    Drilled a few holes in a clutch plate and attached long bar ,,,,used to unbolt clutch basket. Worked great.

    Thanks for an excellent video - It made the dreaded task of removing the starter clutch from my '84 GPz750 A2 so much easier to do. Regarding removal of the clutch & secondary shaft nuts, in my case someone had obviously been there before on my bike - the 140lb/ft clutch nut loosened easily with a 30mm socket: on the other hand, the secondary shaft 27mm 45 lb/ft nut required a 3ft-long pipe applied to my ratchet to loosen it. By the way, this was done with the engine in the frame & using a simple clutch locking device.

    I need to do this on my 1981. It was really bad two years ago at 25K miles. Used a little starting fluid on cold mornings for instant starts. Now two years later at 55K and a rebuilt starter it starts normal. With allot of oil leaking at the jug gaskets I'm just going to swap out the engine and do it off the bike. Great Video. Interesting that the plate broke. Others have had broken little roller springs. Bought springs from Z1. You've taken the mystery/fear out of doing this job.

    Just finished this on my KZ750....GREAT video. It helped a lot, and made it less intimidating then before I started, thanks. I would HIGHLY suggest taking the motor out to do this, WAY easier. Plus, you can clean all gasket surfaces even better this way :) You have to take the exhaust off to do it even when it on the bike, so..... Now im bringing the motor over to a friends to get the bolts torqued to the right specs, then covers back on and on to the top end. :)

    I was sure my starter clutch was bad. It howled on startup. Took it bike mechanic for several issues. He replaced the battery amongst many other repairs. He said the old battery voltage was low causing the starter to drag. Both starter and clutch were fine. Battery fixed it. Who woulda thought? Since it turned over pretty good, I never would have considered battery problem.

    @berny, you can do this on the bike but it makes it much easier just to remove the motor. In the bike you're gonna have to remove the exhaust and put the bike up and down (as high in the front as you can to make it easier to get to). I have a kz750 that I need to replace the starter clutch in within the next week or 2 and I'll be trying this method for myself. Hope the video was helpful to you and best of luck!

    Those are JIS screws, not philips. A philips screw driver can very easily damage them, and at 2:58 it looks like that has already happened. Any time you are working on something manufactured in Japan, like a Kawasaki, consider the screws to be JIS and NOT philips. If you're lucky, a philips will work, but if you're unlucky, you're gonna have a bad time!

    Great video. I don't own a strap wrench but I will now. My bike will be much easier, a 76 KZ760. No need for a forty year old "special tool".

    there's a tool that looks like a pair of vice grips with forks and pins, special tool for clutch baskets, like $30 or something, really good investment, found it on wish, ebay has them too, and you then can do it with like 80psi air and it takes about 4 -11 seconds

    Great video and step by step! Not a DIY for me but a Kawi mechanic. Can you please give me total INS Motorsports labor time to replace a starter clutch..10-15 hours??. from engine removal, rebuild and engine replacement? It looks like the same procedure on my 2003 Kawasaki Voyager xii as the starter clutch and chain are in the center of the engine. Thank you for sharing!

    I bought a 1985 GPZ750A3 and the PO said he bought it from a guy 8 years ago and hadn't started it since. He said the PO he bought from told him it needed a new starter clutch. I have the engine out of the frame and cylinders off, figure I might as well take the starter clutch out to check it. So can I inspect it with eye and hand tell if the starter clutch is bad like that, or is it required that I have the starter spinning (cylinders and top end back on it)?

    Did you make sure to follow all the steps. Once you remove the oil pump and press out the shaft with a brass hammer it should give you enough slack. I havnt done too many of these so I don't know if I'm going to be too much help.... Doing another one this week on a 750 spectre. I'll let you know if I run in to a tight chain on that. Maybe after I can be of more help.

    hi i have a question. i have a 1984 kz500 and i am trying to connect a gear indicator but can't seem to find the gear wires. i was wondering if it is possible to install a gear shifter on old bikes or not. any info helps thank you.

    I just replaced the stater clutch on my 550 kawasaki how ever when doing it a check valve Ball fell out and i don know where it came from any one know where it goes

    I could be wrong but I think the clutch centre nut is a crush thread and shouldn't be used again. But again I could be wrong

    Doing this right now, and have also hit the tight chain trouble when trying to remove the shaft. Any info to help would be greatly appreciated.

      OK, so turns out you have to hold the main chain and clutch assembly still and then slide the shaft off to the right, the sprocket for the primary chain and clutch assembly are on a spline on the shaft. Once off getting the whole lot out is relatively easy.

    Im having trouble unhooking the chain from the starter clutch there's just not enough slack on the chain any suggestions would be appreciated;)

      chain was tough, i just slid the shaft out while holding the gear with the chain stationary. how did you end up doing it? (I noticed it was 8 months ago)
