As for the dark season, my tip: do go out in all weathers, even if it is a short walk. Life feels so different after being out the fresh air and getting cozy afterwards with a cup of tea or the like feels wonderful. With time, you could consider actual sports such as skiing or biking in winter. I admit that part of the feel good factor comes from feeling like a bad ass doing winter sports.

When you go shopping in the winter and walk there. It's -22 C outside and +22 C inside the mall. Then at the door you'll do the winter tango: gloves into two pockets, wooly hat into a pocket, open your jacket, both the popper list on the outside and the inner zip, and unroll the scarf from round your shoulders making sure it's tucked under the jacket at the back of your neck, so it won't fall down, stomp the snow from your boots and all this in the time it takes you to walk 10 steps!🥶🥵

Is this why the big shops like Prisma have lockers? So people have a place to put all their winter wear when they do a long shopping trip.

    • @toweri_li
      @toweri_li 2 дні тому +15

@@espotpod No, they are mainly for heavy bags of things you may have purchased from another shop. Not taking those things inside the security gates can save you from a lot of hassle, if they, at the first shop, have forgotten to remove or deactivate the anti-theft devices. (If you buy things from many shops, make sure to pick up the receipt at the cashier. That's your proof, easily at hand, that you had purchased the items elsewhere.)
Most often people just leave their overcoats on, but open them and remove hats and mittens, like 'KariLepola' described above.
But if you prefer, most certainly you can leave your heavy overclothing there! There's no rules, no limits. :)

It takes a while to train your "eye" so that you can find the tables with the good stuff (usually I find most things I like on one or two tables). About mustards: I would recommend "Turun sinappi" (the green one is mild, red is pretty strong and black is really strong) and "Kotisinappi" which is closer to Swedish mustard and has much more sugary taste. I used to use only Turun sinappi for a long time but nowadays I'm using Kotisinappi only.
Suitable amount for black Turun sinappi is a couple of pea sized blobs for a single plate, Kotisinappi requires usage amounts closer to average ketchup.

Official THL recommended amount for vitamin D supplement is 10 µg per day but many think that's way too little. Values in range 50-150 µg has been suggested. According to some studies, you can get 200 µg worth of vitamin D in your body from spending half an hour in sunlight during a nice summer day here in Finland so having recommendation set to 10 µg makes very little sense.
I'd recommend doing your own research about vitamin D. The Finnish Wikipedia page about it seems to be pretty well written.
Also note that due historical reasons, some products still use "IU" units instead of SI compatible µg.

The traditional Finnish mustard was Turun sinappi ("mustard of Turku"), but the company was sold abroad, and the new owner moved the production abroad. A new brand Auran sinappi ("mustard of Aura", referring to the Aura river in Turku) was established, and it gained a large market share. Later the production of Turun sinappi was also moved back to Finland (though not to Turku). Both mustards come in different intensity levels (I'm not sure if that's the correct term, but you understand what I mean).

Moomin mugs are collector's items and hold their value. Some are no longer made, so they will actually become more expensive as they become rarer. Marimekko and Iittala are other brands that hold their value well. A lot of Finnish brands are really good quality, made in Finland or at least in Europe and last a long time.
For mustard, Turun Sinappi (mild or strong, both good, and there may be a super strong one as well). Yes, mustard is to be used sparingly 😁! French mustard is also nice and the wholegrain mustard can be used in cooking and in salad dressings.

In Finnish flea markets, the seller rents the table and prepares the sale ítems with pricetags. The manager of the flea market receives the payments at the cash register.
The "owner" still has to visit the table every day to re-organise after customers have been rummaging around the items.
What Finnish flea markets are great at is children's clothes for babies and toddlers. Kids grow fast, so they can only use a piece of clothing for one summer/winter. It is not considered a stigma for the family if their kids wear pre-owned clothes in the daycare, preschool or primary school. Most people do it, not only low income families. Of course, it s sometime difficult to find what you need from a flea market, just like you said.

I don't know if you like sports, but here in Finland we have floorball. Maybe try to go to a game. Happee is in Jyväskylä. Many people from abroad feel strange about nudity. We have got very strict hygiene rules in public spas and people have to get naked in the dressing and showering areas in front of other people. There is very little privacy in these areas except they are separated in between of genders ofcourse. If you don't feel strange about nudity or think you are able to overcome with it spa is a very valid option to boost up energy during winter.

You mentioned UFF, do they have UFF Vintage in Jyväskylä? There's a bunch here in Helsinki, I like going to those a lot. Normal UFFs are nice and organized too and very clean (no flea market smell) but they are full of H&M, Prisma clothes etc fast fashion that I don't really trust not to break soon after purchase. Vintage UFFs are a bit pricier but these are survivor clothes from decades past and I've got some incredible finds from there, even found a friend some near unused real doc martens for less than 40€ and myself an incredible suit pants & jacket pair for 27€. Plus, you'll probably experience this in Jyväskylä too but UFF does often do a sale where everything in the store is just 4€ or something when they change selections.
Sidenote; It's good that you're in Jyväskylä outside the summer, since Jyväskylä somehow geographically is a magnet for the cold and rain in the summer. A dear friend of mine lives there and every time it's been sunny and hot in Helsinki it's been rainy and cold for him in Jyväskylä 😅

So it translates to "There are two things I will never give up, Turun Mustard and..." The ending was always different, but the idea was that out of everything in life a Finn will never give up or change their mustard. It has to be Turun Sinappia. (There was a small hick up, when the company shifted their factory to Sweden, and people got really upset over this. That's when Auran Sinappia started to make the same mustard also in the Turku area... But now the Turun Sinappi ha s also returned back to Finland)

It's really sad that Jyväskylä has gotten rid of a bunch of their 2nd hand stores lately. There was an SPR in Kortepohja and a Talentti just below the stone Harju steps until recently. There also used to be a Salvation Army shop (Pelasturarmeija) in Seppälänkangas that later moved to the centrum, but now it's gone. They do have Sovatek, Talentti and UniQtori in Seppälänkangas all at very close proximity to eachother. SPR in Seppälä and a bigger one in Palokka, and I think at least 2 other flea markers in Palokka. Several differend 2nd hand stores in the centrum (eg. UFF and Rebel in Sokos +that one straight up from the compass), Talentti at Sammonkatu and Fida at Tapionkatu etc. Plus separate events. They had 2 or 3 flea markets in the centrum walking street this summer with people setting up their own tables. And I know they have some flea market events in the spring and summer at Keljo Citymarket parking lot (and during winter, sometimes inside).
I really prefer shopping clothes in the organization style stores where they arrange them by type etc. Because there's just less of aimless wandering about, but I do enjoy the other type too when I'm not looking for anything specific. When I moved to my own place from parents I bought most of my dishware, curtains, tablecloths etc. from such stores. And most of my furniture from Tori.fi. I don't think I bought anything other than electronics and cleaning supplies new. Really saved so much money. :D

Because the winter is long and dark, we have vitamin D added to milk, so drink up me hearties yo-ho. Turun Sinappi, mild. It's great, perfect balance of sweet, salty and mustard. The hotter you go, the more likely the mustard is spiced up with the good old chili peppers. So instead of getting more mustard, you just get more heat. I like sweet mustard. Koti-sinappi (Home mustard) is my fave. I apply it generously on pea soup 😁 Sounds gross but pea soup with smoked ham and fried onions is actually delicious. It's comfort food.
We're going to have unseasonably warm weather for the next two weeks. I'm expecting the first snow to fall after that, in early November, and stay until the end of April.
It's not always like that. If you have a cold and rainy summer, winter weather might be rainy and unpredictable as well. But we've had a long and hot summer this year - I've been swimming in Lake Päijänne since the heat wave in May and up until mid-September - so winter promises to be a proper winter as well.
Crisp and cold winter temperatures mean sunshine and glistening snow whereas temperatures around zero mean overcast weather and dirty wet snow. I prefer proper winter weather. I try to go for a little walk at lunch during the dark season so I can catch the sun, although I feel that my batteries are fully charged after the summer we've had.
It all balances out over the course of the year, you see. What you miss in November, you get back in May or June, with the sun blasting at full force at 3 AM and birds chirping like crazy. It's difficult to sleep when nature is so full of life that I actually welcome winter hibernation. Putting up Christmas lights early makes this season enjoyable.
There's a Christmas season opening ceremony at the city center on the 23rd of November. I'm sorry you missed the City of Light festival at the end of September. It's hugely popular among people of all ages. I'm hoping that there's a mini festival of light in Paviljonki in January or February.

    2. Renata trying Xhot wings sauce in Hook: ”This is so mild! Gotta try suicide sauce next time but I doubt it’s spicy enough for me”
    😂😂

I’m not a mustard expert but I always buy Auran sinappi. I used to buy the most traditional one, which is Turun sinappi, but then the production was moved from Turku to Sweden(?!) and then to Poland. Now it’s manufactured in Finland again, but I can’t forgive the sweden years.

Was the brand of the mustard you bought "Poppamies"? Because that's the only case in which I can see that buying a "mild" mustard would actually be pretty hot. "Poppamies" make various products that are VERY spicy, and their "mild" is every other producer's "hot" or "very hot". Their "hot" will blow your socks off. 😂
Usually in Finnish brands, "mild" means that they may have opened a bottle of chili in the same room where the product was being made. It's practically no spice. 😆

Explaining the consept of fleemarket AKA kirpputori AKA kirppari AKA kirppis is wild. How else would those work? Seller being there all day everyday? It's not an yardsale. Although sometimes there are kirppis events that are more an yardsale. 2 best kirppari in JKL imo are UniQtori (ex-kirpparille, near Citymarket in Seppälä) and Silinteri but thats a bit faraway, but there's a big SPR-store near.

    mustard
    noun [ U ]
    us /ˈmʌs·tərd/
a yellow or brown thick liquid that tastes spicy and is eaten in small amounts, esp. on meat and sandwiches.

No I mean mustard. I've had many varieties. My favorite is Polish sarepska, which is spicy. This mustard was labeled as mild so I expected something more like yellow mustard. Also Finns aren't really known for spicy food so expectation did not meet reality. I liked it tho!

Then I could assume, that you would assume Finnish salmiakki, liquorice, to be also mild.
I suggest expecting the traditional Finnish kitchen to give emphasis to the tastes of the main ingredients and spices are used just to support them and not to take a major role, perhaps with some exceptions. Mustard can be a bit of an exception in some situations.
