This is creepy after being immersed in Les Mis, the musical, movie and book. IF Eponine had not jumped in front of the bullet meant for Marius, it really would be her singing this, not him. Hearing the first "Eponine" I knew singing about the situation is very moving. And my "alternate reality" nerdiness clicks in. This is just beautiful. I can't get too much of Les Mis or Lea.
GAHHH !!! I WAS THINKING THE SAME WHILE LISTENING!!! like.. dang, this really could have been eponine singing this to an empty room, marius and the others all gone
This would be so depressing! Now this makes me think of Eponine and Cosette meeting each other while mourning for Marius and perhaps they’ll start getting along and will bond over their shared grief.
Lea's pronunciation of words is so clear, so refine. You can understand every letter, every word she utters. I can consider her accent as one of th best.
I know there's no Perfect singer but in my opinion Ms. Lea Salonga is the closest you can get to Perfection. She is the best singer the Philippines has ever produced.
Only Disney? Oh these guys are clueless. Aside from Les Mis and Miss Saigon, let's not forget her roles in Grease, Cats, The King and I, The Fantasticks, Flower Drum Song, Fiddler on the Roof, Annie, Cinderella and many, many, many more.
I believed that all singers in the philippines...thier songs are holy and sacred...with a thousanths melodious rythm and amazing vibrations of frequency...that's why pilipino singers are excellent performer at all times.
There's a grief that can't be spoken There's a pain goes on and on Empty chairs at empty tables Now my friends are dead and gone Here they talked of revolution Here it was they lit the flame Here they sang about tomorrow And tomorrow never came From the table in the corner They could see a world reborn And they rose with voices ringing And I can hear them now The very words that they had sung Became their last communion On this lonely barricade at dawn Oh my friends, my friends forgive me That I live and you are gone There's a grief that can't be spoken There's a pain goes on and on Phantom faces at the windows Phantom shadows on the floor Empty chairs at empty tables Where my friends will meet no more Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me What your sacrifice was for Empty chairs at empty tables Where my friends will sing no more
@@Dace18 , I use to say the telephone list, because it may be the most boring thing ever (name, number, name, number name number, etc, for 2000 pages). I used to say that about Ella, Piaf, Streisand, Amalia Rodrigues, and now, of course, Lea.
It's interesting to me, because I feel like Lea's version has a lot more actual mourning in it than many of the male singers who do this song. Many of the singers who do it in Les Mis have really muscular deliveries. When they do the bit with "from the table in the corner, I could see a world reborn, and they rose with voices ringing..." you get the idea that they're trying to revive those voices. Just remember Ramin's "Oh my friends, my friends, don't ASK me", where he sings as though he's arguing with himself and with real other people, compared to Lea's gentler version of the same line, where she sings as if she's letting go of people that perhaps she never really belonged to in the first place. I don't think either interpretation is wrong or right, but hearing her sing this song made me think much harder about the actual place of the song in the musical, and about the delivery of other singers that I'd loved before her.
+lastofthelapras Yes, Lea's rendition is more haunting and "with more actual mourning." But i also like the version in the movie of Les Mis. Great performance.
+Ricardo Ramos I agree so much!!! I loved his acting there. I mean, Michael Crawford, Hadley Fraser, Ramin etc -- all exceptional singers. But Eddie Redmayne's expressions/breathlessness/tears/diction were all so, so spot-on and I really felt his loss. The way he sung the last "oh my friends, my friends don't ask me" still haunts me to this day!!!
This song is really quite difficult to interpret because it has to have competing emotions. When Lea sang On My Own, there were so many emotions because she was so conflicted and confused even. This song should be sung kinda in the same way.
It was the most subtly beautiful performance... most musicals singers can "belt" a song, and do the cheap trick of going for the "money" notes, it takes real class to take it down a peg or two and really "control" the voice and the emotion, for me, much more powerful, but each to their own.
Lea has long been one of my favorite singers... and this only adds to the reasons why. Keep in mind she is singing on a news show with no mixing of her voice or music like so many other performers need to sound good. Heavenly!
It has been a while since a performance of this song really moved me, but Lea sang it with such a tenderness and pained passion that I couldn't help but cry.

It was a very haunting melody indeed! I am proud of you Lea! Here in Norway, i'm kind of bizi promoting you my own way to people. Thanks for this upload! Love and prayer
A smart singer who is fun to watch on interviews, concerts, and movies. She is the first Filipino to win the Tony award for her Broadway performance of Miss Saigon.
Yeah, Lea S is so gifted with a voice that is world classic......continue to conquer globally while you still can.....habang tumatagal lalong gumaganda lalo ang boses mo.....it's really a healing voice....
I am a JAPAYUKI, also a singer & entertainer like LEA SALONGA. Former Japayukis like me performed in night clubs in Japan. As ENTERTAINERS, we all know that whenever we perform WE ALWAYS GIVE OUR BEST & TRY SO HARD TO PLEASE & ENTERTAIN PEOPLE WITH OUR SINGING, ACTING & DANCING always hoping they will like our performances. But it's okay na rin coz we earned big "lapads" in Japan that really helped our families financially back home. I hope showbiz Lea Salonga (whom many people find her hypocritical) will have SINCERE concern & support to her fellow entertainers like us Japayuki singers to ask the government to BRING BACK AGAIN EMPLOYMENTS IN JAPAN for us ENTERTAINERS (SINGERS & DANCERS) coz we can earn big "lapads" in Japan that would really help improve the lives of our families...
This is my dream girl, right here. Leah, I just want to say, thanks so much for keep bringing honor to the Philippines. I've been a fan of yours since I was young.
saw her in concert back in January :) this was the highlight of the concert for me when she sang this! Empty Chairs and Empty tables is my fave les mis song! :) well along with On mY own and I dreamed a dream
it's ironic that people from other countries appreciate her talent more than we do here in the phil. some contestants in the voice phil. do not know how lucky they are to be mentored by a TONY AWARD WINNING singer/actress.
Yeah... the contestants were silly for choosing to be trained by people who even they sing better than. Sarah Hironimo isnt even good. I dont understand their minds.
"There"s a grief that cannot be spoken....". Such a tragic and haunting song from Les MIśerables. The mournful lyrics and poignant melody are soul-stirring and heartbreakiing. Makes me cry everytime I listen to it. Moreover, Lea's interpretation is just as beautiful and moving as the song. Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boubill are absolutely two of the best musician and lyricist on earth.💖
I realize that Singing is not all about the singer but the song. It is paying full respect to the song as much as giving life and spirit to its lyrics.
One can't deliver songs the way she usually does without having supreme confidence - not arrogance -- born out of decades of high-level practice and life/stage experience since early childhood.
It's funny that this is on 'American Songbook', as it's written by two French nationals for an originally British musical, which was adapted from a French novel.
When God pour out all those Angelic golden voice.Lea Salonga catches all of it.and she can sing anything nothing she can not do.i can listen to her anytime and broadway becomes alive.

I absolutely agree with you...her enunciation of the words makes a song's clear definition vivid...
I know there's no Perfect singer but in my opinion Ms. Lea Salonga is the closest you can get to Perfection. She is the best singer the Philippines has ever produced.
Empty chairs and empty tables where my father sing no more....
and the WORLD
This lady really sings
beautiful, Eddy Redmayne sings it to perfection.
Besides having an incredibly GREAT voice, I can not think of anyone who places the emotion of the song into her performances better than Lea Salonga.
You stop that.
Your voice is too perfect for human ears.
No, don't stop!!!
Full marks to the pianist, too.. great accompaniment.

Watch her in a starring role in Redwood Curtain movie. She acted realy well in that.
Lea's diction is so good that I can understand every word that she sings in the song.it's hard to find a singer like this.
more than her singing, I always amaze by how she answered to all of her interviews, very smart and articulate.
Her voice is actually the most beautiful and perfect thing I've ever heard
okay so she carried the melody in this new key so perfectly. wow.
Kim, Eponine, Fantine, Princess Jasmine, Mulan. Damn this woman has a lot of identities! Next thing you know she's Batman!
Lol not batman but she' captain marvel hahaha
Hhahah! 😂
Marius is next!
This is one of the - if not THE BEST piano arrangement and interpretation I've heard of this song! Stunning!
Mark The pianist loves Lea's voice😍
Simply stunning, diction, expression, technique, breath control, and so moving, just so incredible. She is incredible.
I love her sense of humor plus her being smart. She's truly bless with that crystal-clear voice. I'll be forever thankful and proud to be her fan!

Beautiful performance! She nails every song she sings! On a random note, I need an instrumental in this key!
Most likely, because that voice of hers is just unquestionably, undeniably beautiful.
I would listen to her sing a restaurant menu.
I would pay to listen to her singing my doctor's prescription.

You'll never experience a dead air if it's Lea Salonnga who's being interviewed.
I like lea salonga's voice, an angelic voice
Most of the time, I have a problem with girls singing guys songs from musicals or even guys singing girls songs. But, she proved me wrong. I love this
Amazing voice and brings you goosebumps just listening to it so much to come out of

The most beautiful voice I have ever heard is still a young Lea Salonga.

Perfect song as always from Lea Salonga! Wow...great perfomance!

LEA'S TALENTED.

What a voice...so melancholy! Wow, with her magnificent interpretation, this song carries me thru the actual scene of the Les Miz play.
