  • University of Minnesota researcher Jon Grant may have uncovered how to treat people who suffer from an addiction to shoplifting. By medicating people who suffer from kleptomania, their desire to steal was drastically reduced and in some cases, they had no desire at all.

The problem with treating kleptomaniacs is that you can't explain anything to them...they always take things literally.

I am so addicted to shoplifting. I’m only 13 and have anxiety, and I’ve already stolen $300 worth of products. I’m planning on having a shoplifting trip tomorrow. Even though I get anxiety attacks every time I do it, I can’t stop.

Honestly I’m not sure if I used to be a kleptomaniac. When I was about 13, my friends introduced me to shoplifting candy and such. I instantly got hooked. It wasn’t because I wanted free candy, it was because of the adrenaline, it was so much fun. Most days after school, me and my friends immediately went to different supermarkets and stole. We never stole anything considered big, mostly candy bars and sodas or random small objects which had no meaning except for the rush from shoplifting. What kept me going, except from the adrenaline rush, was how good I was (at least from my perspective). I never got caught, except once which I will continue to explain. As time flew by, I started to steal more and more, not bigger items, just more frequently. I had started to almost nag at my best friend to go shoplifting. Everyday after school I wanted to do it. There’s two reasons to why I doubt I had kleptomania. 1. I feel like the adrenaline rush was what kept me going, I didn’t feel a particular urge to steal, maybe very slightly, but mostly it was just the addiction to the adrenaline. You see, shoplifting wasn’t the only forbidden thing we did, it was primarily shoplifting, but we also for an example tried smoking. We liked the feeling of doing something mischievous and forbidden, cause it gave us adrenaline. 2. As I said, I never got caught, except for one time, which was my last time. I had been doing this for almost 6 months and the staff at the supermarket caught us stealing a dollar worth candy bar, and called the police. I of course thought it was ridiculous, and to an extent I kind of still do. However, it was my last time. So it worked, but that was mostly because of my parents reaction which made me quit. Anyways, my point. I doubt I was a kleptomaniac because after that incident, I didn’t really want to do it again. My rationality had more control than my urge to steal (which was close to zero). I doubt anyone read this entire comment, but if you did, do you think it was just a phase or slight kleptomania?

When i was 10/12. I also used to steal like some girls stuff ( along with some friends), noth big just rings and hair clips but i was caught once and got a slap over my face for it.....and afterwards i also stopped. I guess, it was just a phase and maybe if we continued doing that, that would have developped to kleptomania. I never told anyone this coz i feel ashamed, i was stealing ...not for a long period of time and i know i did it i guess coz i used to hang out with girls who did it..so.i did it anyway. Never did it again and im 30 now.

Definitely been there and I would say it is a phase or like a trigger for character development. Mainly because you've come to terms of the moral implications of stealing and the consequences it has to led to with that high. Kinda glad I got caught before I could steal bigger things otherwise the consequences would be much worse. And just like you I saw the path I was going to lead towards to if I continued this high.

this is theft addiction as stated by nebulag34, im doing a systematic review of journals on kleptomania and people who are affected do not get a rush of excitement or do they feel rewarded after the theft. They experience high levels of anxiety before the theft and almost always have a feeling of shame after this has been done, which sends them into states of depression. Furthermore, the majority of the items that are stolen are disregarded and never used.

Thanks, my hypothesis is it is part of CPTSD childhood trauma of neglect, abandonment and/or abuse, where the activity is an attempt to fill a hole in the soul. Might that be conducive to your research? It may be mixed with ordinary shoplifting for various reasons, including addiction, poverty, lack of life, lack of joy, lack of stimulation, revenge, boredom, habit, power. Maybe. Too exhausted sick to think clearly. Want holistic therapy , not medications

Stealing to express anger at corporations, to save money or because you actually want and use the things you are stealing is not Kleptomania, it is real u are not an expert on the topic just because you steal that is silly. I am very anti-corporate so I can understand your point of view if you are only stealing from huge chain stores, however that can cause the price of items to go up leaving regular people like u and I to foot the bill. Buying from independently owned stores does more good.

Stealing is wrong. When something goes missing, innocent people can appear suspect or worse still, wrongly accused.

With no intention to bring a chicken-egg debate here. I totally agree with the (assumed) chemical unbalance that produces mental disorders such as depression. My question is, what brings about such unbalances? If I'm perfectly healthy and I "suddenly" get depressed, why does this happen? If environmental events can change the brain chemistry, why use drugs?

I don’t steal from shops, but I steal literally the most random things from my friends. Like this one girl had a really cute journal she never used and I stole it. Then she also had a weird trophy thing. I took it. :(

the means in which the medication works is questionable. it suppresses the ability to produce dopamine. this is good because there is no longer a reward feeling from doing these things, but bad because that means that there is very little reward feeling for anything at all. this can result in depressive symptoms

Watertight compartments between the different selves, probably. The super-ego and the id. The I with shame , guilt and conscience versus the sick, stressed, confused, emotional, craving, feeling part of the soul. Are you a health-care worker? How did you make the emotional setting of those non-admitting talks? What would be consequences if they admitted, may they be afraid of punishment, of encounter with their unbearable shame, or of losing you? Of losing a needed good self-image, which doesn't seem to be that stable? What do you have to give them for that owning, some healing?
