One of the reasons that I value you to the degree that I do….is your compassion. Not just for the chickens, but the wild animals as well. THANK YOU for being decent.
I've watched several of your videos today that led me to this video. I lost my beloved rooster Thursday to a predator. Probably a coyote. I have been crushed. My heart has just ached. Until I watched this video. He had a good life and he was loved. Thank you for helping me get beyond the heartache.
Mother raccoons go out in the day so as not to leave them unprotected at night - thanks for giving good information and not getting vindictive toward the raccoons!! I’m a wildlife rehabber - mainly raccoons
Ive tried so hard to protect my girls! I am using the ammonia in a old container we drilled some holes in and put a soaked rag inside. I placed it about 10 ft away from my coop where our property backs uo to woods. I so glad you are back to doing videos!!!!
After stressful day at work I love coming home and chilling out with my Silver laced wyandotte hens and Golden laced wyandotte hens with one silver laced rooster watching them forage around and sometimes pecking at my boots. Thanks for sharing knowledge protecting our flocks.
I am new to chickens this year! I have 9, month old chicks that I’m rearing and am building their outside home now. I live in Eastern Washington State. I love your videos and have learned so much. I absolutely agree with your natural approach at living with predators. They are only doing their own natural thing and we need to protect our domestic animals from them. Thankyou for your great and very fun videos!
So upsetting to hear about the harm done to your flock, especially your little special needs duck. But I admire your take on the predators in the area. As you said they are only trying to survive and we encroach on their habitat. Best of luck to you and your remaining flock!!
I've been told another method for chasing away weasels which is confirmed by your video ! You pee in a bowl and pour it in front of the yard, the gate, fence or the chicken coop. Urine containes ammonia so it makes sense. :)) It's an option ! :)

Thank you for the video! We have a few raccoons that visit our backyard, along with our three chickens. While we adore raccoons, they did manage to take two of our chickens. Despite this, we don’t want to get rid of them; instead, we’ve decided to reinforce our chicken coop to keep everyone safe. We actually enjoy watching the raccoons and chickens coexist. Raccoons typically don’t stay long-they move on in search of easier meals. My 13-year-old daughter insisted that we not harm the raccoons, so we built a stronger coop. Now, with the changes in place, our whole family is happy in the end.
I live in the city of Bellevue, WA, and at 11am, a bobcat chased my loathe to fly Orpingtons over my 6’ fence! The chickens flew across the street, right to some people. They got lucky, as my neighbors happened to have a large umbrella (this *is* the PNW!) and they sided with my chickens! No lives were lost. But now I’m really conflicted. Do I let my girls free range? They have a huge enclosed run, but they just stand at the door, looking out at the yard all day. They sound so pitiful!
Oh my goodness! That’s hard. Some people decide that the quality of life they get from free ranging is worth the occasional loss of a chicken or two. But if you decide to keep them in an enclosed run, don’t feel guilty. They have more space than most chickens in the world. Make sure an give them some fun enrichment in their run and they will be fine. ❤️🐔❤️

I use motion censor lights and also have white Christmas lights on the coop from dusk til dawn. I have seen the fox on my cameras walk up to the coop, the motion light clicks on, and he takes off. You can takee an electric pulseing hot box for dogs or small predators. Use 1/2 inch PVC tubing drill holes 2- 6-12 inches from ground string hot wire thru holes .pull tight and you've got 24/7 defense.that won't kill but repels .make sure it's pulseing not constant
Good info. We had racoons invade our coop one winter. It was a literal bloodbath enhanced by the white snow. It completely changed our lifestyle. Now, we always make sure the chickens are safely locked inside the coop every night.
I'm in San Francisco and they definitely come around in the day. They kept pooping near an exterior wall. I finally realized how their paws are so delicate. I cleaned up the area and put lots of pine cones. End of problem.
Actually, ammonia is not particularly toxic unless you mix it with bleach. Your body makes ammonia basically as a byproduct of the food we eat. It's in your urine, which incidentally can be used in place of ammonia, if you're not squeamish about that sort of thing. Probably with better results.
I found my duck this morning tore open and its been are only lasting duck for a while. I new i should have tried harder to get him in his pin but he just loves being out in his pond. I don't understand how I don't hear a struggle at night when it was close to the house this time. I feel so bad when this happens, like is there a way to prevent it or hear the attacks.
I need help my mom was home alone and heard my chickens hollering and she went and it's was a fox we have them in a pen with tin 1 foot under and we have chicken wire and a roof and anything I don't know what to do :(
I feel really lucky, so far my biggest annoyances are chipmunks and some Thrush, even though we live in a high predator area surrounded by woods. But, we use an enclosed run and the coop is super secure.
Thank you for sharing. I just lost one of my rescue ducks here in Australia where we have a lot of foxes. She had flown out on to the broader property and we believe she encountered a fox. Like you I was sad however I also understand that the fox is also just trying to feed their babies and survive. Interesting you found the ammonia effective, we tip out the used cat litter tray contents around the perimeter of our animal run and apparently this will deter foxes here. So far we haven’t had foxes coming over into the run. Fingers crossed 🤞love your positive and insightful channel 💕
A rat or rats ate my new baby Soramas two days old cry😢 Theyve been eating my eggs. I got up this morning and I put my 5 wek old bantum polish outsude in front yard in moveablenlittle chicken house. I fell asleep (Im siick) I bring them inside in cage in spare bathroom at night. My husband forgot to bring them in. I went to feed them this morning and one in corner dead half eaten and I dont see hownit got in. But it doesnt have a bottom on it. Must have dug under.😢 I didn't think theyd be out during day but now Im really concerned
Thank you for sharing the information because right out of the blue a few days ago something got to my ducks in the middle of the day and it cough me off guard and now from your video I no what to do
How does your chickens and other animals react to the ammonia smell? Do you think it may help protect outdoor cats, without getting the cats to leave as well? So sorry about the loss of your birds!!
I'm so sorry that happened to you! Thank you for this great tip. I love your view on being better protected vs killing or relocating. I'm 100% with you. Love your channel. Checking out your vid on MUD next. I, too, live in the PNW (SWW near Oly). Wet wet wet wet weeeeeeeeetttttt..... Hahahaha.
Thank you for the ammonia tip! On a new journey to grow my own food and I started prepping my beds and planted some seeds and a few nights ago a rather large raccoon was about to get in my small bed. I tapped on my window and she back away and slowly walked off. I couldn’t get over at how clean and fluffy she was and that look she gave me of I’m sorry just smells good out here is the blood meal. This is of course my narrative. I chose to live in and around nature I have 3.25 acres and I always feel a rush of excitement when I catch a glimpse of a small red fox run by or a deer and doe eating my tiger lilies or my forgetful resident squirrel Charlie who now and again goes on a major hunt through my flower beds in search of his stash of acorns and walnuts. I can go on and on as we have so many wonderful animals we share our land with and like you I value them, respect the role they play as we do in the biodiversity and ecosystem we all live in heck I name any animal I see mor than three times and would always deter rather than immediately think of “ just ending their live”. High five to you sis👏👏👏😘❤️👍
I lost my whole flock to a new dog in the neighborhood that I didn't know about until it was too late. 😪 I have just built a large run (I feel confident the coop is secure) from 10 x 6 chain link panels. I cant afford to cover it all in hardware cloth. But I have a ton of chicken wire! Will that be sufficient? Two feet up and two feet out! All the gates have been secured with an apron and hardware cloth. The run is covered by heavy plastic bird netting, not the flimsy stuff for berries. More like a deer fence with 1x3/4 in holes. Will this be enough?
Glad you shared this. Right now the most I have are possums and mice. Obviously the possums aren't doing a very good job with the mice and outdoor cats that I feed from neighborhood aren't really eradicating the mice either. There have been some bobcats, raccoons and such around I've heard people reporting but so far haven't seen them. Seems like the animals are all hungry this time of year and needing to eat. Really prefer not to harm them but just dissuade them from eating my chickens. I usually have dry cat food out and the possums do make sure to clean all that up but prefer they eat that and not my chickens when their out. I will keep the ammonia in mind for around their area. Thanks for sharing this.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia A weasel got in our run and killed 10 of our 18 girls while we were at work. I was in shock for days. Weasels may be cute, but they kill just to kill. They have very sensitive noses so we've been sprinkling cayenne powder around the perimeter of the run. It's been working really well except for having to be reapplied after a day of rain. We also got a surveillance system to watch the run, the coop doors and inside the coop to make sure everyone's safe inside when the doors close.
I live on the coast. Our raccoons are not nocturnal. They operate with the fluctuation of the tides. You will see them often during daylight hours when the tide has go eout
Peppermint oil works really well to keep the critters away...I've even used chopped up original Irish spring soap bars....lol....Thanks for the videos.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia We just had a red tail hawk come in our back yard, we was very lucky it didn't get and of our chickens. Our back yard is not big so I didn't think a red tail would ever try to get out chickens but I was wrong 🥴 .
I had a scrawny young raccoon try to go after my chickens the first night I put em outside. Welded wire fencing is key and having a trail cam pointed at the coop is not a bad idea either. I dug down and put cinder blocks into the ground also to keep animals from digging but their way in but I've heard laying fencing on the ground works also
I really don't understand how the netting could help with raccoons. Raccoons can tear through chicken wire like it's soggy paper...and netting would be nothing to them. I thought netting was only to keep out hawks?
The netting I have is super strong, way stronger than chicken wire. But yes, you’re right, with enough time a raccoon could get through it. However during the day that’s unlikely to happen. At night it would be a big problem if all I had was the netting, which is why I secure them in the coop. :)
@@WelcometoChickenlandia except if it’s pods from a magnolia tree don’t ask .. cutting it down didn’t go my way .. how many people did u have helping with that netting it was just us two , n we ended up sending that expensive netting back ... was no way to hang it without strangling each other first
@@JudyZimShadHomesteader I hope you get the magnolia stump removed too. We did because I was going to put a bird bath or feeder on it. It is still alive and keeps growing new branches and leaves.
I've been so nervous about putting the baby chickens in the coop because we see fox every night here we live in the woods like 10 ta 15 mins to a town around us this helped so much thank you
I’ve had raccoons come out in day hours many time and slaughter my girls. Always in spring early summer. Nursing mama raccoons was my guess. Great info!
I have a bobcat issue. I have netting up but it jumps through it. I can't use hardware cloth for the top because of the way my run is set up. I will try that ammonia trick until I can trap it! We have had bobcats ever since I got chickens but this one is out at all hours of the day. I start throwing old eggs into the woods so maybe she can feed her babies more idk.
Oh man! Have you contacted your local wildlife rescue? That’s what I would do at this point. They may be able to give you some resources or even trap and relocate if it’s coming into your yard like that. Good luck!
So sorry this happened to.your flock. I’m binge watching your videos . I just love your channel and the chickens🥰 I’m just so curious to know. What does the FIRST MAN think about your love and obsession for the chickens?😁 I can honestly say I have my husband scratching his head sometimes over all of the chicken videos I watch. I just can’t help it. He may try to get me a chicken obsession shrink. JS😂😂😂
Haha The First Man is very supportive! Although when I first started and I didn’t know how to do things in a cost-effective way, he would say each egg was $100. 🐔🤣❤️
I lost 1 of my favorite bantys that was a little older and it was an ashole cat from my neighbor I hate how irresponsable people are, I hear raccoons stick their hands inside and pull the neck close and even if they can't eat bird they kill them, I seen a fox at 7.30 am in the middle of the city. I was anew owner and I dint have a run they stay out for about 4 hours till my son came home, at the time I dint see hawks, I had to take a day off from work and hire a helper to built a run with hardware cloth, I hear to collect a man's 1st morning pee and spray around the area, I have not try it but I am about to and will let you know what happened.
love this video! I completely agree with your opinion! we live in their territory and need to just do what you did and protect our gardens/chickens etc
We keep our chickens in our large barn. We kind of became relaxed about them and locking the doors not thinking about weasels. But one afternoon during watering of our two cows I found 1 guinea dead (her kneck, and legs was bleeding). I called my husband out and we rattled a pile of wood and out ran the weasel. So we proceeded to clean up everything we had put on the floor(because it became a catch all). We thought we were okay but the next morning 5 more hens were killed. Very sad. I poured our used cat litter from their box all around the barn outside. I put my dogs poo around any entry ways at the doors. And each night we caught all our birds and put them in the chicken tractor (and I filled all holes with spray foam to extra protect from weasels) and locked them up. We have motion lights all around the barn on the ground by entry points as well. All this has worked and we have not had anymore attacks. Some of our hens go into the chicken tractor but their are about 6 that fly up to the rafters. We too love all of our farm animals. We have a small hawk that comes around and even comes into the barn but has not messed with our hens, seems like it is often scouring the pastures looking for mice or rats (and yes we have those, always an issue). Thanks for the wisdom!
Ive trapped a couple raccoons but today was insane. A redtail hawk swooped past me and almost got my favorite chicken! So now I've got to figure out some solutions. Black chickens? Plastic decoy crows? My girls need their free time
I put giant rocks about two feet down and then around the perimeter of the run i put large rocks. I also have wire mesh under those large rocks afixed to the run on the outside. We dont have racoons or foxes around but plenty of coyotes. Everynight i see the motion lights going off and on (due to the rabbits mostly) and the camera is set up with motion and sound activation which will alert my phone. Never would I have imagined how i would be so dedicated to the welfare of a few chickens. Crazy! But my chickens give me eggs all the time so its my duty to keep them safe...lol
Thanks for the great advice. I have a problem with eggs going missing during the night all sealed up except for an area that a cat might fit also no evidence of egg shells or dead chicken's. Any idea what can carry eggs up a wall?
Really off the wall question here. I used mostly untreated wood in my run. I started staining it today but realized how hard it was with all that hardware cloth stapled on the wood. So I decided to use a pump sprayer to cover the wood. The chicks still live inside but I will sometimes put them out in the run to get acclimated. I’ll be finishing up the stain tomorrow morning and was wondering how long should I wait before letting the chickens back out in the run after paint the stain? I’m guessing they are sensitive to things and I don’t want to take any chances
I n not allowed a rooster where I live , so have to buy in hens I only buy from two breeders who vaccinate all hens pedigree breeds and hybrids to full commercial standards I’m in the UK so they are vaccinated against all diseases that could affect hens in the UK including salmonella: Love the beautiful and clear information you pass on us all. With love to yours and your delightful flock.
@@poollofindro5886 Awww sweet chickens. Thank you for rescuing them! I would try placing them on the roost at night. Alternatively, you could just let them sleep on the floor and make sure it stays clean with fresh bedding.
@@poollofindro5886 you may try a low roosting bar nearer to the ground then lift it up as they get used to it. Possibly a ladder/ramp up to the bar. Just some ideas. Here's to hoping they figure it out.

You can also put lights up and it makes predators go away as soon as the light comes on !! ...even bears will run away. 👍👍
Great idea!!
I had a mother raccoon and three babies
Hanging off a bird feeder on the back porch when I turn the light on they just looked at me
I just love your heart! Great video.
Thank you!!
If you put a wildlife camera out there, you will be surprised at what’s coming around! 👀
Thanks for this tip. I have already had problems with possums and raccoons this spring
A rat or rats ate my new baby Soramas two days old cry😢
Theyve been eating my eggs.
I got up this morning and I put my 5 wek old bantum polish outsude in front yard in moveablenlittle chicken house.
I fell asleep (Im siick)
I bring them inside in cage in spare bathroom at night.
My husband forgot to bring them in.
I went to feed them this morning and one in corner dead half eaten and I dont see hownit got in. But it doesnt have a bottom on it.
Must have dug under.😢
I didn't think theyd be out during day but now Im really concerned
Thank you for sharing the information because right out of the blue a few days ago something got to my ducks in the middle of the day and it cough me off guard and now from your video I no what to do
How does your chickens and other animals react to the ammonia smell? Do you think it may help protect outdoor cats, without getting the cats to leave as well?
So sorry about the loss of your birds!!
Interesting. I've not heard of the ammonia rags strategy. Thanks for sharing this.
You're so welcome!
Hahahaha.
Haha it is so wet up here! Thanks so much for watching. 🐔❤️
One thing I know is predators always go for the easiest meal. Defenses up. I like how happy and bubbly you are.
any info on the netting you used to cover your chickens?
Thank you so much!!
WOW great idea! Thanks for the video! Love ya! Any tips for helping pulleys grow and gain some weight? Not to eat mine are feeling a bit skinny?
Have you ever considered fermenting their feed? :-)
The actual " HACK " is told at 4:55 so skip on to that if you are here for that.
I lost my whole flock to a new dog in the neighborhood that I didn't know about until it was too late. 😪
I have just built a large run (I feel confident the coop is secure) from 10 x 6 chain link panels.
Thanks for sharing this.
okay but those weasels are cute though, lol. Wow I never know about this! It sucks loosing animals. Glad this helped!
They are cuties aren't they???
Hello, I'm having issues with squirrels. Would this help them stay away?
The squirrels are destroying my chicken coop
Peppermint oil works really well to keep the critters away...I've even used chopped up original Irish spring soap bars....lol....Thanks for the videos.
Awesome thanks for sharing this! Do you use landscape mulch in the chicken yard?
What kind of netting did you use, and where did you get it?
Mt Baker in the beginning of video? I am from Bellingham. Live in Florida now ☀️🌴🩴🌊
Where did you get your netting and how did you get it to stay up so high?
There’s a link for it in the description! It was attached to the house (I moved recently).
@@WelcometoChickenlandia
We just had a red tail hawk come in our back yard, we was very lucky it didn't get and of our chickens.
Welcome to Chickenlandia I have to know what netting this is...!? Hi from Washington state as well! PNW is the best 🏕 🌲
@@lynseybender me too ! I’d like to know
@@WelcometoChickenlandia me also
What do you do to keep your ceiling-netting clean? from tree leaves, bugs, etc.
You know, it really doesn’t get stuff on it and when it does, it usually just blows away with the wind!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia except if it’s pods from a magnolia tree don’t ask .. cutting it down didn’t go my way .. how many people did u have helping with that netting it was just us two , n we ended up sending that expensive netting back ... was no way to hang it without strangling each other first
@@JudyZimShadHomesteader
Thanks for the warning about 2 people hanging out netting. I was thinking of going that way. I will have to think again.
Have you had a good snowfall yet?
@@JudyZimShadHomesteader
I hope you get the magnolia stump removed too. We did because I was going to put a bird bath or feeder on it. It is still alive and keeps growing new branches and leaves.
How often do u need to refresh the ammonia rags
How long does one rag soaked with ammonia last for ?
It depends on your environment but I would try to replenish them every couple of weeks.
@@WelcometoChickenlandia thanks
What is the netting made of?
I've been so nervous about putting the baby chickens in the coop because we see fox every night here we live in the woods like 10 ta 15 mins to a town around us this helped so much thank you
I’ve had raccoons come out in day hours many time and slaughter my girls. Always in spring early summer. Nursing mama raccoons was my guess.
Great info!
Yes it's awful! I'm sorry that happened.
Where the hens free ranging hen it hapend ir in the coop? I am sorry to hear.
3 of my chickens out of 5 were MURDERED by a bobcat one is hurt how do i save her?
What does the FIRST MAN think about your love and obsession for the chickens?😁
I can honestly say I have my husband scratching his head sometimes over all of the chicken videos I watch. I just can’t help it. He may try to get me a chicken obsession shrink. JS😂😂😂
Haha The First Man is very supportive! Although when I first started and I didn’t know how to do things in a cost-effective way, he would say each egg was $100. 🐔🤣❤️
So the netting makes hawks and raccoons unable to get in?
I’ve heard that too! Let me know how it works. 😃
Possums, fox, raccoon, skunks, coyote, bobcats ,mink, stray dogs, bears, wessels , owls , Hawks, and Col. Sanders all are after my hens .
love this video! I completely agree with your opinion! we live in their territory and need to just do what you did and protect our gardens/chickens etc
Can I squirt ammonia on the dirt around the chicken coop instead?
I n not allowed a rooster where I live , so have to buy in hens I only buy from two breeders who vaccinate all hens pedigree breeds and hybrids to full commercial standards I’m in the UK so they are vaccinated against all diseases that could affect hens in the UK including salmonella:
Love the beautiful and clear information you pass on us all.
With love to yours and your delightful flock.
My chickens keep sleeping on the floor and they are not standing on the roosting bar. Any solutions?
How old are they? Young ones take a while to get the hang of it but they will learn!
@@WelcometoChickenlandia they are 19 months old. I rescued them from an egg farm so I don’t think they are used to roosting at night
