The opening of D minor Concerto at 1:52:20 is one of most astonishing passages I've ever heard in a Classical music video. Who knew that Handel could sound like late Romanticism! When I initially heard it I thought I had accidently moved to Boris Godunov because it sounds so similar to the Dmitri motif. As it went on if I didn't know any better I'd think I was listening to Mahler or Shostakovich. Incredible harmonic texture from Handel and an excellent choice of timbre by the performers! This has become one of my favorites.
Handel bridged the late Baroque and the early Gallant movements. Much of his later orchestral works were influenced by the Gallant, which was structured like the Baroque but featured simpler themes that were less ornamented than the early and middle Baroque periods. The Gallant movement turned into the classical period of Mozart, Hayden and Beethoven.
Ditto what qariss said..... Musicologists get exited when they hear musical-ideas-out-of-time, even if most listeners might consider them out-of-place...but those moments can be very memorable especially for extremely nimble ears.. But I never tire to wallow endlessly in Handel's organ concerti, with his endless profusion of musical ideas, and the aforementioned reduced-ornamentation-and-terraced-dynamics of the late baroque...Handel's organ concerti are simply intoxicating....
@@qariss Handel doesn't sound Galant at all. His style is clearly High Baroque, contrapuntal, but he was cosmopolitan so his style has a bit of each country he visited, but it's quite different from his Galant (Rococo) Early Classical contemporaries like Hasse, Quantz, Pergolesi, Stamitz, Porpora, Graun. I agree with @DerekSuszco that these many of these concertos transcend classicism and have a romantic vibe.
Just to emphasize an earlier comment - keep those bloody ads OUT OF THE MIDDLE of the music. I don't know if that is the fault of the operator of the channel or if it is done by UA-cam, but I do not care. Hypnotically beautiful!! ...one of the greatest pleasures in life are Handel's organ concerti! Many thanks for this upload! Please consider a credit to identify the painting.
The first one is "Landscape with a rainbow" by Rubens. (You can find all these for yourself if you use the snipping tool to save the picture and then use the Google "search by image" tool [to the right of the microphone icon])
I am certain a confusion with the title of this video exists, because a 2:19.05 time was introduced a transcription ot clavecin. It would be highly recomendable give credits to orchestra, solists and director. I write from Mexico.
...count on Neville M to present the most-beautiful rendition of the music! I've heard many versions of these pieces, and Sir Neville's is surely among the very best: phrasing, dynamics, tempi, and musical storytelling! In these performances the organ is beautifully-balanced against the orchestra, and never drowns it out, or vice-versa...the very-popular #4 in F is a perfect example...
Una hermosa versión con gloriosos instrumentos "modernos", suntuosos, opulentos, aterciopelados, de bello color y textura, afinados. En suma tal como le gustaría a Handel.
Probably the best and certainly the most sumptuous music he ever wrote, and these recordings do more than justice to the most voluptuous and innovative composer of the Baroque, including, in this case, Bach, Vivaldi, Dominico Scarlatti, and Telemann.
Again - regret to mention that obnoxious interruptions (ads, like anything else) will have the opposite effect than that presumably intended (buying something, subscription or whatever). Will anyone who appreciates classical music allow him/herself to be pressured into paying for anything via boorish noise? "Put-the-ads-before/after-the-music." Simple, no?
@michaeldavidrubin....with all due respect, I do not understand why you can't part with the equivalent of C$11.99/month for the benefit of having unlimited access - 100% ad-free - to as much classical music your heart and soul requires and maybe enjoy a movie or two on the side?! I enjoy listening to my "0-1800" type of classical music from subscribed-sources such as YT, at my home-office or at hotels when travelling; or through SiriusXM when in my company-vehicle (anywhere in North America....imagine driving across Canada &/or the USA without having to change the radio-station once...LOL. The last movement of Opus 4, Number 1 is played like the orchestra and the organist are going to a fire. Slow down! It takes the beauty of this piece away!

I prefer Karl Richter's playing on a large organ. I know, Händel probably played it on a small organ, but he would have used full organ plus pedal, if he had one in front of him.

Agree. I think that Händel in his Organ Concertos was ahead of his time. In many movements it reminds me of Beethoven and composers of romanticism.

Истина. Ја га лакше разумем него Баха. Мислим да је Бах јако тежак за слушање, посебно за музичке лаике. Хендл је угодан за ухо.
Handel has the best melodies of Baroque and probably the entire classical music, one after the other, it is quite amazing.
bach and bach for both imo
