1993 Porsche 968 Clubsport Review - Porsche's Final Transaxle Was A Gem

  • Today I am lucky to be driving a beatiful white Porsche 968 Clubsport. Introduced as a successor to the 944, the 968 didn't sell very well. So, in a few markets Porsche came up with a new idea - strip out the luxuries, chuck on some fancy graphics and sell it as a more hardcore sports car. It worked, and the 968 Clubsport became a legend.

Have been daily driving my 968 coupe for the last 12 years.... 214,000 and counting.....the coupe is the better option for UK roads, although I’ve updated the suspension with Koni’s adjustable, and refreshing the bushes and springs, everything else as delivered, full leather, climate control, yada yada....

Drove a 968 as a daily driver for 10 years and 165.000 miles. Great car, very practical. Not super quick, but quick enough for a daily driver. Changed it for a 933, but thinking of buying one again (not selling the 993, that is a great car as well). Had a 944 and 944s2 before as well. But the 968 is much better in performance and looks.

I have developed quite the liking of this car, thank you for this video!
To me it is the best looking of the front engined Porsches, and unlike the (late) 928 still affordable in Germany.

@JayEmm at 6:12 marker in this video you can see that this car's Airbox has been modified. Unfortunately incorrectly and I think will have a negative effect on HP. Normally, there is a cold air intake that run out of that square-ish port for a snorkel and down out of the engine compartment to get cold air from below the car. This one as the missing that snorkel. Instead it implements a popular mod which cuts four additional ports, the rounded holes in the front of the air box to try to increase air supply. That's fine, however in order for that to work correctly a shroud needs to be installed to isolate the heat from the engine compartment from entering the airbox. That separation missing here and effectively what is happening is your cold air intake is now a hot air intake. That's unfortunate.

Excellent Jay, just recently sold my 1995 968 Sport after 15yrs (& trouble free) ownership. The MO30 suspension is not good for public roads, standard suspension much better. Also the Sport they only produced for the last year for the UK market was the best selling version for that year.
The Sport really is the best version to get for road use, with the extra comfort levels, but still retains the Club Sport driving dynamics with same suspension.
The big bonus is that it's quite a bit cheaper to buy than a similar condition Club Sport, which has become the most desirable & expensive (unjustifiably really) version, from (as you rightly said) the least expensive when new.

    • @thedrivebygg
      @thedrivebygg 2 роки тому +2

15 years ownership and trouble free that’s amazing, hopefully own a coupe or 944 S2 at some point. Why did you sell the car if you don’t mind me asking. I published a video on a slate gray 968 you might like, feel free to check it out. I also think a base 718 boxster for sub £35k is a bargain.

I remember seeing one for the first time alongside a 964 Turbo S Flatnose, 930 Turbo 3.3, and many other classics during a gathering of classic Porsches last year. I am a happy boy, considering my favourite Porsche when I was a small boy was the transaxle Porsches, especially 968CS and 928GTS.

James, i always nod in approval when you talk about the 50/50 weight distribution being nonsense :-D Memories of Alonso winning the championship with Renault with the most rear-biased F1 car (it used to kill rear tyres). Great car in white. Looks like you had a lotta fun driving it.

After owning my old 944, I realized porsche makes the best cars in the world. Mine was high mileage, but still purred, and could still outrun entry level 'sporty' cars. No rust. Electrical problems, of course, but I didn't care. It ran well. The ride was comfortable, yet, well balanced for spirited driving. Another reason I think Porsche is on another level. They aren't for drivers looking to upgrade and tune. And yes, parts aren't cheap. Trust me, you won't be disappointed in this car if you like momentum cars.

Porsche has a classics programme and the 944 is in, so i assume you can buy original OEM parts or have the 968 refurbished by a regional Porsche dealer. If you really don't want to work on it yourself.

I drive a coupe with no sunroof and limited slip diff (both desirable options) and of course, 6 speed and cup 1 wheels and tyres sizes. The CS is so much more expensive and tbh if you want to drive daily, the standard is practically as fast, comfier and great for long journeys. Still rare but compared to the CS, a bargain. Btw running costs are in my experience very affordable. £500 a year service. Very economical too.

Going back to your comment about 50/50 weight distribution not necessarily being ideal. In my experience, which is limited, it does seem to be ideal in four wheel drive vehicles, but not so much in front or rear wheel drives. In front wheel drives a slight bias to the front and rear wheel drives a slight bias to the rear seems beneficial, although the amount of bias also seems to depend on the weight of the vehicle with lighter cars benefitting from a greater bias. As I said, my experience is limited, so these rules may not always apply.

968CS is an fantastic car. I recently supercharged mine to give it the power and torque Porsche should have in the first place (Turbo S and RS too rare and expensive). Having owned nearly every single permutation of 924, 944 and 968 the 968 CS really is the culmination of the Porsche transaxles and a proper drivers car. Now they are more collectable and special the CS is the one to go for whilst if it was a daily car you were looking for a Sport of Coupe were better suited.

Nice to see one of these featured.
My dream car when I was younger was a 944 turbo and I ended up buying one of the last made when I was 25. It was metallic black, cream interior, manual box (of course) and I loved it. It was a lot cheaper than a 911 of the time and also a lot more practical as my only car and when I was away from home a lot, driving around the country.
In terms of practicality I got 2 mountain bikes and enough luggage for week away for 2, including evening wear for a friends wedding, in the car once. Wouldn't get that in a 911!
I ended up selling it when I got into motorbikes and I found myself doing nearly all motorway miles. When it was in for a service I got an offer for it out of the blue and it was sold within days. Great car back in the day though, especially when you're 25 :-)

So it did not have to be that expensive to get a car with one. To be fair though, I am sure lots of people couldnt believe the Vectra had a 6-speed back then, when they got into one. Some people who mostly had run a bit older economy cars were hardly used to a 5 speed!

Saved a big premium over a CS and unless you are tracking, it’s as sharp and enjoyable as you will get for the money. The new one was oh so good and was the first 6 speed I drove. Would love one today, but the cost is eyewatering for a decent one. They did also make a turbo model of these, but in extremely small numbers (14 cars I think). With over 300bhp, they were very rapid. I seem to remember it was the fastest 4 cylinder car at the time (turbo model), replacing the 924 Carrera which previously held it.

The first Porsche I drove in my Younger Years was a 911 Turbo aka the Widowmaker.
I found the car drove like crap, that's why I can't get any excitement for 911 up until today!
The Transaxles are a much different Story, they drive great! I prefer any Transaxle Porsche over the 911 of the era! What a great car! 👍🏼

I recall seeing them up for sale at camerons of Perth for 28k when the standard one was 8 grand more. I think it was a non cohesive face lift, 928 front and rear but sides are angular from a 944. I think the 928 GTS still looked more current than the 968 but was fortune. The Carrera 4 was just out that was cutting edge tech 4 wheel traction control. 928 looked the the future in the 80s

@JayEmm don't know what's up with this car but normally these don't push around corners. Next time you find yourself in the US, you are welcome to retest with mine. Retest with the upcoming 944 S2 and you will find it shouldn't push either.

The waste gate was impaired on purpose so that it would be slower than the 911. If you fix the waste gate issue on the turbo, it's faster than a 911 turbo from the period and runs 300hp.

It gave owners (who couldn't afford a 911) a pub banter winning reason for owning one.

The 924 was invisible to me (you had to be around when it came out) so each successive iteration thereof was just as invisible. It just stayed around far too long. As far as your comment on 50/50 weight distribution, I eagerly await that video. I can tell you with no doubt that 50/50 in an Alfa GTV-6 on snow tires in the snow is a blast. Totally different from non 50/50 cars.

Quite like the shape of these but I think I prefer the 944 got to give it to them for actually lowering in the cost when they removed half the car, they now charge for doing that but does removing the headlining actually make it that much lighter🤣?
