea dead (her kneck, and legs was bleeding). I called my husband out and we rattled a pile of wood and out ran the weasel. So we proceeded to clean up everything we had put on the floor(because it became a catch all). We thought we were okay but the next morning 5 more hens were killed. Very sad. I poured our used cat litter from their box all around the barn outside. I put my dogs poo around any entry ways at the doors. And each night we caught all our birds and put them in the chicken tractor (and I filled all holes with spray foam to extra protect from weasels) and locked them up. We have motion lights all around the barn on the ground by entry points as well. All this has worked and we have not had anymore attacks. Some of our hens go into the chicken tractor but their are about 6 that fly up to the rafters. We too love all of our farm animals. We have a small hawk that comes around and even comes into the barn but has not messed with our hens, seems like it is often scouring the pastures looking for mice or rats (and yes we have those, always an issue). Thanks for the wisdom!
