One of the things that I always liked about this as a villain song was that at the beginning of the song, Onceler genuinely doesn't see what he's doing as being a bad thing and the question of "How bad can I be?" Is more of a, "it's no big deal" dismissal, but by the end of the song, it's more of a challenge to himself to see what he can get away with.

I can hear him singing to this song alongside with the likes of Dreadpool, Yuujirou (Yujiro) Hanma, Tetsuo Shima, Evil!Ren Hoek, Griffith, Thragg, Homelander and several others.
All while he was ignorant and arrogant of doing so. That’s what makes them the antagonists. This song predicted most if not all of the MrBeast drama, good cover while doing horrible things without people realizing it, and the Lorax is the people who knew everything and couldn’t say anything because he is too loved to people to believe them, and everyone realized when things started going horribly downhill for him, people realized how horrible he is because things got very serious, all because of one factor the started a chain of events that made him go downhill.

There's no way they wouldn't start a lawsuit immediately if this was true. It’s sad cuz he could’ve saved his business and the animals if he would’ve replanted the trees he chopped down. Classic Supply and Demand. As the demand increased his supply did not
or if he had just stuck to harvesting the stuff from the trees. in the original, it is revealed it takes 10 months for a truffula seed to germinate, and even more years for one to turn into a tree
too much cost and labor to replant, cultivate, and tend to growing trees. it’s all about making the most profit possible as fast as you can. what he should’ve done is invest the majority of his wealth into real estate and guaranteed cash flow for the rest of his life.
@@Demonutzz yessir, I know it’s evil, but you should try putting water in prime bottles looks brand new, who’s gonna fall for it??? 2nd-3rd graders, maybe. Business idea 😈😈📈📈📈
I like how when he takes a moment to monologue mid-song, he comes up with two different excuses to enable his destructive business. The first being that he leads a small company and only does what he needs to survive; The second being that he leads a large corporation and he’s just doing what he needs to further the economy.
I never thought about that, small company vs large corporation... and sometimes they do the same horrible things, only with different excuses. I could make an essay on all the things this song goes through.
I'm not always a fan of adding elements to movies that are adaptations of books, but I think in the case of the Onceler's family, it really worked. He viewed truffula trees as something to use, profit from, and stop caring about when they stopped benefiting him because, well, that's what his family taught him to do by treating him the exact same way.
It kinda ruins the idea of the book, that even good people can easily be blinded and corrupted by greed. In the movie it is portrayed as if Onceler became evil just because of the influence of his family. The family itself isn't anything more than a few stereotypical characters that play minor role in the story and they aren't even that entertaining
I can’t get over the transition from “I can’t be THAT bad” to “let’s see how bad I can be” like it flowed so well and I’m honestly shocked by how well it worked.
This song is literally catchier than the songs on the radio. This is such an amazing song and I love how “How Bad Can I Be” goes from an excuse to such a sinister and evil phrase. This song really shows how bad we as humans can be and seeing that last tree get cut down really is a sad scene. More people really need to appreciate this song not only for it’s catchiness but also for it’s message.
@@josephstalin4478 Well...selfish. And short-sighted. And he ultimately devastated the environment to the point people were buying fresh air. Whether he meant to or not, he still caused a lot of bad stuff.
The onceler: How bad can i be? me: 1. You destroyed the whole forest for prof- * a h e m * respect from your family. 2. Made *HUNDREDS* of animals homeless, maybe even killing a few in the process from the big machine chopping the trees down. 3. Polluted the air and the water.
I mean, the whole Lorax book/movie is effectively environmentalist commentary. The Once-ler is meant to be an embodiment of big business and the corruption and destruction involved in it.
It’s a play on how corporations or even celebrities portray themselves as kind and good by filming themselves doing these kinds of things. And that’s the thing, they intentionally film themselves doing these stuff to get points from the public, all the while they spend more time out for themselves rather than help people when they are off-camera
Not gonna lie, I like everything about this song, The double-meanings, the transition from good to villian-ish as the song goes on, the usual song-qualities, and how this song fits the businesses harming the enviorment for money.
@@tommymaroon4189 It's pretty good, more Rock Opera style and calls out coporate greed more directly. If you want to check it out it's called "Biggering". Illumination most likely cut it because it would've portrayed them in a worse light as well for softening the message of The Lorax
The part with the uncle taking the money for charity just cracks me up. It’s just so random and I love how he winks like he just did the coolest thing ever even though he probably just took a couple cents and it wasn’t super obvious it was him. Also according to the credits his name is Uncle Ubb which was a character from Dr. Seuss’s ABCs.
I love the gradual changing of meaning in the phrase “ how ban can I be?” And it becoming messed up as The Onceler does worse and worse things. It goes from “ Am I actually bad?” To “ I kinda know I’m bad” to “ just how much worse should I make things?”
Oh wow you’re right. “How bad can I be?” as in the phrase, in a more figurative way, rhetorically asking, trying to say that he’s not bad. Then it goes to a more hyperbolic tone. That is, “How bad can I be?” As if to say he’s bad but trying to justify it. Finally, it turns into a more literal question. As if he literally wants to find out how bad he can be.
Evolution of the meaning behind each "How bad can I be" 0:34 - 0:51 "How bad can I be?" -->basically how can i be bad, rhetorical to self, truly believes himself to be good . 0:52 "How bad can I possibly be?" --> decides to push the boundaries of what "good" is. 1:19 - 1:38 "How bad can I be?" --> "good" and "bad" start to blur, believes he is just doing "what comes naturally"/"(he) is just following his destiny", redirects blame to (human)nature. The lorax protects nature, so he's using this argument against the lorax saying that what he is doing is natural/meant to be, still somewhat cares about persuading the lorax, although this sentiment quickly fades. 2:13 -2:22 "Come on how bad can I possibly be?" --> Now he claims that all he's doing is following the "principles of business," tries to strengthen his argument supporting his destructive business even more, nature/the lorax's will is irrelevant to him now. He also starts to develop a bit of a superiority complex and is shown to have become very greedy. 2:23 - 2:31 "How bad can I be?" --> rhetorical to the public who don't perceive him as bad and he knows it. 2:32 "How bad could I possibly be, let's s ee," --> has begun to question how much he could potentially get away with, acknowledges that he is "bad" 2:37 - 2:46 "How bad can he be?" --> public echoing his question to them, don't see him as 'bad'. However he sees how his "money is multiplying" and is excited to earn more, decides to protect himself from the repercussions of his actions so he can go further and earn more money. 2:48 - 3:05 "How bad can he be?" --> He is protected from the repercussions of his actions, he knows there are no consequences whatsoever, feels very powerful, fully embraces being "bad". 3:08 "How bad, how bad can this possibly be?" -->basically how bad can I get, a challenge to self, and the song ends right there. After the song ends, we see that the last tree is chopped down, implying that he never got to see "how bad it could possibly be" as his business was shut down immediately as a result. All his power was stripped away not long after he acquired it.

The last portion of this song is actually chilling. The last line "How bad can this possibly be?" Feels like the onceler is saying "how can this be bad when it feels so good?"
I think at the start he’s genuinely asking himself “how can this be bad, if it’s helping me and others” but at the end he’s asking himself, how far can I push this to get richer
A lot of people don’t notice the chant that starts at 2:35. In the background you hear “buy, sell, trade, squash-pork, fat, cut, smash-gold, yen, mark, pound-shot, coal, oil, war” and then it repeats and ends with “WARRRRRRRRRRRRR”
It’s been said before but I couldn’t help but notice the tone of the song goes from “how bad can I be” as in “what am I doing that’s wrong” to the part at 2:33, where it’s now “let’s see how bad I can be”. Underrated writing, I think this film was ahead of its time In a lot of ways.

Forests are renewable (sun and wind aren't renewable, ironically). You just have to know how to maintain them. A lot of forests aren't even being maintained, the forests are too thick, and it's a fire waiting to happen. Private forests are maintained and don't catch fire. Public forests aren't being maintained and constantly catch fire. On the other hand the deer population is booming so in some places most trees get eaten before they have a chance to reach maturity. The key is simply maintaining balance.
@@OneWorldGovernment2030-yv3zc wildfires in *moderate* amounts arent actually a bad thing, theyre needed for the cycle of many ecosystems to come full circle and to clear out forests that like you mentioned would get too dense otherwise, but yea alot of them are bad too. We clear out dangerous predators that would normally eat them then instead just eat our own farmed animals letting the wild prey populations get out of control.

I love the gradual changing of meaning in the phrase “ how ban can I be?” And it becoming messed up as The Onceler does worse and worse things. It goes from “ Am I actually bad?” To “ I kinda know I’m bad” to “ just how much worse should I make things?”
From how can I be bad to how bad can I be
Oh wow you’re right.
He is a baddie. Alejandro can confirm
Evolution of the meaning behind each "How bad can I be"
0:34 - 0:51 "How bad can I be?" -->basically how can i be bad, rhetorical to self, truly believes himself to be good .
2:32 "How bad could I possibly be, let's s ee," --> has begun to question how much he could potentially get away with, acknowledges that he is "bad"
2:37 - 2:46 "How bad can he be?" --> public echoing his question to them, don't see him as 'bad'.

How bad can I possibly be let’s see
You gotta remember that the original book came out in 1971. “Ahead of its time” is an understatement
The Onceler will always be one of the greatest Dr. Seuss villains ever
Eh,I still think him being faceless in the original cartoon works better in terms of message, but I still like this movie regardless of what people say!
he an anti hero
@@grass324 More like an anti-villain, or villain protagonist. He's most definitely not a hero.
@@f0xyLuvIdk?? He appears in the most of the movie, but the whole point of the story happening is because of Ted, its hard to recognize if he is primary or secondary
He’s not supposed to be a villain
The scene gives me chills bc it’s literally a real world problem personified into one person and one song and the way his tone changes in the end really makes him Dr. Seuss most powerful villain
If this gave you chills I bet the cut song biggering would also give you chills.
How does the end make him dr seuss
Forests are renewable (sun and wind aren't renewable, ironically). You just have to know how to maintain them. A lot of forests aren't even being maintained, the forests are too thick, and it's a fire waiting to happen. Private forests are maintained and don't catch fire. Public forests aren't being maintained and constantly catch fire. On the other hand the deer population is booming so in some places most trees get eaten before they have a chance to reach maturity. The key is simply maintaining balance.
repent to God
@@OneWorldGovernment2030-yv3zc wildfires in *moderate* amounts arent actually a bad thing, theyre needed for the cycle of many ecosystems to come full circle and to clear out forests that like you mentioned would get too dense otherwise, but yea alot of them are bad too. The deer thing is a separate problem stemming from humans living everywhere though. We clear out dangerous predators that would normally eat them then instead just eat our own farmed animals letting the wild prey populations get out of control. Agreed for the most part though, again like you said balance is key
This movie holds a special place in my heart, it actually introduced a much younger me to the ideas of corruption and environmental destruction. I ended up having a lot of conversations with my parents that opened my eyes quite a bit
Открыли глаза на то, что нет такого преступления на каторое не пойдёт капитал ради 300% прибыли?
I like how this movie was made by Illumination of all studios, this movie and the Mario movie shows they can be talented when they actually try.
Isn’t that the whole point of the concept of the Lorax

As a little kid watching this, it scared me, but I thought it was a super exaggerated portrayal of business. I thought no one would ever let this happen in the real world. Watching this again as an adult, I am so sad. Little me was so naive. The sound of that last tree falling broke my heart.

The plot of this clip perfectly explains the phrase “Pride comes before a fall”
Pride, not prides
twice the pride - double the fall.
Greed? What about greed?
@@Mr_Schizo It's the root of all evil, people will do anything for money.
