  • set up of an 18 ft modern tipi with one piece liner. I paint and set up tipis for many clients. This one was for their grandkids who also painted the outside. The largest one I have done is 26 ft. The measurement is the diameter of the tipi.

    Nice video and set up. I've done many rendezvous over the years in my 9 footer and my 18 footer. I realize this one was set up for a play teepee, but there are a few changes that need to be made in the set up for living purposes. Rain water will run down the teepee poles. The water will either drip on your bedding or will soak the liner. So to fix that issue, when installing the liner walls, add two sticks (3-4 inches long each) under the upper and lower liner ties (facing inward) all the way around the circumference of the teepee. The sticks need to run perpendicular to the teepee poles with an inch gap between them. This will allow the rain water to run down the poles and not soak the liner as it runs to the bottom of the teepee and into the drainage ditch you pre-dug around the base of the teepee. If you have water dripping off the liner attachments after the installation of the sticks, adjust the sticks to allow the rain water stream to flow between the sticks.
    The bottoms of the Smoke flaps need to be secured with ropes to the Lodge Pole which is installed a few feet in font of and inline with the doorway. Mine are set at 6 feet to allow ample room for entering and exiting.
    The Loge Pole can be hammered in the ground or held in place with guy wires and stakes, either way it must be firmly in place.
    Smoke flaps will need to be adjusted to prevent rain from entering through the smoke hole.
    The framing poles tie down rope should be tied to the Lifting pole (the one the canvas is attached to) if using fire inside, as the OP stated.

      Some good points but again this is just a play house. The old tipis seldom had ropes coming off the bottom of the smoke flaps. That is a Laubin thing

    When I look at these kinds of tipis, its hard for someone like me with less experience to know if the top hole in the tipi is small enough to not let too much cold in the top, for the smoke hole, smoke flaps.
    Is there a way to guage this when you are looking at tipi canvas being sold by others to know if the hole is going to be too big or not?
    *** I'm curious what kind of temperature differences you will see from the inside liner being installed inside the tent also? This would be a big factor in usage for temperatures below 40 degrees F. And this is why what you are doing is pretty interesting. ***
    Thanks for reading my comment and for sharing your knowledge.

    Where does one find sheets of canvas this size? It hasn't got seams!
    I'm hoping to set up an 18 and 27ft tipi but baby steps and have to find a material supplier!
    Also I've noticed canvas gauge is usually around 10 - 14oz for this application
    But it even goes up to 30oz!
    Can anyone explain the pros and cons of this? :D

  • @noahriding5780
    @noahriding5780 Рік тому

    I wanted to ask if paint store drop cloth is strong enough to make tipis with? This material is a bit cheaper than normal canvas. But I'm not sure if its as durable? I hoped someone might have feedback because really good canvas costs a lot.
    Thank you.

    Hey man, wonderful. Sorry for my ignorant question: Why a liner?

    • @gavinthor4479
      @gavinthor4479 4 роки тому +4

      The liner keeps you dry when it's raining, cool when it's hot, and warm when it's chilly. It also prevents shadows from being cast on the outer canvas when the fire is going inside - a concern when you like privacy or if someone's apt to shoot at you... years ago I would have said this was only a concern back in the day... but now...who knows?

    • @absarokajoe
      @absarokajoe  3 роки тому +2

      Privately mostly although some believe it helps draft the smoke upwards

      Added warmth, no shadows of people inside with a fire.

    this has to be in Missoula? I recognize those mountains from anywhere. Mount Sentinel and Mount Jumbo. The tower in the back ground i assume is where the peace sign trail is at and the South Hills way in the back. this is up somewhere in the Rattlesnake.
